During the days leading up to the Sports Festival, Fey alternated between her training with Tenya and her training with Rikido Sato, attending work at night as best she could. The day before the festival, she spent resting up for the big day. Now that the festival had finally come, she could really feel the stress. She hadn't been that stressed out before now, being too busy focusing on her training and on improving herself. Plus, work kept her busy when she wasn't working out, so she hadn't really had time to worry about the festival until now.
Inside the U.A. stadium, tensions were high in class 1-A's waiting room. Everyone knew that today, they would have to inevitably compete against one another. Fey stood in her corner, frantically revising everything she had learned up to this point. She was nervously pulling at the feathers around her wrists while she paced back and forth. She was wearing her sports uniform, just like the rest of her class. She hoped it wouldn't be too cumbersome once she would be on stage fighting. The thought of having so many people watching her made her even more anxious. This would be the first time she would be on TV and that her mother and sisters would be watching her at home. They hadn't seen what she could do since she had started attending U.A… She hoped that she wouldn't let them down.
Fey was suddenly pulled from her daydreaming by a hand touching her on the shoulder. She jumped, spinning around to see who it was. Looking back at her was Tenya, smiling serenely at her.
"Nervous?" he asked.
Fey sighed. "Yeah…" she confessed to him. "I've never done anything like this before."
"This is all new for me as well, and I must admit that I too am a bit nervous."
"Really?" she said in a surprised tone. "But… you look so calm right now."
Tenya laughed. "I guess I'm just good at hiding it. Anyways, I wanted to wish you good luck at the festival."
She smiled at him gratefully. "Thanks, Tenya. Good luck to you as well."
"Oh I won't be needing any luck…" he said as he pushed his glasses higher up his nose bridge.
Fey recognized his look of confidence as he stared at her with a smirk hanging on his lips. She laughed smugly, crossing her arms across her chest.
"Oh really?" she said sarcastically. "Are you that confident that you can beat me, Tenya?"
"Need I remind you that you have yet to beat me?" she boasted.
"I think you're forgetting the Battle Trial, Tenya… Remember how I wiped the floor with you then, or have you just conveniently forgotten that you were completely outsmarted back then?"
Tenya's face contorted into an embarrassed expression. "Th-That was different…"
"Regardless, Tenya," she continued. "I have gotten a lot stronger since our first meeting. You're going to have to watch your back if you want to win this competition."
"We'll see then, won't we?"
She grasped his hand firmly, their eyes full of determination locking in on each other.
"Don't hold back," she said.
"You as well," he declared back.
After spending a few more seconds locked in their firm handshake, the stadium staff came to fetch their class and they were off to the main event. Fey could hear the crowd cheering and Present Mic riling them up with his opening speech as they approached. Finally, once they were almost onto the field, she could hear him announcing their class to the crowd.
"Our first group is no stranger to the spotlight! You know them for withstanding a villain attack, give it up for… THE HERO COURSE CLASS 1-A!"
They stepped onto the field and Fey was immediately blinded by all the cameras. She was slowly hovering next to her classmates to show off her quirk, but this made her stand out quite a bit… not that she could avoid it in the first place since she was covered in brightly colored feathers from head to toe. The crowd cheered for them as they walked towards center stage. Once they reached the middle of the stadium, she landed next to Iida, trying as best as she could not to give in to her anxiety. Tenya looked at her for a moment, smiling at her and discreetly giving her a thumbs up to encourage her. Fey smiled back at him. His collected composure gave her a bit of confidence.
Present Mic announced the arrival of the other classes one by one until all of the contestants were standing in the middle of the stadium. Once introductions had been made, the stadium umpire came into view. This year, pro-hero Midnight would be the one refereeing the competition. Fey laughed as the boys in her class commented on her risque outfit, with Mineta being the most "enthused" about it. Fey sighed, trying to keep her focus on the task ahead.
