It was finally the day that Taiza started learning martial arts. He was especially excited about learning the Longhuo clan Swordsmanship from his mother.

...

Reborn as a privileged high-ranking noble, he had to wait and first study things like Noble- and Royal Court Etiquette. The way one behaved reflected one's clan and was crucial to maintaining one's honor as a noble in the Fire Nation.

For example, the way one addressed a noble differed depending on his, or her, position of power. Unlike in the Northern Water Tribe, the Fire Nation didn't have any gender discrimination. Even with titles, although they were 'officially' titled in the masculine form. If one was a woman, only the way one was addressed was different.

Take Taiza's mother. She was officially titled 'Lord' but always addressed as 'Lady'. And because of her status as the 'matriarch' of the Longhuo clan, a former warlord clan, she was to be addressed as 'Lady Longhuo'.

And as Taiza was born a firebender, his first lesson would be on Firebending.

...

"Remember, Taiza, the original Firebending Masters were the dragons. Like the Sun Warriors, we too follow their teachings," his mother explained as she demonstrated a strong stance. "Fire is a force of nature and its path unpredictable if you don't guide it with a strong will."

"You mean like aura?" Taiza imitated her stance a few feet away from her.

"Exactly. From what you've described of spiritual energy, it might be even more difficult to control fire. Now, bending itself is gathering chi, letting it flow through your body, and the execution of your own will. Like dragons, we too will draw our chi from our breath. That's how we regulate the energy throughout our body while firebending. Follow my lead like a mirror."

Taiza mimicked her movements as she executed smooth and wide-stanced movements in a slow pace without firebending.

The opening move of a One Leg Stance transitioned into a Palm Strike, a Drop Stance, followed by two Double Side Punches with each step...

It occurred to him that these movements were very balanced. "I think I get it," he mumbled as he sensed how his inherent fire chi flowed within his body.

... another Drop Stance, a Lunging Fist Strike, a Double Open Palm Strike, and an Open Palm Parry Thrust flowing into a Drop Stance. The Firebending technique ended with mirrored Double Canon Fists.

"Don't forget to take a deep breath everytime you practice these movements."

"What's this Firebending form called, Mother?"

"The Dancing Dragon, of course."

"Dancing?" Taiza raised an eyebrow. "Is all firebending like this?"

"There is even an Airbending technique which is considered very high-level in Firebending since Roku's Era. 'Windmill', I think?"

...

During Roku's Era there was a renegade group of Air Nomads active in the Fire Nation. They were called 'Guiding Wind' and encouraged other nationals to adapt to a spiritual lifestyle similar to the Air Nomads, teaching them compatible bending techniques and various other things.

...

"Hold on! You don't mean when you make fast movements with your feet, would you?" He asked hurriedly.

"Oh? Did you read up on it? As expected of my little phoenix."

Taiza was doomed. To think he was partially about to learn breakdancing. He may be great traditional dancer, but dances like 'street dancing' and 'breakdancing' were definitely his weakness. He had especially bad memories of falling on his butt or breaking his limbs all the time as the movements weren't balanced because he was never able to keep up with its speed of transition.

Suddenly, his gloomy thoughts were accompanied by an emotional outburst of Firebending and the entire backyard burst into white-colored flames.

"Huh?" He blinked twice. "HUH?!"

Taiza was feeling depressed.

His Knowledge Hunger finally stopped bothering him after almost three years, but his Blessing turned out despairingly useless to him.

He had been learning Firebending, and later Swordsmanship, since he turned six. And ever since his firebending fiasco during his first firebending lesson, his mother gifted him their family heirloom to encourage his firebending journey without fear of burning everything around him to the ground... again. The silver cylinder-shaped 'hair ornament of the white phoenix' which he used to decorate his high ponytail.

Until he had to attend the Academy with the age of seven later this year, his mother and Elder Luan taught him almost day and night about himself and his powers. His schedule wasn't that stressful as they monitored his condition constantly with plenty of time to spare for relaxation, like drinking tea with his mother regularly.

They were currently in the backyard which was rebuilt into a beautiful garden with a high bush-maze and an outdoor tea pavillion with a small pond at its center. Turtle ducks (ducks with green carapaces) were happily enjoying their time together, swimming around and occasionally dunking their heads.

