A girl goes to Middle-earth with the expectation that she'll take part in the Council of Elrond and join the Fellowship. She wants to kick ass and save lives while looking good - and making Legolas and Aragorn fall in love with her. Lord Elrond has other ideas: the Fate of Middle-earth is at stake, and she will play no part in it. Problem: the portal was a one-way only.
