Chapter 6
Electricity
"It crept up on me, it takes over- electricity." -Electricity, Arctic Monkeys
Regina wasn't sure how much time had passed. It felt as though none had passed at all while also seeming like she had been sitting on her couch, alone, forever. She hated to admit it, but she was…sad. She had gotten what she wanted…Emma was back. Henry was happy. Where did it leave her though?
That wasn't a good question. She knew where it left her. Alone on her couch. She had tried to watch a little television, but the noise seemed to make the suffocating loneliness even lonelier. After she turned it off she poured herself a glass of wine. Standing in the kitchen was when her clothes started to feel suffocating as well. She felt…trapped. Not in her own home, but in the mess she had made.
So she took the opportunity to do something she rarely did- lounge in actual lounge clothes. She normally liked to be presentable, not necessarily for other people, but as a matter of self pride. It seemed fitting that since she was not feeling prideful she could dress to match the part. Freeing herself from her white blouse was euphoric. The normally soft fabric had begun to feel scratchy against her skin.
She questioned whether or not to remove her bra, but figured 'what the hell', made quick work of the latch, and tossed it aside. The cool air of her bedroom hit her nipples and it felt like a violation so she folded in on herself while searching for her comfier clothes. Running a hand through her dark locks and pushing them back she sighed in the openness of her room.
This sucked.
She rolled her eyes at her self-pity and huffed before grabbing a white t-shirt that was nestled within a drawer of things she never wore. Her eyes caught a glimpse of the logo and she felt the sadness within her nuzzle deeper within her chest. 'Storybrooke Town Fair' was written across the front while the word 'VOLUNTEER' was unceremoniously plastered across the back. There had been a time, or at least moments, where everyone was happy. Of course, Regina knew the people she was surrounded by could never truly love her, but they didn't know that. Any dislike was written off as local politics or town gossip. She'd take dislike over exclusion any day.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath in, willing her thoughts to leave her be. It's not like she was really being excluded. She knew that one action wouldn't change everything overnight. She refused to let any amount of sadness set her back. A promise was made to Henry and she intended to keep it.
Regina tossed the shirt back into the drawer and opted for another one. She tossed on a plain, white t-shirt and grabbed a pair of leggings to slip on. She found herself feeling too exposed and tossed on a loose crewneck sweatshirt. It felt like a warm hug and Regina found it a bit more comforting than she'd like to admit.
After she sulked down the stairs, she went to retrieve her glass of wine and tried to relax on the couch once more. She had obviously been unsuccessful, because that is how she got here.
Alone. On the couch. With the TV still off and an untouched glass of wine on the end table. Her bottom lip was becoming sore from the small area she had anxiously been chewing on. It wasn't quite late enough to go to bed, but she had no idea what to do with herself. Her thoughts began to wander to her interactions with Emma while the blonde was in the Enchanted Forest. She'd do anything for a moment alone with the woman again. She had no idea where they stood or even if she imagined everything.
Tired of the thinking and not doing, she grabbed her phone ready to call Emma.
"It's too soon." She mused out loud to herself. Before she could contemplate the matter any further she heard her doorbell ring throughout her home. Her heart sped up, because she could not think of anyone who'd be interested in seeing her right now except for one person. At least, she hoped it was who she thought it was. Her palms began sweating. For all the wanting she had done just to speak to Emma, she didn't spend any time thinking about what to actually say.
She steeled herself once she reached the front door, not wanting her nerves to reveal themselves. She painted a smile on her face to seem more stable, but as she opened the door her smile fell as her jaw dropped.
"Oh, Henry…" She gasped, not really believing her eyes. She fell onto her knees to get on his level and wrapped him in a tight hug. She was trying not to cry, but she felt tears brim in her eyes. As her hand caressed the boy's hair she looked up to find a tall blonde smiling down at her and taking in their interaction. She couldn't muster any words, but the smile on Emma's face seemed to acknowledge her thankfulness.
"Hey, Mom!" He said as he returned her hug. She could stay like this forever, but of course, that was not Henry's plan. He pulled back and she stood back up in an effort to conceal her disappointment at how short their embrace was. Emma was looking over her inquisitively, almost shocked, and before she could inquire as to why, Henry made his presence known again. "Are you okay?"
"What? Of course I'm okay." She began to laugh at the boy, not understanding why he would ask. That is when she noticed he was eyeing her strangely as well. The two of them almost looked the exact same. Both of their heads were slightly cocked to the side with their eyebrows slightly furled in confusion.
