A/N: I've been playing with this idea for a few months now, but I've been struggling with the writing a lot, with all my other stories the ideas were flowing nicely and fast, and with this one it's been really slow, and it's been driving me crazy LOL. But suddenly tonight I felt like I should finally start the story officially and who knows maybe this will waken up the flow of creativity…, so here goes nothing…
Chapter 1
Arizona looked out the window cursing the fact that she had decided to drive back home earlier in the day. The downpour was relentless, it was on evenings like this that she wished she had moved to the beach instead of the woods and the mountains.
"I should have listened to my gut feeling and stayed in one of the on-call rooms, at least I would have gotten some sleep," she mumbled to an empty space around her as she grabbed her car keys. She opened the front door and took a deep breath. There was no point in taking an umbrella because the wind would definitely break it. She grabbed the raincoat instead and placed it over her head.
"Screw it!" she voiced out loud as she closed the door and made a run for it. She got inside the car quickly and placed the coat on the passenger seat wiping away drops of water that managed to get on her face. She inserted the key into the ignition when her phone sounded.
"Blondie, are you on your way? We need you here, they are prepping Bradley and the heart is gonna be here soon!"
"I have just gotten into the car, I'll be there in twenty, Mark!"
"Why do you live in the woods again and not in the city like all other normal people!?"
"The hospital is on the outskirts, I get there before you would with all the city traffic anyway, why are we having this conversation now Mark? Go be with your sister, and your nephew, they need you!"
Mark sighed, "Right, I'll see you soon!"
"Yep!" Arizona replied and extended her hand to turn off the phone.
"Careful with that rain Blondie!" she heard before the call was disconnected.
Arizona pulled out of the driveway and quickly glanced over to her first neighbor's house as she drove by. The lights were on, and she made a mental note in her head to go check on the sweet elderly couple the next day. They had quickly become like family to her, just like the whole village. She felt welcome and loved since the first weeks she arrived there heart-broken for the second time in six years. Exactly two years ago she came to this village looking for peace of heart and mind, and she found it with this amazing community that helped her remember what was important in life, that helped her get back on her feet and cherish the small things, enjoy having coffee on the porch with Joan and Paul, go for a walk with Sarah and her daughter Joy, laugh at the little girl's happy giggles and let the nature around her pull her into a warm embrace every day.
Coming here was the best decision she had ever made, and in a few days when the sky clears up they will celebrate her second year in the community but now she needed to get back to the hospital and save Mark's nephew. Mark, the man who had so easily become her close friend after his ridiculous attempt to get her into an on-call room. The look on his face when she told him she played for the other team was priceless and had made her laugh so hard that it erased the bitter taste in her mouth left after she kept on remembering the first date anniversary with her ex fiancée that day, the ex who was cheating on her for months before their wedding, the woman who she thought she had found happiness with again.
FLASHBACK
TWO YEARS AGO
"Arizona, honey, can we talk?" Eve asked trying to wrap her arms around Arizona.
"Don't touch me!" Arizona hissed as she continued to throw her clothes into her bag. "I thought you loved me!" Arizona shouted. The pain she felt was overwhelming, she felt immense pressure inside her chest but she didn't want to cry so instead she chose to yell.
"You said you were in love with me! You proposed Eve! You are the one who proposed to me!"
"I do love you, Arizona..."
Arizona laughed sarcastically, "You have a funny way of showing it…" she commented as she turned around to take some more pieces of clothing.
"You were busy all the time, I was lonely…"
"I was planning our wedding! When I wasn't doing the surgeries! You are the one who was taking all the night shif…" Arizona yelled when she suddenly stopped as the realization hit her.
"Oh my God! You were taking night shifts so you could be with her! In that on-call room! And you told me you were taking them to get extra free days for our honeymoon! How long has this been going on?"
Eve crossed her arms, not showing any ounce of regret. "A few months... look, monogamy is really not my thing…"
"Not your thing…" Arizona repeated slowly, "Why did you even ask me to marry you!?"
