What if a smaller Colonial ship survived the Fall of the Colonies? Follow the Centaur Class Chiron

Chapter 17

Cadmus Sector "Dark Space"
Maxon's Respite "Fleet Governor's Office"

Jessi Maxon was not sure she wanted this new cursed job. The election to pick who would be fleet governor for the civilian ships was still 2 weeks away but saving time Jasper had told the civilian Captains to pick someone for the interim job. In a vote of 18 to 1 and to no one's surprise Jessi Maxon had been picked. She did feel honored that the RM ship Captain had picked her and that old issue seemed to no longer matter.
Jessi Maxon was also curious why the now Captain Lewis had requested a meeting with her and her senior management. Captain Lewis entered with a Petty Officer who looked slightly familiar. Carl and Tom both seemed to be surprised about something.
"How can we help you Captain Lewis. Also congratulations. I hope you are treating the Epsiki well" asked Jessi Maxon.
"Governor Maxon I wanted to request some items that you have in storage and or that you should be able to manufacture with your current capabilities" said Captain Lewis as he passed out folders to the Maxon Mining officials. "You should also have the raw materials we need if you look at page 3." Lewis gave the MM people some time to look over the briefing.
"Captain Lewis I am not sure we can spare that much or have the capabilities to make the items you are requesting" said Jessi. Tom was definitely trying to mentally tell her something but she did not know what exactly.
"Governor if I may introduce you to someone you might already know" said Captain Lewis. "PO Weathers here has been reactivated back to the Colonial Navy. However before that he worked on board the Spatiu Vega in your machining shop. I believe he was your 2nd shift manager."
ooooooooooooooo

1 hour later

"Well that could have gone better. So I am guessing that what Captain Lewis said is true and that there is no way to get out of it" asked Jessi Maxon.
"Weather's is former Aquarian SDF. He has been on our ships for almost 10 years and one of our better people in the machine shop. Knows all the ins and outs of what we can do" said Tom.
"Frak" said Jessi Maxon. "Any other ideas." She was getting tired of the Blue Boys interfering with her.
"Mom Gods Damn IT. Pay attention here" yelled Carl. "If we don't help out we could easily die. Do you want Roger, Maggie, and myself to die along with everyone else because you were what hoping to sell some copper to someone who is dead?"
Tom decided that while usually avoiding a family squabble is smarter this time he needed to step in. "He's right Jessi. We have 100K tons of worthless metal if we don't do anything with it. We could die if we don't admit things are different. Work with Jasper on this and maybe our provisional government might not under her thumb as much. Also Maxon Mining is gone. You are the current head of government. Work with the Navy."
"You are probably right. Fine let's figure out the how many people want jobs on the Epsiki and how to switch people around. Also what is the newest news on water filtration" said Jessi Maxon.

