"It's not asking much."
"It is."
"I'll go easier than last year."
"That's what you said last year."
"And it was easier. You had a whole month less of nightmares."
"Kid, we're not having this conversation! Me and Patty aren't going to celebrate Halloween with you!"
Kid and Liz were arguing, Patty laughing hysterically beside them, as they walked up to Maka and Soul. The five started walking to school together after construction closed the road Maka and Soul usually took. Most days it was a bit of a pain waiting for them, but their conversations tended to make it worth it. Today didn't seem to be an exception.
"What are you talking about?" Soul asked.
"Kid doesn't want us to leave, but he goes craaaaaazy on Halloween, so we're goin to New York baby!" Patty explained.
Kid rolled his eyes. "I stay perfectly sane on Halloween."
"No you don't! You make our house haunted! That's what insane people do!" Liz shivered. "I hate just thinking about it."
"Haunted houses are staples of Halloween. I still don't see why you hate celebrating with me so much; I've been complimented for 'getting into the spirit' constantly."
Maka and Soul exchanged looks. They've never thought about it, but Halloween to a Death God must have been like Christmas. It probably would be absolutely amazing!
Maka's dad absolutely loved celebrating halloween with her when she was young, and she loved it too. After growing up, she saw just how plastic and corporate it is and it lost its magic. If anybody could bring back a love of Halloween, it would be the person who wears nothing but black, white, and skulls daily. "If Liz and Patty don't want to, I'd be happy to celebrate with you."
"Yeah, it sounds pretty cool," Soul added.
Kid's eyes lit up. "Really?"
Patty began laughing again as Liz shook her head. "No, you really don't want to do that," Liz said.
"Do it! I wanna hear about your reactions!" Patty said.
Kid was lost in thought. "There's so many possibilities~"
"If it's as scary as you say, I'm sure the 'big brave Black Star' and Tsubaki would love to come too! It might be a bit much for Crona though, but it'd still be fun with just the five of us," Maka added. That made Kid smile. He usually didn't beam like that unless symmetry was involved, so Halloween must have really been something special.
"You do NOT want to do that! You've seen Kid when something's perfect. He's double as passionate about this!"
Soul gave Liz a big toothy smile. "Sounds like it's going to be a great Halloween then."
Soul knocked on the large doors of Gallow's Mansion. Both him and Maka were dressed in 'Alice in Wonderland' based costumes, Maka being Alice and Soul was somehow convinced to dress up like the white rabbit.
"It's open," they both heard from inside, but it wasn't Kid's voice. It sounded more like Tsubaki. Either way, it was right. With just a twist of the handle, the large doors opened. Inside, Black Star, dressed as Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street, and Tsubaki, dressed like Dorthy from the Wizard of Oz, were both waiting, one more patiently than the other.
It was definitely much more decorated than usual. The floor was covered in fake grass, stones of all shapes and sizes were placed around the large living room. Maka couldn't help but notice that all the 'tombstones' were evenly spaced and lined up perfectly with the other half of the room. Some skeletons and fake body bags were scattered around the graveyard, again in a seemingly much-too-perfect pattern to actually be that realistic. The parameter of the room was covered in metal bars with black paintings behind them to give the illusion that they were all outside. The only thing that didn't seem to match was this eerie organ and violin piece that played softly, but it did add to the mood
It was all fairly impressive. If the lights weren't on, showing off the paint, plastic, and symmetry of it all, it would have definitely looked like a real cemetery.
"Where's Kid?" Maka asked.
Black Star shrugged, kicking over a tombstone. For plastic, it was surprisingly sturdy. "I dunno. The door was open when I got here."
Suddenly, the ground started getting covered by a thick cloud of smoke coming from both sides. A large gust of wind blew, despite the fact that they were inside, and blew out all the candles, making it much darker inside, but light from the setting sun still crept in. The music was crescendoing, and so was the sound of heavy footsteps.
Obviously, Kid was setting up a scene to scare them, but Maka would be lying if she said it didn't make her uneasy. "Soul…" she mumbled.
He knew from her tone of voice that she meant that she wanted him to be on transformation standby. "Right."
Before they could do anything, mummy-like bandages slung around the four of them, rapping them all too lightly for movement. Only their eyes and mouths were left free.
"Hey, what's going on here?" Black Star asked nobody in particular.
"Kid can't do this… can he?" Tsubaki said.
Soul glowed, then the glow broke, so he tried again with the same result. "Damn it. I can't transform wrapped up like this."
After a deep breath, Maka closed her eyes, opening them only to see souls. She saw all three of her three friends' teeming with fear, even Black Star's, although to a much lesser extent. Most interesting was the pure soul energy swarming all around them. The hallway in front of them, directly where the sound of steps was coming from, growing closer and closer, had no soul to be seen.
"K-Kid? This isn't-"
Maka was cut off by a sudden force. The four students were now suspended in the air by what appeared to be magic, which Kid most definitely couldn't do. This was real. Fight or flight kicked in for all of them, but their struggles did nothing to the bandages around them.
Simultaneously the music and steps stopped, leaving them in an eerie silence filled only by their beating hearts and heavy breaths. That was until the floor began creaking behind them. They couldn't even turn their heads with the bandages, but they didn't need to. A spikey silhouette flew above their heads, and stopped in front of them, its large wings flapping to keep itself at eye level. The only thing they could see outside of the things outline were jagged, glowing hands and a pair of eyes that beamed a bright yellow. It started lifting up its hands, moving the dim light to show a dark liquid dripping all down its gray face. Blood.
They could all hear the thing take a deep breath as its hands rose even higher. The four braced themselves as the hands lunged forward. A sudden barrage of bright light blinded them.
"Boo!"
As their eyes adjusted to the light, they saw that the monster they thought was in front of them really was Kid, but dressed up as Ryuk from Death Note. The liquid dripping down his face wasn't actually blood, but ended up being the gray and dark blue dye and hair spray he put on for his costume being rejected by his reaper anti-toxins.
He dropped to the floor, the two pairs of meisters and weapons falling down with him. With a wiggle of his costumed fingers, the bandages all unraveled themselves. "Fun right? I did something like this with Liz and Patty last year, and Patty loved it! Liz… didn't like it so much…"
The four, now fully unwrapped, stood and stared at their friend in silence. Black Star was the first to speak up. "That was… AWESOME! Of course, I wasn't scared, but the way you made us fly like that! Best Halloween ever!"
"I'll admit, that was really cool," Soul added. "I just thought Liz was exaggerating."
Tsubaki was scared utterly speechless, so Maka spoke next. "Kid, how did you do that?! Y-you can't just make things levitate, can you?"
The reaper smiled in response. "You don't know the origin of Halloween, do you?"
Author's Note: So Halloween night has just begun. I don't know how many chapters this will be, but I do have a fair bit written (but not edited) and a set ending in mind, which I'll hopefully reach before the 31st. I wouldn't bet on it though. I'd absolutely love any kind of comment/review you can think of. I don't write scary stories often, so hopefully it's good. Thanks for reading!
