Fey had gotten up bright and early the next day so that she could prepare herself for her first day of training. She had asked another classmate for some training, that person being Sato. He shared the same kind of drawback as her for his quirk and seeing how strong he was during school training, she figured she could learn some valuable skills from him. But she was mostly looking forward to her training with Tenya. Probably because they both had speed based quirks and that she thought they could challenge each other. Plus, she hoped he could help her get better at running without the use of her quirk in case she couldn't use it during the festival.
After packing herself some food and snacks and a large water bottle, she bid her family farewell and took the bus to the park where Tenya had said to meet with him. It was supposedly in the middle from where the both of them lived but Fey couldn't be sure of that, since she didn't exactly know where Iida lived. She doubted she would ever need to though so she didn't press the issue to him. Once the bus dropped her off in front of the park, she could see Tenya up ahead wearing a white tank and a pair of very tight black shorts. His outfit, while suited for training, showed off a lot of his body which made Fey blush slightly when she saw him. She knew he was fit but... Damn. He was really fine...
"Fey!" Tenya greeted her from a distance, jogging towards her to meet her.
"H-Hey Tenya!" Fey stuttered, trying to hide the color that was rising to her cheeks.
"You seem as ready as I am to begin training," he said, motioning to her own outfit.
Fey placed down her bag at the foot of the large tree they were standing next to. She was wearing a pair of leggings and a rainbow-striped tank top that left most of her back uncovered so that it didn't hinder her wings. Most of her clothes were either open-back or had had modifications done to them to accommodate her wings. She didn't have the money to go out and buy clothes tailor-made for people with quirks like hers, so most of her modifications were done by hand. Fortunately, with this top, she didn't have to cut into it.
"You bet!" she replied excitedly. "I'm ready to give it my all to be ready for the festival!"
"Haha! Glad to hear it!" Tenya mused. "But first, before we get into the thick of things, we should engage in a few stretching exercises to warm up properly."
Fey nodded. He seemed to know a lot more about exercising and working out than she did, so she trusted him to know what was best for them during their training. Besides, she had never trained on her own, let alone with a friend, so she would be relying on him to help her out during their time together.
"Warming up and stretching are very important steps to one's training, Tenya began explaining as he began stretching out his legs.
He started by grabbing ahold of his right foot, bringing it in all the way up to his butt as to stretch out his thigh. Fey imitated him, doing the same with her right leg.
"It helps with blood circulation and warms up the different ligaments and tendons so that they're all nice and flexible once we formally begin our exercises," he continued on, switching to his left leg now as he examined Fey's form as she emulated his movements.
As she went to switch to her left leg as well, she felt herself fall to one side, but regained her footing with the help of her wings. They were a great asset to have whenever she would lose her balance and Tenya found it impressive how she would effortlessly use them as though they were an extension of her. Which they were, of course, but he couldn't possibly know how it felt to have them since he was completely wingless himself.
"You seem to know a lot about exercise, Tenya," Fey laughed. "Then again, you seem to know a lot about everything."
Tenya blushed at her comment. "There are many things I still know nothing about, many things I must learn if I am to become the perfect hero..."
Fey wondered what he could possibly need to learn that he didn't know already. She had always been in awe at how intelligent and diligent he was as a student. He would constantly be in the top percent of their class, only bested by Yaoyorozu in the written tests. Then again, he wasn't the best when it came to interpersonal relationships. In fact, Fey realized that she was probably a lot more proficient on that front, but she would never tell it to his face.
"That's why we're in school," she answered him. "To learn and better ourselves."
She smiled, continuing to imitate his movements as he stretched the other parts of his body. Despite him being quite a muscular guy, Tenya was also surprisingly limber. Of course, Fey was also very flexible, since her job demanded that from her and she flaunted her skills by sitting with her legs laid flat in front of her and grabbing hold of her feet, her forehead touching the tops of her knees as she did. Tenya stared at her in awe. He could only manage to touch the tips of his toes, which many people couldn't manage to do, but it still paled in comparison to Fey's flexibility.
"You have quite the impressive body, Fey," he said, immediately realizing how it sounded after the fact and blushing immediately. "I mean that you are extremely flexible! It's surprising how flexible you are."
Fey lifted her head towards Iida, keeping her position while she smirked at him.
"I feel like you forget what I do for a living, Tenya," she snickered.
Tenya's face grew even redder, as he lowered his head to try and reach further to grab his toes with the tips of his fingers. He seemed to be struggling, though, which made Fey smile triumphantly.
