One Last Breath
Bella had been so happy with how Christmas had turned out. Both her families together with her for the last time. She hadn't told anyone but she had been getting weaker by the day. She felt her time drawing near. She could hear a whisper of a call from her beloved Jack.
But after Christmas she seemed to be deteriorating more quickly. So quickly that her families had taken notice.
"Mum are you alright?" Anthony asks her after coming over from a call from his niece Belinda and sister Alirose.
"I am old my son what do you think?" Bella asks him wearily.
"Let me do some tests please Mother to see what is going wrong", Anthony says to her.
"No", Bella states firmly.
"No?" Anthony asks confused.
"Yes, I don't need any tests to tell you want is wrong with me", Bella replies trying to get up.
But when she does everything goes black and the next thing, she knew she was waking up in a hospital bed hooked up to more wires than she had even seen in her life, the beeping of the heart monitor and the feel of a nasal cannula giving her air.
"What happened?" Bella rasps to her eldest children.
Anthony and Alirose who were beside her bed.
"You passed out. I called an ambulance and they bought you here for tests and to help you and give you all the care you need to get better Mum", Anthony tells her.
"No, I don't want any intervention", Bella tells his firmly, "I want to go home"
"But Mum that would mean you would die", Alirose chokes out.
"We can't all live forever. Can you get Peter, George, Charlotte, Frederick, Johnathan and Alyssa here too? I need to speak to my children. But allow the Grandchildren to wait for what I have to say after I tell you 8", Bella tells them firmly.
"Mum…", Anthony starts.
"Please Anthony don't argue with your old mother", Bella replies weakly.
"Very well. I'll call them. Lucky they are here to celebrate the New Years before going back the week after the holidays", Alirose says kissing her mothers cheek and going out to make the calls.
An hour later her 8 children were gathered in her room. Looking at their Mother who looked so weak now and fragile. She didn't look like the person she used to be. She used to have so much energy and she was full of life. Now it was exactly the opposite.
"Mum so what have the doctors' tests said?" Johnathan asks her.
"And what can they do about it?" Charlotte asks her Mother.
"I am not going to let them do anything about it", Bella tells them gently.
"Why not?" George asks shocked.
"I am old my darlings. I am 98-years-old and have lived quite a life. But I believe I/we shouldn't disrupt what is meant to come next as no one can live forever not matter how much they try", Bella tells them wisely.
"But you will leave us", Alyssa states with tears in her eyes.
Her older siblings were not much better.
"I know baby. But I can feel my time drawing nearer and nearer my darlings. Your beloved Father is calling me home, back to his side", she whispers to them, "His call is getting louder and clearer"
They both looked upset hearing that.
They knew their mother was old and had outlived all her friends and people she had grown closer to after she married Jack.
So it wasn't that unexpected that their Mothers time was nearly up.
"Please my children take me home. Let my die in my bed surrounded by the people I love and in the way I want. Not here hooked up to all these wires and tubes. That is not how I want to die. Let me die with dignity, grace and in my own way"
It didn't take long for the 8 siblings to have their Mother released into their care. Doctor Richard Stevens the old friend of the family was nearly in tears as he gave her the paperwork to release his favourite patient and close personal friend into the arms of her family. So, she didn't have to spend her last days in a hospital room not surrounded by the comforts of home.
He spoke with her for an hour before he finally released her into the car of her relatives and Bella assured Richard that the Cullen's would also be by her side.
They hugged one last time before Alyssa drove her Mother back to the house she had spent nearly all her life in.
The boys helped her into her house and into her bed. Making sure to make her as comfortable as possible and with all the comforts she wanted near her when she went to her end.
"Now my darlings I believe it is time to gather the family for a family meeting. While you get them here, I am going to call my/our new friends the Cullen's and ask them to come here too. With Carlisle being then Grandson of one of my dears' friends and now have become close to all of you. I believe they deserve to know what is going on with me", Bella tells them.
"Are you sure you are up to that?" Fred asks worriedly.
"I am perfectly capable of making a phone call to the Cullen's. I just need you all to do the rest of the family", Bella instructs them.
"We can do that Mother", Peter assures her.
"Good. Now can I please have a phone?"
