A listlessness hung around the hospital as Yaoyorozu made her 'rounds'. Her classmates were mostly okay. Physically at least. But there were many wounds that the hospital couldn't treat.
She felt the burn of tears in her eyes again. For just a few seconds she was back at the battlefield crumbling again as she looked at Midnight. Then she was back again, in a mundane hospital hallway.
Wiping her cheeks she put on a brave face. As a hero student and the class vice rep, she needed to check in with the rest of her classmates.
It was an excuse, what she needed was anything to get her mind off things. Vice Class Rep duties were something she could hold onto at least. It gave her a reason to get up and check on people. With the exception of Midoriya and Bakugo, her classmates were awake, aware, and more or less ambulatory. Even though she really hoped Todoroki stayed in bed to recover.
But most of her classmates, even though they hadn't been badly hurt or had already been treated, were in as much a daze as her. She could see it in their eyes the smiles they forced when they saw her coming. She had one plastered on as well, papering over the pain she felt. It hurt to maintain it, cheeks burning with forced cheerfulness.
Not everyone could. Hagakure was lucky, but not even she could maintain an upbeat attitude. Mina, usually indefatigable, was slumped against Kirishima, both dead to the world fast asleep.
It should have been cute! It should have caused her to smile, her heart should be warmed by the sight. Instead, her mind drifted to dark thoughts. She knew the reason they were asleep now was exhaustion. Nobody had slept well since the battle, but Mina hadn't been able to since...
She kept walking, checking in on Jiro and Kaminari. Her acerbic friend received her with a nod and a desultory wave of an earphone jack. Kaminari glanced over at her and nodded. Neither said anything, their muted conversation dying dropping the moment she got close enough to hear.
She went through the motions, asking if they were okay or feeling better. Thankfully Jiro's earphone jacks had made a full recovery from Dabi's attack thanks to medicine and quirks. There wouldn't be any scars.
None that anyone would see, anyway.
She left them to their privacy and trudged on, passing Sero, Sato, and Shoji, dropping pleasantries and encouraging words that fell completely flat.
Her head hurt. She should return to her room and lay down. The doctors hadn't really wanted her walking around. She'd used too many calories and had come close to exhausting her quirk. But she couldn't just lay there and do nothing. She couldn't.
Her phone rang, finally drawing her back out of her own head. She pulled it out and saw her mother's number. Part of her wanted to shove it right back in her pocket. The last thing she wanted right now was a lecture or another conversation about how heroics wasn't the only way to help people.
But she couldn't, not now. Who knew what information had been released? Her parents might not know anything had happened or they might be worried sick. She sighed and brushed her thumb across the screen.
"Are you okay?" The words came out in a rush before she even had the phone to her ear, "Momo?"
"I'm fine mother," She tried to sound resolute, but she could hear herself. All she sounded was tired.
"Are you?" Her mother pressed, "I know you were there. People took pictures, there are clips all over."
Yaoyorozu groaned and ran her hand through her hair. Would it have killed people to flee for their lives instead of hovering nearby to record the battle? "Yes. I was there. But it's over right now. I was checked over, I didn't have anything more than scratches."
"And your classmates?"
Since when had she cared about them? She shook her head, "They're fine-"
"Are they?" Her mother interrupted, and Yaoyorozu bit her tongue, "The ones that fought that white-haired monster looked terrible by the end of it."
"You didn't let me finish Mother." She let out an exasperated breath, "Midoriya, Bakugo, and Todoroki were all injured during the fighting," They could have died. "Kaminari was unlucky-"
"Unlucky?" Her mother asked sharply.
Yaoyorozu rested her head in her hand, "One of the villains hid boulders inside marbles, he threw them and deactivated his quirk. It caught him in the chest." He could have died. All of them could have died. She cleared her throat. "He had a few broken ribs, but he was treated by Recovery Girl, he'll be fine in a few days."
"Was anyone else 'unlucky'?"
"Dabi burned Jiro's earphone jacks, but they've already been treated. But that's it. That was the extent of the injuries." And for that, she could only be thankful.
"And your teachers?"
Yaoyorozu pulled the phone from her ear and barely resisted the urge to end the call. "They are Pro Heroes mother."
"Were, from the look it. Social media has been blowing up about what happened to your Art teacher."
"Enough Mother. I don't want to hear about it."
"If they can't-"
"I was there, Mother!" Yaoyorozu's throat burned, "I was one of the people who found her! You do not need to tell me what happened because I already know." She sucked in a few steadying breaths, "Now if that's all you wanted to talk about I'm going to go and rest."
The other end of the line was silent for a long moment, Yaoyorozu knowing better than to expect the call had actually ended.
When her mother spoke again there was a hint of contrition in her voice, "I'm sorry you had to see that Momo."
She felt a laugh crawl out of her. It was bitter and distasteful, and she couldn't help it. The other end of the line was quiet again. There was something that wasn't being said, Yaoyorozu knew it, but she couldn't bring herself to care, "I'm going to rest now mother." She hung up and wiped away fresh tears.
Author's notes: This is something I'm working on. It won't be focused solely on Yaoyorozu.
