Historia Shoukan Chapter 12
Pressure from the North
Date: October 28th, HS 2069/CC 1639
Location: Nankaigan, Higan Territory, Chigoku Region, Historia Shoukan Dominion, Zeroth Civilization Area
Several GUF Wyvern and Dragon Divisions can be seen training. Kasen Ibaraki, Oni Sage of Gensokyo and General of GUF Draco Corps, is supervising it since the Alliance would expect Parpaldians to use their wyvern units to the fullest should both of them are at war with each other. Qua-Toyne and Louria also send their elite wyvern units while the captured Parpaldian Wyvern Lord unit are forced to participate, partly to intimidate them and partly to show them why Historia Shoukan Dominion is considered as leading power of Zeroth Civilization Area.
Not only that, even large number of riders from several UNM Dragon Corps also join as well. If the quality of GUF Draco Corps didn't deter the Parpaldians (since half of the group got ambushed), then the sheer number of what UNM can throw will surely pummel whatever pride they have. The reason for this is none other than Rashomon, GUF Ancient Flame Dragon, deeming Reckmeyer worthy.
Gensokyo Union Fighters and United Nations Military are the leading Superpowers of Historia Alliance, and the only one with Inter-Dimensional Travel capabilities. Both of them have a 'Protectorate', which further proves their immense influence in the Alliance. Gensokyo Union Fighters are the masters of aerial warfare and the experts of ranged combat. Their expertise in both aspects are what prompts United Nations Military to join Sengoku Gensokyo after Earth-Gensokyo Reunification in 2020, shortly after WW3 ends.
Mind you, this happened before GUF and UNM were formed (2032 and 2040 respectively).
Here is what Iseya, UNM Grand Marshal, have to say about Gensokyo, and by proxy, GUF.
"Even with our technology adaptability rate, resources, and manpower that we managed to acquire after all these decades from multiple worlds, we can't defeat Gensokyans when it comes to aerial warfare. Their extensive use of aerial infantries that can carry ground weapons only reinforce my assessment. Hence why, UN forces will cooperate with Gensokyo and improve our doctrines with their help. Gensokyo have centuries of head start and knew the nature of the air. It's only after UNM managed to acquire Strangereal aviation technologies that we became equal."
During the next period, the Alliance continue with ground tactics while Kasen talks with her fellow Sages: Yukari, Yuyuko, Okina, Yuuka, and Kyomu.
"Did the Shadow Division have any updates from Parpaldia Empire?"
"Yes, Ibaraki. Anbu found out that Parpaldia decided to threaten Altaras, who have assets from the Alliance. Most likely, their target is Le Brias."
"Isn't that where Narusaka's group are located currently, Saigyouji?"
"That's what I thought. Altaras have a lot of magic gem deposits that Parpaldia intend to exploit. One particular site of interest is Siltras Mine, which houses Altarans' largest deposit."
"Which means the confrontation with Parpaldia is inevitable, Kazami."
"That's what all of us expect as well, Yakumo."
"From the Aincrads' account, Parpaldia treats the Alliance as barbarian nation while being ignorant of our technology and strength. Only because we created 'Zeroth Civilization Area.' Bad move for them, right Kuroshin'en?"
"Well, they've been constantly at war for most of their life. Other KVL Divisions even able to gain more intel from their colonies, Matara."
"For real...? *sigh* We never consider them or any states outside Historia Alliance's jurisdiction as barbarians. For note, we actually rescued Fighters from Puella Magi and Kawahara Dimensions because we recognize their capability and growth potential. Despite us being the leading force in the Alliance, we shouldn't flaunt our strength aside from war games. It will seriously harm our reputation to other Alliance members. Gensokyo may be the masters of aerial warfare, but Earth have countless war experiences. Plus, both Moon and Mars have space fleets. Lastly, HMF have Faciendi metalii. In short, all of Alliance Superpowers have something we're good at, and we're stronger together."
"If the war does break out, what will happen?"
"According to Zen Captain, Altaras Chronosphere has been fully completed. Grand Marshal even mobilized several Chrono Legionnaires to guard the Alliance FOB and help the ensuing resistance with weapon supplies."
"I see... Can we threaten them, then?"
"No. The Sugakus already have a plan for the Parpaldians. We will see it soon."
The Alliance then resumes the dragon maneuver training.
Location: Le Brias, Altaras Kingdom, Zeroth Civilization Area
Place: Athenall Castle
Altaras is an island kingdom situated in the seas south of Philades Continent and Third Civilization Area. Home to 20 million people, this Zeroth Civilization Area nation boasts national power on a scale beyond that of those from the same area (barring Historia and Gra Valkas). With its temperate climate all-year round, the structures in the capital adopted a design based on circles to adapt to the climate with positive effects. The gentle nature of the population is a symbol of pride for the nation. As a possessor of magic gem mines, the nation made itself wealthy off of exporting its resources, with 700,000 people living in capital Le Brias enjoying vigorous lifestyles. However, beneath all of the liveliness in the capital, in Athenall royal castle, King Taara XIV clutched his head in frustration. He looks at the letter in his hands with an expression filled with anguish. Detailed in the letter is a request from Parpaldia Empire.
"Are they... serious?"
The Empire does send them requests every year, but this one is only a request in name and is basically an order. Furthermore, this time, the contents in the letter were impossible to the point he wants to suspect it to be a mistake on his part.
- Give Siltras Mine to the Empire
- Send Princess Lumies as a slave to the Empire
- Fulfill these requests within two weeks
At the bottom of the letter was written: "As much as possible, we don't want to use force."
"This is impossible..."
After the death of the previous emperor, Emperor Ludius immediately ascended to the throne. Pushing forth the Empire's territorial expansion and raising of national power, he heard that he has pressed other nations to secede territories to the Empire. However in many cases, the lands that are normally seceded over to the empire are safe and the deals are beneficial to both sides on paper.
'So what is up with this one?! This is anything but beneficial to us!'
Siltras Mine is Altaras' biggest magic gem mine and is the centerpiece that holds up the Kingdom's economy. The deposits of the mine is enough to put it in the world's top five. If they lose the mine, Altaras' power would diminish greatly. As for sending the princess as a slave, one could only see this term as something to anger the citizens of Altaras. In other words, this letter only seems to serve as a preamble to pulling them into war in the first place.
'But why... Their requests have always been humiliating but they were always within reason. That's why we've always maintained a friendly relationship albeit on the surface... Now they're taking it back with this 'request'... So the emperor has sinister designs after all...'
Taara XIV decided to visit Parpaldia Empire's 3rd Foreign Affairs Office's sub-branch in Le Brias to verify the truth.
Place: Parpaldian 3rd Foreign Affairs Office Altaras sub-branch
Three people are enjoying the sweets at the nearby café. They went to Altaras Kingdom based on decision from GUF Zen Captain himself. Near the Office branch, they saw a royal carriage escorted by the guards stopping at in front of the branch.
