Thanks to all the generous tips from last night, Fey's boss was happy enough to let her go home early that night, which meant that she could have an early start on her first day at U.A. Academy. She figured she would have time to relax a bit before her big day, but circumstances being as they were, she ended up spending most of the morning getting her three triplet sisters ready for school and taking care of her sick mother, who could barely get out of bed that morning. She made breakfast for everyone, got her sisters dressed and sent them off to school when the bus came for them. She had packed their lunches for the day and made food for her mother if she ever got hungry during the day. After making sure her mother was comfortable, Fey set out to school herself, dreading her first day with every fiber of her body.
Since school had already started, everyone from her class would know each other except for her. She would be the shiny new thing that everybody would want to know more about and this made her uncomfortable. Not that she was shy by any means, many would consider her to be friendly even, but she did not like to talk about herself very much. She had sides of her that she did not want other people to find out about, notably what kind of job she did at night to help pay for rent and feed her family. Even her own mother did not know about it. She had told her that she had found a job in a café doing night shifts because it was the only time she could work while going to school. The last part was true, but the first part, she could only wish for it to be so...
After a short walk and a short bus ride to the school station, Fey stood in front of the impressive building, staring at it in awe. She could scarcely believe that she was actually standing in front of U. A. Academy, the university that her dad had graduated from to become a hero. She felt slightly scared at the idea of entering, kind of like imposter syndrome. Was she really worthy of attending such a prestigious school? If her dad were here, would he approve? There was no doubt in her mind that he would. He would have been so proud to see his little girl get accepted at the same school he attended. That was partly why she had gotten a recommendation from one of her father's old friends back in the Philippines. They had both attended U. A. together as young adults and they were very close. There was another reason she had received such a glowing recommendation but... Fey could not be entirely sure if it was actually true. She preferred not to think about it and concentrated her attention on the huge building in front of her. Regardless of how she had gotten here, she was now determined to make something of herself. She wanted to be a hero, just like her father.
Fey entered the main hall of the university, trying to figure out where her homeroom was going to be. She checked her schedule, which marked which class she would be a part of and where her homeroom was. Class 1-A... She figured homeroom would be one the first floor so she set out to find it, and sure enough, there it was. A massive door inscribed "1-A" in huge font stood between her and her new life. She took a deep breath, feeling the butterflies in her stomach growing even more restless now that she was so close to her goal. She exhaled loudly before knocking on the door. Her heart started pounding even more when she heard footsteps on the other side of the door. Soon enough, a tall figure appeared at the door, looking particularly disheveled and sleep-deprived. Fey figured he had to be her new teacher: Mr. Aizawa...
"About time you showed up newbie," he said in a monotone voice. "Come in. We were just about to start..."
Fey gulped as she timidly followed after him into the classroom. He closed the door behind them with the heel of his foot, then nonchalantly walked up in front of the class.
"Alright listen up everyone," he announced to the class. "As of today, we'll have a new classmate with us. She's a transfer student from the Philippines..." He turns to her. "Present yourself to the rest of the class or whatever..."
He then plopped down lazily into his chair, wrapping a thick blanket around his shoulders as he did. The blanket swallowed him up almost completely, only leaving the top of his head visible. Fey gulped down once again. Shaking slightly, she turned towards the class. She had made sure up to this point not to make eye contact with any of the other students, but now, she was forced to face them. After taking a short breath, she addressed the class.
"H-Hi..." she stuttered nervously. "My name's Fey Salvador... o-or Salvador Fey. I'm not used to the grammar yet but... A-Anyways..." She paused, trying to get her bearings. She took another deep breath before continuing. "I recently moved here from the Philippines to study at U. A. I hope to get to know some of you very soo-..."
Her eyes met with the rest of her classmates and, to her utter horror, she realized that she recognized many of their faces. Specifically many of the boys that were in her class, and to her utter dismay, they too also recognized her by the looks on their faces. Many were shocked to see her again and some seemed... much too eager to have her in their class. But none were as horrified as Tenya Iida, whose face turned a bright shade of red as he realized who she was.
Many of the other girls started to notice the boys' reaction to her and started whispering to each other.
"Hey Ochaco," Mina whispered as she leaned to the side of her desk so that she could hear her. "What in the world is up with the guys?"
"I have no clue," Uraraka replied. "It's like she cast a spell on them... Maybe it's her quirk?"
"Quiet," Aizawa interjected. "No need to take your seat, Fey. You'll all be joining me outside for some tests..."
Complaints started to rise from the rest of the class.
"Awww but didn't we already get tested?" Kirishima whined.
"You'll go through as many tests as needed, young Kirishima," the teacher grumbled. "Now change into your sports gear and meet me in the courtyard."
With that, Aizawa got up and shuffled out of the classroom. Fey stood bewildered in front of the class, not knowing what to do or how to react. Her eyes kept glancing back at Tenya, who now was actively trying to avoid eye contact with her. In fact, he wanted to avoid her so badly that he was the first one to storm out of the classroom in a hurry, making sure not to run but walking fast enough so that nobody would catch up to him. Fey remained stunned in front of the class until Ochaco and Mina stepped up to greet her.
