Remus had never seen his best friends so exhausted. Even Sirius with all his boasting was too tired to pretend he wasn't affected by their exams. They'd had Arithmancy last, in his defense. Sirius had started Arithmancy late so he'd had to cram hard. Poor Peter was a zombie and they'd had to drag James out of his bed and halfway to the great hall just to his Ancient Runes OWL on time.
Remus was far more accustomed to running on an empty petrol tank, so he was fine, but watching his friends lumber around the school like life had no meaning, and falling asleep on their textbooks was hard.
That was where this terrible idea had come from.
Remus Lupin: secret werewolf, Gryffindor prefect, and The-Responsible-One was still a Marauder dang it! The war, werewolves, OWLs, and all the death they'd seen weren't going to change that fact.
Besides, his friends needed cheering up.
Sirius was focused on his grades for the first time in his life and worried about going home. His marks had skyrocketed but and they'd made decent progress on fighting off the Imperious curse, he wasn't convinced either would be enough. Peter was clearly hiding something and seemed to be sneaking away more often than usual. And James was pouting because Evans was no longer willing to even argue with him losing what little attention he got from his romantic interest.
So here was Remus, in the great hall in the middle of the night, while he was supposed to be doing his rounds exhausted because the full moon had only been three nights ago, and doing the most complicated magic he'd ever attempted full stop.
He'd recruited Peeves of all people to watch the doors because the Marauders were the only ones who could ask him to do anything and even then it was only if there was mischief to be made. Remus promised lots of mischief so Peeves had been happy to help.
This wasn't why McGonagall had given him a badge, but hey that was her bad. He was still convinced she'd been drunk.
"We still good Peeves," Remus asked noticing the poltergeist inching towards Andrea's memorial that still burned on the left wall. It had gained a few extra names since Christmas. Kids that hadn't come back for other reasons than the train incident, names they hadn't found out until later.
Peeves was determined to deface it but it had withstood all his attempts so far. Since he'd started working just after curfew he'd had to shoo Peeves away from it six times and Remus was sure he'd find something that worked by the end of the summer holiday.
He'd have to warn James and Sirius. They could probably do something to protect it. But until then he returned to his magic.
"All good your looniness," Peeves mocked and Remus shook his head. They'd created a monster.
"Stay away from that mural."
Peeves went back to the doors looking sheepish. Remus yawned and tried the spell again.
He almost puked as the world spun around him.
"Brilliant!" he cried louder than anyone out at this time of night should before covering his mouth both from nausea and the noise.
Now he had to get back out of the great hall.
He hadn't thought about that.
Fighting his disorientation and with arms outstretched he slowly made his way out the door slamming it behind him and breathing very deliberately.
"Make sure no one comes in here till breakfast." He told Peeves. "It won't be any fun if one of the teachers finds it first."
Peeves gave him an American salute rather than a proper one, just to be contrary and Remus yawned his way back to the dorm, his rounds completely ignored.
It was the last day of term, what were they going to do? Suspend him? He'd gone this long without getting his badge taken away-somehow-so he'd probably be fine.
The Morning of the last day of term was always the same. James and Sirius running around packing last minute, trying to figure out which clothes belonged to which Marauder, Peter trying to fit all his snacks in his trunk-eventually just packing his favorites and dividing the rest between everyone else-and Remus helping out where he could-having done the smart thing and packing beforehand.
This time he was slightly more insistent that they go to breakfast early.
Sirius was suspicious, of course, but that only made him curious enough to drop his packing and come along anyway. Once Sirius was roped into coming along early James and Peter followed suit easily.
"You look way too proud of yourself," Sirius smirked it looked like the biggest smile he had the energy for. "What did you do and why wasn't I in on it?"
"You were asleep and some idiot gave me permission to be out of the dorms at night."
"I'll bet she regrets that by now."
"You should have been asleep too," James tried, but Remus shook his head.
"How could you suggest I take my prefect duties so lightly?"
Sirius barked out a laugh.
"Are we actually going to get breakfast?" Peter asked it was a very reasonable question.
"That depends on how you handle heights, I think."
"How and why?"
"You'll see."
There was a group of Hufflepuff first years heading down in front of them and Remus couldn't have planned it better if he'd tried because two steps in the great hall they screamed, frozen in place clinging to each other for dear life.
Sirius' face lit up like he didn't have a care in the world and ran ahead, James following while Peter hung back.
"Mother of Merlin!" James yelled as he passed, much too fast, through the doors clinging on Sirius. Sirius just stared in awe, looking down then up then down again.
"What?" Peter asked as he and Remus passed through the entryway. Peter squeaked staring down.
Underneath them appeared to be the endless sky that the ceiling mimicked, above them the floor they should be standing on.
"Brilliant, Moony," Sirius whispered to him. An upside-down M burned in the back hall as though a signature. Only the memorial and the tables were left untouched because Remus wasn't that cruel. Several students had managed to brave the sky walk to actually get food, but not nearly as many as there normally would be for an end term breakfast.
"Thanks."
Sirius pushed over the two Hufflepuffs, still frozen in fear, making them scream again before they scrambled back out the door.
"Why are there more Ravenclaws than Gryffindors?" James pouted, trying to look like it was no big deal as he led them to the table. "I am disappointed in the courage of our house."
"Says the quidditch captain who won't let go of my arm."
"Shut it."
"I'm glad it isn't cloudy. This would be a lot less hilarious if it wasn't cloudy."
McGonagall actually looked impressed when she approached the staff table. Flitwick was thrilled and refused when asked to reverse the spell for the more squeamish students, instead of going on a rant about how brilliant the charm work was.
"I think he might pee himself," Sirius whispered.
"I think Lockhart already did." James pointed at the entrance where the first year had entered leaving them both in a fit of giggles.
Remus smiled at them and winked at Peter.
"Mischief Managed."
