FBI Agent Steve Rogers is good at what he does, uncovering scams and national security issues, but when he comes up against the mysterious Hydra he finds he's hit a dead end. As Bucky is roaming around DC, homeless, he meets a kid named Maggie. She's only 12 years old, barely five foot, and doesn't weigh 100 lbs soaking wet. The two of them are a couple of lost souls just trying to get by, but they find something in each other that they haven't felt in a long time.

Ever since childhood, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes were inseparable. No matter the conflict - whether it was the whispers in Brooklyn about their "platonic" bond, Bucky being sent to war (the only place where Steve couldn't follow), or fighting together against HYDRA - they promised to be there for each other until the end of the line. Tragically, it came sooner than expected.

The last year has been hard on all the Avengers, but Steve in particular. His search for Bucky keeps coming up empty handed and all trails have gone cold. The rest of his team persuades him to let loose and relax some for New Year's Eve. He never realized it would be exactly what he needed, in more ways than one, or that a certain friend had been watching out for him all along.

Inspired from another story (see A/N). What if the Winter Soldier had completed his mission and killed Captain America on the helicarrier? Set after CA:WS when Bucky makes it "home". Not connected to my other fics. (Spoilers:happy ending.)

Bucky comes home for Christmas.

CA:TWS movieverse. Steve has been adjusting to life after The Avengers while still continuing his work with SHIELD, but he can't manage to get over how much he's lost, especially the people he loved. However when he befriends a young woman in his building, he soon realizes he's not the only one searching for those in his past when he discovers her last name: Barnes. OC character.

Steve's New Year's Eve.

There is no life without Bucky, or, Steve and Bucky from the beginning onward and every place in between. Stucky.

The Soldier keeps them safe, always on the move. The Asset is a mess of anger and misdirection. Then there's poor, lost Bucky, trying to put his memories back together. Three men living in the same body. There's only so long that can last, especially when he's being hunted. Stucky.

After the events in D.C., Bucky and Steve spend the New Year's Eve apart and yet together - sort of.