"Kirito, why don't we go in? It's better if we listen to them carefully, right?"
"We won't need to do that, Yuuki. Several hidden devices are installed in that office. It should be more than enough to discern what's going on inside."
"So, this means we will move to the next operation once they end their talks."
The SAO Veterans are one of the earliest Outsiders group that are being contacted by Gensokyo shortly after the end of Lunarian Invasion in 2015. Due to the prevalence of VRMMORPGs in Kawahara Dimension (SAO Veterans' home dimension), they became tech experts by trade. Their leader, however, is in another level. The fact that Kazuto (online name Kirito) is also a very skilled hacker is what made Gensokyo noticed him and his group.
"Still, I never thought that my actual expertise aside from fighting prowess will be crucial for the fate of Altaras..."
"I certainly didn't expect you to be very skilled with computers..."
"Well, I did build my own computer..."
"Kirito-kun, Yuuki, it's about to begin."
"Got it, Asuna."
They then look at the laptop screen that shows the office before moving to the next phase of the operation.
Altaras sub-branch's building is different from Altaran structures next to it with elegance and opulence felt down to the detail in accordance with the breadth of the Empire's national power. It possessed a magnificence reminiscent of the house of a feudal lord but it is ultimately still a government office for foreign affairs-an embassy, if you will. Together with his diplomats, Taara XIV walked through the innards of the building as he was guided by staff. Despite the fact that the Altaran king himself had come, there wasn't much of a fuss inside the building.
"I've been waiting, Taara XIV!"
Once the doors to the ambassador's office opened, Parpaldian Ambassador to Altaras, Kurst, called on to the king as he sat pretentiously on his chair with his legs crossed. On the other hand, Taara remained standing as the only other place to sit was the sofa on the corner. It actually seemed as if there used to be a chair but they took it out beforehand. One part of the floor was visibly different in color from the rest.
'How disrespectful...'
Returning the disrespect, Altaran diplomats began to talk without the necessary greetings.
"We've come to inquire regarding your true intentions behind that letter."
"But it's just as it says?"
Kurst raised both his hands up as if asking "what other meanings should it have?" to provoke the Altarans.
"Siltras is our kingdom's biggest mine."
"So? You have other mines. What about them? Oh? Are you trying to go against His Majesty, Ludius?"
With Kurst showing a vulgar expression on his face, Taara XIV finally frowned.
"We are not... However, couldn't there be other ways?"
"No!"
Kurst raised his voice. Taara XIV, who had been silent all this time, told his diplomats to back down, and approached Kurst.
"Then why the request regarding my daughter, Lumies?"
"Oh that. Lumies is quite the stunner, isn't she? It's so that I can sample her."
"What the-?!"
Kazuto, Asuna, and Yuuki widens their eyes in shock. This Kurst seriously reminds them of Alberich (Nobuyuki Sugou). If the Outsiders' Leaders, Yasei and Lucy, were here, they would frown instead.
(AN: Yep, Yuuki Konno is alive and well here.)
One thing is for sure, that Chronosphere will be used sooner than expected.
"Huh?"
Taara XIV and his diplomats were all taken aback by the unbelievable reply they received. While he may be an ambassador, he still gave out the highest insult possible to a royal.
"I wanted to see if she fits my taste. Well, once I grow tired of her, I'll just sell her off to a brothel."
Anger welled up within the king. This was no longer a talk between two countries.
"... Is that also the will of Emperor Ludius?"
"Huh?! What's with that defiant attitude?! As an ambassador, my will is His Majesty's will! You barbarians just open your mouth towards anyone you see fit!"
Taara XIV turned around without saying a word.
"Oi! We're not done yet!"
The diplomats opened the doors of the office, prompting the king to leave the room. In the midst of all that, Kurst continued to hurl insults at the king.
"Don't you dare ignore me, barbarian king!"
The king left the room as his diplomats closed the door behind them.
Just few seconds later, Kazuto immediately contacted Yasei.
"Captain, this might sound sudden. But I'm going to request an assassination."
"I take that the Parpaldian ambassador irked both you guys and Altarans so much that you asked me this, then?"
"... Yes. If possible, I want Shiota to be the one to end him."
"Got it. I'll relay that to Ansatsu group."
Turns out, Kurst's conduct is repulsing enough for Kazuto to actually request Yasei to send Nagisa Shiota to assassinate him.
Since Altaras Kingdom have established diplomatic relationship with Historia, SAO group can afford to ask for such thing. Ansatsu group are being briefed about what Kazuto reported and immediately gear themselves to take out the Parpaldian ambassador. Currently, they're waiting.
"Okay, let's move out."
After listening to the conversation, Kazuto, Asuna, and Yuuki then move to the next phase of the operation. Their mission now is to evacuate King Taara XIV and Princess Lumies to the mainland of Historia.
The only thing preventing the Alliance from directly helping Altaras should Parpaldia start their invasion is the fact that they aren't a member of Defense Council.
The Alliance will wait until Parpaldia Empire make the first move, or after KVL Shadow Division acquired a new intel from mainland Parpaldia. In preparation for the evacuation, the Alliance managed to clone the Altaran King, and they'll proceed with the mission once the invasion starts.
Place: Athenall Castle, Throne Room
"Send that idiot ambassador back to the Empire! No need for an official reply from me to that request! Have the ministry write clearly that 'we're severing diplomatic ties with the Empire' and send it with that ambassador! Freeze the empire's assets here as well!"
"Of course!"
Unable to contain his anger, the king summoned all of his civil and military officials and howled orders one after the other. Even the parliamentary officials, who have already heard of the ambassador's attitude and the request letter, were enraged. They who are firmly devoted to the royal family were overflowing with resolute conviction to fight to the end, even against a Superpower.
"Convene all of the military and strengthen the capital's defense! Gather all of the reserve troops! The Oversight Army will come! Let's show Parpaldia Empire our pride!"
If they suck up to the humiliating terms, they would no longer be a Kingdom. To preserve their dignity as a Kingdom, they must reject such terms. After they've attacked the Oversight Army and showed them their strength and will, they could only see an early reconciliation with the Empire as the means for them to survive. Fortunately, since Altaras is a rich kingdom, the skill and equipment of their military is on the level of one from the civilized areas. If their foe is indeed the Oversight Army, which is comparatively weaker to their principal army, they should be able to put up a fight. As the king looked at the horizon dyed bright red by the setting sun, his resolve to land at least one hit against the Empire strengthened.
Date: November 4th, HS 2069/CC 1639
Location: Eshtirant, Parpaldia Empire, Third Civilization Area
Place: Paradis Castle
Parpaldia Empire is the sole Superpower in Third Civilization Area. Its capital, Esthirant, is undoubtedly the most prosperous city in the eastern civilized areas. That's what the merchants and citizens of other nations visiting the city may be thinking. "What an amazing city!" "How rich these people must be!" "So beautiful!" and other impressions. At the northern end of the city stood the Imperial Palace of Paradis where Emperor Ludius resided. To showcase their majesty, columns etched with fine sculpting and engravings stood on the palace grounds, further overwhelming any who saw them. Then, there was the vivid and elegantly maintained garden that made one think that they were in heaven.