"Whatever are you feeling so down for?" His mother asked, sipping on her ginseng tea. "It is the first time that particular Blessing has repeated itself since Gong Jiang the Artisan, which was the very first time the Blessing was bestowed on our clan by the way."

Taiza showed no sign of cheering up at all. "The 'Blessing of Chi Origin' is a very useful Blessing in itself, I admit that. Even the 'Sight of Chi' is useful to 'us'. But not to me."

"And why is that?" She already guessed the answer but figured that her son had to learn to voice these things.

"Because I'm the SPIRIT OF CHI, DAMN IT!" He yelled as he accidentally crushed the wooden table in their backyard garden under his fist, and the table split in half as if lighting just crashed down on it. "My... apologies, Mother." Luckily, no one actually heard his frustration-fueled confession as he previously put up a sound barrier to speak freely.

She waved for the servants on standby, near the entrance of the garden, to clean up the mess as she moved with her son to a nearby bench. "Well, you can do both on your own thanks to your inherent spirit magic." She sighed and picked up a rose from the bush growing next to her. "Elder Luan certainly taught you well enough. Chi and the elements are like paper and colors. Gong Jiang's research states that if you change the way chi flows through a rose, you can even change its color." She gave him an encouraging smile.

He took the red flower and felt its weight and smooth surface between his fingers. At his will, the way he perceived the world changed slightly and he could see pulsing streams of energy flowing through the rose. That moment, he discovered a pattern. Changing its initial shape by taking control of the flowing chi, the red rose turned to a blue one.

...

The Blessing of Chi Origin.

Like the name implied, it was a Blessing that could multiply ones own chi indefinitely but also manipulate the chi in ones surroundings like changing the shape of paper beneath its colors.

...

"I suppose, it is fun to play with," Taiza raised the corner of his mouth.

"How about we visit the Spirit Beasts?" She suggested. "I'm sure practicing Firebending with the Original Masters will cheer you up. It's almost time for your training anyway."

He nodded.

At his mother's call, an elegant azure female dragon landed gracefully in the garden. She helped her son up and mounted her bonded dragon behind him. "We'll be back before sunset," she announced.

The head maid bowed. "We shall prepare for dinner, Lady Longhuo; Young Master."

His mother lightly patted the side of her dragon's head. "Let's go, Grace."

Taiza clung to the dragon's curly-formed horns as it took off into the sky. It was amazing every time they flew on Grace's back. From there, he could clearly make out Dragonfire Island's shape. It was very similar to his clan crest, shaped like a phoenix head.

After he learned the truth about the Dragon Hunts, Taiza wasn't sure what to make of it, but they turned out to be a barbaric practice and initially considered a tremendous blasphemy. Not to mention that Firebending would cease to exist if they were ever eradicated. Even in this world, dragons had to live in hiding to be safe.

...

Shortly after the previous Fire Lord, Sozin, ascended the throne, he started the first Dragon Hunt to gain popularity amongst the nobility. The annoying part was, because no dragon wanted to form a bond with him, he started hunting them for 'glory'.

Traditionally, forming a spiritual bond with a dragon was considered a privilege symbolizing one's status as a Master among Firebending Masters. The more powerful the dragon, the higher one was regarded.

That Dragon Hunt nonsense stopped shortly before Avatar Roku returned from his journey to master the four elements, when Sozin finally formed a spiritual bond with a blue dragon as vicious as himself. Such 'bonds' were only possible because dragons were a race of 'Spirit Beasts'.

Like the Spirit Masters, Spirit Beasts were a type of Incarnated Spirits. But unlike them, those races fully migrated into the mortal world, adapting mortal bodies and giving birth to mortal descendants. Even their bending abilities slowly transferred from their spirit to their mortal bodies over time.

The first Spirit Beasts were the race of the lion turtles, a type of chi spirit, which migrated during the early Era of Raava, enabling humans to build cities on their backs. Next were the elemental Spirit Beasts: the dragons of fire, the sky bison of air, the badgermoles of earth, and the koi fish of water.

In Air Nomad culture, gaining a sky bison companion marked the beginning of airbenders. But in Fire Nation culture, bonding with a dragon was considered the ultimate peak.