"But, if you must know," she paused dramatically. "I also took dance lessons when I was younger."
Iida looked back at her with astonishment. "I... suppose that makes sense," he pondered. "Yes... In fact, it makes perfect sense!"
Fey straightened up and stretched her arms up over her head. "Really? I'm curious to know what makes you say that."
"Well, there is the matter of your flexibility," It was Iida's turn to imitate her now. "Which could only come from doing gymnastics or dance. In your case, it would make more sense that you had prior dance experience before you... came to Japan."
He meant that she had probably already had dance experience before she was hired at the strip club, but somehow couldn't say it out loud. He knew that somewhere inside him, it bothered him that she had to go down the path that she did for her family's sake.
"I suppose that makes sense," Fey acknowledged as she got up from the floor.
She did a few jogging steps to test if she was warmed up sufficiently for the next part in their day training. As she did, she could already feel herself tiring because of her accelerated metabolism and she reached into her backpack to get a small granola bar out to munch on.
"Hey Tenya," she started to ask. "How do you conserve energy when using your quirk?"
Tenya got up as well and lifted his thumb and index finger to his jaw in a thoughtful manner.
"I've never really thought about it before," he confessed. "I suppose I've just gotten a better feel for my quirk's limits throughout the years."
"Oh, I see," Fey answered. "So no super secret technique on how to preserve energy in combat?"
She chuckled lightly, finishing her granola bar before tossing the wrapping in the trash. Tenya laughed at her last comment.
"No, why do you ask?" He looked at her inquisitively.
Fey's eyes lowered. "Well, I'm trying to figure out how to properly manage my energy levels when I'm using my quirk. As of now, I've only been able to use it in quick bursts before crashing. But if I want to be able to perform during the festival, I'll have to find a way to make my quirk last longer before I have to recharge."
Iida understood what she was saying. If she crashed too quickly during the festival, it could cost her spot and Tenya wanted to avoid that as much as possible if he could help it. The last thing he wanted was for any of his classmates to be booted off the hero course, but he also understood that they were also going to have to face each other to secure their own spots in the class.
"Maybe you're going about it the wrong way," Tenya said. "Maybe the problem isn't with how much energy you use, but more about the amount of energy that you have in the first place."
"What do you mean?" she asked, intrigued.
"Think of your energy as some sort of gauge. Instead of trying to manage how much you're taking from that gauge at a time, maybe you should focus on increasing the size of the gauge instead?"
"So... train myself to have more stamina you mean?"
"Exactly!"
She had never thought about it that way, but what he said made sense. If she focused on making herself more enduring, she would probably be able to go for longer without having to recharge.
"Alright, let's do that then!" she declared excitedly, taking her fist to the palm of her other hand. "I want you to push me to surpass my limits, Tenya, and in return, I'll do the same with you."
A spark of competitiveness crossed Tenya's eyes as he walked over to her. He stretched out his hand. "You've got yourself a deal. Hopefully you'll manage to keep up..."
Fey grinned, grabbing his hand and shaking it firmly. "You're on."
With that, they started their training in earnest. First, they ran a few laps around the park. Tenya was obviously the better running of the two, but that didn't stop Fey from trying her best to keep up with him. After a while though, Tenya started cheering her to keep up the pace and push her to go even faster. His encouragement gave her the boost she needed to surpass herself. Tenya couldn't help but be proud of her. Next, it was Fey's turn to school Tenya. He had the ability to propel himself into the air with his engines, but lacked the ability to control how his body reacted in the air. Even though he couldn't stay in the air for very long, Fey gave him a few pointers on how to control the direction he was going, and how to stabilize his body one he was in the air. She taught him to really engage his core so that his limbs wouldn't fly off in every direction and to always plan how he would land before lift off. To practice his lift, she would challenge him to give her a high five in the air, going higher every time he would soar through the air.
"Come on Tenya!" she yelled at him from the sky. "Just a bit more this time! You're almost there!"
Tenya could feel his engine on the brink of stalling, but he couldn't just give up now, not while he was so close to reaching the highest he had ever jumped. Plus, Fey was being so encouraging, he couldn't just let her down. So, after bracing himself for another lift off, he blasted into the air, barely making it to Fey's hand. His fingers grazed her before he started falling towards the ground. He hadn't realized how high he had jumped until his engines gave out mid-flight and he couldn't catch himself. He looked around, trying to find something to slow down his fall, but he was completely in the open. Fey quickly understood that Tenya's engine had stalled and she immediately flew in to try and slow him down before he came crashing to the floor.