The interior of the palace was lavishly decorated with gold and silver jewels. These were not only found on the frames of paintings but they were also finely crafted into the handles of doors. The floor was made out of highly polished marble with a spread out thick, scarlet carpet over it and magical lanterns adorn the silver candlesticks on the walls. The windows were made with colorless and transparent glass still valued highly in Third Civilization Area. The palace was designed in a way such that there weren't any dark places. It was as if the entire palace itself was an exhibition hall for all of the world's treasures. Ambassadors and kings from all around without exception find themselves at a loss for words in excessive admiration. "They must have high national power!" or so they thought.
Kneeling before the Imperial Throne was one man.
"Rise."
That man, the 3rd Foreign Affairs Office Director, Kaios, raised his head as sweat dropped in droves from his pores. At the end of his vision was the young Emperor Ludius, whose immense power would make anyone doubt that he was only 27.
"How is your report on the incident regarding the Oversight Army sent to punish Fenn?"
"Ah, yes... I'm truly sorry that I have not reported on the deployment of the Oversig-"
"Silence!"
"!"
Ludius howled at Kaios's apology, which detracted from the point in question.
"I don't care that you didn't report to me the deployment! That's within the rights of the 3rd Foreign Affairs Office which I myself recognize! If I received all details regarding reports on attacks made on barbaric countries, then my day would be over. The problem is... their defeat."
Sweat poured down from Kaios's face like a waterfall. He wanted to hide it, but it didn't go his way. The origin of this information is obviously the 1st Foreign Affairs Office. He himself already knew that the 3rd Foreign Affairs Office has concealed the loss of the Oversight Army and that the National Strategy Bureau had a hand in the war initiated by Louria.
"Where did we go wrong? Did Fenn do it?"
"My subordinates are currently weeding out the country in question but according to our current investigation, we have surmised that it was a country from outside the civilized areas. However, since the results are still not clear, I've decided that we still couldn't report it and I haven't."
"So you still don't know..."
The Emperor's face welled up with anger. However, Kaios's excuse makes sense. The delay of the report is a blunder, but it'd be meaningless if the contents of the report isn't clear. Somewhat understanding this, Ludius's manners softened.
"Even though it was mostly old ships, it's surprising that an uncivilized nation would be the ones to soil our Empire. They should take responsibility for that. Teach them what it means to go against the Empire."
"Understood."
Kaios bowed deeply.
"Just by seeing the results of the fight, every nation would see that the Empire has lost to a country like Fenn. As soon as you ascertain the nation that went against us, send our regular forces and crush them along with Fenn. Do you understand?"
"Absolutely! Your Majesty, there's one more thing that I would like to report."
"What is it?"
"It's about Altaras Kingdom. They have refused to hand over Siltras Mine just as expected. Our ambassador nailed it."
"Hm. Splendid."
A grin surfaced on Ludius's face as he made no effort to hide his ruthlessness.
"Additionally, they have frozen our assets in their nation and have cut off ties with us. What do you wish to do?"
"Oh? For them to show their objection so straightforwardly... It's just as we planned but they're even more pissed. We've underestimated them."
Saying that, Ludius was rather pleased. In his strategies, he has already considered adding Altaras to the roster of territories under the Empire.
"Send the regulars to Altaras. The Imperial forces are ready, right?"
Ludius asked the man clad in ceremonial military dress standing next to him. The man was a messenger for the Imperial military. Ludius's orders would promptly go through him to the commanders in the military.
"Once there's an order from Your Majesty, the military can set out. We will wipe out Altaras Kingdom and give all of the mines in the Kingdom to Your Majesty!"
"I see. Do it. Don't needlessly kill off any civilians as they are a valuable workforce. As for you, Kaios, send a letter to the Altarans. I'll leave the details to you."
"Of course!"
Around five days later, the Superpower Parpaldia Empire declared war on Altaras Kingdom.
Unknown to them, this conversation has been captured by KVL Shadow Division and are being sent to the Alliance.
Date: November 13th, HS 2069/CC 1639
Location: Le Brias, Altaras Kingdom, Zeroth Civilization Area
SAO group received a transmission from KVL Shadow Division about the recent movements from Parpaldia and the next course of action.
"Parpaldian Imperial fleet have left the mainland four days ago. We confirmed it as the direct follow-up of their declaration of war to Altaras. As it turns out, that debacle back then is in fact, a pretext for this."
"When will they be arriving?"
"At least within two days."
"Thanks for the update. We'll inform Altaran royal family about this."
They then immediately went to Athenall Castle to report the impending war with Parpaldia Empire.
Place: Athenall Castle
King Taara XIV summoned his daughter Princess Lumies to his quarters.
"Father? It is I, Lumies."
Hearing the voice of his daughter, Taara almost jumped as he ran over to her. Holding his daughter's shoulders, he said in a deep voice.
"Lumies. Your escorts are here. While it's still early, escape from the capital."
Impatience was visible on the king's face.
"Why?"
"Parpaldia Empire has declared war on us... Do you understand what that means? What's going to come is not their Oversight Army, but their true military. State-of-the-art equipment and overwhelming numbers will come to attack us."
Lumies shook at her father's words. She was young but clever and she works publicly as a diplomat. She understood very well that the power of the Empire's regular forces which every nation knew of was enough to sweep clear Altaras with ease. However, she who loved her kingdom and people adamantly refused to leave.
"For the princess to abandon her people and leave... It will be detrimental to the name of the house, which has aided the people through so much!"
"Considering the difference in national power, we will surely lose. They will execute every member of the royal family. Lumies... If you are ever caught, you will experience hell. It'll be fine, so go and run! The people will surely come to understand."
The determination to die was etched onto the king's face.
"But..."
"I have failed this Kingdom as its king. To let you go as your father... Still, you are my precious daughter that your mother left me. As your father, I cannot let you, a living testament to our line, die. Do as your father says now."
Taara showed her his kindest face. Even as he resigns himself from the duties of the royal family, he still wants to save his daughter. Acknowledging his strong will, Lumies nodded as she cried.
"U-Understood..."
Taara then looks to escorts that are currently inside the castle.
"I take that this is your choice, Your Majesty?"
The one who speak right now is Kazuto Narusaka, the leader of SAO Veterans. He and his group are responsible for monitoring Altaras after the diplomatic failure with Parpaldia. King Taara XIV and Princess Lumies appreciated their help for opening the diplomatic relationship with Historia and increasing Altaras' military strength. And as expected, Kazuto is accompanied by Asuna and Yuuki.
*sigh* "Yes. You surely know what Parpaldian will do to our royal lineage when they won."
"... Indeed. Fenn Kingdom already told us."
Kazuto then remembered a special directive for the current operation.