Humans considered most of them the Original Bending Masters. The only ones who constantly hid themselves under the deep ice were the koi fish race, so most believed the Original Waterbender to be the moon, which naturally regulated the tides on the planet.

Lastly, as the number of lion turtles diminished, the phoenix birds were born. During the current war, when half of the surviving dragon eggs after the second Dragon Hunt were brought to Dragonfire Island, dragons and phoenix birds mixed, and a hybrid Spirit Beast race was born - the dragon bird. The body of a dragon from the head to its reptilian tail. Wings, legs, beak, and additional feather-tails of a phoenix. A truly majestic creature... a firebending mortal body containing a chi spirit.

...

Landing in a clearing further away from the nests on a small triskellion-shaped volcanic isle, south of Dragonfire Island but within the Great Storm Barrier, his mother carried him down from Grace's neck and held his hand as they began to approach a place where grown dragons relaxed on top of picturesque steep cliffs.

From Taiza's view, they were incredibly gigantic and, from reading their aura, they looked curious themselves as they arched their necks down to take a closer look at him. This was an area he's never been to before as they were usually near the nests where mothers watched over their fire-breathing hatchlings.

Grace led the way and they arrived to the sight of more wilder dragons sparring with each other.

"Look, Taiza. They're teenage dragons," his mother whispered.

A green dragon attacked a purple dragon with his claws. A yellow one defended while a black one ambushed from behind.

"Wow," Taiza was mesmerized by the thrilling scene of what looked like a team match. Green and black vs. purple and yellow. But suddenly, he let go of his mother's hand and ran into the arena.

"TAIZA, NO!" She shouted. Grace roared to alert everyone to the emergency of a 'tiny human' running loose.

Taiza ran with only one small cowering target in his sight further ahead. He slid under the green dragon, reaching for a half-open silver red-markings-covered egg. His movements startled the other teenage dragons as their big bodies almost squashed him and the egg. He was very nimble for a six-year-old as he tried to run on their backs to not have to constantly dodge them under their feet.

But then, the black dragon threw him too high in the air. He embraced the fragile egg to prepare for impact. Luckily, he and the egg were quickly caught by a dark red wing. The color of its plumage reminded him of red wine.

The dragon birds have arrived.

The creature inside the egg peeked between the cracks and watched how its rescuer was embraced by a 'big human'. "Mother, I'm fine. Really." Its world shook for a moment, and the most beautiful eyes met the creature's reptilian gaze. Honey-like amber eyes containing silver pupils and silver bloodvein-patterns running through his irises. "Are you okay?" He asked worried. The creature tried pushing the eggshells away, revealing itself to be a dragon bird hatchling.

["Thank you, Young Primordial."] A deep female voice echoed in his mind. It was the dragon bird who saved them from crashing into the ground. ["I am Vartox. This morning, my egg rolled away and I couldn't find it no matter where I looked. How did you come to know of it?"]

...

Among Spirit Beasts, there existed something similar to a 'language barrier'. They could only understand their own race and communicate with spirits of the same nature. As Taiza was a chi spirit himself, he was able to understand the 'spirit speech' of phoenix birds and dragon birds. 'Normal' spirit speech was spoken only by the inhabitants of the spirit world and the Great Storm Barrier.

Although for humans, 'spirit speech' was only possible within the Great Storm Barrier as it contained a very dense amount of spiritual energy. It worked similar to radio that takes 'sound' and delivers it through the 'spectrum', or in this case, spirit speech takes 'intentional thoughts' and delivers them through the 'spiritual energy' to its intended recipient.

...

Taiza pointed to his eyes and responded calmly. "I saw it."

Vartox lowered her head to take a closer look. ["Ah, yes, the 'Sight of Chi' that is inherited in that human family."]

Taiza held out the egg to Vartox. "Here. She's your child."

Vartox shook her head.

"Huh?"

"Taiza, look!" His mother urged and layed her hands on his shoulder. Although she could only guess what the gigantic dragon bird and her son were talking about, she could understand that something extraordinary was happening before her very eyes.

"Wh- what the..." At the tip of his fingers, where he touched the eggshells, energy streams flowed between him and the egg. Cracks were forming until the eggshells broke and the dragon bird hatchling was free.

["You may give her a name."] Vartox nodded gently.