"We were having fun, I loved spending time with you and I thought I would give it a try, but when I met Wendy, I just realized I wanted to have others too…"
"And it never occurred to you to tell me about that!?"
"Oh come on! You would have never accepted an open relationship…"
"So the better option was to just sleep around behind my back!"
"I didn't want to lose you…"
"But you had no problem cheating on me! I would have preferred you telling me about it than finding you in that on-call room between her legs!" Arizona was angry now, angry at herself for opening her heart again, for trusting Eve, for allowing herself to believe in love again.
"You know what hurts the most?" Arizona's voice trembled as she zipped up her bag and turned around. She looked up and let their eyes meet for the first time that evening. Arizona couldn't hide the hurt and the pain reflecting in her gaze.
"You knew my story…" Arizona whispered, "…you knew how broken I was and you didn't care… you just didn't care about the damage your actions would do to me…" She swallowed hard before she lifted the bag from the bed. "I should have never trusted you, I was a fool for trusting you…" Arizona said with more determination as she walked past Eve.
"Arizona…, I am sorry, I just…, I can't give you what you need…"
"Clearly you can't," Arizona hissed back as she took her coat.
"I don't know what to say, I just…" Eve spoke again but Arizona cut her off,
"There's nothing left to say," Arizona took the ring off her finger and tossed it onto the table.
"Goodbye Eve," she finished and quickly stepped out of the apartment.
Arizona knew Eve would not follow and she was grateful for it because she didn't want to talk to her anymore, she just wanted to get away and be alone. She got into her car and drove off as far away as she could. She decided to go to a hotel outside of the city, gather her thoughts and make a plan.
The hotel was quiet. Arizona walked slowly to the room she got and entered inside. She dropped her bag on the chair and took her coat off. She sat down on the bed and inhaled deeply staring at the wall in front of her as the scenes from two hours before kept on playing in front of her eyes again. She sighed heavily and headed to the bathroom and when she stepped under the shower her thoughts unwillingly travelled to another time and another woman.
Arizona fought the thoughts and tried to make her brain focus on the water that was coming out of the shower but her mind wouldn't listen. After a few minutes she shook her head and stepped out of the shower. She tried hard to push away the thoughts about Charlotte but her bright smile kept appearing in front of her eyes and Arizona let her body drop onto the bed as tears started streaming down her face. The tears were not for the pain that Eve inflicted, the tears came for the life she could have had with Charlotte, the life she should have had…
END OF FLASHBACK
Arizona shook her head wondering what had suddenly brought on all these memories, she was finally at peace and happy again, there was no reason to remember the painful past. Just focus on the road, she thought as she squinted her eyes trying to protect them from the lights coming from the car driving towards her.
What happened next felt like a sequence of slow motion scenes playing in front of her eyes even though everything occurred within seconds. She saw a reindeer appear in the corner of her left eye, she saw the car that was coming from the opposite direction swerve to its left in an attempt to avoid the deer and cross the middle of the road as her right foot immediately hit the brakes. She saw the deer run to the other side in the background as the wet road caused the back of her car to dance from left to right while the car in front of her got closer and closer and then all she saw was white in front of her eyes as the terrible sound of colliding vehicles filled the surrounding.
A/N: Soooo, I'm kind of going AU here, I'm still not sure where I want this set, currently the idea is that Arizona is in Manitou Springs, Colorado and the hospital is Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, but I am not sure about this, I want it to be a small town/village surrounded by forests and outside of a bigger city, I was also considering Minnesota, but I couldn't find a small picturesque town with forests around it… I guess I'm looking for something that looks like the location of the Netflix show Virgin River, but maybe I don't even have to mention the names of the village/hospital/city and just go with the name of the state and make everything else imaginary. Any suggestions are welcome :-).
Hope to see you on board with this one and thank you for reading :-) and please throw in some ideas for the setting.
