After some much needed rest and sustenance, Fey was right as rain again and ready to continue on with the festival. She could feel how her hard training had paid off. Now, she was able to use her quirk for a lot longer and with a lot more intensity than she ever could before. This made her excited for the future and at how she could improve herself even more, but for now, she needed to focus on the competition ahead. The Sports Festival was not even close to finishing and she would have to face her classmates if she wanted to win.
The next and final part of the festival was dedicated to the tournament bracket, where each remaining contestant would have to fight their way through the ladder to win first prize. Each student would be fighting in a one on one combat against their opponent for the top spot. Students would be eliminated if they were incapacitated or thrown out of bounds by their opponent. Since this year U.A. had a flying quirk student, they limited the arena to a maximum of 6 meters high. If Fey flew higher than that, she would immediately be disqualified. This was to prevent her from having too much of an advantage compared to her peers which she understood. Besides, even with such restrictions, Fey was confident she would be able to win against her opponents.
Each matchup had been randomly generated using the remaining number of contestants from the second trial. Strangely enough, some of the winners from the red team had decided to forfeit the competition, stating that they barely remembered anything that had happened during the previous challenge and that they had barely done anything noteworthy. This prompted a lot of questions from everyone, and with the newly opened positions, the festival organizers filled them with those who had moved on to the second trial and had scored the highest in the first trial. This meant that Ochaco, Tokoyami, Midoriya and a few others had passed into the third trial.
Once that was settled, the bracket was then announced. Fey had been extremely nervous about who she was going to be up against, and sure enough, her first opponent was going to be Sero. The young man had already won against her in the second trial, so it wasn't going to be easy for her to win against him. Fey analyzed the rest of the bracket and realized that she could be facing Tenya in the final stages of the competition. This made her want to fight even harder so she could fight him head on for the position of first place, if they both managed to get that far.
Her heart sank when she realized that, in the first round of combats, Uraraka would be facing off against Bakugou. She also realized that if she lost, she would be the one to face off against him afterwards. She turned towards her friend who, judging by the expression on her face, had also come to the realization that she would be facing Bakugou. She approached her in the hopes of encouraging her, but Ochaco seemed too focused on her task at hand to even notice her. She left her with her own thoughts and tried to focus on her own trials up ahead. Sero wasn't going to go easy on her, as he had demonstrated in the second phase of the festival, so she was going to have to outwit him if she wanted to have any sort of chance to win against him.
She wasn't the first one to fight though, so she joined her classmates up in the bleachers to watch the first round of combats unfold. When she arrived in her class' box, she noticed Izuku, Tenya and Ochaco down by the front row. The three of them waved at her as she came into view.
"We saved you a seat!" Tenya exclaimed, motioning to the seat in between him and Uraraka.
"Thanks guys!" she thanked them as she took her seat. "You seem a lot more relaxed now, Ochaco."
"Haha relaxed… yeaaah," she stammered, making Fey regret her words.
"You're going to be up against Hanta, isn't that right, Fey?" Midoriya asked in a curious tone. "It's going to be a tough battle for you against him and his quirk."
"Yeah I'm… trying not to think about it actually," Fey confessed anxiously. "But… I may have an idea how I'm going to beat him."
"Really? How are you going to do it?" Midoriya seemed really interested in her strategy.
"I'm not gonna tell you," Fey teased as she stuck out her tongue. "It would ruin the surprise."
Deku frowned slightly, but was ultimately still pumped that she had a plan to defeat Sero. Tenya smiled at her enthusiasm. Seeing her so pumped up for the trials ahead only served to boost his own confidence. He hoped they would get to face off during the finals and see who would come out on top.
The first students to face off against each other were Ashido and Aoyama. Fey and Ochaco cheered her on from the sideline as Mina annihilated her opponent with her acid. Then came Kaminari's turn to fight a member of class 1-B. She had long vine-like hair that she could control. She proved to be a much bigger challenge than Denki had anticipated and he lost against her. Then it was Tokoyami and Yaoyorozu's turn to fight, which ended almost as soon as it started, much to Momo's chagrin. Tokoyami stayed humble, despite his crushing victory over her, and bowed respectfully at the end of their encounter. After a few more fights, Fey and Sero were called to the waiting areas since it would soon be their turn to face each other.
As she waited alone in the first waiting room, Fey could feel her heart palpitating inside her chest. During the first two trials, she had had a team backing her up the whole time, but now, she was going to be all alone against her opponent. If she made a mistake, it could cost her the whole competition. The fact that her family was watching at home only made her even more anxious. What if she disappointed them? She couldn't just lose right now, not when she would finally be able to stand on her own. She needed to win, if not for her own sake, than for her little sisters at home. She wanted them to look at her and proudly tell every kid at school how amazing their big sister was. With them in mind, she steeled her resolve and approached the stadium entrance once they had called her name.
She stepped onto the field calmly, staring at her opponent from across the court. Sero stared back with his ever-present smile hanging from his lips. He seemed very confident in himself and with reason. He had managed to capture her in the previous trial and now, they were on an empty field with no obstacles to prevent him from hitting her with his tapes. Any mistake she would make could instantly spell out her defeat, so she needed to act with precision and cunning if she wanted to win this battle.