"Actually, we're going to introduce you to the troops that will make sure that Altaras will have a beacon of hope, even as Parpaldia Empire ravage your lands. Remember the land near Le Brias?"
"T-troops?!"
This is unexpected for both Altaran royalty. While the Alliance said they can't help Altaras in the case of war, nothing said that they can't place troops in their FOB.
"I see... May I see what kind of troops are being assigned in that land?"
Asuna is the one who speaks next. She's the vice leader of SAO Veterans from Kawahara Dimension.
"You may, Your Majesty. However, the Alliance specifically orders these troops to only defend that land and the airport. This is the furthest extent they can do without breaching Altaras' national integrity. But, if necessary, I'm sure we can arrange for Altaras to enter the Defense Council later. Despite the imminent fall of the Kingdom, as long as both of you are still alive, Altaras will still have a government-in-exile."
"I cannot abandon this Kingdom."
Kazuto nods in understanding before then speaking about the revised plan for the evacuation.
"I'm aware about it, Your Majesty. Hence why we've prepared this. The Alliance knew full well about your desire to lead your troops. Asuna, call in the Chrono Legion."
"Okay, Kirito."
Asuna then signals few Chrono Legionnaires garrisoned in Altaras FOB to teleport straight to Athenall Castle. She also instructed then to bring the clone.
"Already here."
Immediately, two Chrono Legionnaires appeared in front of Taara XIV and Lumies with the former's clone. Both of them look at the perfectly-cloned body. Nobody will notice that the real one is still alive should the clone is dead.
"H-How did you...?"
"This is what the Alliance came up with. This clone will share the memory with His Majesty. And since he already saw Your Majesty, you will be able to lead your forces with mental and visual link while we're leaving the premises. For this evacuation, we'll use the vessel you've prepared for Her Highness' original evacuation plan, Your Majesty.
"All right. I believe in you."
Seeing a glimmer of hope for the aid that will be given by Historia once Altaras enters the Defense Council, Taara XIV and Lumies agreed to Historia Alliance's evacuation plan.
That night, King Taara XIV and Princess Lumies boarded a ship disguised as a merchant ship together with several dozen knights and servants. They left the Kingdom alongside SAO Veterans. Their destination was Maihark where they will be extracted by Historia with a Voyager Transport.
Date: November 15th, HS 2069/CC 1639
Location: Altaran Northern Sea
Place: Parpaldian Imperial Navy
The sky was amazingly clear and blue. Fluffy cumulonimbus clouds like those from the southern lands unfurl in many directions and there hardly blows any wind. Seagulls rest on the ocean surface with their wings furled as they go about carefreely. It was in this scenery that several ships drew white wakes on the ocean surface as they proceeded southwards. These were the 350 ships of the Parpaldia Imperial Navy. 220 of them were 100-gun ships of the line, 15 were dragon carriers, and 115 were landing ships that carried land dragons, horses, and the rest of the Imperial Army. For their airpower, each dragon carrier came with a complement of 20 wyvern lords. In the Third Civilization Area east of the Central World, it was a force with overwhelming power that cannot be emulated by anyone else. To crush the Altarans, the military has sent out its main fleet. Standing on top of the poop deck of the flagship Shirant was the commander Sius with an expression that reinforced comments on how he was a cold-blooded and merciless tactician. There, he stared at the glistening sea.
"We will soon enter the range of Altaran wyverns."
His navigation officer reported.
"They're still nowhere to be found... Once you see disturbances in the anti-air magic signature sensors, send out 100 of our wyvern lords from the carriers and put them in a state of alert above the fleet. We will take the defensive in this operation so don't let any enemies get close to the fleet! Have them follow their respective squadron commanders! Also, don't let them get too far from the fleet!"
No matter what species of dragon it is, they will always utilize magic particles, which is energy based on the usage of magic, to fly. If there are disturbances on the anti-air magic signature sensors, which were developed to detect wyverns outside visual range, they would then send up wyvern lord units to patrol the skies above the fleet.
As for the Altaran navy, they have already moved into position some 35 km ahead of the Imperial Navy to a distance where they could be seen directly. However, since there was still some distance between them, there was still some time before they'd enter combat. The Parpaldians knew that their foes have no dragon carriers, so it was likely that they'd send wyverns directly from their mainland.
Sius intends to inflict maximum results with the lowest possible casualties. For this, he doesn't look down on his foes. He continues to stare far off into the distance; beyond the swaying silhouettes of his foes.
Place: Altaran Royal Navy
"Damned locusts! Trying to usurp our kingdom…"
Altaran Navy commander Bordo spat with a hint of anger. On the vast horizon, he could see several ships which he surmised to be from Parpaldian Navy. Usually, they'd fear them to the point of losing the will to fight. However, the riches they get from the magic mines weren't for show. Generations of Altarans before him have imagined the empire as their enemy and so have strengthened their forces. If a nation has no ability to produce weapons, then they will be charged exorbitant prices by civilized nations and superpowers if they wish to buy from them. In Altaras, they don't just settle for the production and trade of magic gems but they also research the weapons of the superpowers, enabling them to develop their own weapons which are reasonably cheaper. Depending on the price competition, they can also import importable weapons at a reasonable price.
Furthermore, they also import Tears of the Wind God, which are made from Altaran produced magic gems that were refined in the civilized areas. Altaran sail ships can therefore utilize plenty of these devices to accelerate to speed. They also have their own weapons which they were able to prepare due to their riches. Based on this, while Altaras is a Zeroth Civilization Area nation, the scope of their military is on the level of a strong country from the civilized areas. As such, they will not be defeated so easily. If their foe was a nation from Zeroth Civilization Area, barring Historia and Gra Valkas, the fight may go well to their benefit.
"Commander Bordo! The Imperial Navy has entered our wyverns' combat radius! Our wyverns are now coming from behind us!"
"Good! Send them all in as we attack their ships! Our objective is to sink the dragon carrier! Their Wyvern Lords will come, so it's best not for our wyverns to engage them one on one! Have them corner one and attack it! Rinse and repeat!"
Bordo took the manacomms and sent out orders to the fleet.
"Our fleet will soon enter into battle! All hands to their stations! Ya hear?! The destiny of our Kingdom lies in this battle! Everyone prepare for battle!"
Place: Altaras Paradox Engine (AN: Already?!)
Above them, a single Paradox Engine from UNM is flying above Altaras and has activated its Mirage stealth system to avoid both visual and radar detection. Escorting it are two Super Thor Gunships that took position to record the invasion and assessing Altaras military's readiness to face the invasion of Parpaldia.
The Paradox Engine crews checked the battlefield control and examines their weaponry and systems while keeping contact with the Super Thor Gunships.
"Looks like they put our donated weapons to good use."
"What makes you think of that, Captain?"
"I'd say they're a cautious country if they actually bother to create their own weapons."
"At least they're aware about Parpaldia's constant pressures. Speaking of which, how's their manpower?"
