This is the last chapter for this fic- which includes some very sad stuff- poor Kanes, they all want Percy back.
Replies:
Ryan Fowler: Horus when not in Percy's presence, when she's in a coma or when she's sleeping: Eh, she's got some power but I wouldn't say she's scary.
Horus when Percy is awake and glaring at him: Meep.
Dotalot345: Don't worry too much- Sadie and Carter aren't dealing with everything alone really.
Guest: I get the suggestion but Percy's injured in a way that even water can't heal so easily.
Drizzle: I would say that Egyptian Deities work differently, and also that magicians are maybe built different as hosting gods can kill normal immortals and burn them out- and Percy is both a magician who happens to be the Blood of Pharaohs, and a demigod all in one so she's built stronger automatically.
Unknownloser097: CRY THEN! HERE! CRY MORE!
Batmanuchiha: They possibly could yes, and will you say that at the end of the chapter?
Guest: I know what will be done with Setne, I have plans for him. Also, I love his interactions with Percy. I find them hilarious. We have 10 year old girl vs ancient powerful magician and it's awesome.
Sally hated leaving Percy's side.
It felt like a betrayal whenever she did. Her baby girl was in a coma and- everyone was slowly losing hope that she would ever wake up. Even Sally was starting to doubt that she'd ever get to see her little girl smile again.
But, well, she refused to let herself dwell on that, not today of all days. She hummed softly to herself as she worked, a cheery little tune- as if it could somehow make her happier by magic.
Occasionally she paused to glance at the clock, absent-mindedly resting her hand over her belly, which was, as Sadie had put it 'The size of a blimp.'
She'd been stunned when she'd been informed by one of the healers that she wasn't, as she'd believed, having one baby, but two. She was pregnant with twins.
She didn't know the sexes yet, and she hadn't picked the names either but, well, in the next month or so, if they were all alive, she'd be cradling two new babies in her arms.
She wished that didn't feel like a betrayal to her other baby but it did. Which was a shame because had Percy been awake she'd have almost certainly been excited about the idea of being a big sister.
Sally pushed those thoughts away and glanced at the clock again, pressing her lips together in a thin line.
Sadie and Carter were due in around half an hour, and Amos had made sure to tell her that he'd be paying Percy a visit when they arrived.
It seemed that she'd finished just in time.
Sally eyed the cake in front of her critically.
It was two tiers, a sea themed cake, with crumbled cookies around the base to look like sand, and white chocolate sea shells painted in bright colors dotted all over it.
And on the top Sally had carefully placed ten candles.
She blinked rapidly, forcing back the tears as she carefully picked it up- oh no doubt Carter and Sadie would tell her off if they saw her carrying it- they'd gotten rather protective lately- they made sure to visit for a full day at least once a week despite their other responsibilities and they were all worrying about each other.
It was a horrible feeling, being helpless, powerless. She couldn't do anything to help any of her babies. Nothing she could do would wake Percy up, and Carter and Sadie had the weight of the world on their shoulders- all of them knew that it was a matter of time before Apophis rose fully, and they all knew that Percy wouldn't be able to force him back into the Duat again- even if she did wake up.
But no-no. No dwelling on the bad things today. Today she was going to try and be as happy as she possibly could for her babies.
She was half way to the infirmary when Sally spotted Desjardins walking the other way- and she gave a faint smile and a small nod. "Michel."
"Sally." the other man gave a small nod- "For her birthday."
"Yes." Sally nodded, "Were you just-"
"I just popped in to see her." the man admitted. Which wasn't a surprise, Sally knew that he had a soft spot for Percy, and she knew that he felt guilty too- though there was nothing he could have done to stop what happened, "Do you need any help?"
"I've got this but-" Sally hesitated, "There is a bowl in the kitchen with some blue cookies in it, if you could bring that up-"
"Of course."
And soon enough everything was set up in Percy's room.
The cake and cookies were set up on the small desk which Sally usually used to write- she'd finished the first two books she'd decided to write and publish about her babies- Carter and Sadie had given her permission and the publishers had jumped on them, the first one was already out and the second would come out in a few months.
Her laptop was tucked away under the bed now, and Zia- who had visited earlier that day, had helped her set up the room, filling it with blue balloons and a banner with the words '10 today!' painted on it.
Percy was, as always led still and unmoving in her bed, the only sign of life the rise and fall of her chest- though Sally had made the effort to braid Percy's hair, to keep it at least somewhat neat. And now there was nothing more for her to do until the others arrived.
And thankfully Sally didn't have to wait long.
Carter and Sadie arrived at the same time as Amos, both rushing up to Sally, who greeted them with somewhat awkward hugs- if only because it really was not easy to hug them when her belly was the size of a blimp.
And soon enough they were all sitting around, chattering and munching on the cookies, Carter and Sadie telling Sally and Amos the latest news- worrying news about attacks on other Nomes, all of which had special versions of The Book of Overcoming Apophis, they were currently trying to track down where other copies of this version- written by some horrible magician who went by the name Setne, might be.
It wasn't good news to say the least but- well, it was something, Apophis wanted to destroy them for a reason, so they wanted to get their hands on the scrolls.