"Hey! You have really nice feathers!" the brown-haired girl smiled. "Uuh... I hope that wasn't rude of me to say."
Fey stared at her for a while, before shaking herself out of her stupor to smile back at her.
"No, not at all!" she replied happily. "In fact, I really appreciate the compliment."
"Yeaah seriously! Your feathers are way too cool!" Mina said to her excitedly. "And your wings? Man, I wish I had wings like that!"
Fey laughed at her last comment. Having the two of them come up to talk to her so openly made her feel a lot more at ease. But as soon as she started to feel more relaxed, she noticed one of the boys from her class staring smugly at her. He had been one of her clients the night before; a young man with short, spiky blond hair. The way he stared at her made her feel incredibly uneasy, like he was some kind of predator eyeing his next meal. She turned away from him, directing her attention to the two girls in front of her.
"Hey I'm still new to the school," she started, forcing a smile to push away the uneasy feeling that pitted her stomach. "Could you two show me where the locker rooms are?"
"Sure!" Ochaco agreed cheerfully.
"We'll show you around, don't you worry!" Mina added with equal enthusiasm.
"By the way, your Japanese is surprisingly good for a foreigner! I-... hope that wasn't offensive either..."
Uraraka scratched her head shamefully but Fey reassured her with a gentle hand to the shoulder.
"It's good to hear it from a native speaker," she said to her. "And don't worry so much. I'm a really laid back person."
"O-Oh that's good," Ochaco replied. "By the way, my name's Ochaco! And this is Mina."
"Heyyoo!" Ashido answered enthusiastically.
"And I believe your name's Fey, right?"
"Yep."
"Well Fey, stick with us and we'll make sure you fit in in no time!"
"Yeah! We'll introduce you to the rest of the class when we have the chance!" Mina added. "Not too sure what was up with all the guys just now... It's like they saw you and all of them got super embarrassed or something..."
Crap! They noticed, Fey thought to herself. She laughed nervously, trying to feign ignorance.
"I-I'm not too sure what you mean," she defended herself. "But I know my appearance can sometimes be a bit shocking at first..."
"I don't know... When the guys first saw me they didn't react that way at all." Mina pondered for a moment, then shrugged her shoulders. "Whatever! We should get changed before Aizawa blows a gasket because we're late."
Fey nodded in agreement and let the two girls lead her to the girl's changing room. It was a short walk from homeroom to the changing room, and once they had all gotten changed into their sports uniforms, Fey followed them to the courtyard where most of the class was already assembled. Most of the boys started blushing when they saw her again, with Iida still being hellbent on absolutely not looking at her. His face was still red with embarrassment, but most of the initial shock was gone. Bakugou was still eyeing her like she was some kind of piece of meat which made her sneer in disgust. Sticking close to Mina and Ochaco, Fey entered the line-up with the rest of her classmates, awaiting Aizawa's instructions.
"Alright new girl," he spoke directly at her. "Since you didn't get to do any of the starting physical tests, I'll have some of your classmates challenge you to a variety of tests so that I can get a better idea of what your limitations are..."
All eyes shifted towards Fey, except Iida's of course. He remained completely stiff and motionless while the rest of her classmates stared at her with curious eyes. They were all wondering what kind of quirk she had, if it extended just to her physical appearance or if she had some secret powers hidden away. Mina and Ochaco tried to be reassuring with their glances, motioning her to take center stage alongside their teacher. Fey approached him reluctantly.
"I'll do my best," she proclaimed with a determined look.
"We'll see about that..." he said flatly. "To start off, I'll have you hit these targets mid-air to test your flying capacity..."
Simple enough, she thought. She nodded in agreement and followed him further away from the group. As he moved away from the class, he grabbed a stack of ceramic plates meant for smashing. The idea was that he would throw the plates up in the air and she would have to smash them before they hit the ground.
Fey watched him attentively, bracing herself for when he would inevitably throw the plates. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, he suddenly threw the ceramic disks without warning. Caught off guard, Fey pushed hard against the ground to propel herself as fast as possible towards her first target. She flew like a bullet to the first plate, smashing it with her fist. Shards of broken ceramic came crashing down on the ground, but Fey was far from done. She flew to her next target with equal speed, flying at such a high velocity that she was barely visible to the naked eye. The rest of the class looked at her in awe as she quickly and successfully smashed every single plate before they even had time to start descending.
"Not bad," Aizawa said. "Stay where you are..."
Fey complied, her wings flapping behind her with imperceivable speed. They moved so fast that they produced a sort of buzzing sound, similar to that of a hummingbird. In fact, the way she moved in the air, as well as her general appearance, made her very reminiscent of a hummingbird.
"That was just a warm up," the teacher explained. "Now, the real test begins..."
Again, without warning, he started flinging plates into the air. This time, though, with a lot more speed and precision. He also made sure to throw them far away from each other so that she would have to travel a lot more distance before reaching her targets. Fey tried her best to keep up with the attacks, moving at incredible speeds to reach every disk thrown at her. Her speed was quite impressive, but so was her maneuverability. At a dime, she could completely change directions without even having to correct her course. It was like gravity had absolutely no effect on her.