"Her, huh?" Taiza mumbled. With his Sight, he discovered a pattern on the female hatchling's few silver feathers that reminded him of the red flower of passion. "Rozé."

The little one chirped as her new name was engraved into her spirit.

["What a fitting name. It is a privilege to receive a spirit name from a Primordial. My daughter is now bonded to you."]

"Rozé, huh?" He mumbled as he looked at the cute hatchling. He always thought he would someday bond with a dragon, but something told him that a dragon bird like Rozé truly suited him more... a firebending chi spirit with a mortal body like himself. "You should grow up with your mother, like I do with mine."

Rozé chirped, worried they wouldn't see each other again.

"Don't worry. I sometimes come here to learn Firebending, so we'll be seeing each other often." He gently layed her in her mother's wine-red wing. "Rozé deserves to grow up among her kin. Right now, I am a human before I am a spirit."

Vartox nodded in understanding. ["Very well."]

oOo

A few days later, Taiza sat with Rozé in his lap as he watched his mother do the Dancing Dragon firebending technique with Grace.

"Vartox says it takes a while until you can talk," he said, lightly stroking Rozé's neck with his finger. She snuggled up to his finger and chirped in bliss. "I guess you like this kinda thing, huh." He chuckled as her growing silver plumage lightly tickled his hand.

Elder Luan taught him that the Avatar's companions always followed them when they died as their energies mixed with Raava, the Light Primordial. Taiza hoped the same would happen to Rozé when he had to someday become 'Dagaz the Chi Primordial' permanently.

"We'll be best friends forever, Rozé."

For today, Taiza and his mother switched their bonded Spirit Beast companions. Grace, the azure dragon, carried the boy on her back over the ocean and halted in front of the outskirts of the western barrier.

A moment passed and several creatures rose up from the water, forming a tunnel from the inner barrier connecting to the outer barrier. The creatures of the Great Storm Barrier had the power of forming these tunnels through their will. They were the guardians who protected Dragonfire Island and loyal friends of the islanders.

["You may pass, Young Master."]

After taking a deep breath, Taiza nudged Grace to continue flying. This was Taiza's first time outside the Great Storm Barrier as Elder Luan informed him of someone who lived at the Eastern Air Temple.

Taiza wanted an answer as to why he was given a second chance at life. So the old spirit suggested asking the cosmic energy of the universe. According to Elder Luan, Huoli merely observed Taiza before finalizing his decision about a successor. Unfortunately, that was not the answer he sought.

Personality? Skills? Knowledge? Experience? Anything would have been fine.

...

To protect Grace from being discovered as they flew over the western Fire Navy blockade, Taiza errected a barrier to grant themselves invisibility. Only after they landed in the Eastern Air Temple, he felt safe to remove it.

Taiza clumsily climbed down and walked with Grace through the temple's ruins. He found Guru Pathik meditating. He nudged for Grace to hide and stay back before he stepped closer.

"A great spirit in human form. The new generation seems to be very powerful indeed." Guru Pathik didn't seem to know of him in particular. According to Elder Luan, he was someone who knew of the Spirit Masters' true nature and kept that secret.

"Try guessing who I am, Guru Pathik." He let the energy of his realm flow through his small body, unleashing a powerful wave of untainted chi. His hair largely turned white, fading into black tips, and shining silver in the light. His honey-amber eyes turned into steel-silver orbs reminiscent of sharp blades.

Guru Pathik's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. He coughed to regain his composure. "Ahem. And what, Your Prime- eh- ness, are you hoping to learn from me?"

Taiza pulled back his energy. As expected, he should have practiced his own introduction properly. "My spirit name is Dagaz. How do 'I' pose a question to the cosmic energy of the universe?"

The guru was taken aback. "I'm sorry. Is this a trick question? How I sense it, you're already able to do that."

"Huh? Back up. Let's start with 'what is this cosmic energy everyone seems to know about exept me?'."

Pathik stroked his beard. "I see. How old, may I ask Your Primeness, are you exactly?"

Taiza fiddled with his fingers and mumbled, "eighty-eight."

"I'm sorry, what?" He raised an eyebrow.

