Chapter 8: Bakery
Following the address, Kuro and Ruby are the only ones standing in the street where the shop is located, and is oddly quiet for a place in Patch, Ruby never thought that there is a part where Patch is not bustling with noise, there are some people that are wondering about their day, but lacking compared to the places they've visited.
"You know Kuro, this is a weird spot for a baker's shop."
The map shows that the shop is in a small part of the town where little human activity occurs, making the shops occupying the area earn a small sum, compared to the busy streets in the center of the town where tourists and locals always interact.
"A quiet place for a job, where little to no crazy events are happening, and I could make as much food as I want? Man, this is a jackpot! No crazy moments for me please, having Ruby and Yang in my life is crazy enough, and this place is perfect for relaxing."
Although Kuro is grateful to the Xiao-Long family for allowing him to live in one of the guest rooms, the sight of two beautiful girls surrounding him is too much for the young man. So much so that he couldn't find a place to relax.
"Caw! Caw!" A bird above them just passes through the rooftops as they walk. As they arrive at their destination, the pair face a small bakery shop, hanging above it is the sign 'Pan Bakery', with a decent aroma coming out of the door. Coming closer they hear a pair of voices inside the shop.
"We're going to close up shop if we can't make this much next month."
"I know! I can't believe that our dreams are cut short, are our products not good enough?. That old geezer told me that this spot is prime for business opportunities."
"Maybe he lied to us? I mean he looked at us strangely while searching for a spot."
"Now that I think about it he was smirking at us. Ughh how could I have not noticed."
Kuro enters the shop, the bell ringing, signaling the owners that a new customer has entered. One of them quickly goes to the counter. Kuro peeks his head and notices a lady clad in a baker's attire.
"Uhhh hello?"
A girl comes to the counter, with a glint in her eyes, wearing a green apron, and smiles at the incoming boy as she displays her bright smile.
"Hi! Welcome to Pan Bakery, what can I do for you?"
Kuro shows the help wanted poster to the girl, making her confused, which is a weird detail for Kuro to catch.
"I found a help wanted poster and thought I could apply for a job here?"
"Wait just a moment."
Grabbing the poster out of his hands, the girl went back deeper into the shop, leaving the two confused as to what is happening. With nothing else to do, they begin wandering the shop.
"What are you thinking?"
"I thought we could need some help around the corner."
"But he looks so plain! He can't possibly be a baker. And we don't even have that much money."
"We can't afford to be choosy now. There's no way we could afford a good baker. And you're getting tired of advertising in the nearby neighborhood. Look at you! You are barely stopping yourself from getting asleep."
"I thought I hid that well. sigh, alright, just this once because we do need the help."
Kuro hears whispering voices, as the noises get angry, then confused, and then resigned, a girl appears out of the door, wearing a brown apron. There is a slight difference in her face, it must be twins, he thought. And she looks more lively compared to the one who greeted them.
The girl observes him, as she notices that Kuro does indeed look plain, in this day and age people are more fashionable and expressive since clothes are widely used as a freedom of expression, like hunters who have custom-made clothes that are unique and tailored to them. Oh well, as long as he can bake she compromises.
"Can you make bread?"
Kuro was about to respond when Ruby comes out of nowhere directly standing in front of the girl, mildly surprising her.
"Of course! Kuro is the best cook in all of Patch, He makes the best bread. It's so soft like you cannot believe it! And there was this secret recipe that he won't show to me. I know because I saw him writing on his scroll when we were cooking."
Kuro freaked out since he didn't notice Ruby spying on him writing on his Grimoire as many recipes as he can remember, just so he could propagate the food culture of earth. "Thankfully it's just recipes"
The previous girl who greeted him comes out and overheard Ruby's statement, feeling skeptical of her claims. Just as the girl with the brown apron was about to accept, she blocks her sister's mouth as she challenges Kuro.
"Really? how about we give a little test huh?"
Ruby's eyes sparkle as she can't wait to show these naysayers the deliciousness of her friend's cooking, drooling at the thought of eating his food, she lets her imagination flow. Kuro notices her expression, thinking it was devious of her to get free food.
At the kitchen
The kitchen is filled with tools not seen in the cabin, as well as a large dome filled with intense heat acting as an oven, all in all, the equipment Kuro needs is readily available for him to make any kind of food. Looking at the ingredients in the rather large refrigerated room, flour, yeast, sugar, salt, the usual when it comes to making regular bread, plus some ingredients meant for meals. Taking note of all the ingredients and equipment he begins making one of the most popular foods on earth, the pizza. He noticed while touring the town with Ruby that there has been a lack of pizza products in remnant, which is an affront to him and everything he stood for and begins rectifying this mistake as fast as he can.