With the Cullen's…
The Cullen's had gone Hunting. But they didn't seem to have the energy to Hunt or play around or even joke. As something in their souls was trying to tell them something. As well as they just felt something was coming and that something they believed was tied to Bella. She had really gone downhill in the past week and they didn't know how she could go downhill so fast.
They were discussing the matters on their slow way back when Carlisle's phone rings.
Carlisle's eyes widen at seeing Bella's number.
"Bella?" he asks answering the phone, which has the whole family looking at him.
"Hello Carlisle", a cough was heard, "I need to talk to our whole family"
"Bella are you alright?" Carlisle asks worried.
"That is what we need to talk about old friend. I was wondering when you could get to my house?", another cough was heard, "Not really a hurry but I would do it all the same"
That had them REALLY worried. Bella didn't sound like herself.
"We can be there in an hour if that is, ok?" Carlisle asks her.
"I am not going anywhere for a bit longer", Bella chuckles coughing into the phone.
"Mum are you ok?" the Cullen's hear Alyssa's voice in the background.
"I am Alys. Carlisle I will see you and your family in two hours actually if that is ok. It would give me some time to do a couple of things", Bella asks them.
"Two hours is fine. We will see you then…", Carlisle tells her.
Before she hung up, he asks her one last question.
"Do I need to bring anything?" he asks.
"Just yourselves my dear old friends. Just yourself", Bella replies hanging up.
"That didn't sound good Carlisle", Esme states worried.
"I have a very bad feeling about this Dad", Alice tells him trying really hard to look into Bella's future but she hadn't been able to see Bella in decades.
Carlisle had a good idea about what this was all about. And he made sure to block his thoughts from Edward. He didn't want him or his other children to know what he thought was going on until Bella confirms it.
Jasper gives him a look showing he was not fooled.
"Let's go home", Carlisle tells them.
"Carlisle can I talk to you?" Jasper asks him casually.
"Of course, son. Why don't you all met us at home?" Carlisle suggests to them.
They nod hesitantly but take off leaving the two eldest members of their group alone.
"You know what is happening", Jasper states.
"No. It is just a guess", Carlisle replies, "Until Bella says anything differently"
"I have felt her getting weaker and weaker this last week. But I have told no one. She hasn't got much longer, has she?" Jasper asks softly pain and sadness in his eyes.
"No, she doesn't. Don't get me wrong some humans can live over a hundred. But at the rate Bella has been deteriorating this week is confirming my worst fears", Carlisle states with pain in his eyes, "And hearing how bad she sounded on the phone basically confirmed she doesn't have many days left"
"They are not going to take it well", Jasper warns him.
"I know. We will be losing a friend, a daughter, a sister again. And this time for good. I don't expect ANY of them to take this well. All we can do is be there for each other and make Bella's time left is as comfortable as possible", Carlisle replies.
"I can do that if she lets me. I don't want my sister suffering in her final days", Jasper tells him pain in his eyes.
"She is truly lucky to have a brother like you. Now let's get going before the family wonders where we have been and what we have been talking about", Carlisle tells him.
They take off their blocked thoughts thinking about their daughter and sister that will probably be leaving them soon…
Bella's House…
The Cullen's arrive at Bella's house to find her whole family gathered in the house many of them had tears in their eye or their eyes were very red. They were comforting each other and whispering so lowly even they couldn't hear what they were saying.
"Cullen's it is good to see you. I just wish it is under better circumstances", George says to them.
"What circumstances?" Edward asks worriedly as Eliza squeezes his arm in concern.
"That is for Mum to explain. She has been waiting for you", George informs them.
He leads them to the Masters Bedroom. In it were Alirose, Charlotte and Alyssa gathered around the bed talking quietly.
The Cullen's see Bella propped up by the pillows. Looking so frail and weak it was hard to match her to the woman they had reunited with only a few months ago.
Trinkets and photos of her life were spread out around both bedside tables.
Her eyes still had that wise tone about them. But there was also overwhelming weariness and tiredness.
Jasper felt Bella's weak emotions and if her appearance didn't confirm she didn't have much time left. Her emotions would. There was weariness, tiredness, love, concern, pain, and acceptance and relief.
Carlisle heard his daughter's frail heart weakly beating. Telling him she was indeed dying. And her heart didn't have too many beats left in it.
