This chapter is about Imra Ardeen, and she has an interesting back story here, courtesy of silverking77. Without further ado, let us begin.
Chapter Four- Life is good but it can be better
"Life is good but it can be better" is a mantra that is repeated by many people in the world. This mantra was valued by many people, but some held on to this mantra as a way to find a path free from their traumas, their darkness, and their pain. And there was one such woman who held onto this mantra for dear life and repeated every day to remind her that no matter what the problems and pains she had, she needed to live for her loved ones and hope that one day she would be able to see them again.
Imra Ardeen once had a different life. She was once the Princess of Saturn in the 31st century, its heir apparent and was also once part of the Legion of Superheroes, a true legion of heroes responsible for monitoring and protecting the MultiVerse from future threats. She had a husband and a child and she was living a wonderful life. Their marriage was not one born of love; it was arranged by their families. Yet, as time passed she grew to love the man and the child she bore him.
However, her happiness was truly short-lived. It was as if one day her entire world just chose to flip itself on its axis. The sky turned red, the ground was quaking and screaming in pain as the winds grew worse and bolts of lightning descended from the sky and onto her planet. Her planet was tearing itself apart as a mysterious light began to slowly swallow and devour everything; everything soon would turn to nothing.
She had barely enough time to think as she and her husband and her child tried to find a way to escape this hell. To Imra's horror, she realized that space and the existence of her world for some inexplicable reason were being wiped out.
There was a ship inside the citadel that could perhaps out speed this direction but it was a ship that was only made for literally one person and no one else. She shed tears realizing that this was the end of her existence and her happy family and life. As she turned around, a fist powerfully collided with her stomach, as she was losing consciousness. With her hazy version, she saw herself being carried like a sack of potatoes and thrown into the ship. The coordinates punched into the computer were unknown as the ship sped off into the unknown as the last thing she saw before she slept was her husband and child devoured by the light.
Somehow, the ship found its way into the 21st century and she had woken up from her horrifying sleep. When she broke free from the ship, she was in a murderous rage as she found an isolated place and unleashed her rage on the cold, unforgiving ground. She sobbed and screamed as she could not believe what her husband had done and why he had made such a sacrifice in the end. She had no idea why this even happened. She only knew that time travel and opening a portal had played a part in saving her life and she hated it. She could never return from to her world; she was the definition of a paradox, something that should not have belonged here at all. She truly wished she could die so that she could be with her loved ones.
However, she was not one of those people who quit at life and throw in the towel when things get rough and harsh. Her husband was always a source of inspiration for her. He taught her to look forward, to never lament on the past, and to endure and keep going forward in life. Her husband and child would want her to live and not stay beholden and tethered to the past.
When she had finally mourned and shed the last of her tears, she took stock of where she had ended up. Somewhere underground in a place known as National City. She had realized that she had ended up in the home of Supergirl, one of the greatest heroes of the MultiVerse and the inspiration behind the Legion of Superheroes.
However, the news had shocked her greatly. Supergirl had not been seen for an entire year. And an Invasion occurred in National City, one started by General Zod. It seemed that Supergirl had lost an individual she loved greatly. However, the shocking part was that this individual, Nar-Zod looked eerily similar to her husband Menma.
This had thrown her for a loop, and in her mind, this was not possible. This was not the past in her mind. Somehow, someone had changed events greatly and this change had led to something chaotic happening in the past. She just had no idea who could have caused this change and she did not know whether this change was for the better or for the worst.
She would investigate this change later on and get answers for all of this. Perhaps, the death of someone in the past may have been the reason for her timeline being erased from the Multiverse itself. Right now, she had bigger issues at hand.
When Imra had finally calmed down, she realized how lacking the 21st century was in terms of many things. Though war was a constant, the 21st century was quite lacking in technology and medicine but was quite rich and vibrant with culture. However, Imra was not interested in helping the 21st century progress in any way as she feared something could happen to the timeline if she interfered with it. She felt that this timeline needed to discover things on its own and learn and grow in its own way.
As for herself, she needed work or to do something, something that would help her move on and this new world and give her peace and comfort. Something new about National City was it having a national park teeming with wildlife and rich heritage. It had taken her time and figuring out a way to bend the rules, but she managed to land a job as a park ranger.
It was a job that she had come to cherish. She had studied up on the city and the park itself before landing the job. While there were many roles involving a Park Ranger and she was strong and capable enough to fulfill all of them, there were some roles to her job she greatly enjoyed.
The first aspect she enjoyed was the scholarly part of the job. When she lost her home, she lost such a rich part of history and knowledge. As a Park Ranger, one of her duties was to protect the natural resources or cultural sites where she worked and this included obtaining and preserving knowledge of the area. Before the Legion of Superheroes was formed, the 31st century had experienced a cataclysmic event; a serious loss of history and culture. It had taken the 31st century decades before they could recover some of what was lost before it all went to hell. She took her job seriously so future generations could one day come to experience the park the way she did.
The second aspect she enjoyed was the educational aspect. While she could easily help people plan out their timetables and itinerary for coming to the park and what to expect, she enjoyed breaking down and explaining the park's rich history and ecology, and even doing a little re-enacting, all though, she was not good in that area.
And while she could help out in fighting a fire or even with emergency services, the greatest aspect of her job was the serenity and the peace and quiet. While she enjoyed showing people the geysers, the waterfalls, and the hot springs, this job being a park ranger was not stressful. It provided her with warmth and comfort and gave her a chance to interact with people and to help her not regress into a shell.
She also enjoyed the wildlife and the park was teeming with it. She saw all manners of birds, bears, bison, elk; it was so sweet and serene with how wildlife was just thriving. It made her feel welcome and calm. Sometimes, when she was done with work, she too would go visiting the park and just getting lost in the surroundings. She discovered a small, hidden place that she had claimed for herself. Using her telepathic abilities, she would sometimes invite the animals over to sit with her and would quietly try to engage them in silent conversation.
It had taken time for the animals to warm up to her. She probably did not help matters when she invaded their privacy; it would freak anyone out. Slowly, but surely, the wildlife realized she was not a villain. First the birds came to perch on her shoulder, and then it would be the rabbits, and then the bears and the bison and the elk would come to sit near her. She could feel that the animals could sense that she was a lost soul looking for solace and comfort. And so they would stay with her.
Sometimes she would sing to the animals and they would sometime join her in singing. It made her smile a little as she touched her Legion Power Ring. It was a keepsake that she kept with her; a reminder of her past and something that she was not willing to part with or bury anywhere. It was a reminder of better days and a better time, something that she would always hold on too.
And she felt that she would need her powers one day. Something caused her timeline to disappear and for her to end up as a paradox. And there was something evil living on this planet as well. She knew the dance and the story all to well. Good and Evil were things that could not do without the other, and she needed to be prepared.
And when she slept and dreamed, some days she would have nightmares and some days she would dream of Menma and their child. She would dream of his soft touches and kisses and his domination in bed. She would dream of his warm smile, his compassionate nature, and his powerful gaze. And when the dream ended, she would be pissed off that someone or something robbed this of her.
Her resolve was straight and narrow. The 21st century was her new home and she would do whatever she could to protect it. However, she knew her heart was closed to love forever. She felt she could never find anyone other than Menma who could love her so deeply and have so much passion for her.
Shaking her mind from such thoughts, she went back to the land of dreams to dream of what could have been.