"Eighty-eight!" He repeated louder with embarrassed rosy cheeks. In his previous life, he died when he turned eighty-two and his memories continued when he was reborn. While in his new life as a spirit, he was six and his soul added eighty-two years, making him currently eighty-eight of age. In other words, Taiza was still a baby as a Primordial, who possessed the longest lifespan in the spirit world. Unlike humans, who would usually be offended at having their age called out, the age of a spirit was a source of pride. Therefore, according to a spirit's common sense, it was SUPER EMBARRASSING to be young.

Pathik laughed. "To think Your Primeness was still so young." He was technically fifty years older than the young Chi Primordial.

"Stop that 'Your Primeness'-thing this instant!" Taiza felt irritated and crossed his arms. "It's annoying."

"Alright, Dagaz," the Guru said and patted the space in front of him. "Come, sit."

Taiza sat down in a lotus-position and overlapped his palms upwards in his lap.

"Now, concentrate on me. I am already connected. Just follow the flow and the cosmic energy will show you the way."

The young spirit closed his eyes and concentrated.

...

When Taiza opened his eyes again, he found himself floating and watching the stars. He stretched out his arms. Energy, he never felt before, gushed through him like a warm breeze of air. As if hypnotized, he watched its flow until a little light appeared, and suddenly, he found himself gazing upon a figure watching his depressing former self.

He may have had various hobbies and tried all sorts of things to find joy in his previous life, but he never liked to remember his former self. He was excessively tolerant of other people, let others betray his kindness while keeping up a brave face, and one day, he shut himself from the world.

The figure, on the other hand, was fascinated by this miserable person. From childhood to adulthood and old age, wisdom beyond his years were always present. It was like watching a long-lived spirit live the life of a human in an unsuitable environment.

As Taiza sensed the figure's feelings, he realized who that was... the previous Chi Primordial. "You are..."

...

Taiza found himself crashing back to reality. His breath became ragged as he realized something. He himself had been too complacent. Ignorant even.

Both lifetimes had something in common. His childhood felt like a happy everlasting dream. Even now, he was too accepting of reality. He began feeling anxious. Even if this was another world, who's to say this life won't end the same? Alone, bitter, and full of darkness without light.

In his mind, he posed a question he should have asked himself a long time ago: If childhood was a dream, when would the nightmare begin?

He couldn't accept it this time. He may currently have his mother's protection, but even that couldn't last forever. Someday, a bird must leave the nest. Willing or not. He had to find his own way of life. But the only thing he could do as a six-year-old was learn about the world he was living in...

oOo

The head maid of the Longhuo Palace spotted the azure dragon of the Lady. She stood ready to welcome the Young Master back from his trip to the Eastern Air Temple.

Grace landed with the elegance of her namesake... gracefully. The Young Master's demeanor shifted to a more stoic one with an air of aloofness, but a silent fire seemed to have awakened in his unique amber eyes.

The mead maid bowed. "Welcome home, Young Master."

The boy nodded, acknowledging her, but with his thoughts far away. "Tell Mother I'm going to study. It seems I should start thinking about what I am truly capable of."

The Head Maid was perplexed, but it wasn't her job to question those who rule the island, only to serve. "I will relay your words to Her Ladyship, Young Master."

...

"... that is what he said?" Taiza's mother inquired as she sipped her jasmine tea in her office. Listening to her maid's report, her son sought seclusion to gather himself.

"Yes," the head maid confirmed.

Rozé chirped, happy that Taiza had returned home. She currently spent time in the Longhuo Palace as Taiza took her home at her insistence. When she hatched, her plumage was silver from head to toe, but it had started taking on a red hue and she rapidly grew over the summer. Her iris had stayed silver and her pupils turned blood red.

"Let him be and leave proper meals in the lounge next to the library's entrance," she ordered. She looked out the window. The sky was void of clouds and the barrier looked undisturbed... too undisturbed. "Ready my workshop. It seems I'm in the mood to paint."

oOo

With the age of seven, Taiza was officially enrolled in Dragonfire Academy. There, he studied archery, the differences between 'official' and 'true' history, firebending forms, survival, national culture, music, SMT TECH (Spirit Magic Tool TECHnology) and much more.

In the spirit world, several days have passed and the Council of Primordials still hadn't come to an end.

"... about Sokka's pendant. Will it be fine to leave it?" Zephyr asked.

