Chapter 5: Afternoon

Kuro was just finishing cooking the leftover meal when a loud blaring sound echoed in his mind.

['Warning! Magic-user detected nearby."]

Closing all the appliances, he quickly goes to the living room and saw Ruby touching the coiled silver wire, glowing in a crimson shade. Remembering the previous time when Yang used his silverware to attack the grimm, it seems like this metal is extremely compatible with aura. Walking to the girl he immediately grabs the metal away from her. Ruby looks at him in shock, before turning embarrassed.

"Didn't your sister say to never touch what isn't yours?"

Ruby is looking at the floor while twiddling her finger, flushing red at the unbridled curiosity she has. Trying to find an excuse, she stumbled on her words and absentmindedly said.

"I'm sorry! I'm just really curious about this metal because it felt warm in my hand yesterday! I mean…"

Quickly closing her mouth with her hand, she pulls down her cape to hide her face. Kuro looks at her surprised.

"Yesterday? But the only way you can get this wire is in my bag. Ruby, did you come to my room and snooped around?"

She feels indignant at the accusation and properly responds to the boy looking at her.

"No! I'm not snooping around at all, I was just trying to recall your features for my drawing, it was supposed to be a quick and leave the room after seeing you I swear, then you scared me making me bump into your bag, making some stuff fell down, I placed it all back when I felt this warm thing. Which is weird."

Kuro felt like Ruby is telling the truth, looking at the banner that was given to him by the family in the bag, he saw his face drawn cutely. It seems like she was just curious, after all, she is just a kid.

"Really? Interesting. Ok, you're forgiven Ruby, but please don't touch my stuff unless I give you permission."

She looks at the boy and feels relieved that he isn't really angry at her.

"Really? You're not angry at me?"

Ruby reminds Kuro of the time he was snooping around in his parent's room, and how they were angry at him when they found out. Looking at her right now, he imagined a mischievous red girl pranking others. It seems like she heard him laughing as she pouts at the boy.

"Hey! You're thinking something rude aren't you?"

With the tension gone, it seemed like Ruby is the magic-user the Grimoire is detecting, is it because of the silver-eyed bloodline? They were a gift from the God of Light after all. Kuro took a note in his journal to investigate later, maybe in ancient texts in libraries. Asking other people, especially those close to the Ozpin will just be begging for the attention of two immortals and that will be detrimental to his goals.

Kuro looked at Ruby, who is now worried because of his silence earlier. Looks like he will have to cover his bases after hanging out with her.

"I never was. But here's a photo of me so you don't forget"

Answering the girl, he quickly grabs her scroll on the carpet as he opens the camera, while quickly pulling Ruby into his grasp, surprising her. Pointing her scroll toward them. He smiles with glee.

"Wha!"

"Say cheese!"

"Cheese!"

Kuro looks at the photo, then sees Ruby so red that it almost matched her cape.

"Hah, look at your face. It's almost the color of your cape!"

Ruby grabs her scroll and looks at the photo, embarrassed. She is happy, because no boy was that close to her, due to her admiration for weapons and heroes at a young age which weirded out others. Putting her scroll in her pocket. "Yang will tease me about this nonstop if she ever finds out."

"Kuro, please don't show this to Yang, she'll tease me about this forever."

He agrees with her, not only will Yang tease her sister about the photo, but may also pummel him to near death, he had seen how protective she is when it comes to Ruby.

"Ok, let's keep this a secret, besides. I'd like to find out more about this metal's properties."

Kuro holds the coiled wire in front of their faces, as the silver metal, now back in its normal state, looks unassuming as ever. It felt cold to him despite holding the wire, like any normal metal. How did it feel differently to Ruby? The girl, curious as ever, asks the boy the origins of this metal.

"Where did you find it anyways?"

Using the village excuse for the nth time, Kuro felt like patting himself on the back for thinking of a good backstory. Besides, it's not like anyone here in remnant will figure out that he is from another world, the doctor was close, but it looks like he assumed that he came from a different kingdom.

"It was an heirloom from the village, said to be extremely old."

Observing the metal, Ruby felt like the color was exactly the same as her eye, which was weird, iron and steel are extremely close to the color, but not the same shade as this.

"Huh, it looks like the color of my eyes"

While observing the metal for any unusual occurrence, Kuro assumed that the metal also exists on the remnant because silver is a core part of this world. What he didn't know was that silver indeed exists, but not in the way he thinks.

"Because it is, it's named silver."

Ruby has never heard of a metal named silver, just the color. Seeing that it has the same shade as her eyes, it seems like the people who found it named it because of that.