"Hold on Tenya!" she called at him, arriving next to him to grab his hand.
She grabbed it with both her hands, then flew straight up to tried and slow his momentum. She was then met with the crushing weight of his body, which made her falter for just a moment, but with great effort, she managed to hold on and slow him down just enough that he could fall without injuring himself. She came crashing down on the ground as well as they both fell flatly onto their backs next to each other. Fey groaned painfully, shuffling to get her wings unstuck from under her. After recovering from his fall, Tenya quickly sat up to examine Fey.
"Are you okay, Fey?" he asked in a concerned voice. "I'm so sorry! My engines abandoned me as I was coming down and I-...!"
"I'm fine, Tenya," she answered painfully. "I'm just glad you're not hurt... I thought I was going to drop you."
She stayed on the ground, catching her breath. Her arms hurt a bit from trying to pull Tenya up midair. Seeing as she didn't seem to hurt, Tenya did the same and lied back down in the dirt.
"I am relieved," he sighed. "And I am grateful that you risked yourself for me... but please, I wouldn't wish for it to become a habit."
"If I hadn't stepped in, you would have gotten really hurt, Tenya. Trust me, I speak from experience... I didn't want you to get hurt before the festival. Just... let's not do this again, alright?"
Tenya nodded, turning his head towards Fey. She was lying next to him, staring straight up at the sky. She seemed at peace now, more so than he had ever seen before. She smiled at the clouds up above, then laughed, pointing at one of them.
"That one looks like you," she said to him.
"Where?" Tenya tried to look for the cloud that she was speaking of.
"That one there... See how it kind of looks like your suit's helmet? With the eyes and the two pointy bits?"
Tenya found the one she was pointing at and had to admit, it resembled the helmet from his hero costume.
"You have a good eye," he complimented, chuckling a bit.
"And that one looks like a bunny."
They both laughed as they pointed out shapes in the clouds together. After a few moments, though, they just laid in the grass side by side, watching the clouds go by without speaking a word. Ultimately though, it was Fey who ended up breaking the silence.
"Tenya?" she asked as she turned her head.
"Yes, Fey?" he replied as he did the same.
"Do you think I have what it takes to be a hero?"
He looked at her with a surprised look on his face. Her eyes lowered as she waited for his answer. He didn't know what had prompted such a question, nor was he expecting her to ask something like this to him. He pondered for a few seconds, then looked back at her with his earnest blue eyes.
"I do think you are capable of becoming a great hero, Fey," he said, nodding at himself. "I think you're well on your way to becoming a hero your father would be proud of."
Tenya's answer reached directly into her heart. She hadn't expected such a powerful response from him and was having trouble believing in the words he was saying. How could she be a hero if she couldn't even save her own family? She kept repeating his last words in her mind, barely believing them, but she felt bad for him and smiled to thank him.
"You're more of a hero than me, Tenya," she said. "You're noble, and you know exactly what you want and how to get it. I still have a lot of work to do if I want to become the hero I wish I could be..."
Tenya's eyes followed hers. He was still trying to understand why she felt this way suddenly, why she seemed so unsure of herself, but since he couldn't read her mind, he simply reached towards her hand to grab it, looking into her eyes as he did.
"We will work hard together to reach our dreams," he declared fervently, his eyes full of determination. "I will not abandon you to your doubts."
Her eyes stared at him in shock as she felt his hand on hers. She felt her face turning pink as she realized that he was now holding her hand and looking straight into her eyes. He seemed completely sincere in his promise which almost made her tear up. Never had anyone been so honest about wanting to help her. She had always helped others without expecting anything in return. She didn't believe that she needed anything in return and yet, when Tenya said that he wouldn't abandon her, she completely believed him. She squeezed his hand in hers, nodding at his response as she fought back tears.
"This means a lot to me, Tenya... thank you."
They stayed for a moment with their hands holding each other. It just felt right this way, connected by their desire to support one another. Once the sun started to set, they got up and bid each other farewell. Fey hugged him before leaving for her bus, which left Tenya with a strange feeling in his chest. It felt slightly painful but also... warm. He couldn't tell exactly what it was he was feeling, but what he could be certain of was the fact that he wished they had had more time together, and that he would be counting the hours until their next meeting.