"Wha-?" She began as she followed their gaze. That is when she realized she was not dressed for company. Her arms folded over herself, mostly embarrassed she wasn't wearing a bra in Emma's presence.
"You never dress like that before 9…" Henry started. "And it's…" He looked between her and Emma, waiting for someone to give him the time. She smiled at the boy's silent request, and hoped he never stopped needing her for small things. She looked at her watch, before remembering she had taken it off upstairs when she was changing.
"I've got it." Emma chuckled softly, looking amused at the brunette's state. "It is…" The blonde looked at her own watch but scrunched her face for a moment before shrugging and reaching for her phone. "I never learned how to read that thing. It's 7:53." She said, proud to be of service as she locked her phone and tucked it into her back pocket.
When the green eyes looked up at their audience, Emma was met with blank stares.
"What?" The blonde sounded semi-defensive and Regina had to bite her lip to keep from giggling at the woman. Not because she couldn't read an analog clock, but because she was just so endearing. The brunette's earlier sadness had been all but washed away by her presence. Emma just rolled her eyes before looking down at Henry. "Stay in school kid." She patted him on the back before he ran inside, no longer caring about what Regina was wearing.
Both women watched him run further into the home with love in their eyes. When they looked back at one another they shared a soft smile. Regina went to thank the woman before her, but Emma spoke first.
"Are you though? Okay?" She asked gently, referring to Henry's earlier question. It seemed a bit more loaded than the boy's inquiry about her clothes and Regina found herself smiling at Emma's concern for her.
"I'm much better now that you two are here." She said earnestly, not giving herself time to think about the honesty of her emission.
"Yeah…" Emma dragged the word out, looking like something was eating at her. "Look…" the woman began, "I'm sorry about earlier, back at Gold's." The blonde gestured over her shoulder like the antique shop was right behind her. Before Regina could even interject, Emma continued. "I just didn't want you to be uncomfortable or feel like you had to come to dinner if you didn't want to."
"I appreciate your concern, Miss Swan, but you have nothing to apologize for." Regina spoke surely, though it did make her feel better that she weighed on Emma's mind. The blonde gave her a soft smile like what she said wasn't fully true, but after a moment they both found themselves lost in each other's eyes- trying to have a conversation without words.
A cool breeze surrounded the two women and Regina realized they were still standing in the doorway.
"Come in." Regina gestured inside her home. "As a matter of fact…help me find Henry, if you don't mind. He's being too quiet…" She was glad to have the boy home, but it was never a good sign when he was home and the house was silent.
As Emma walked past her she couldn't help but feel pulled towards the woman the closer she got. She could've been imagining it, but it seemed the blonde had stopped for just a fraction of a second when they were close enough to touch.
They half-heartedly searched the home, not sharing any words, before they reached the living room. They found Henry fast asleep on the couch still wearing his coat.
"Poor kid is beat." Emma said softly and chuckled before brushing some hair out of the boy's face. Regina smiled at the interaction. It was clear Emma loved Henry very much, and she wondered why she ever tried to keep them apart. "Can I take him up?" Green eyes looked up the stairs before looking back to Regina, signaling that the blonde was referring to putting Henry in bed.
Confusion must have been evident on Regina's face because Emma continued:
"He's so tired. And we…" Emma seemed to hesitate before smiling. The woman seemed a bit nervous. "If it's okay with you I thought we could catch up. I can head to Granny's and come back in the morning, but I figured Henry should stay here." It was only then that Regina noticed Emma was holding a small backpack in her hand's, presumably full of Henry's things. "Plus…I really don't want to be within 100 feet of David and Mary Margaret tonight." Emma said and Regina had to quickly toss away the mental image that had just been planted in her mind.
"Nonsense." Regina replied, before realizing her words in combination with the face she was making at the mental image she had just discarded probably gave Emma the wrong idea. "I mean nonsense. You don't need to stay at Granny's. And I'm happy to have Henry at home." She said, but then realized she wasn't sure how long Emma was intending for Henry to be here so she added in quickly: "For the night."
Emma seemed to pick up on Regina's thought process and looked at her with knowing eyes, before breathing in and painting a stern look in her face.
"But no funny business." The blonde joked, and Regina felt a warm blush color her cheeks. She wanted to quip back, but she was too nervous to be that smooth.
"You don't need to stay at Granny's because I have plenty of guest rooms." She returned, knowing that Emma was only joking. They both smiled softly at each other before breaking out into soft giggles.
"You know what?" Emma started, "Why don't you take him up? I know you've missed him."