"And now for the opening speech!" Midnight announced, as she pointed her tassel at their class. "And as our student pledge this year we have… KATSUKI BAKUGOU!"
The whole class watched in horror as Bakugou took to the stage. Fey was mentally preparing herself for the cringe that was going to be pouring out from his stupid mouth and, sure enough, he said:
"Just so you know… I'm gonna win."
The crowd and the other classes erupted into a booing frenzy, as everyone in class 1-A collectively cringed at his blatant arrogance.
"Why would you be so disrespectful?!" Tenya asked, his hands chopping furiously at the air. "You're representing us all!"
"It's not my fault you guys are all just stepping stones to my victory," Bakugou replied, putting a thumbs down towards him.
Fey tried to contain her laughter at seeing Tenya so animated. She tugged at his arm, motionning him that it wasn't worth the hassle to continue scolding him. The best way they could humble him was to win the festival.
"Without further ado," Midnight proceeded. "It's time for us to get started!" She paused. "This is where you begin feeling the pain!... The first fateful game of the festival!"
She pointed to the large screen that had appeared behind her. A large rectangular roulette was spinning as she pointed to it with her tassel. After a brief moment, the roulette ceased its spinning, revealing the first trial: a relay race.
"All 11 classes will be competing separately in this first task," Midnight explained. "Each class will be divided into teams of 5. Each team will be competing against each other to reach the finish line as quickly as possible. The quicker your team finishes the race, the more points you'll get once you've crossed the finish line!"
The track was going to be 4 kilometers long around the stadium. Each team had been determined at random and class 1-A was going to be the first to compete. Each team could decide who would be stationed at which checkpoint along the track, allowing for different strategies to be used. All quirks were allowed during the race and contestants were allowed to use them against opposing students, as long as they remained on the track and didn't stray too far from it. This meant that Fey, or anyone for that matter, wasn't allowed to fly higher than a few meters over the track and had to stay aligned with the track at all times.
Fey's team consisted of Asui, Midoriya, Sero and Ojiro, which meant that Tenya was going to be one of her competitors for this task. She shot him a look that meant "I'm coming for you" before moving towards her strategized for a bit, deciding that it would be best if Fey was at the last checkpoint, since she was the fastest, and could cover lost ground if her teammates somehow fell behind.
Once each team had formed their strategy, they all got into position at their respective checkpoints, with the first runners starting off at the starting line. Fey made her way towards the very last checkpoint, arriving first thanks to her quirk. She had drank plenty of water and had had a very sugary meal before the festival, so she knew she had plenty of stamina to go around. Plus, she had managed to go for longer using her quirk during her training with Iida and Sato before she had to restock on sugar.
Todoroki was the second person to arrive at the last checkpoint, which got Fey worried. He had an incredible hold on his quirk and had proven to be one of the best in their class. Fey knew she couldn't underestimate him, even though he couldn't fly and didn't have as much speed as her. He gave her a slight nod as he approached and she nodded back at him. A few seconds later, Bakugou made his own appearance, sneering at the pair as he took place at the last checkpoint as well. Not too far behind though, was Tenya, who smiled smugly as he noticed Fey in the distance.
"Well well well… Looks like we'll be competing against each other sooner than I thought," she said as she met with him.
"It would appear so," Tenya replied.
"Hope you've brought your A-game, because I'm going to wipe the floor with you, Tenya."
"Not if I wipe the floor with both of you first," Bakugou growled.
The air was tense between the four of them. Even though Bakugou had declared war on most of his classmates, hell, most of the school even, he still hadn't forgotten their little spat in the hallway. Fey looked at him unimpressed, crossing her arms over her chest.
"I'd like to see you try," she challenged him.
Bakugou seethed as he waited for the race to start. Fey knew that she had immense competition here at the last checkpoint, but she couldn't lose face now. Her team was depending on her to finish the race first and she wasn't planning on letting them down. Plus, she had to prove herself against Tenya. This was her chance at showing him that she had improved since their first race together.
