David, Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz: Prologue

By: jungleboy69

It was a calm and quiet night out on the Kansas Farm. Em was in the kitchen, brewing a pot of tea while the full moon shone it's slivery light into the window. She sighed as she looked out the window. She enjoyed peaceful nights like this, with her husband Henry.

"I'm back, honey!" A voice called out, followed by a door shutting. Em looked up to see her husband coming into the kitchen. "You certainly took your time, dear." Em giggled as Henry approached her from behind and kissed her on the cheek.

Henry sighed. "Them chickens were a real work." He muttered. "They may look dumb but they're smarter than they appear to be." He grumbled as he looked at his arms which were covered in pecks and scratches. "Oh dear..." Em replied. "I'll get some ointment and bandages."

"In the meantime, I know just the thing to cheer you up." She poured some tea into a cup and offered it to him. "A nice hot cup of tea." Henry smiled a bit and accepted the cup, sipping the tea gently. "You always made the best tea." He pointed out, making his wife smile.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

The couple looked up in confusion. "Did you hear that?" Henry asked. "I did." Em replied, looking at the front door. "Who could that be?" KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! The door rattled again. Henry sighed and placed the cup on the table.

"I'm coming, I'm coming!" He called as he walked through the living room and made his way to the front door. Just as he placed his hand on the doorknob, there was a final loud KNOCK!, shaking the door slightly before it went silent.

Henry turned the knob and opened the door, only to find that there was no one there. Confused, he peeked his head out to get a better look and looked around to see if there was anyone nearby. "Hello?" He called out in the dark. "Is someone there?"

'Waah! Waah!'

Henry jumped at the sound and looked down. His eyes widened when he saw a basket on the doorstep with a crying baby boy with golden hair and wrapped in several blue cloths inside. "What on earth..." He muttered, quickly taking up the basket and bringing it inside, shutting the door behind him and hurried into the living room.

"Henry, who was that at the-" Em asked before she gasped when she saw the baby boy, still crying away in his basket. "Oh, the poor thing!" She cried, hurrying over and taking the baby in her arms and rocking him gently.

"Shh...shh, don't cry now." She cooed softly to the infant. The baby stopped and looked at her with sky blue eyes. He smiled and reached out to her with his small chubby hands, making Em squeal at his cuteness.

"Where did he come from?" She asked her husband as he sat on the couch. "I don't know, dear." Henry replied, shaking his head. "I couldn't see anyone else at the door." He looked at the baby in his wife's arms. "I found him on the doorstep"

While Em began to rock the baby and softly singing a lullaby to him, Henry looked through the blankets in the basket to find any clue about the baby. As he took out a few blankets, a folded piece of paper fell out and landed at his feet.

Picking it up and setting the blankets aside, he cleared his throat, getting Em's attention. He waved the paper at her and gestured to the couch. Slowly, she went over and sat down next to him, careful not to wake the baby who had fallen asleep while Henry opened the note

It said:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am the caretaker of this child. I have been taking care of him for a few months ever since his parents have died but times have grown hard and I am unable to provide for him anymore. I don't wish to take him to an orphanage since I don't really trust them. I decided to leave him with a family who will love and care for him. I apologize for this inconvenience but I had no other choice. The child's name is David and he was born in November 27th. If you are unable to raise him, then at least find a family who will love him no matter what.

Sincerely,

O

The couple looked at the note, then at the baby boy with sad expressions. "The poor thing..." Em whispered, stroking the baby on his head. "Eight months old and all alone." Henry sighed, shaking his head. "What kind of parent would abandon their own child like this?" He muttered.

He looked at his wife, who was looking at him with a knowing expression. Instantly, Henry knew what she was thinking. "No." He protested. "No, Em; we can't..." "Henry, please." Em pointed out. "He needs us; we can't leave him out in the cold."

"Em, please; this is a huge responsibility" Henry protested. "Taking care of a baby is a huge step for us." "Are you sure we're ready to have a family?" He asked. Em sighed. "I think we are." She replied. "We have been taking care of this farm for 20 years; how different can it be for one little boy?"

"Besides," she added, looking at the sleeping infant with a soft smile. "I have been praying to the Good Lord for a child." Henry's eyes widened. "You have...?" He asked. Em nodded. "Yes, I had hoped that we would have a new addition to our small family." She confessed. "Don't you want to have a child too, Henry? To hear the sound of laughter and little feet around the farm?"

Henry looked at his wife, before he looked at the baby sleeping soundly. He sighed. "Even if I say no, there's no point in arguing with you, is there?" He asked. Em smiled. "No, there isn't." She replied. Henry smiled back, it had been a long time since he smiled like. "Alright, we'll keep him." He relented.

Em smiled so widely that it threatened to split her face. She looked at the sleeping baby boy and tenderly stroked his head. "Welcome to the Gale Family, David."