"So have you, Miss Swan. You've seen him far less than I have as of late. I insist." Regina gestured up the stairs, giving Emma permission to take their son up to his bed.
"I don't even know which room is his, now that I think about it." Emma said. "Why don't we take him together?" Regina smiled softly at the woman. Henry's room was incredibly obvious and she was sure the blonde could find it easily. She didn't know if this was an olive branch, but she'd take it.
Regina led the way and Emma laid the boy gently in his bed. The blonde awkwardly wiggled his coat off without disturbing him too much and once he was tucked in they both said their own separate 'goodnights'. Emma was last and Regina watched quietly from the doorway, smiling at the blonde's affection towards Henry. She decided, officially, that she could share. Henry deserved to have this much love showered over him.
When Emma made her way towards the door, their eyes met and they both smiled at each other, for seemingly the hundredth time tonight. The blonde began leaving the room and their bodies were dangerously close in the doorway. This time Emma did stop and Regina's breath hitched in her chest.
Emma was close enough not just to touch, but also that she could feel the warmth coming off of the woman's skin. There was a palpable tension between them before green eyes met brown. They were almost locked in a dance for a moment- neither one was sure who would speak first.
"Can we talk?" The blonde's voice was low, barely audible. Regina was entranced, but still managed to nod her head as she reached to close Henry's door gently behind them.
They made their way back down to the living room they had just carried Henry from. Emma shrugged out of the jacket she had been wrapped in and tossed it onto an armchair across from her before plopping down onto the couch.
Henry and Emma could be twins. Regina laughed internally at the unceremonious way Emma had gotten comfortable. She was glad the blonde felt safe enough to relax here.
"Glass of wine?" Regina asked, being the first to break their silence since leaving Henry's room.
"God yes." Emma breathed out. She wasn't surprised by the reaction. If she had gone through the day the blonde just had she'd need a whole bottle. Regina smiled before moving to exit the room.
"I'll only be a moment." She said, leaving Emma alone on the couch. When she reached the kitchen she took a deep breath in. She couldn't believe after everything that had happened recently that Henry was here, asleep in his bed, and that Emma was sitting comfortably on her couch.
She grabbed a clean wine glass and realized she didn't know what Emma's wine preference was. She hesitated, not sure which bottle to pour from. After racking her brain for a memory of Emma drinking wine and coming up empty, she decided to just grab one of each. Before she could get in her head about whether Emma preferred her wine chilled or at room temperature she quickly exited the kitchen after grabbing a clean glass for herself.
"I wasn't sure what you preferred, so I brought options." Regina announced her arrival, while a soft blush colored her cheeks. She hadn't had any guests to entertain for quite some time so she hoped she wasn't being too much. As she made her way around the couch to join Emma, she heard the blonde laugh.
"I like any of the options that are wine." The woman joked before asking "Which is your favorite?"
"The red." Regina noted, before uncorking the bottle.
"Red it is." Emma decided. She poured a glass, a little too full than what she normally would, and offered it to Emma. The woman looked beyond grateful and it made Regina chuckle.
"The mead in the Enchanted Forest didn't treat you well, I take it?" Emma looked shocked, as if she had been lied to.
"There was mead?!" The blonde's jaw might as well have been on the floor.
"Of course, Miss Swan! We weren't animals before coming here." Regina winked at her, signifying she was playing.
"Mary Margaret is such a…" Emma stopped herself before anything too unkind could make its way out. "Good mom…I guess." The blonde rolled her eyes. "She told me you all didn't have alcohol. I'm going to miss the fun Mary Margaret…" the woman pouted half-heartedly.
"Don't worry." Regina chuckled, "I promise you did not miss out on much." She shuddered, trying to shake out the thought of the drinks she had before getting to taste the finer alcohols the Enchanted Forest had to offer. She reached out to pour herself a glass of wine, but noticed Emma was making a face at her own glass.
"Is something the matter?" Regina questioned softly. Emma gave her a tight lipped smile and she realized- "Not a fan of the red?" The blonde scrunched her face a little bit and shook her head no, to which Regina couldn't help but chuckle. She reached out to take the glass from the blonde and brought it to her own lips.
It wasn't her intention to maintain eye contact with Emma, but she did. As the wine met her taste buds she couldn't help but to softly moan at how good it was. A blush painted the blonde's cheeks and the moment began to feel intimate, so Regina broke eye contact before uncorking the bottle of white.
