Hiccup is faced with the moral dilemma of having to kill a dragon as part of his final test. He chooses to leave Berk with his dragon, Toothless, instead. On his own Hiccup grows into a formidably strong and dangerous warrior, his bond with Toothless also slowly grants him unknown powers. He's unsure if he's willing to come back and risk his life to save Berk.

What if... - The vikings of Berk life in a cold and harsh world. Dragon raids, plunder runs by enemy tribes and the difficulties that come by living on a rock in the wide sea. Tothless was able to spark empathy in Hiccups heart, but not this time. Hiccup did what was expected of a viking, but would that prepare him for what was to come? Things he would have faced with Tothless?

This is a preview of a revised version of Curse of the Emperor's Sword that I'd like to write one day when I have the time, it's going to have some new features that I hope I can add in with good execution. During a battle, Hiccup is slain by Viggo. Astrid thirsts for revenge on the murderer and grapples with her loss. Viggo himself is taken aback by the complex feelings Hiccup's death has awakened in him. Set between "Family on the Edge" and "Last Auction Heroes" of Race To The Edge Season Three. Getting to the Nest is easy. Leaving is not. One moment of bad luck drops Astrid in the deep end, on her own and trapped in enemy territory. Trapped in a body that isn't her own... AU of HTTYD1 in which Hiccup dies at the nest and Astrid is left behind to carry on... as a dragon.