"Intel from the Union states that they probably have less than 50,000 personnel. And they also can't mobilize their entire troops in time."
"Wow... Isn't that... a little too few?"
"Well... Compared to Fenn Kingdom which can conscript their entire population barring the kids whenever they're expecting a crisis, I'd say that's underwhelming. Altaras might not prepare very well for Parpaldian invasion."
"Don't compare Altaras with Fenn. The latter is where the citizens are trained to use weapons as means of survival, just like how Gensokyo maintains their readiness. Practically everyone in the Union already got combat experience."
"True enough."
The Paradox Engine continue to fly above and the Super Thor Gunships reports the start of the engagement.
"Parpaldian Wyvern Lords are going higher."
"Wait... Don't tell me...!"
Looking at the sun and where Parpaldia Empire Wyvern Lords go, the crew immediately realized it.
"Using sun as the cover... They're smart."
Looking at the battlefield, it would seem that Altaran wyvern riders wouldn't even think of such tactic. This will be part of the report where the Alliance will conduct joint training with the Defense Council countries at Nankaigan Region, Rodenius Continent, and Altaras Kingdom in the future.
Place: Altaran Dragon Knight Unit
Leading a force of 120 wyverns, wyvern unit commander Zaram of the Northern Coast Garrison flew in formation just behind Altaran Navy to strike the main fleet of Parpaldian Navy to the northeast. Having demanded countless humiliating terms from the Kingdom, the enemy were no more than vicious, unjust bandits. Many times they've followed them anyways but this time they demanded Siltras Mine and the Princess as a slave. When they publicized the letter sent by Parpaldians, the citizens went into a rage. If they lose Siltras Mine, the people will starve. The princess too loved the people and is a wonderful person. Popular with the citizens, she also has their hearts. With Parpaldians trying to take these two things away, it was apparent that the Empire was trying to crush the Kingdom.
"Even if the Kingdom were to be ruined, we will land an attack on such a tyrannical Superpower!"
Fueled with rage, the citizens endorsed the king's decision. Receiving orders from the coastal control towers and from the Navy HQ, Zaram took off with haste. Then...
"I see them."
Parpaldian fleet entered their sight. As expected of the main fleet of a Superpower-it was a massive fleet the likes of which they've never seen before. Had they not been enemies, it would have been a grand spectacle.
"Spread out, just as ordered! Keep tabs on what the observers say and stay within your attack waves! Do as your unit commanders tell you to!"
Altaran Dragon Knights split up and headed for Parpaldian Navy's main fleet. However, they couldn't spot the supporting Wyvern Lord units anywhere. Then, Zaram noticed.
"?! Above us!"
Them flying at a low altitude so as to not appear on anti-air magic signature sensors doomed them as the enemy dragon knights swooped down from the cumulonimbus clouds and onto them.
"Behind us! They're attacking at an angle! They're coming from the direction of the sun! Evasive actions!"
Enemy wyverns pouring out from a break in the clouds attacked in a line with the sun behind them. With their eyesight blinded by the sun, it was only natural that they didn't see them. Those who were listening in on the manacomms immediately broke formation. The Wyvern Lords dived at exceptional speed, shooting their magic flame bullets as they passed by their targets and swooping down below them. They were much faster than their wyvern counterparts manned by Altaran dragon knights, who couldn't evade in time. The flame bullets from the Wyvern Lords, having been hurled with conjecture as to the Altarans' movements, flew in an accurate parabola. Altaran wyverns, as if being swallowed by the flame bullets, were hit directly one by one. With this one attack, more than 60 of the 120 Altaran dragon knights were shot down.
"Fuck!"
They tried to get back at the enemy Wyvern Lords, but the speed difference was so great that they couldn't chase after them. On the contrary, the enemy flew back around them and showered their now open backs with direct hits from their flame bullets. The enemy Wyvern Lords, which escaped out of range of the magic flame bullets of Altaran wyverns, climbed up at an altitude higher than a wyvern and once again launched magic flame bullets from advantageous positions. Lamenting the succeeding loss of his subordinates, Zaram himself was then engulfed in flames in no time.
In about 30 minutes after Altaran dragon knights encountered Parpaldian dragon knights, they were helplessly annihilated. The Imperial Wyvern Lord units suffered zero casualties.
Place: Altaran Royal Navy
"That was fast... They're already annihilated…"
Not showing a hint of anxiety to his subordinates, navy commander Bordo was actually worried deep in his heart.
"Enemy fleet is now two kilometers from us!"
One of the lookouts reported.
"Enemy fleet is turning!"
The line of warships turned their rudders to get to the side of the Altaran fleet.
"Don't tell me... The Imperial magic cannons can already reach us?!"
Faint flashes of magic lined up on the hulls of the warships. After the successive flashes of light, smoke emerged from a part of the enemy fleet. After a short delay, heavy sounds of gunfire echoed throughout the vicinity.
"This is bad!"
The Imperial main fleet was a massive one, numbering in three digit range. If they are to be completely surrounded, they will have nowhere to run and it will be a free for all. Above all, there was still a kilometer left before they could enter the range of their own magic cannons. Speed also seemed to favor the Parpaldians. That was how it's supposed to be. The massive cannons of the Altaran fleet are old, similar to the one fielded by Fenn. No matter how many they import from the civilized region, they were originally developed by Parpaldia. The technologies given by the empire to its surrounding states are about 10 to 30 years behind the latest technologies they field. That was also the case with their Tears of the Wind God.
'At this rate, we will be annihilated before we get into our own gun range!'
Anticipating the worst, Bordo immediately issued orders. As long as they're inferior in capabilities, they must fight to the end.
"Hard to starboard! Take us to 45 degrees from the enemy fleet and maintain the most optimum angle for attack while we get closer! Their explosive rounds are coming! Prepare the Arrows of the Wind God!"
The Altaran fleet slowly turned. Considering that the enemy's shells were coming, their speed was frustratingly slow. Finally, sounds of explosions were followed by columns of water rising from the ocean surface.
Boom!
The enemy's first attack wave has landed. Sounds of explosions and something breaking up irregularly echoed.
Boom… Boom… Boom…
The sounds of something breaking up were clearly different from the explosions hitting the water, prompting the Altaran soldiers to cover their ears.
"Ship of the line Cidy is hit!"
Enemy shells hit the ship of the line Cidy and cause intense explosions.
'So these are the explosive shells from the rumors?!'
Guns, ammunition, range, power, and numbers... They were behind in all aspects. The first attack wave mostly missed and landed in the ocean. However, the upcoming attacks and hits might increase. The more they fire, the better the odds of hitting.
"Preparations complete! Ready to launch the Arrows of the Wind God!"
"Target the enemy flagship! Ready... Launch!"
