Chapter Three- Life Must Go On

The sun was shining and the birds were chirping as the people in National City were doing their best to live their lives post Zod's second invasion of Earth. In one particular penthouse suite, the sound of an alarm clock was ringing as a woman groaned in protest. The filtered rays of the sun inside of her apartment made her gently pull off her blanket as she closed her alarm. She stretched her muscles and prepared for the day ahead.

She made herself a quick, easily digestible snack as she got ready for a workout. There was a time in her life where she would scoff at doing such a thing like this, preferring to simply drown her sorrows and pain in alcohol. Now, she found a better avenue. There was a studio gym near her building and it was the perfect place for her to train and to learn to defend herself.

In the beginning, her attempts at learning how to fight and self-defense were laughable and pitiful. And now, she felt she had a better handle on things. Whenever she felt sorrow, pity, anger, she came here and worked it out with her trainer.

She had no idea why she never did this before. All this self-defense training she did combined with all the weightlifting she had been doing had given her a greater body than she ever thought possible. People's heads turned when they realized that the CEO of L-CORP, Lena Luthor, had such a great ass and thighs that were worth killing for. There were many men and woman who sometimes did a double take.

After her workout was complete, she went home and made her way into her bathroom, ignoring some of the bottles of expensive alcohol before she took a look at herself in the mirror and started her morning rituals. She shed her clothes and stood in the shower as she let the water pour all over her body. She placed a hand on the wall, as she realized that today was going to be a tough day.

It was the day of the anniversary of Zod's invasion, the day that many people lost their lives so callously and cruelly due to the invaders. Her heart went out to the many children who died in this chaos. Zod targeted many a hospitals; hospitals that were sponsored by her company. It had filled her with rage and anger, and also sorrow. She blamed herself for the events that transpired that day.

If she was not manipulated, if her emotions were not played with, if only she never fell into a convenient trap; these what-ifs were plaguing Lena's mind. It would be a long time before she ever slept peacefully. These regrets, along with her own past trauma would make things difficult for her to find peace.

She sighed as she finished her shower. After drying herself off, she wore her clothes and made herself breakfast as her eyes fell on a photo of her and Kara.

She sighed as she thought about Kara. She came to National City to make a difference, to redeem the Luthor name, to show the world a Luthor and a Super could coexist, and to show the world that the Luthor family was more than her psychotic brother and her bat-shit crazy stepmother.

The results were mixed to say the least. The people of National City were cautious, not that she could blame them. The people from the DEO were suspicious. She never did believe that Alex Danvers worked for the FBI. And then there was Kara.

She held in her laugh the first time she saw her. She could not believe that people were this stupid. All it seriously took to fool people was a sluggish gait, acting comedic and ditzy, and a pair of thick glasses. Lena shook her head. People truly believed what they wanted to believe in life. The baggy clothing that Kara wore did nothing to hide the lithe, yet powerful body she possessed.

She was initially surprised that Kara was so friendly with her and wanted to know more about her. Initially, she wanted nothing to do with Kara. She kept her walls up as she had a poor track record of friends and betrayal coming from the so-called people who said they loved and cared for her.

However, Kara was different. Kara just genuinely wanted to be her friend. Slowly, but surely, she chose to believe and hold onto that sentiment. Even when things were going haywire in National City and everyone was against her, Kara was always on her side.

However, she knew that Kara was also holding back in their friendship. Even though she had shared much information about her life with Kara and had chosen to be vulnerable, Kara could not trust her with her secret, and things significantly cooled when it was discovered by the DEO that she had access to Kryptonite and the hypocrisy and ugliness surfaced.

And then this Invasion had fractured things to a great deal. Kara had stopped speaking to her and was doing God knows what. And she was left to deal with grief and pain.

Despite all the drama, the hate mail, and the feelings of guilt she had, Lena refused to stay in her suite and waste her life feeling misery and sorrow. She picked herself up and vowed to do better. The people working at L-Corp had her back and made her know that they were with her every step of the way, and for that she was very grateful.

In the year that had passed, Lena redoubled her efforts to fix the city, heralding and supporting many charities that focused on helping the victims of families recover that lost their world during the Invasion. Lena had made a personal effort to see each and every one of those families and do her best to give them some measure of closure.