After handing Emma a new glass, she tucked her feet under her, turning to face the other woman on the couch. She caught the green eyed gaze eyeing her attire which made her realize what she was wearing.
"Oh! Let me go put on something a bit more suited for company." Regina blushed a little at her current state and began to move off of the couch before feeling soft fingers gripping her hand. She was grateful for the long sleeves, because she could feel goosebumps traveling up her arm.
"Regina…" Emma started, smiling up at her. "Stay." She wasn't sure what came over her, but that is exactly what she did. She made her way back to her seat, feeling a bit sad when she had to let Emma's hand go. "Besides…" The same hand she was just missing placed itself on her knee. "I think you look adorable."
The blonde smiled and Regina wanted to refute the statement. Never had someone dared to call the Evil Queen 'adorable'. She almost wanted to be mad…but the thought of Emma finding her adorable made her stomach fill with butterflies and she couldn't help but grip the hand that was on top of her knee.
A comfortable silence fell over them, both just enjoying being with one another physically rather than through magic. Both seemed a bit scared to bring anything too serious up, not wanting to ruin the moment of peace. However, Regina could tell Emma was deep and thought, and she had questions of her own. So she decided it was now or never.
"What did you want to talk about, Miss Swan?" Regina inquired.
"Don't do that…" Emma spoke softly, not making eye contact with her, instead the woman's green eyes were focused on their hands that were gently resting on one another.
"Do what?" Regina was confused, she had only asked a simple question.
"Don't…you know…talk to me like you would've talked to me before. 'Miss Swan' and all. I mean…I don't care that you call me that. But it's just us right now, you know?" Emma finally looked up at her. "I know we haven't talked about any of it, but I feel…closer to you somehow- different towards you. I guess I just…do you feel that way too?"
Regina was puzzled by the admission from the blonde. She shouldn't have been, Emma had always been relatively forward. Something about the woman being so forward with something she would've most likely just left unspoken made her drawn to the blonde even more.
"Of course I do, Emma." She made sure to say the woman's name and squeezed her hand. "To be quite honest, while I haven't known what to make of any of this, I've found myself…feeling things for you." Regina felt incredibly vulnerable and it was hard for her to let herself say anything at all, but she wanted Emma to know she wasn't alone.
A sigh of relief came from the blonde and she visibly relaxed, so Regina continued:
"I don't mean to treat you like I did before. In fact…I don't want to ever treat you that way again." She spoke earnestly. "Emma…I'm so embarrassed of the way I treated you. The only reason I've been hesitant to be less cordial with you is because I wasn't sure it was what you wanted. I don't want you to feel like you have to forgive me or think of me a certain way because of some visions we had."
"I don't know what I want." Emma spoke. Regina couldn't be hurt, because it seemed as though Emma was saying it to herself- coaching herself through her thoughts. "I mean…I don't know that I can use the word forgive…because that's a lot to unpack. I don't even know what there is to forgive…but I don't hold what happened to Henry against you. Oddly enough…I'm not even mad at you for trying to put me under a sleeping curse."
Regina's first reaction was to be shocked, but then she just felt herself cringing internally at her actions.
"I feel like I should be…but I'm not. When I was fighting to get back to Storybrooke that's when it clicked for me…I get it. You were…" Emma gestured broadly into the air with her free hand. "Fighting for Henry in the only way you knew how to. I can't speak for everyone else, but I can't be mad at you for the curse either. If I had never been sent here by David and Mary Maragaret I would've never had Henry."
Regina had never thought of it that way. She was more than ashamed of her actions, but she couldn't bring herself to imagine a world without Henry.
"As for our issues…that took two parties." Emma began again, meeting her gaze and looking somewhat apologetic. "I kind of just waltzed in here and shook everything up. If someone came in and tried to take Henry from me I'd raise hell."
"Emma, I appreciate what you're trying to do, but really-" Regina began but was interrupted.
"No, let me finish." The blonde spoke, and Regina once again found herself following Emma's instructions. "I'm sorry for how I handled everything. I don't want you to think of me that way…as some kind of enemy." Regina laughed a bit, almost sarcastically.
"Emma…I promise you that you are not the villain in this story. While I was hurt by your actions, I see now that you were only doing what you thought, or maybe even what was, in Henry's best intentions. I can't blame you for that." Emma smiled a bit in response, so she continued. "I think we have a lot of mending to do and understandings to form with each other. That being said…we cannot do that without accountability. So Emma…" Regina swallowed thickly. The only time she can remember saying what she was about to say was also to the blonde. "I'm sorry."
