It is a rewritten cycle. The events are going differently. Eragon doesn't start out as a farm boy. A dragon does not hatch for him right away. This is, in my opinion, a more realistic version with a more involved Galbatorix that uses its abilities rather than just sitting in a castle. It is necessary to read the cycle.