The Arrows of the Wind God were the prized, self-developed attack weapons of Altaras. Affixed to the tip of the arrowhead of a spear-like ballista bolt is a magic gem primed for casting explosive magic. There's also another magic gem for use in a Tears of the Wind God affixed on the bolt. The arrow feathers on the bolt are fixed in a spiral and with the winds from the Tears of the Wind God, the bolt is propelled and the spiral feathers give horizontal stabilization, increasing its range. Since the amount of wind produced is enough to propel a ship, its speed should be easy to guess. Once the bolt lands, it will cause an explosion at the level of an explosive round. A large volume of magic gems were employed for each bolt and so its cost-effectiveness was astoundingly bad. However, with a long range of 2km and a capability of exploding, it has more power than even the massive cannons they possessed, which only fired regular rounds. In an event where they're facing another uncivilized nation, they can attack from a range leagues further than their counterparts. In effect, it is Altaras's trump card. This is a weapon born from them being a magic gem producer.
With the sound of multiple swooshes, a powerful wind blew over the ships. The Arrows of the Wind God were successively launched against the invaders.
Place: Parpaldian Imperial Navy
"We've hit one ship and caused a fire!"
"That hit rate was bad. Just as much as you'd expect from the first shots."
Despite doing their utmost to reach them at a range of 2 km, ships of the line are actually completely suited for bombardment at point-blank range where they can better display their power. Setting a ship ablaze was just lucky. Without feeling any particularly strong emotion, Sius looked over the situation. Beside him, optimism was uplifting his officers.
"It's just a matter of time as always. The following warships will soon enter range as well. So sloppy..."
"No way around it. The difference in range is just too great. Our speed is also greater. We expected that this would be overwhelmingly in our favor."
While lamenting his subordinates, Sius pondered if they should close the distance or annihilate them with their air power.
"Enemy ships are changing course and are on the attack."
Sius turned his head at the lookout's report.
"Hmm... What are they going to do?"
"Enemy ships are loosing their ballista bolts sequentially!"
"Ballista? What do they hope to do with using such a short-ranged weapon?"
Ballista were weapons of the earlier eras and at best could only reach 300m. In the midst of the officers looking at one another with bewildered faces, only Sius noticed the trajectories of the bolts.
"The bolts... They're flying!"
"What?!"
The bolts flew over the 100-gun ship of the line Shirant and landed some 50m away on the ocean surface. Immediately afterwards, the explosive magic manifested, erupting into explosions. Several massive columns of water jutted from the ocean surface.
"There were disturbances on the magic signature sensors. I believe those bolts were fixed with Tears of the Wind God and explosive magic."
Reports came up from the magic signature sensor operators, who operated something different from the anti-air magic signature sensors.
"What a wasteful use for those magic gems... Still, they were threatening. They must not be underestimated."
Bolts flew towards them one by one. Columns of water erupted from all around as if they were aiming for the flagship. 15 Arrows of the Wind God directly hit the flagship Shirant, enveloping it in massive explosions.
Place: Altaras Paradox Engine
"So, what do you think?"
The Engine crew looks at the assessment of Altaran Arrows of the Wind God.
"It got enough speed. But... Just by checking the barrel, the accuracy is already behind our tank cannons. I'd say longer barrel will help increasing their accuracy."
Everyone present agreed on that assessment.
"Still... If we can bring this technology to the Alliance, I'm very sure the Union's two most famous weapon smiths will be able to build an improved version. There's also Gensokyo's Vanguard's obsession with Superior Firepower."
"Hold on, you don't mean... Vanguard Marisa Kirisame?!"
"The very same. And I'm pretty sure she will get a new weapon idea if she ever got her hand on that technology. Possibly a sniper cannon."
"Okay... About the magic gemstone, do you think the Alliance can profit a lot if Parpaldia agreed to open diplomatic relationship with us?"
"I doubt it. Their entitlement even caused the Union to gave up on them and choose to settle with Altaras instead. It certainly helps that Altaras have multiple sites of magic gem reserves. If we managed to acquire the magic gem processing factory at Parpaldia Empire, the Union might be able to imbue their weapon with elements. If that does happen... *shudders* Even with Iron Curtain, I don't think any of our ships will remain unscathed."
The crew continue to review the new arsenals they found as they continue to observe the battle.
Place: Altaran Royal Navy
"We've used up all 100 of our Arrows of the Wind God."
"Alright! Set course for the enemy fleet! Close the distance so we could use our magic cannons at once! ... Still, for 15 shots to land on the enemy flagship at this range... The Kingdom's sailors sure haven't loosened a bit."
They focused on the enemy flagship, attacked it, sunk it, and then cut off the chain of command. While the enemy is in disarray, they would close the distance and attack them in one fell swoop. In a situation where their combat strength was inferior, this was the only way.
However...
The smoke enveloping the Imperial flagship cleared.
"W-What the-?!"
Bordo was shocked. The explosive magic on the Arrows of the Wind God was tested on their own decommissioned warships. Their power was tremendous and 10 hits was enough to break the better half of a ship. Still…
"Enemy ship intact! Ah-Enemy fleet firing!"
The communications office screamed.
Some parts of the upper structure of the enemy flagship were damaged, but its hull was seemingly unscathed and it continued to sail and then attack as if nothing happened. Had it been the older ships of the Oversight Army, their attack might have had an effect. Against the anti-magic round iron plating of Parpaldia Empire's proud state-of-the-art ship of the line Shirant, the Arrows of the Wind God simply bounced off and hardly did any fatal damage. The second attack wave from the Imperial main fleet was overwhelmingly more numerous than the first and more than they could possibly avoid.
"Ship of the line Beshial hit! They're gone!"
"Ship of the line Vuodet hit! They're gone!"
"Ship of the line Pacella hit! They're gone!"
"Ship of the line Osia was hit by a flame bullet from a wyvern lord! They're on fire!"
Tragic reports continued. The Altaran fleet fell into panic as the chain of command was shattered.
"F-Fuck! FUCK! Fucking Parpaldians!"
Left to witness his burning and sinking flagship, Bordo roared. Blood dripped from his fists from too much gripping. The going got fierce due to the bombardment from the enemy fleet as the number of hits and casualties increased dramatically.
"Ack!"
An intense explosion. Navy commander Bordo's consciousness was forcefully ended by a direct hit to the poop deck.
Place: Parpaldian Imperial Navy
"Enemy fleet annihilated."
"Our damages?"
"Flagship Shirant received around 15 enemy explosive magic bolts. Since many of them bounced off the deck, there's only slight damage. As for our casualties, one of the war correspondents on the Shirant was so shocked by the hits that he twisted his foot and sprained it. Other than that, no casualties."
"Our dragon knights?"
"None."
The Third Civilization Area Superpower, Parpaldia Empire, destroyed the Altaran Navy and headed for a landing spot on the coast some 40km north of the Altaran capital Le Brias to take it.
Place: Altaras Paradox Engine
That day, when the sun is setting down, Parpaldia Empire arrives at the northern beach of Altaras Kingdom. They will be setting up the base of operations there.
"All right. Let's withdraw and report to the Alliance."