The others were all shocked by Bella's appearance. Edward the most as he couldn't quite get a read on her families thoughts through all the grief and pain.
"Bella", they whisper.
"Girls please give me some privacy with the Cullen's. There are things I need to say to them in private", Bella rasps to her three daughters.
The three looked unsure.
"Don't worry we will look after her. We could never hurt her and if something does happen I am a doctor and well trained to see too her needs", Carlisle assures them gently.
"Thank you. Your kindness has really helped our family and it seems Mum loves you as her own. We will give you some privacy to talk", Alirose tells them with a sad smile.
She ushers her two sisters out and shuts the door.
They rush to her side and Edward takes one of her hands and Carlisle the other. Her withered hands were like ice and oh so thin.
"Bella what is going on?" Edward asks her panicky.
"You know what is happening my beloved family. You can hear it. My heart…", cough, "…doesn't have many beats left in it"
"No, you can't die!" many of them cry.
"All humans do in the end my dear ones. I am 98…", cough, "…and I knew it would be my last Christmas…", cough, "…and made sure the whole family was together one last time. I held out so long after Jack di…", cough, "…died because I held out hope to see you all again one…", cough, "…last…", cough, "…time. I have succeeded with…", cough, "…all my life goals…", cough, "…and plenty more…", cough, "…Now I hear my husband calling me…", cough, "…home", Bella tells them with great effort.
Tears that could never fall were in their eyes as they saw Bella struggle against time.
"Bella, I can't lose you", Alice cries going to hug her gently.
"I am so…sorry…", cough, "…sister. But my time is near…", cough, "…know I will love you always…", cough, "…you have always been my hyper pixie…", cough, "…best friend and…", cough, "…sister. I will cherish…", cough, "…the memories of our time together", cough, "…especially you forcing me to go to prom in a cast", cough, "…And you will still be my sister and…", cough, "best friend when I…", cough, "…cross over. Live life Alice. Don't forget to live…", cough, "…for me. And don't take a single day…century for granted…", cough, "…can you do that for me sister? And vow to try to…", cough, "…live in the moment instead of the future…", cough, "…can you do that for me?" Bella asks her.
"I can try. But it will be so hard!" Alice cries.
"I know. But you need to move on you all do", Bella tells her tiredly.
She then looks at Rosalie and takes her hand out of Carlisle's hand holds it out to her. Her grasps it gently.
"Rose thank you for being my sister…", cough, "…we might not have always got…on. But I have…", cough, "…always considered you, my sister. And I understand you better now…", cough, "…and I thank you for stopping me from becoming a vampire…", cough, "…you lead me on the road to the love of my life Jack and my darling Children…Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren…", cough, "…I have never held the past…", cough, "…against you. You had a very good reason…", cough, "…to do so…I love you sister and can you do me one last…", cough, "…favour?" Bella asks her.
"Anything", Rose says gently squeezing her hand.
"Watch over my bloodline. Please", Bella whispers.
"I swear I will watch over them to the day I am destroyed", Rose vows, "Rest easy knowing they will be safe in my care. You can peacefully go join that wonderful husband of yours and your precious little girl"
"That…that is all I can ask. Emmie Bear?" Bella calls letting go of Rose's hand and taking Emmett's. His big hands dwarfing hers.
"Hey Belly Bean. You can't leave us. Not yet", Emmett says tears that would never fall filling his eyes.
"I am sorry Big Brother I can't do that…", cough, "…my time is rapidly approaching. Do you know even when you left I still…", cough, "…would always think of you as my big brother and still do…", cough, "…even at this age. Live and take care of that…", cough, "…beautiful wife of yours Emmie and do me a favour…"
"Anything Bells", Emmett vows.
"Bag some Grizzly Bears for me", Bella gasps with a smirk, "And protect our beloved family"
Emmett wetly laughs, "You can count on it Little Sister", he kisses her forehead.
Bella then drops his hand and holds it out to Jasper.
"Thank you, brother, for your help…", cough, "…but I know some small part still blames yourself for my 18th birthday…", cough, "…do me a favour yeh?" Bella asks him seeming to get more life in those tired eyes.
"What?" Jasper asks her.
