With great power comes great responsibility.
That's what Peter Parker keeps telling himself. His heart is broken. He's lost his girlfriend. He's lost his best friend. He still sees them around New York, but he can't be with them. They do not know who he is; they've forgotten, because of the spell. As much as Peter wants to be with them, he knows he can't. The enemies he has made as Spider-Man will use them, harming them. They could be hurt. They might be killed. Peter can't let that happen.
With great power comes great responsibility.
The power is that of a spider. Tremendous strength, agility, and precognition just a few but the most easily showcased of his power. Donning his red-and-blue suit every night, he uses his abilities to capture criminals and save civilians from dangerous situations. Simply, he beats the police to the punch.
However, recently, there was a very public situation involving the Tracksuit Mafia. Seeing the several big men with several big guns outside the Rockefeller Center, Peter kept his distance, watching from afar, using his powers to watch from high up on the side of a nearby building. That is where he saw Kate Bishop, and never saw her again.
Kate left New York after the whole debacle. She went to spend Christmas with Clint and the Bartons, and she stayed in Missouri through the New Year. There, she was basically adopted by the Bartons, becoming the responsible big sister. On the third of January, Kate left back for New York, arriving on the fourth after a night flight. At around three in the morning, she drives for her apartment, which she hired a cleaning service to fix up for her. She hails a taxi and heads for home.
Meanwhile, Peter is restless. Tonight, he cannot sleep. He is lurking around the walls of the buildings, looking for crime. Shady figures are few and far between.
The taxi arrives at Kate's apartment at the same time Peter does. While the taxi is obviously on the road, Peter is on a rooftop across the street. The air stings with the cold of winter; mounds of snow are scattered randomly throughout the scene. Peter freezes in his jumpsuit, but knows he needs to where it, so people know that Spider-Man was there.
As Kate walks the few steps to the door of the apartment building, a couple of big men, dressed in all black (like Kate is) approach from the shadow of the sidewalk. One of them is smoking a cigarette.
"Saaay," the man not smoking reacts when he sees Kate, bumping his partner, "what's a girl like you doing out this late?"
Peter leans over the side of the building, watching and listening.
Kate turns to the face the men, deadpan, completely expressionless. The other man blows a cloud of smoke in her face. She lets out a single cough. Knowing that the men are after her for something, she lies, "I'm visiting my grandmother. She can't sleep, so I went out and got some pills for her."
"Oh, yeah?" The speaking man responds. "Let's see them pills."
Kate glances at each man's eyes, then swiftly kicks the speaking man in the waist, making him grunt as he hunches over, stumbling backwards. The smoker throws his cigarette at Kate, but she knocks it away with rapid reflexes. Then, in a smooth motion, she punches the man in the jaw.
However, as Kate makes her punch, the other man recovers from the kick, and he gets a pistol out from under his coat. Peter sees this and, sensing Kate is in trouble, shoots a web at the pistol, the webbing sticking to the barrel of the pistol perfectly.
Both the man and Kate turn to look up at where the web came from.
Peter calls and waves with his free hand, "Hey down there! You know, it's not nice to pick on innocent girls!"
The man turns his gun at Peter to shoot, but Peter pulls the gun out of his hands. He shoots a web at the apartment building and swings down. The man, frozen in shock at what he is seeing, doesn't move, and Peter's feet kick him squarely in the stomach, sending him crashing into the nearby wall only a couple feet away, knocking him out.
Kate is stunned. She stares at Spider-Man, jaw dropped, eyes wide. Behind her, the smoker gets up. Without turning or flinching, she throws her fist up and backwards, punching him in the face and knocking him out.
Peter asks, "Uh, are you okay, Miss?"
"You're…" Kate stammers, "you're Spider-Man." On the outside, she is calm. On the inside, she's all IT'S SPIDER-MAN HE'S AN AVENGER THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING!
"Uh, yes, that's me," Peter replies. "I am Spider-Man." Behind the mask, Peter is able to play the situation coolly in front of who he believes is a very beautiful girl.
Kate is totally fangirling. She moves her right hand back over her hair, trying to look as good as she can in front of a hero, then extends her hand for a handshake. "I'm… Kate Bishop."
"Pe—" Peter begins, almost about to introduce himself as he shakes Kate's hand. He catches himself. "Pleasure to meet you, Kate."
"Ummm…" Kate stalls the moment, still shaking Peter's hand, not wanting the moment with Spider-Man himself to end, "I'm sort of a hero myself, so if you ever need me, you can just find me."
"Here at your grandma's?" Peter asks. "Or— or somewhere else?"
"No, no," Kate says, "this is my apartment. I live here. Just… don't tell anybody, okay?"
"Your secret's safe with me," Peter replies. This is his first meaningful, longest-lasting personal interaction with anyone since the spell.
"Oh!" Kate says suddenly. She stops shaking Peter's hand to grab a business card from inside a coat pocket. She hands it to him. "Here. This is my mom's… this is the business that I work at. Bishop Security. Just… you can contact me through there if you need me. Just say in the subject line on the email that it's for Kate, 'cause I never get any emails through the company."
Peter doesn't have any pockets and has no place to put the card. He would feel awkward turning around, so he asks Kate, "Would you mind turning around for a second?"
"Uhhh, sure…?" Kate reacts, turning her back to Peter.
Peter takes off his mask quickly, puts the card in it, and puts it back on.
"Am I okay to turn around now?" Kate asks.
"Uh, yeah," Peter says, "you're good."
Kate turns around to face Peter again. She chuckles, "What was that about?"
"No pockets," Peter says, pulling at the sides of his uniform to prove it. "I put the card in my mask."
"If you need me," Kate remarks, "I'm always here. Through the email. Or my phone number, do you want my phone number?"
"No, I don't need it," Peter denies. "I'll find you."
"Thank you," Kate says, "for tonight."
"Oh, this?" Peter reacts coolly. "This was no problem. This is pretty routine for me. Just… petty theft."
"Good night, Spider-Man," Kate says, heading inside. As she shuts the door, she stops and turns back around to see Peter still standing there, watching her go inside. For a moment, Kate stares into Spider-Man's eyes, searching for the man behind the mask, wondering who it could be. She clears her throat, which clears her mind. "Besides," she says, "I worked with Hawkeye, so, I'm kind of a big deal. I even told him I'm the world's greatest archer. I'm pretty good with a bow and arrow."
"I'll, uh," Peter says, his people skills completely lost in the last few weeks, "I'll keep that in mind." He awkwardly half-salutes Kate, forgetting what a goodbye is like and trying to look like a superhero, and shoots a web to the rooftop, springing upward and not stopping, swinging his way down the street.
Even after her long time spent with Hawkeye, Kate still can't handle meeting a hero. She's almost shaking with excitement as she goes up to her apartment. She met SPIDER-MAN. An AVENGER. He reversed Thanos's snap! He's a legend! And he knows where she lives! Maybe, if she's lucky, she'll be called on to help Spider-Man with an enemy! Maybe. Hopefully.
Meanwhile, Peter swings home to his apartment, wondering exactly who Kate Bishop is. Was she telling the truth? Did she really work with Hawkeye? If she did, she could be a vital asset. Another arrow, a long-distance weapon. "If not," Peter thinks, "she's still pretty." As much as he might want to know her as Peter Parker, he can't risk anything to her, both as a crush and as a civilian. He thinks he only *likes* her because she's the first girl he's interacted with like that since MJ. Yeah, he thinks. That's probably it.
Meanwhile, some dude calls the cops on the unconscious bodies and the police arrest them.