"Right. Altaras Chronosphere is still operational, so we still have an eye on the mainland."
"So, what would the rest of Watcher teams would think about this? They'll surely react, sooner or later."
"Who knows."
The captain of the Engine then contacts Historia mainland command to report about the recent events that happened in Altaras.
"This is Altaras Watcher. We've recorded the entirety of naval and aerial engagements between Altaras Kingdom and Parpaldia Empire forces. We're going to RTB. How copy, Shoukan Command?"
"Solid copy, Altaras Watcher. In fact, I'm about to ask you to return to mainland because of a particular weaponry from Altaras that caught the attention of 'Hephaestus', 'Chiyou', and 'Orreries'. They would like to discuss about it. Consider the mission completed. Regardless, I expect that you return to Altaras for further surveillance."
"Understood, Shoukan Command."
Seeing the crew's eager expression, the captain nods and speaks.
"Let's go."
The Engine departs alongside her escorts for debriefing in mainland.
Date: November 16th, HS 2069/CC 1639
Location: Mahomori, Mori Territory, Daimori Region, Historia Shoukan Dominion, Zeroth Civilization Area
In north of Togoku and Meikai Region, there's a huge land filled with forest called Daimori Region. If Nankaigan in Chigoku Region is the location of the Alliance's Dragon Forces' Shoukan Base, then Mahomori is where the Alliance's weapon developments are discussed. This is also the location of Magus Trio Joint Forces' Shoukan Base. Currently, the Union's three most prominent weapon makers, Marisa Kirisame, Shuu Yasogami, and Homura Meiyou are there.
And just as expected, Marisa is the one who showed the most interest in Altaran Arrows of the Wind God, although Shuu also showed similar expression as well.
"Hmm... I see..."
Noticing that the Chinese deity analyzing said Altaran weapon, Marisa asked her a question.
"So, what do you think about these bolts?"
Shuu then creates a replica of the bolt in response.
"From what I can see, they're tipped with magic stones. Said stones are filled with explosive magic and the other end is fitted with a Tear of the Wind God for faster propulsion and spiral tail or fletching. By rotating the body against the wind, the bolt stabilize itself and extends its range just like a rifle bullet."
"Okay..."
Looking back at Shuu's analysis and the bolt replica she made, Marisa made her comment.
"Well, I actually have a new weapon idea based from these bolts. You see, I've been tinkering with this idea of 'Sniper Cannon Rifle', and Altaras Kingdom might be the key for it. I know that STI already recognize our weapon's capabilities, but you know me. Anything for Superior Firepower."
Marisa and Shuu have been collaborating with each other since their first meeting back in 2020, starting with the creation of various experimental weapons, one of which was the precursor of Hakkero Drones that saw action during Historia-Louria War. As of Meiyou, she said that she can forge any weapons that doesn't include gunpowder as one of the components. Fortunately, she can replicate Arrows of the Wind God after Shuu did it first. The Chinese deity even managed to improve the design for the Kadath Hephaestus to work with. The only thing left is the field test between Historia and Altaras.
For now, the Alliance's main focus is to contain Parpaldia to Philades and wait until the time is right.
"Alright, this should be enough for now. You two continue working on that. I need to prepare in case I'm called."
"Hmm... Got it."
Date: November 17th, HS 2069/CC 1639
Location: Altaras Northern Coast
When looking from Parpaldia Empire, this coastline is the entrance to Altaras Kingdom. The coastline is followed by wide, open, barren wasteland. The water from springs is mixed with salt and only short grass grows in patches. There are neither mines nor opportunities for settlement as the land itself was devoid of any name. Still, the coastline was wide and with the shallow beaches a plenty, landing here was extremely easy. Parpaldian Army, after carefully sending up wyvern lords for overhead reconnaissance, secured a beachhead without particular difficulty. By the next day, they had already set camp.
On the other hand, Altaran Army camped in a position roughly 10km north of the capital Le Brias. They numbered 25,000. Their objective: crush the roughly 3,500 strong landing force of Parpaldian Army which has just secured a beachhead 40km north of the capital. Against a 3,500 strong force, an army of 25,000 was ginormous. Normally, it was in excess. When it comes to such an overwhelming disparity in combat power, things like tactics don't matter in the big picture. Furthermore, the enemy formed up for battle in a wasteland devoid of any cover. Against any other country, they'd win. However, their foe was a Superpower, one of only five in the world to possess the title. As Taara XIV felt something heavy deep in the bowels of his abdomen, he oversaw preparations to set out.
"We may win this time but we mustn't be lax..."
The Altaran Navy was already gone and the enemy had landed without opposition. Additionally, after scrutinizing the messages before they cut out completely, it seems that they hardly did any damage at all before being annihilated. For the sake of the soldiers that have offered their lives to the defense of the Kingdom, the king offered his prayers from the depths of his heart. They likely had families, along with aged parents, engaged partners, and maybe even children. Everyone must have wanted to see them again. However, they offered themselves to the Lingdom to the bitter end. The king thought further. To get back for the soldiers that laid down their lives, they will definitely drive away their enemies this time for the sake of those that they left behind. Up to when they made an enemy of a Superpower, they had no allies. Carrying the lives of his people and the pride of his kingdom, the king partook in the battle.
Nobody on that Kingdom knew that King Taara XIV has been replaced by a clone created by Epsilon Army just two days ago. Kazuto himself already reported it to the Alliance Leaders as SAO Veterans decided to escort Altaras royal family out of the country. The Alliance already have a force stationed there to guard their assets. The king was also put into stasis, since the mental and visual link will be messed up if there's even a slight motor input. Epsilon Army even states that they have to slightly tweak their usual cloning method to be able to create what the Alliance specifically requested. And now the group have to guard the king.
Before the battle can start, Altaras Watcher team is already in place when both Altaras Royal Army and Parpaldia Army began their march.
Date: November 18th, HS 2069/CC 1639
Location: Rubile Plain, North of Le Brias
Proceeding south along the coastline, the Imperial army began their incursion. Wyvern Lords dispatched from the Dragon Carriers danced across the skies above them, sending information on the whereabouts of their enemies back to the ground. Aboard the four-wheeled war cart drawn by horses stood commander Bafram when he was approached by his chief staff to report in.
"We will make contact with the enemy soon. Altaran force numbers 25,000, which we believe to be their main force."
"25,000... With regards to their national power, they've done well."
"Indeed. Once we crush them, Altaras would become part of the Empire."
"Hehehe. There's a lot riding on this battle then."
A sinister smile emerged on Bafram's face.
Ahead of their line were 32 Lindwurms, massive land dragons that were twice the size of elephants. They're a species of quadrupedal dragon that only lives in Parpaldia Empire. Its body was round and at the end of its neck that stretched from its torso was a triangular head similar to that of a turtle's. Thick, short, lizard tail-like fur grew all over it. While it isn't as maneuverable as a wyvern, its scales more than make up for it with their excessive toughness. It also has a magic flame bullet which while shorter in range now has an area of effect in which enemy infantry are cleared. They can also stay on the battlefield for long periods of time. While wyverns enjoy the best mobility and strength in the sky, on the other hand, they can be harmed by arrows, swords, and spears. For capturing territory, protection, and general area control measures, only the lintwurms were effective.