"…let it go! Because of your slip I was able…", cough, "…to met Jack and have a life I couldn't live as a vampire…", cough, "…so in other words it was the best thing to ever happen in…", cough, "…my life besides meeting Jack, our wedding, my children and so on…", cough, "…so I want you to swear to when I pass finally…", cough, "…put your guilt to rest with me. Can…", cough, "…can you do that for me?" Bella asks him.
Jasper kisses her forehead, "I can do that for you Bella"
"I love you Jazzy"
"I love you too sister. May you be reunited peacefully with your husband", Jasper prays letting go of her hand, "Oh and Bella let me show you just how much we love you at the end of these goodbyes"
"I will", she promises.
Bella reaches out to Eliza next.
"I don't know you well. But in the short…", cough, "…time we have know each other I have grown close to you…", cough, "…but not like a sister or friend…", cough, "…but like a daughter", Bella whispers to her.
Everyone's eye widen.
"Look after him my child…", cough, "…that is all I ask of you…", cough, "…and all you can offer me to give me peace…", Bella coughs.
Eliza's eyes fill with tears. She gently squeezes Bella's hand.
"I give you my vow I will do so. And you have become like a second mother to me since we have been here. If you can have two sets of parents so can I. I love you Mother", Eliza says kissing her cheek.
"I love you too my child", Bella whispers letting go of her hand and taking Esme's.
Esme grasps it lightly.
"Mum", Bella whispers.
"Oh my darling daughter. I wish so very much you wouldn't be living us. But I know time for you hasn't stood still. I love you my daughter and for the rest of my existence you won't be forgotten and you will always be my daughter no matter how much time will pass", Esme vows to the dying woman.
"I am glad to hear that Mum…", cough, "…know that I will always love you…", cough, "…and nothing you have done in the past or what you will…", cough, "…do in the future will change that. Promise me you'll help my family through their…", cough, "…grief before you move on. Please", Bella whispers.
"I promise", Esme says sadly.
"You know you were a…", cough, "…better Mother then Renee was…", she coughs, "…but I loved you both the same. I swear a vow to you in return…", cough, "…when I pass, I will give one spiecal boy a hug for you and…", cough, "…look after him to you eventually join us…", cough, "…which I hope is a long way off", Bella tells her.
Esme sobs, "Thank you my daughter. I love you so, so much. I hope you are reunited with your husband and daughter when you leave us"
"I love you too Mum", Bella whispers.
Esme kisses her forehead as Carlisle's hand replaces hers.
"My beloved daughter", Carlisle says to her love and sadness in his eyes.
"Hey Dad", Bella coughs, "…I am sorry you have to be the one…", cough, "…to officially declare me dead", cough, "…please forgive me"
"Always daughter. And I would rather be at your side and offer all the comfort I can before you leave us for the last time", Carlisle replies, "And no matter where you are you will ALWAYS be my daughter who I will always love, remember and cherish my memories of you"
"As I you", Bella whispers, "Dad you are the best Father…", cough, "…anyone can ask for. You raised 6 no 7 amazing children…", cough, "…you have the best wife and there is no…", cough, "…other doctor I trust more then you…", cough, "…promise me something Dad"
"What?" Carlisle asks gently squeezing her hand.
"Never lose your compassion…", cough, "…you compassion is life's greatest treasure and weapon. So, promise me…", cough, "…to never lose it and always remember me and the humanity I bought to all of you", she coughs.
"I swear. I love you, my daughter. Be at peace with your family that has gone before you. And know the Cullen's will always watch over your earthly family", Carlisle says to her kindly.
"My eternal thanks Dad. And I vow to what over you the same…", cough, "…from my place next to my Jack"
"We will be deeply honoured", Carlisle replies.
Bella then turns to Edward. Whose hand had never left hers.
"Edward", Bella rasps with a smile.
"Please don't leave Bella. I know I don't love you like I used too and left you behind. But please don't leave us", Edward begs.
"I am sorry…now it is my turn to leave…", cough, "…Edward as I said to the others, I thank you for leaving…", cough, "…me. Best decision you have made besides from accepting Eliza here", Bella says with a weak smile, "…I have lived my human life my brother…", cough, "…now I must go where all of us must go in the end…", Bella says.