After a few rounds, Aizawa ceased to throw any more plates at her, and when the dust had finally settled, Fey noticed that she had missed quite a few targets.
"Alright you can come down now," Aizawa ordered.
Fey lowered herself to the ground, slightly out of breath. She could already feel the drawbacks of her quirk manifesting. Before doing anything else, she raised her hand up to speak. Aizawa sighed.
"Yes?" he asked tiredly.
"Can I drink from my bottle before we continue, sir?" she asked politely.
He stopped for a moment, looking intensely at her, like he was trying to read her intentions. His eyes made Fey uneasy, but she waited for him to respond before moving. After a few seconds, he waved her away and moved towards the next area. The rest of the class followed him, but their eyes lingered on Fey as they did.
All of them had witnessed what Fey was capable of. Even Iida, who had been reluctant to look at her all this time, had to admit that she was truly impressive. He only hoped that she was not as fast as him...
The group convened around the racing track. Most of them remembered when they had to race each other during their first days at the academy. Fey joined them soon after taking a few gulps of her water bottle.
"Your next test is simple," Aizawa began. "I'll be timing to see how fast you're going."
An even easier test. Fey seemed very confident she would ace this test without a hitch. She even thought to herself that she would probably blow everyone out of the water with her speed. She approached the track confidently, a slight smile hanging from her lips.
"But..." the teacher continued. "You'll have some competition... Iida. Step up please."
All eyes turned towards Iida, who seemed shocked and surprised he was being singled out. Nonetheless, he stepped towards the teacher, bowing respectfully as he approached him.
"You'll be racing the new girl," he declared. "Don't hold back on her. This is as much your test as it is hers..."
He held up his chromometer and waited for the pair to take their places. Fey's confidence seemed to wane as their eyes crossed. They stared at each other for a brief moment, then both of them turned away blushing. They both stood at one end of the track, ready to start the race whenever the teacher would give the signal.
Fey glanced up at Iida for a short moment. His eyes were fixed on the track with such drive. As she waited for the whistle to blow, she noticed the engines on Iida's calves. She could not believe how she could have missed them until now and it hit her why the teacher had picked him for her to race. This guy was built for speed. Despite his muscular body, it was clear that he could easily beat her in this race if she was not careful. With this in mind, she figured that she was not going to hold back and give it all that she had to win this.
As soon as Aizawa blew his whistle, the two of them bolted forward with unfathomable velocity. Propelled by his engines, Tenya ran with incredible speed. He might have been the fastest in his class before, but now he had serious competition. Despite her not having engines strapped to her body, Fey had an incredible flight speed and she flew right next to him. Evenly matched, they both glanced over at each other. They both were so used to others not being able to keep up with them that they both found it strange to be moving so fast one next to the other. But one of them had to be the winner and none of them were willing to let the other one win.
Tenya tried pushing himself harder to move faster. He did not want to overheat his engines though, so he did push too hard. Fey, on the other hand, did not want to deplete her reserves all in one go so she too stayed conservative with her efforts. But at some point, Tenya started gaining a bit of distance on her and she could not help but push herself a little harder. She gained a few inches on him, taking the lead by only a little distance. This made Iida scowl angrily, but his disappointment was short lived, because Fey started losing distance mere seconds later. Annoyed, Fey tried to keep up the pace, but was unable to go faster without seriously straining herself. The finish line was so close, though. If she could maintain her current speed, maybe she would have a chance to win this...
The pair traversed the finish line almost simultaneously, dragging an enormous gust of wind with them. Their high speeds had created a vacuum that blew an enormous amount of air behind them. Once they stopped, they were almost toppled over by the squall. Fey stumbled forward a bit, her legs feeling a bit weak despite her not having used them in the race. She could only imagine how Iida's legs were feeling... When she turned towards him to see how he was doing, she realized that, unlike her, he seemed completely fine. He completely avoided her gaze this time, going back to avoid her entirely once again. The young girl sighed, turning towards the teacher to see his reaction.
"Who won?" she asked. They had come in so fast that she could not see who had crossed the finish line first.
Aizawa pulled up a screen to show the replay to the entire class. At the very end, they could see that Tenya had managed to cross the finish line a mere half-second earlier than she did.
"That was incredibly close," the teacher said. "I wasn't expecting it to be that close, but good job you two."
Fey looked at the ground in disbelief. She could have sworn that she had come in first, or at the very least at the same time as he did. She had never been beaten in a race before by anyone. She looked over towards Iida, who still was not looking back at her. He went to follow the rest of his classmates towards the next training area, but stopped after a few steps. He remained motionless for a moment, then turned back towards Fey. He walked up to her, his eyes looking straight at the ground as to avoid making eye contact with her, then stopped again to bow stiffly in front of her. He then quickly turned away once more to rejoin his classmates, leaving Fey perplexed where she stood as she wondered what the hell had just happened.