During the Empire's expansion, they've come to be able to control these land dragons. By tactically incorporating the longbow and ballista deflecting Lindwurms, the Imperial army slowly began to overwhelm other countries. The Empire climbed to the top of Third Civilization Area traditionally occupied by elves with them later became known as a Superpower was all because of the existence of their land dragons. Other than them, the Empire also has wheeled great cannons loaded with explosive shells, as well as other horse-pulled cannons. Their infantry were provided with flintlock muskets that fired musket balls. All of these were the Empire's latest weaponry.
Historia Alliance already had a plan to capture these Lindwurms. One major reason for it is to let UNM strengthen their forces with them since GUF already have True Dragons to strengthen their air superiority. The Alliance knew that Parpaldia will most likely invade Fenn next, and they hoped that they can capture these Lindwurms when the invasion happens.
The Rubile Plains were a wasteland wherein grass hardly grew and the ground was mostly level. There, in a landscape wherein one can see far away, the 25,000 strong Altaran Army faced the 3,500 strong Parpaldian Army. King Taara XIV unsheathed his family's prized sword and barked out orders to move forward.
"The Empire is no longer a nation! They're tyrannical monsters that devour people and countries alike! ADVANCE! Cut down their noses which have grown too long!"
"YEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!"
The soldiers grew mad with their shouts of anger shaking the very air itself. At the same time the horns sounded, the musket-brandishing dragoons ran forth. The earth shook as dust was kicked up. Behind them, the musketeers followed.
BwoooooOOOOOO!
Unsettling, unsuitable for the battlefield noises coming from the horns rang out. At the same time, loud sounds and explosions erupted in front of the Altaran advance.
"W-What the-?!"
Dust was kicked up, along with ear-deafening booms.
"No way... Magic cannons?!"
The explosions resembled those of the explosions caused by explosive shells used in naval warfare.
"Impossible! Magic cannons require to be fixed on emplacements!
"Those bastards managed to miniaturize those things so that people can carry them?!"
Soldiers were mowed down in the tens around the spots where the explosive shells landed and exploded. However, Altaran soldiers weaved through the gaps in the explosions and continued their advance towards the Imperial army. To hinder them from getting any closer, Wyvern Lords descended from the sky and rained down magic flame bullets on the Altaran army. The fireballs launched by a total of 300 Wyvern Lords were like a rain of fire. Still, despite the dense cover provided by explosions and aerial support, they were like splashing water on a burning rock against the overwhelming number of the Altaran army coming down in a human wave. Their power was by no means bad, but since they aren't suppressive, they only took down the soldiers that were near where they hit.
"YEAAAAAAAHHH!"
"Bring forth the hammer of justice on the Empire!"
More dust was kicked up as the Altaran army closed in on the Parpaldian army. Ahead of the Altarans were a line of land dragons spaced 50 m apart. The average cavalryman towered 2.5m above the ground by the lintwurms were as much as 4m tall. Despite that, there were only 32 of them. If they get through the gaps in between each one, there'd be no problem.
"Overwhelm them with numbers! Push forward!"
The dragoons aimed for the land dragons with their muskets.
"Such big targets... Eat this!"
Triggers pressed as musket balls were loosed towards the Lindwurms.
Clank! Clank! Clank!
The musket ball that did hit all bounced off, leaving only the sounds of the metals colliding against the tough land dragon scales.
"Tsk! What toughness!"
"Dragoons! Aim for their joints! They shouldn't be armored with scales!"
"We mustn't dampen our efforts now! Advance Dragoons! Slip past the gaps in between the land dragons and charge against the enemies to their rear! Let's go!"
The Altaran Dragoon commander, judging that it was impossible to take down the land dragons, entrusted them to the following dragoons and spearmen. Once they get past the gaps, there should be 300m to the enemy main force. If the land dragons turn around, they'd get pincered, but seeing that they still haven't done anything substantial, he judged them to be just for show. In the moment that they reached about 50m before going through the gaps, the land dragons that were lined up opened their mouths from which light began to appear.
"No way... Are those magic flame bullets?!"
Since their range was short, the land dragons spouted their suppression-possible magic flame bullets. The formation of dragoons could not be stopped in a short amount of time. As a result, the spearhead of the Altaran army was engulfed within the range of the flames of the magic flame bullets.
"AAAAAAAAAARGHHH!"
"AAAAAAAACK! HOT HOT HOT!"
"EEEEEECK!"
The land dragons continuously spat out flames like flamethrowers, swinging their necks side to side and sometimes up and down, burning the land and enemies within a wide area. People and horses which turned into burning husks piled on one another, turning the frontlines to a painting of hell complete with screams of agony. Since the flames occupied too much space, the Altaran army temporarily ceased its advance. On the other hand, the land dragons slowly inched forward as they continued to spout flames.
"Now!"
Around 300 Altaran dragoons, waiting for the right timing from the movement of the land dragons' necks, slipped past the flames for a moment.
"We won't let you do as you wish on our land any further!"
The dragoon force closed in on the imperial frontline. Just as it seemed that they would be within reach of their muskets...
Papapapapapapam!
White clouds simultaneously erupted from the line of Parpaldian infantry. Before the smoke would clear, the formation of the Altaran cavalry force was broken into tatters.
"W-What happened?!"
Papapapapapapam!
The attacks continued, eradicating the cavalrymen that managed to slip past the lintwurms. The source of the attack came from the simultaneous firing of muskets by the Parpaldian infantry. The Altaran advance was completely stopped. Still, the tragedy didn't stop there. Intense explosions erupted within the Altaran camp.
"No!"
The king looked to the west. There, around 100 Parpaldian warships faced south, bombarding the Altaran camp and the Altaran forces. The battlefield was around 1km away from the coast. With this distance, the Altaran army expected that there wouldn't be any fire support from the navy. However, Parpaldia Empire's magic cannons were much more powerful and reached further than their own magic cannons. It is for that reason that the Parpaldian Army chose this specific battlefield. In essence, they were led here by them. The 100-gun ships of the line rained shell after shell on the deployed Altarans. The bombardment from the 100 ships of the line were better suppressors than the miniaturized magic cannons, causing the Altaran army to crumble. As Taara XIV was in the midst of withdrawing, he was engulfed in flames by a direct hit from a wyvern lord's magic flame bullet, killing him.
In just three days, Altaras Kingdom fell into the hands of Parpaldia Empire. As ordered by Ludius, the majority of the citizens that didn't resist were forced into labor, but the entire royal family including relatives were skewered on pikes for display in front of the royal castle as a tragic final sentence. Only the real King Taara XIV and Princess Lumies escaped.