The two of them stood at a reasonable distance from each other. They both stared intensely at each other, twitching for the fight to begin. They both waited patiently for Midnight and Present Mic to present them to the crowd, re-explaining how the battle would be unfolding. Once the introductions were made, the whistle was blown and both students sprung to life, ready to fight each other with everything they had.
Sero opened up with a double tape attack aimed directly at Fey. Fey wanted at the last second to move, disappearing momentarily before appearing next to Hanta. The dark-haired boy jumped away swiftly, sending more tape flying her way. The white tape whooshed past her narrowly, only brushing up against her cheek slightly. The attack came way too close to hitting her for Fey's liking and she quickly created distance between her and Sero. She was already making mistakes and the fight had only just begun.
Tenya, Ochaco and Midoriya were all looking intently at their fight, cringing everytime Fey was close to getting caught by Sero's tapes. Everytime she would go in for an attack, Sero would be right there ready to intercept. It was an intense matchup, since every one of Fey's movements had to be calculated. They weren't so sure how she was going to pull it off, but held out hope that whatever she had planned was going to save her from failing.
As Fey was dodging all of Sero's attacks, she began to understand how he moved. This was part of her plan, as she needed to find out where she would find her opening for her to be able to execute her plan. Iida quickly surmised that she was analyzing his fighting style, since she was staying on the defensive for now. He had to admit that her sharp reflexes were quite impressive. She had gotten a lot stronger since they had first faced each other in the physical exams. He also knew how much this meant to Fey. She had three little sisters cheering for her at home and she wanted to make them proud. He remembered how he would cheer his brother on when he was a child, how he still cheered him on when he saw him on television. He could only have admiration for such dedication on her part, wanting to become a good role model for her younger siblings as well as achieving her own dreams of becoming a hero that her father would be proud of.
After exchanging a few blows, Fey finally intercepted one of Sero's tapes, catching it in her hand. This shocked everyone, including Sero, since she had been fighting so defensively up until now. A smirk stretched across Fey's lips as she flew straight towards her opponent, slipping through his defenses and reappearing behind him. Sero spun around to shoot her with more tape that she was only too happy to intercept again, repeating the same fly-by technique that she had previously done. Sero continued to shower her in tape, not noticing how she was slowly wrapping him in his own tape. In a matter of seconds, the poor boy was completely mummified in his own tape thanks to Fey's speed and cunning wit. She landed next to him as he toppled to the ground, unable to move.
"Sero is unable to move!" Midnight shouted loudly. "Fey Salvador is the winner!"
Fey lifted her fist to the sky, cheering with the crowd. She glanced over at her class' box where her friends were enthusiastically cheering her victory. She smiled wide at them, then helped Sero get out of his tape prison to help him up.
"Wow Fey," he said as he grabbed her hand to get up. "You really outsmarted me there."
"Ehh no hard feelings, right?" she laughed nervously. "You did really good yourself."
"Yeah but you were better."
He shook her hand vigorously with a wide grin on his face. Once they parted ways, Fey made her way towards the bleachers, but as she was walking through the inside of the stadium, she came across Ochaco making her way towards the waiting rooms.
"Ochaco!"
Fey ran up to her and stopped her in her tracks.
"This isn't going to be an easy fight for you," she said to her as she grabbed her by both arms. "But I believe in you. Please remember that… We're all cheering for you from the sidelines."
She smiled at her, trying her hardest to cheer her up. If Ochaco won against Bakugou this round, she would be fighting her during the next turn. Ochaco seemed disheartened at first, but Fey's smile seemed to cheer her up a bit and give her courage.
"Thanks Fey," she said gratefully. "But you better watch yourself, 'cause I'll be coming for you next!"
They both laughed before hugging each other tightly.
"I'll be counting on that," Fey declared as they separated.
As Fey made her way back to her seat, Uraraka stepped onto the battlefield. Bakugou approached from the other side with his hands in his pockets. Fey was cheering her friend on with every fiber of her body. Not only did she desperately want her friend to succeed, but she also wanted Bakugou to lose… badly. Up until now, he had managed to win despite losing to her and Tenya. She hoped this time, he would be permanently eliminated from the competition and served a hefty piece of humble pie. Unfortunately, no such thing happened, as he resisted Ochaco's most powerful attack. She collapsed seconds later, having taken too many hits from Bakugou's explosions during their fight.
Fey was equal parts angry and scared by what had just unfolded. Not only did Bakugou not get the beating he had deserved, but he had also passed through to the next phase, where he would be facing off against her. After Ochaco had been taken away to the infirmary, he turned towards where Fey was sitting and glared at her, before grinning sadistically. His sadistic smile made her skin crawl as he exited the stage. Tenya and Izuku turned their attention towards her, fully knowing what had just happened. Bakugou had declared war on Fey in his own way, meaning that he wouldn't be holding back against her when they would inevitably face off in the next phase of the festival.