And after Carter and Sadie filled them in on what had been going on at Brooklyn House Sally and Amos talked about what they'd been doing- though Sally knew for a fact that Amos was leaving out certain facts- such as the fact that Amos had been in communication with Set- that did worry her. She remembered how much pain and danger Set had caused- it was hard to forget when her husband wouldn't be there for the birth of their children thanks to the god but- well, Sally could understand why Amos was doing it.
They would need all the power they could get when the time came. If he could work with Set then that would be a huge help.
But of course even that talk couldn't last forever, and eventually Sadie bit her lip, "I- can- I know she's not awake but- I kind of got her a present."
"Oh sweetheart." Sally reached out and gently grabbed Sadie's hand, "I'm sure she'd love it."
"It- I got Walt to help me make it." Sadie's face flushed slightly and she slipped her hand into her pocket, pulling out a small fabric wrapped package- and Carter looked slightly surprised.
"I didn't know you were getting her anything-"
"Like you didn't get her something too." Sadie shot back softly- and Carter blushed too.
"I- it's not really a present."
"Go on you two." Sally gave them a reassuring smile. "Let's see what you got her."
And Sadie carefully unwrapped the fabric to show an amulet hanging on a leather chain- it was a thin clay disk, undoubtedly strengthened by magic, and on the front of it was carved three waves, it wasn't complicated, it was a simple little thing, clearly handmade, but Sally felt a flood of warmth, especially when Sadie turned it around so that Sally could see the hieroglyphs carved onto the back. N'dah. Protect.
"That's wonderful Sadie." Amos was the first to speak, his voice slightly choked, "I'm sure Percy would love it-"
"She would." Carter was giving a slightly wobbly smile, his eyes shining with tears.
"You think so?" Sadie's voice was quiet, "I-"
"Sadie she would love it," Sally gently drew her eldest daughter into her side, kissing the top of her head, "My beautiful silly girl. Percy would be hugging you right now if she could. She would love it." And Sadie let out a soft, stifled little sob as she pressed into Sally's side.
"Can I put it on her?"
"Of course you can." and Sadie pulled away, darting up to Percy, and Carter joined her, lifting Percy's head slightly, so that Sadie could fasten the amulet around her neck.
"It's awesome Sadie." Carter told her with a weak smile. "Seriously. It's much better than what I got her."
"I'm sure that's not true honey." Sally gave a gentle encouraging smile "What did you get your sister?"
And Carter picked up a bag that he'd set down behind his chair, opening it and pulling out a large stuffed toy- a familiar one- and Sally felt her breath catching.
"Oh Carter..."
"It- Percy used to say she missed her Flounder." Carter muttered the words, "When- when she first, when we first met she used to tell me all the time that she missed her Flouder."
"I forgot to pick it up when I packed." Sally spoke up. "Oh baby that- she'd love it."
"Yeah Carter." Sadie managed a smile, though she was clearly fighting back her own tears. "That's actually not a totally lame gift. Not as cool as mine but pretty cool."
"You-" Amos was cut off by a knock on the door- and his brows furrowed, "I asked to be left alone for a few hours-" he stood up, moving to the door quickly and opening it- a harried looking magician in her early twenties was stood there, her face pale.
"Lord Kane- there's been another attack."
"What?" Carter was on his feet instantly, as was Sadie, and Sally let out a heavy sigh.
So much for a nice day.
She watched as Carter and Sadie followed Amos outside- rising to her feet slowly too, though before she followed them she carefully picked up the stuffed Flounder and set it on the bed next to Percy- and then, she stepped outside and closed the door behind her.
...
The darkness had almost been peaceful- Percy hadn't really felt much after she'd forced Apophis out, all she'd known was the sudden darkness that had swallowed her.
It was much preferable to the terror that had come hand in hand with being possessed by Apophis.
And when she woke up it was a slow process.
Percy didn't want to open her eyes, didn't want to face the world- though- she was surprised that she didn't feel any pain. There had been pain before she was sure of it, so much pain, a horrible burning sensation.
Well, it was gone now, that was a good sign right? Percy slowly opened her eyes, blinking up at the white ceiling above her, the lighting was magical, a soft light- that was good, it meant that it didn't hurt her eyes.
Percy pushed herself up slowly- and again, no pain, that was very surprising. She turned her head slowly, looking around the room.
There were balloons- lots of them, blue, and a sign- 10- and oh. Oh that felt like a punch in the gut.
Percy sucked in a sharp little breath as her gaze flicked around some more- there was a bowl of blue cookies on the desk next to the bed she was lying in, and a cake, sea themed.
So... it was her birthday. That was the only explanation but that meant it had been five months.
Gods she must have been in a coma or something, that thought made her feel kind of sick.
She wondered where the others were- it looked like they were set up for a party- maybe they were coming to visit her later in the day?
She exhaled slowly, shifting so that she could turn-and she paused when she felt something soft brushing against her arm- and Percy gasped softly at the sight of the plush toy, picking it up and hugging it to her chest tightly, like she used to when she was little.
And she kept it clutched close as she slowly swung her legs off the bed and stood up- she was shaky and unsteady.
Still, she forced herself to keep moving, reaching the door of the room she was in and opening it, her face splitting into a wide smile when she saw her mom- and- okay that was new, her mom was very very pregnant- Carter, Sadie and Amos gathered outside.
All of them turned at the sound of the door opening, all of them staring at her in shock, and Percy gave her best cheeky grin. "What, you guys didn't think I'd miss my own birthday did you?"