Surprisingly, the words didn't taste like poison. Instead, they felt freeing. It was one thing to have guilt, but to admit guilt and remorse was another. It almost felt euphoric and Regina would have laughed if the circumstances were different.
"I'm so sorry for how I treated you. And how I treated Henry. I don't want you to ever think you're an enemy or don't have a place in his life. You are his mother, Emma. I am forever indebted to you for bringing him into this world and thus into my life." Reigna said surely, never breaking eye contact with the blonde.
"He's lucky to have you, you know?" Emma said in return. "I may be his mother, but you'll always be his mom. He loves you, Regina. And I know you love him. I hope in the future this can go without saying…but I think there's plenty of space in his life for both of us."
"I agree." Regina smiled. "No matter what does or doesn't happen between us, I promise that won't change." She hated the idea of them never exploring anything between them, but felt it was important for Emma to know that she was committed fully to having a better relationship with her with no strings attached.
Another silence fell over them, both absorbing everything the other had to say. For the first time in what felt like an entire lifetime…Regina felt hopeful. It was terrifying and exhilarating all at once. She was broken out of her thoughts when the blonde spoke.
"Regina, I-" Emma started while setting her wine glass on the coffee table. She seemed torn, but not for long before she continued. "Ah, fuck it."
Before Regina could even think both of Emma's hands were on either side of her face, pulling her in. She was only shocked for a moment before the blonde's lips met her own. Every nerve ending in her body seemed to catch on fire and she needed more. More of Emma's scent, more of Emma's lips, more of…Emma. Her hands gripped the blonde's hips and squeezed firmly. There was so much going on inside of her that she needed an outlet for some of it- she could only squeeze Emma's hips so tightly.
When Emma softly moaned against her lips, it proved to be too much for Regina and she felt some of the tingles that were firing within her escape. She realized this was some of the extra magic she had swirling within her from what she absorbed at the well when shortly after one of the lamps on the end table blew with an audible crackle. This caused the room to become a bit dimmer. Emma never broke their kiss but mumbled against Regina.
"What was-" she started before Regina pulled away, breathing heavily. Emma immediately pulled her back in closer, almost trapping her lips before the brunette could respond.
"Not important." She got out before their lips crashed into each other's again hungrily. She felt intoxicated and the air around them was so heavy that it almost hurt to breathe in. When Emma's tongue grazed her bottom lip, seeking entry, the other lamp on the end table blew. This left them in mostly darkness, with only the light from the hallway and kitchen illuminating the living room.
It felt as though Emma was going to question it again, so Regina pulled her on top of her, not at all caring when her semi-full wine glass hit the floor. She grunted as she felt the blonde's weight on top of her. It took everything in her to not rip her clothes off right then, needing to feel Emma against her.
Her nipples begged for contact as they strained against the layers of clothing she was wearing, so she pulled Emma closer. They continued to attack each other's lips, almost animalistically, as their bodies craved more contact. Regina unconsciously spread her legs open to bring Emma closer to her. When the blonde settled between her legs and moved back up to continue kissing her, that is when she felt the woman's throbbing length press firmly against her center.
A moan ripped its way out of her body and she was sure the whole town could've heard it. She didn't have time to feel embarrassed or like she should be quieter because as Emma swallowed the rest of her moan in a blistering kiss, electricity crackled across the house as all the lights went out.
It was enough to give them both pause, even though it was hard for both of them to pull back enough for them to look around the room.
"What the…?" Emma asked, still settled in between Regina's legs and close enough that she could feel the blonde's breath tickle her cheeks.
"I seem to have a bit of excess magic from absorbing the magic at the well." Regina said as her chest rose and fell rapidly, trying to catch her breath.
"Hmm…" Emma acknowledged. "Here I thought I was just that good." Emma chuckled as her dick twitched against Regina.
"I imagine you're better." Regina whispered before grabbing Emma's neck and pulling her back down to bring their lips together again. She waved her hand to bring the power back on before placing the same hand on the small of Emma's back pushing them closer together.
"You're definitely about to find out." Emma said through a smirk.
A/N: I hope you enjoyed this chapter! Seeing your alls feedback and kudos has made me even more excited for the story. Let me know what you think!
If you skipped any NSFW content: Emma decided to kiss Regina and it got a bit steamy. There wasn't a lot of plot that occurred, but in the heat of the moment Regina wasn't able to control the excess magic she absorbed from the well. Because of this, it began to make its way out of her and essentially made the power go out and blew all the lights.