In addition to this, she made sure the Luthor Hospital and every hospital affiliated with her name was better protected and had better protocols. She was never going to have another debacle like the one last year. She remembered seeing the corpses littering the roads and she was never going to see a scene like that again, no matter the cost.

However, since today was the anniversary of the Invasion, she wanted to pay her respects. She felt paying them at night would be better. She could avoid a crowd and also a scene.

There was one thing that was still plaguing her soul. She was not getting any sleep. While the dead were plaguing her mind, there was one recurring nightmare that stood out. She was being plagued by the memory of her mother, how she drowned, and how she stood there and did nothing.

She had no idea if she could ever get past this. Perhaps, she needed to see a shrink, see if there was a way to move past all of this. She had no idea if these regrets would ever let her find peace. She didn't really consider herself all that good. She was filled with too much self-loathing. She needed help.

She was shaken out of her musings from her phone buzzing. She sighed as she realized it was Lillian. Well, no time like the present to rip off a band-aid and have a much needed conversation.

"Aren't you going to say anything? You know, I do worry about you."

Lillian Luthor sighed as she stared at her daughter. She had to admit, Lena was a sore spot when it came to her. Lena was the representation of her husband's infidelity. Lena was the representation that she was not enough for Lionel as a woman.

She sighed as she thought about Lex. She had to admit that she was not a good mother. Though she loathed the Kryptonians and all aliens for what they truly represented, she had to admit she made many missteps when it came to Lex and Lena. She should have been a better mother and an overall better human being. She should have reprimanded Lena when she leaked that poor girl's diary in front of a whole school. And she should have comforted her when she lost her mother instead of feeling disgusted by her.

Lillian had no idea what would happen today. Perhaps, Lena came to break all ties with her. She would never admit out loud, but if Lena did that, it truly would break her heart.

Lena finally decided to speak.

"I came here to fully break ties with you. I fully came here to call you every name under the sun and to tell you off for being an absolute bitch and monster of a woman. You kidnapped Supergirl and had her tortured for shits and giggles. You used her blood to unleash a virus and used her heat vision to create a dirty bomb to wipe out millions."

"You never showed me any love or affection. All I ever wanted, Lillian, was you approval, your respect, your love. I fought for the crumbs of your affections and that is a mistake I will never make. You always said that as a scientist I should question everything. You taught me to doubt myself, to seek acknowledgement and praise from the first mentor who was willing to offer it to me."

Lillian closed her eyes in pain at all these reminders.

"I was a helpless… helpless child. I never asked to be born. I am sorry that my father cheated on you. Yet, what did I do to deserve your hate? What… did I do?"

Lena wiped a tear from her eye as Lillian truly realized the pain she cost this child of hers. She should have done something for her, not let her fell like this.

"I can't sleep all that well and I am not sure I ever deserve too. Right or wrong, I fell for that woman's trap. It will be my cross to bear for as long as I live. Yet, as long as I live, I will make sure that a tragedy like that never happens again."

"You can unclench your intestines, Lillian. I know I will regret this, but I still want you in my life. I am not sure what kind of relationship we will ever have, but it will be on you, not me. And don't take this as fact that I have forgiven you. If you ever harm Supergirl, or anyone else in this city or this planet, I will take my fucking foot and shove it so far up your fucking ass that you will have the nastiest, fucking heart attack in existence. Let's see Lillian if you can prove me wrong."

Lena quietly left her stepmother's home as Lillian sat down. She realized she was being given an Olive branch from Lena. She too sincerely hoped she did not waste it.

It was quiet at night, all most too quiet. She had worn a disguise and made sure there were few people at the burial site who came to pay their respects at Area Zero. The Golden Fire was illuminating the area and the cold silence and the feeling death punctuated the atmosphere, reminding people of what they lost.

In Lena's hands were a large bouquet of white lilies which she placed near the Memorial Stone; a massive rectangular stone containing the names of the deceased. She ran her hand gently across their names, recognizing the names of the children that passed away.

As she left the site, she clenched her fists and vowed that such a foolish thing like this would never happen again.
