Chapter 4
"What's he like?"
It was what Serafall had asked the mother of her soon-to-be escort as she stood before her father's office.
"Well, in my opinion, he's an absolute cutie who can be a bit silly at times," the blonde replied with a smile.
Serafall's eye twitched at that response. It's not that she didn't like Clara, but the women could be rather aggravating. Clara tended to involve Serafall, voluntary or not, in her quest for amusement. One moment she could name was when she was six when she convinced Serafall to dress in a mismatched way, then proceeded to show it to her parents. Thanks to that event, Serafall's parents thought that her sense of fashion was askew, and her mother started to lecture her every day to 'help fix her baby's sense of fashion.'
It brightened her mood a bit when Serafall realized that she was going to meet a fellow sufferer.
When Serafall opened the door, she first saw her father sitting behind his desk, smiling at her, and Gilbert, the husband of Clara, standing behind her father, giving her a polite bow when she entered. Then there was the third male in the room.
Like Gilbert and most others in the Sitri territory, he had jet black hair that he kept short. His eyes were purple like his mother's, in honesty, Clara was one of the more visually unique devils in the Sitri territory. He was also taller than her and stood at what looked like 5'10". With how unique devils tended to look, he was rather plain except for the fact that he resembled the fallen a little.
"Seeing as everyone is here, let's get this over with," her father gathered everyone's attention.
"Sera, this is Magnus Astrea. From this day forth he will stay by your side as your escort. Magnus this is my daughter Serafall, please take care of her."
Magnus nodded at her father and turned to her.
"Hello Lady Serafall, it will be my pleasure to be your escort," Magnus said with a polite smile and a slight bow.
She too gave a polite smile.
"It will be my pleasure as well."
"Well then, you two should head out for a walk and get further acquainted while I and Magnus' parents talk about where to go from here."
Serafall and Magnus both nodded and left the office.
Magnus hadn't read very far into DxD, so he didn't know if Lord Sitri eventually made an appearance. So for Magnus, the lady walking beside him was the first 'canon character' that he had met so far.
"I hear that you prefer to use sword over magic?"
"Yes, Lady-"
"Call me Sera or Serafall if you must. We're going to be with each other for a long time, so there is no need to be so formal all the time," she said with a smile.
Ah, there's the side of her that introduced herself as Levia-tan to Issei in the future.
"Sure, thing Serafall. But yes, I'd rather use a sword than magic."
"How strong are you?"
"According to my father, I'm at the peak of High-Class and I will be an Ultimate-Class soon," his father had told him how strong he was yesterday, and boy was Magnus surprised. He never noticed how much he was pushing my parents due to his lack of skill in magic. It was a rather embarrassing moment for Magnus, and it made him determined to study magic a little bit more, even if he couldn't use it, he should at least be able to identify certain magics.
When Magnus asked why he didn't tell him earlier, the response made his eye twitch.
"Your mother thought it was cute and wanted to see how long it take you to figure it out while being there to see your face when you did."
"Really? Your magic doesn't feel that strong at all, it feels like it's somewhere in Middle-Class."
He nodded at that, "My magic is indeed low, but my physical strength and sword skills make up for it."
"Can I see for myself?"
"Sure, how do you want to do it?"
"Well, I'm in Ultimate-Class, so if we fought you would be able to go all out! Let's go to the training field!"
Magnus could tell that Serafall was progressively getting more excited as the conversation went on, so he decided to follow her to the training field. Though, he could tell that she was going into this fight with the mentality of fighting another magic-user. Just like if correctly in the right circumstances, magic could be deadly to non-magic users, even if the magic users were weaker. The same situation applies to sword users, if Magnus attacks at the right time, then he could end up doing some serious damage to her.
It was after coming to that conclusion, did he realize that she was still Serafall Sitri, not Satan Serafall Leviathan who had centuries of experience. He also realized that because she was still inexperienced, he had a chance of winning despite being weaker. And while Serafall is different from most devils, she was still part of a race that appreciated the strength of a person, and a victory would bring a good first impression on his part.
Now he was even more motivated to give it his all.
He paused for a second.
"Give it my all, huh?"
He had a small smile on his face when he realized that he come a long way from the guy who just did the bare minimum.
"Yeah, let's do just that. Get ready Serafall, I'm about to show you a fraction of the might of someone who was one of the strongest beings in another world."
Serafall watched as her sparring partner stood on the other side of the field with a steel longsword in his right hand.
She used her ice magic to make a small object in the shape of a coin and held it up.
"When this hits the ground, we start!" She shouted from her end and could see him.
While she didn't need to shout due to their senses as devils being enhanced, she was too excited not to; after all, this was a new type of opponent that she had yet to face! She flicked the coin into the air and got ready to cast spells as soon as it landed.
"I'll start with-"
BOOM
The loud sound caused her to shut her eyes and before she could flinch, she stopped herself. Why? Because she could feel something cold on her neck. And when she opened her eyes, Serafall could see the grinning face of her escort holding the point of the longsword to her neck.
"What-"
"I do believe that this is my victory, Serafall," Magnus said as he pulled his sword away from her neck and backed away.
It was only after that did Serafall regain her composure.
"I've never been in a fight like that."
He moved too fast. Serafall couldn't even track him.
"Is this what it means to fight with your body?"
She had been in a few skirmishes with the fallen and angels, and the both of them fought the same way as did devils did, with magic. A fight like this where one fought with their body was completely new to her.
Then, she realized something.
"Do humans fight the same way?"
Humans did not have the magical advantage that many of the other supernatural races had. That was why magical contracts with mages had been emphasized in her education.
"But I've never fought against humans who are strong with a sword."
Exorcists would sometimes show up in the skirmishes with the angels, but none of them were any good with the sword.
She had told herself that no one underestimated sword users after Arthur and Excalibur when she was talking with Sirzechs at the party, but now Serafall realized that even if she didn't underestimate them, she still had no experience facing them.
It was a worrying thought that she might have died had Magnus been an enemy. It would be disastrous for her if a human who knew how to use one of the holy swords the Church provided to its full potential appeared in one of her future fights. Doubly so if the Satan Descendants are still planning on restarting the Great War.
"But the chance to get some more experience with that type of fighting is right in front of me, isn't it?"
Yes, if she sparred with him regularly, then she would know how to handle a fight with a skilled sword user. That's not to say that Serafall would automatically be able to defeat any sword user easily, but it did give her experience, and it would give Magnus the experience of fighting a magic user.
Little did Serafall know, that in the future when Magnus would become one of the strongest sword users, other sword users were, in fact, easy to deal with compared to the spars the two would have. But that story is for another day.
So, with her mind made up, she grinned at him.
"Want to fight again?"
She got a grin in return before he charged at her again.
"Yeah, the two of us are going to get along great."
If Serafall seems a bit lackluster to you, it's because she is. Right now, she's just a young woman in her early 20s who has never fought against a skilled sword user. For reference, Arthurian legends were said to have occurred around the 5th century. Currently, Magnus and Co. are in the mid-1400s. And Serafall's father won't put her in a situation that will kill her, so either by the era she was born in or by the meddling of her father, Serafall has yet to meet a strong sword user like Magnus.