"We won't…"
"Yes, you will!" Bella's voice becoming firm, "I WILL see you again one day…", cough, "…one day long down the line. And I want you to swear brother…", cough, "…promise me to live your life, not waste it by doing something stupid, not to wallow in grief for me…", cough, "…and vow never to leave Eliza"
Edward's eyes looked at her tenderly.
"I swear to you what you asked will be met", Edward chokes out.
"That makes me happy brother. Know even…", cough, "…even through we didn't work out. I love…", cough, "…love you like an elder brother and will pass into the…", cough, "…next world with fond memories of you"
"Bella you are one of the best sisters I could ever ask for. I swear your family will want for nothing as long as I exist your family bloodline will be cared and protected for", Edward vows.
Everyone was basically crying with their goodbyes.
Jasper pushes out calm to his family trying to help ease their pain.
"Don't dwell on me my dears…", cough, "…for soon I'll be in my husbands embrace…", cough, "…live well…live say…", cough, "…look after each other…", cough, "…and you'll get through this. I…", cough, "…I know you can. I have always…", cough, "…believed in all of your…", cough, "…and I will continue to do so. And know I will always…", cough, "…always be watching out for you and when you need…", cough, "…need me the most I'll be there…", cough, "…even through you can't seem me", Bella tells the first real family she had ever had.
They give her looks of love and understanding.
"You saved us Bella. You didn't know it but you did. We were floundering. But you fixed us. Twice. And we could never thank you enough. We hope you know just how much you mean to us and just how much we owe you", Carlisle tells her.
"No, it is I who owes you", Bella whispers closing her eyes.
"Bella let me make you feel just how much you mean to us", Jasper offers her.
She opens her eyes briefly.
"Do it"
So much love loved into her body and Bella smiles serenely. This was something she would always treasure in her next life.
She closes her eyes drifting off with the feelings of her family flowing through her.
They thought she had passed but they heard her heart still beating. She must be exhausted with her goodbyes to them...
The next two days past by with small talks between Bella and her Children, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. The family trying to spend as much time with Bella as they could before she passed and they had allowed the Cullen's to join them. Considering them extended family.
Bella was in and out of conscious and her heart beat was fading. But Jasper kept feeding her the love of both families into her. Helping ease what little pain she was in.
Watching Bella as she faded was one of the most painful things the Cullen's had ever done. Including going through the change. As they had no way to help her. All they could do is sit back and watch as she breathed her last.
At 11.30pm on New Years Eve of the year 2085 she said her last words of love to them all and making them promise to take care of each other.
At 11.59, Bella's eyes focus on theirs for the last time. She gives them a comforting smile as her body relaxes.
"Jack", she whispers so quietly that they nearly missed it.
At 00.01 am on New Years Day of 2086 Isabella Marie Jameson, once upon a time Isabella Marie Swan, a girl who ran with Vampires and Shape-Shifters alike, a woman who found family in a coven of Vegetarian Vampires and the one to give them their humanity back, at the age of 98 breathed her last breath and past peacefully surrounded by her family into the next life.
With many, many legacies being left behind and to the Cullen's leaving a piece of herself in each of them to remind them of a life well lived and taking a piece of them with her into the next life…
Epilogue…
Bella saw Jack. Her Jack reaching for her smiling at her with adoration.
"My Bella", he says lovingly, "At last"
"Jack", she says not even realising she had left her old body behind and standing before her husband in the body she married him in.
Jack pulls her into a fierce kiss. Full of passion and everything he had in him from their 5 years apart.
"Finally, together again", he says planting kisses all over her face making her young laughter echo around them once again.
"Oh how I have missed you my heart", Bella replies, "You don't know just how much"
"Oh, I believe you do. Now come my love others are waiting for you", Jack says to her holding out his hand for her to grasp and follow him into the bright heavenly light.
It only took one blink to see the people waiting for her.
Angela and Ben.
Jessica and Mike.
Tyler and Katie.
Eric and Sally.
Jacob Black and Leah Clearwater.
Sam and Emily Uley.
The rest of the pack.
Her parents Charlie and his wife her stepmother Sue Clearwater.
Her parents Renee and Phil Dwyer.

And her beloved daughter Leanne Laura.
They had rushed to greet her as she sobbed two words.
"I'm home"