"Like the color?"

"Yep."

Confirming her question, he went back to observing the metal, but it was still normal as ever. Giving it to Ruby, she pours her aura into the wire, making it glow crimson. She pours her aura in set intervals, making it look like a blinking light. Kuro makes a deduction that only aura can interact with this material intimately, based on previous experiences. He used the Grimoire to access the net, it seems like the name silver is only about the color variant, and vague sentences from old stories. That's impossible he thought, did the legends or origins of this name get erased?

Ruby, unaware of the boy using the soul-bound device, looks at him staring into the metal absentmindedly, "He sure does space out a lot today". She thought it was cool that a metal that can interact with aura this easily is awesome and began making plans for her new blueprints.

"That's cool, materials that can interact with aura are super rare and super hard to make, except dust. I never found something or someone that has the same eye color as mine though."

Kuro still believes in Ruby, not because she's a character from the show, but because she is genuinely a good person, just a little aggressive when it comes to her curiosity. Trying to encourage her that she is indeed someone with great potential. He tells her.

"Because you are special. You have the passion, and you're planning to go to Beacon right? You already have blueprints at the ready, which kids at your age do not have until Signal."

She looks down at herself like she heard it a thousand times before, she thought that it was the usual encouragement talk, unaware that he believes it wholeheartedly.

"I'm not special, I can't even fight properly. I always lose to Yang and dad when we train. And I'm not even the best at fighting in school."

Kuro feels the atmosphere is getting down again. "Maybe next time I'll convince her. Dammit, I didn't think that with Qrow not giving her the inspiration to use a scythe and train her would affect her self-confidence so hard."

"I want to help her", with a goal set in his mind, he steers the topic to food.

"Alright alright. Lunch is ready! We got some spare leftovers from the fridge from last night that I used."

She looks at him smiling and hungry, like the sad face she was making didn't happen.

"That's great! Let's go to the kitchen."

She walks with giddiness at the thought of food with Kuro following her.

After a few minutes.

"Wow, you're a good cook Kuro! You made something new out of the leftovers we have."

Kuro, glad that his cooking made someone happy, still feels a bit hungry due to the increased need for food in his body, looks like he could make some more.

"Nah, it's just experience! Hmm, I'm still feeling a bit hungry, I blame aura. I know Ruby, can you help me make some bread? I've seen some flour and thought we could make some. I'll even teach you how to use the oven properly."

Kuro laughs, with Ruby pouting at him, before getting excited to be taught how to make some more food.

"Sure! I love helping people."

He is really grateful that aura protects him from extreme heat because there are no mitts in the kitchen, he asked Ruby first to make sure if aura can protect him from hot surfaces to which she agrees. As he grabs the burning hot baking tray out of the oven that felt warm, the smell spread throughout the kitchen, making her salivate at the aroma of the bread.

Slicing the bread into two, Ruby ate the bread, amazed at how absurdly soft and delicious it is compared to the usual bread they have. Kuro ate his portion as well, as he makes sure that the bread has the same softness it had back on earth, feeling a bit nostalgic even though it has been around 1 week since he came here.

"I can't believe that yeast also has an aura, man it sure was a pain to make it to earth's standards."

Ruby finishes the bread and feels like she ate it from a high-class bakery. She wants to get into his good graces to ask for more in the future.

"I hate to admit it, but you're a better cook than my sister, and she is good. She's pretty competitive if you didn't know"

Kuro sweats at the idea of Yang forcing him to cook when she hears that he is better than her.

"Please don't tell this to Yang"

Ruby smiles at him, and he feels a mischievous aura from her, as he waits for her demand.

"Ok, in exchange we get to play on your laptop, I've seen so many new things from there."

Lucky that it wasn't anything hard, Kuro goes back to the living room to get his bag, opens the device, and creates a new account for Ruby, he must make the laptop able to communicate with the CCT, so he asks the Grimoire if it has the capabilities to do it.

"Grimoire, can you enable the device access to the new network?"

["Affirmative, installing an update to the device's OS and upgrading its security."]

Kuro saw a command prompt briefly appearing on the laptop screen before disappearing. Confirming that the update is done, he placed family-friendly games and hid some of the violent ones. "Wait, should I hide violent games? This world is already dangerous. Eh, might as well place those without frisky scenes in it."

Finished with the device, he set it on the table as Ruby sat with him, amazed at the "CCT terminal" that he has, looking at the new games that she has never seen before.

"Ok! So what do you want to play!"

Afternoon when Kuro was browsing through the net with Grimoire in his hands, Ruby was taking a nap back in her room.