"My guess would be that he always had that thing around his neck," Terran theorized. "Master told him about his heritage but they were the kids of the Chief anyway. In the old timeline, Sokka eventually became the Chief of the Southern Water Tribe, not by blood but by his own merits."

"Right now, Sokka's heritage makes even less sense than the pendant's existence, if you ask me," Dagaz added. "Or maybe it's just my warped common sense since I grew up with all this stuff for seventeen years."

"...elemental spiritual energy... elemental chi..." Solaria mumbled, thinking to herself.

"What is it, Daughter?" Agni asked.

"No, it's just, for the spirit succession, isn't there a place where both energies we need exist?"

"Already tried it, Spitfire," Terran sighed. "Both energies exist right here, in the Realm of Chi, but they can't be manipulated into elemental energies."

"I'm not talking about here, Boarhead!" She yelled, irritated, and leaned back, calming herself again. "I mean in the mortal world. Isn't there a place where it's unusually dense?"

A silence followed where one could easily hear a pin drop. Two were never that concerned, two were too focused on the world as a whole, and the two youngest were confused as they haven't been taught about it yet.

Solaria widened her eyes in realization. "What?! Are you kidding me? No. Wait. Don't tell me. Let me guess. You never thought of it before." She facepalmed, hard. "I don't believe this! Do I have to do everything myself or what?"

Author's Notice :

This amateur author seemed to have overlooked a detail on the dragon birds. I never read the Kyoshi Novels in which it is supposedly confirmed that the dragon birds existed even before the Hundred Year War. In the Earth Kingdom's Hao Dynasty, to be precise. But I already have my lore for this part planned out, and I don't even want to change it since I already teased it in previous chapters, and it's a part of my 'history-expansion' plot-lines AND my favorite one at that.

Recently, I researched the Hundred Year War Era, and it accurately confirms how Dagaz described Ozai. Such evil plots turned out to be the norm for Fire Lord Ozai's reign, like tossing unusable people to the colonies, banishments, assassinations, and so on.

I'm still going with the theme that the Avatar is an irregularity in the avatar-verse. It has its own magic-logic apart from the spirit world.

Theory 1: In some cultures, it's believed that memories get wiped before the cycle of reincarnation continues. It's actually one of my own theories that the animal guide's soul may be the reincarnation of Avatar Wan's deercat and that its persona follows the Avatars into Raava's collective memory-network (so to speak). It's kinda like the Avatar Relics which seem familiar to previous Avatars and they establish a bond with the animal guide every time the reincarnation cycle continues. If there are multiple, then the rest are just pets (Aang literally confirmed in the original series that Momo is his pet and Appa the animal guide).

This chapter will tie into my take on why firebenders are so common even thought they're not very spiritual people. You may look forward to what happened to the other half of the surviving dragon eggs and my theory on why the dragons were hunted and killed during the Hundred Year War in the first place.

Theory 2: What if the magical creatures of the avatar-verse were originally spirits? Avatar Wan developed the 'Dancing Dragon' by learning from a dragon spirit, so I thought that's what these 'bending' creatures might've been originally: Spirits. They are pretty much the equivalent of Divine Beasts or Magic Beasts from asian comic-culture, so I called them Spirit Beasts to properly categorize them.

I've been searching for I-have-no-idea-how-long for a fanfic that focuses on exploring the avatar-verse and the foundation/structure/origin of its magic-system. Sadly, there is no such thing. So when I finally developed a creative fever (which ridiculously lasted almost a decade), I thought, why not write one myself? I even came up with an additional lore/history for the moon and ocean spirits. You may look forward to that too as there is more than I already told.

Fun Facts / Trivia :

- '工匠/Gong Jiang' means 'artisan, smith' in Mandarin Chinese

- Roze as a girl's name is of Latin origin, and the meaning of Roze is 'rose'. Rozé is a variation of the name Roze or Rose. Turns out, Rose is an actual Fire Nation name since the flower grows in the Fire Nation and there's even a colonial girl of mixed heritage in the RPG Tabletop Game named 'Rose'.

- remember that Airbending move Zuko demonstrated in his Agni Kai (Ch1) and when Dagaz was impressed (Ch2)? It's a real breakdancing move called 'Windmill' executed with one's feet.

- the 'Primordials' are based on the concept of 'Spirit Kings/Queens'