The twins and Ruby are standing at the side of the kitchen watching Kuro go through their inventory, Ruby looks very excited about what kind of new food her friend will make, as one of the twins begins talking to her.
"If your friend here doesn't satisfy both of us, then he is not accepted for the job and will be covering for all the ingredients he uses."
Ruby doesn't feel pressured as she feels confident in her friend, having tasted his food.
"Just you wait! I believe in my friend."
The twins are surprised that Ruby is not worried at all, and they begin to hope that he could surprise them as well.
Kuro begins by creating pizza dough, which is tougher than he is used to, but thanks to Yang training him on how to use his area, he easily pounded the dough into a regular round pizza shape. Satisfied with the consistency, he placed the prepared dough to the side to rest as he begins making the toppings and sauce.
With no ready-made pepperonis, he begins to make one, grounding the beef and pork, mixing them with available spices, and shaping them into little hotdog shapes. He begins frying them as he brings out ingredients for the bread he made at the cabin, he thought that pizza won't be considered a bakery product, due to the number of ingredients perceived by the people here as something unrelated to baking. So he makes another dough for the bread as it rests for a few minutes, just in time for the pepperoni to be ready, as he cuts it for the topping.
Finally ready to make the pizza, he slathers the sauce in the flat pizza dough and covers it with pepperonis and gives it a good dose of shredded cheese and some herbs, places it in the fired oven, as well as places the bread dough in the oven.
Wiping the sweat out of his brow, he feels confident that it's a job well done, and it was lucky that all of the ingredients needed are available on this planet. There are some unique ones, like a fruit that tasted like chocolate, even though chocolate normally is made out of cacao. Now it's just the waiting game. Placing a timer for each food in the Grimoire, he begins cleaning the workplace, making use of the surplus dough.
Making some sticks from the spare pizza dough is simple enough, just cut some sticks of cheese and cover them with the dough. Then frying it for a few minutes, making for a great side along with pizza and bread.
The spectators stop talking to each other as their noses smell two distinct aromas, making their stomachs growl as Kuro brings out the pizza and bread from the oven, and places it at the table.
"Here you go, fresh from the oven."
Ruby quickly goes to the table, observing it very closely, curious about this new dish her friend created.
"Oh! Oh! Kuro what kind of dish is this? I've never seen it in Patch before."
Kuro brings out a long knife for cutting slices, he was disheartened that couldn't find pizza cutters in the kitchen, affirming that pizza doesn't exist in Remnant yet. Better now than never to introduce this dish o the world, he thought.
"Ohhh, I just call it pizza. It is a versatile food that can be cooked with any combination of ingredients."
Slicing the pizza into 8 parts, Kuro gives one to Ruby, which she eats immediately, she winces a bit because it's currently hot, but ignores it as she fervently consumes the whole slice. It seems like aura also dulls the tongue being burnt.
The twins are amused at Ruby's reaction to pizza, each grabbing the slice, and they blow at the food to cool it down.
"Interesting. It does smell good, wonder how it'll taste like."
Biting the pizza, the twins' tongue is filled with flavor as they get astonished by the taste, humming in delight as they carefully eat the slices. Kuro joins in as he ate one as well, crying internally with joy as he gets to taste pizza in Remnant after a long period of time.
After finishing the dishes, the twins excitedly nod at each other as a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity has come to their bakery, at last, feeling that Kuro is the one to make their store extremely famous and quickly give Kuro an apron.
"You're hired!"
Omake
Not canon btw
While Kuro is carefully enjoying the pizza, he hears some weird noises beside him, turning his head at the source he saw the twins and Ruby moaning in a way that reminds him of that one weird cooking anime. He is immediately filled with fear as he hopes that this world cannot be the same as that.
"Hmmm!"
But alas, Kuro's fears have come true as the trio begins squirming in a very provocative manner that makes his imagination go wild.
"Why is this a thing! Is this why most food here sucks ass?"
Not wanting to see more of the display he excuses himself as he walks toward the door. While the noises behind him become louder and become more sensual as he.. Wait a minute.
"Why are there ripping SOUNDS behind me? Is that fabric? I need to get out of here!"
Closing the door behind him, the noises become fainter as the door acts as a dampener. Kuro begins running as he hears the door being destroyed as three girls begin chasing him. With tears in his eyes, he cries and curses out to the air.