One Week Later
Chiron Officer Briefing Room

Looks like everyone is getting their feet underneath them. There certainly had been some respectful back and forth (or at least respectful enough she didn't have to officially step in) between Captain Lewis, Captain Anders, Major LImaki, and Colonel Marton regarding who got which PO and what officers will go where. The worst job was Limaki as the XO/CAG who had to figure out how to keep his pilot rotation going while having to send several of his pilots to other duties. Now that everyone was in position she had assigned her COs of her flotilla a list of what possible changes or suggestions they had for their commands. "Everyone I wanted to thank you for your work. Getting everyone slotted to their new ships and duties was complicated but we got it taken care of" said Jasper. "Now that you have had some time to look over your ships I would like to hear your thoughts and recommendations. Captain Lewis if you would please start" she 'asked.'
"Yes sir. Viper ammunition we are only at 30% of storage capacity and even with the low Viper numbers we should prioritize that first. The CIWS ammunition we are at 87% capacity but we can burn through that fast. Hopefully ammo production will start in a week for the Viper ammunition and two weeks for the CIWS ammo. Replacing shells will take longer" said Lewis.
"See if we can expedite shells" said Jasper. With missiles irreplaceable the heavy guns are the only chance they have if they have to go against the Cylons.
"Yes sir. Other than that no other items to report" said Lewis.
"Thank you. Captain Anders what is the status of your ship" asked Jasper.
"Sir, the ship performed passably on it's previous mission but there were two issues that I believe we can fix without too much issues" said Captain Anders.
Jasper was interested. Of her 4 senior officers Anders is probably the best suited command. Let's see what she suggests. "Go ahead Captain".
"Sir the first issue is that the Dradis system is lacking. With using some of the Chiron's spares I think we can boost it's power by 20%" said Anders. Second is that Raptor refueling is just too slow. I talked to Technician Ronge and he made these suggestions."
Jasper looked over the suggestions made. The Dradis parts were a possibility. The Raptor refueling though. Parts are no issue but this would make a fleet safety officer have a heart attack. "Let me check but the Dradis parts we should be able to spare. The Raptor refueling while it has merit I would like the fuel leakage risk to be lowered." Still a good job. Anders is a whiz at Dradis but not at small craft and asking for a specialist to help is good rather than falling enter the junior officer trap of thinking they need to know everything.
"Major Lamiki. As CAG what is your report" she asked. She felt bad for the poor Major. He was doing a good job at two difficult and at times contradictory jobs.
"Sir we should have Raptor 9 fixed in a few days. The long range jump might be tricky but short range will be fine. Warlock is doing fine as DCAG and the 2 trainees will get some Raptor time in a few weeks" said Lamiki. "I would like to request Viper ammunition stocks get filled so the pilots can get some live fire practice. Also the deck crew even with all their changes seem to be working together well."
"Thank you Major" making a note about Raptor 9. "Colonel Marton what is your status report" asked Jasper.
"Sir the Aglaea is as ready as she can be. Our current CIWS ammunition level is 40% but other than that we are fine. Also ready to turn our ship into the "academy". For changes until we can make more AAA guns I don't think we can do much. We are working on training to "play turtle" with you but that will take some time" said Marton. He never wanted his own command but he was going to do the best he could.
"Thank you Colonel" said Jasper. "Major now for the Chiron what is your report."
"Sir other than the previously mentioned ammunition and coordination training we do not have much" said Lamiki.
"Thank you. Well everyone our relaxing vacation is now over. If the Raptors do not pick up anything from their probes we are going to move on towards the Prolmar Sector. Thank you and dismissed" said Jasper.

Author Notes

On former military I would put the number at about 1% of the civilian popultion here. The numbers of current and former military in the Colonies before the Fall at around .1% (I can share my mental math if you care) but then assume that people who join the Navy like space so are more likely to be well "not dead."
Jessi Maxon was thinking as a CEO not as the civilian leader. Like her son and employee said sitting on a bunch of metal is stupid and weird power plays can get people killed. Also Roger is her grandson (Carl's son) and Maggie is her daughter. There is an election in what is "now" a week. There will be at least a blurb regarding that in a chapter or two.
For ammo. I have never been military and this is a massive asspull so sorry if wrong here. The Vipers use 20mm (or something close enough) and the CIWS or AAA guns use 47mm. The CIWS are those weapons that put up the wall of flak that Apollo always has to tell everyone to avoid. The Chiron has 60 CIWS as opposed to 400 or so that the Galactica has. The Chiron is a lot smaller so would run out of ammo faster in an extended battle. Do I think that this fleet could make ammunition? Not really but the Galactica somehow did it so "sure".
For those cool two barreled cannons I will put it this way. The Galactica has "12 inch guns". The Chiron has "8 inch guns". The Chiron has some missiles left but there is no way they can be replaced with what the fleet has so Jasper is definitely wanting to get shell production started ASAP.
Oh and fleet means all ships. Flotilla when used will mean the military ships.
The Aglaea will train the reservists that are rusty (but usable) and the volunteers that joined the Navy when asked. They are jokingly calling it "the academy."
I will explain who moved where and is doing what in a chapter or so (after I graph it all out).
Thank you for reading and any questions or comments are appreciated.