Fey's team started out with Sero. Once the signal had been given, he shot his tapes at a tree and propelled himself forward with great speed. A strong start for their team. Once he got to the first checkpoint, he passed the baton to Midoriya. He was probably the slowest of them all, but still tried his best to run as fast as he could without having to use his quirk, since it would probably cost him his legs. Then it was Ojiro's turn to run once Izuku reached the second checkpoint. Despite his size, Ojiro was a lot faster than people gave him credit for, using his tail to propel him forward or hinder opponents on the tracks next to him. He managed to knock down one of his opponents just before they could reach the third checkpoint, where Asui was waiting. He passed the baton off to her and watched as she hopped away with it in her mouth.
At the last checkpoint, Fey hadn't seen anyone approach yet. She could sense that people were coming, though, and she flew up to see who it was. Unfortunately, her team wasn't in the lead and it was Todoroki who got his baton first. Fey was getting anxious waiting for Asui. That's when she saw her appear at a distance. She started cheering for her, but Tenya's teammate was coming up in front of her. She knew that if Tenya was handed his baton before her, it would be almost impossible for her to catch up to him. She yelled for Asui to continue running, hoping that her encouragement would bolster her somehow. But it was futile. Despite not being the fastest runner, Tokoyami was using his dark shadow to propel him forward and carry the baton. His shadow was going to reach Iida before Asui could reach her, or so she thought. As Tokoyami's shadow was about to hand over the baton to Iida, Asui wrapped her tongue around hers and flung it towards Fey. Fey caught the baton just as Tokoyami's shadow was handing his off to Tenya.
The pair locked eyes for a split second as they both received their batons. They braced for departure and bolted towards the track. Fey was flying over the track. Tenya was right beside her, running at full speed towards the finish line. Todoroki may have had a running start, but the pair quickly caught up to him in no time. He tried to halt their advance by launching an ice attack against them, but Fey simply flew right over it while Tenya propelled himself with his engines. The two of them landed on the other side of the ice wall unscathed, with Fey having covered more ground than Iida thanks to her quirk. Her victory over him was short lived though, as Tenya's engines burned even brighter to meet with her once again. It seemed like it would be a battle just between the two of them, but they were quickly caught up by Todoroki and Bakugou. Somehow, despite being the last one to leave the checkpoint, Katsuki had managed to catch up to his three opponents with relative ease. With his explosions propelling him forward, he flew past Todoroki and went straight for Fey. She had anticipated that he would try and slow her advance once he saw that she was in the lead and braced for impact. Using the force from his blast, she rode the shockwave and sped forward exponentially, spelling Bakugou's defeat and leaving him and Todoroki in the dust. Tenya, seeing her blast off with such amazing speed, tried to follow suit but ultimately could not keep up with her incredible speed.
As she crossed the finish line, Fey was overwhelmed by the roar of the crowd and Present Mic announcing her as the winner. She slowed herself down before landing, looking around at all the people that were cheering for her. In her mind, she thought of her siblings and her mother watching her at home and her eyes filled up with tears. Tenya was the second to arrive, followed by Todoroki and Bakugou. Bakugou cursed at the fact that his team had come in dead last, even though he still made excellent time getting to the finish line. Fey had been the fastest though, which placed her team up in first place.
After taking a few seconds to catch his breath, Tenya marched up towards Fey, who was still completely overwhelmed by the fact that she had won. He placed his hand on her shoulder, prompting her to turn around. She started to cry tears of joy as she saw him, jumping into his arms.
"I did it, Tenya!… I won the race!" She said through tears.
"You were brilliant!" he said to her as he lifted her up from the ground.
"You were amazing as well," she replied, pulling away from him.
Their teammates came to congratulate them as they had scored very high in the race. Fey hugged her teammates, thanking them for their hard work. Once the celebrations were done, they returned to the stage, where Miss Midnight would announce their next trial…
