At the Granger house everyone was having a breakfast consisting of pancakes and blueberries.
Harry was the first to speak. "I'm thinking about going to help, but I don't want to endanger anyone, least of all all of you."
The Frost sisters smiled fondly at him.
Emma said, "If I'm understanding it correctly, they are currently spending a lot of resources right now hunting you correct?"
Harry nodded.
Phoebe added, "We also have half a dozen ICW operatives around the house. If we leave though, they will probably pull more resources to look for us."
Dan and Emma looked alarmed.
Celeste added, "It is not a concern. They are here to prevent us from having to fight. They fear what we may become if we were forced to kill again."
Emma asked curiously, "Do you always read everyone?"
Mindee said, "It is difficult not to, particularly when the thoughts are very loud. We could ask them to replace these with those who could better shield their thoughts, but they might need those agents elsewhere."
Dan said, "As crazy as it all is, it sounds like just staying put, or at least not letting them know where you are is keeping a lot of resources tied up. That is probably a huge aid as is."
Emma asked, "What are all of your plans now? College perhaps?"
Mindee opined, "I'd like to go get a piano, and maybe convince my sisters and well Harry here to play."
Harry looked around, "I like your house, but it is a bit small for six people. I suppose I could buy a bigger one. I certainly have the money to do so. I'm not sure we have room for a piano in here."
Dan said, "We have the acreage. This is a thirty acre lot. There is a nice spot by a big creak towards the middle of it. Before, when we couldn't remember, we planned to build a better house when we had time, and then maybe rent this one."
Celeste said, "That could work."
Harry said, "I want to help build it."
Dan asked, "You mean by hand?"
"Nope, why don't we go get a bunch of magical construction books and whatever else we need. We can also get a decent tent with a space for a piano and some more bedrooms for now."
"Tent?" asked Dan.
Harry grinned. "A magical tent can have an entire house in it. We should probably get a decent one if we decide to travel."
Dan said, "I remember now, with Hermione. That sounds incredibly useful."
Harry mused, "Heck, if things get bad we might need one again."
Emma said softly, "Hermione would have so loved to be here now. She spent so many months so cold."
Harry said softly, "I know. I will treasure that time I had with your daughter always."
Emma said, "Thanks... So, do you think you can just give those guys a list, or they could take you shopping or?"
Harry grimaced. "I was thinking of polyjuice, but maybe we can just travel to some random magical shopping district. Our guards can shadow us. If news of us, someplace far from here, spreads, well it can't hurt, as long as we don't waste a lot of time there."
Mindee pointed out, "We know French, and so do you if you think about it."
Harry smiled and nodded.
After breakfast, they walked out to where the guards were camping. One of their guards introduced herself as Sarah when they approached. She was a leggy brunette that was just past middle age.
Celeste said, "We would like to go to the French magical shopping district."
Phoebe added, "We figure we would have some time before any message as to our whereabouts would reach the British Ministry."
Mindee added, "We plan to buy a piano, though perhaps not there."
Harry added, "And a tent."
Phoebe chimed in, "And lots of books about magical construction."
Sarah said, "That could work. Could you bring a couple of us with you when you apparate?"
Harry said, "Sure."
"And could you let us know what kind of piano you are looking for? We can likely source one for you while you shop for the rest."
Mindee said, "Hmm. An old upright would work for now. We can repair it. We can get a grand piano later. I know Harry has money, but spending more than a few hundred dollars would seem wasteful when they often give those away."
"Don't worry about it. As long as your not too picky, I can use my discretionary budget for it. The rest of your purchases will be yours though. John, did you want to come along?"
A shorter man with graying reddish hair stepped forward. He said, "Sure, I'll go."
Sarah and John stepped in the circle they made as Harry led the group apparition straight to the French magical district. Less than a minute later they were there.
Sarah was the first to blink. She adjusted her posture slightly and blinked again. "That was." She paused. "That was not nearly as bad as it should have been."
John added, "It was a heck of a lot better than my apparition, to say nothing about the damned international portkeys." He looked over all them closely. "Are you guys okay? International apparition is normally a bad idea."
They moved off the apparition point and began to walk down the walkway. Harry absently cast a mufflingcharm around them.
Celeste said, "We are fine."
Sarah asked, "So, any tips for us?"
Mindee said, "It would be easier to show you when we get back. If would be easier still if you lowered your shielding."
Harry said, "It is not required, but it is easier. Words can be imprecise."
John said, "Wait, I thought you could um read us anyway."
Phoebe said, "We can, but less while you shield. It is not intentional."
Sarah asked, "Could you help us get better at shielding?"
"Sure," said Harry. "To be honest it would be nicer if you could shield better. We can block you out but it requires a lot of focus on our part."
John said, "Well I'm in. You should know that they will insist on examining us in detail if we let you in behind our shields. It is not personal."
Celeste said, "We understand. We did many things we were not proud of before we escaped and after."
"Thanks for your understanding. I didn't want you to be surprised by that."
"We were not," Mindee said softly.
Sarah said, "I think the shop we are looking for is up ahead, at least if you wanted to check out tents first."
Celeste said, "We already know which one we want."
"That is really annoying, you know that?" muttered Sarah.
Harry said, "It is all new to me, yet to us the owners internal monologue about his work was clear as day. We normally ignore it, but mentioning it brought it back to focus. It is kind of scary really."
Phoebe said, "He may not sell it to us. We should go without Harry and the rest."
Harry rolled his eyes. "Yes, I'm sure he would see you as very pretty girls, and yes, I'm sure it might work, but I think we should all go."
Mindee said, "Thank you Harry."
Phoebe rolled her eyes.
Celeste smiled.
They walked up to the proprietor, with Harry in the lead.
"Harry Potter, it is an honor," said the astonished very old wizard.
"Please, I'm just Harry."
The proprietor looked at his friends. "And who are these lovely ladies and friends?" The last was said in a bit of a questioning tone.
Harry said, "Let me introduce you to Celeste, Mindee, and Phoebe. They saved my life. Let me also introduce you to Sarah and John. They are bodyguards of a sort."
"I'm pleased to meet you all. Bodyguards?" he questioned.
Sarah said, "We are with the ICW. The morons back in Britain want him for helping to kill off their latest Dark Lord and some of his followers. You would probably be better off not mentioning we were here. They might come here."
"Well, they won't find out anything from me. Now that you are here, how can I help you?"
Harry said, "We would like your best tent."
"Well right over here we have our best model."
"No, I'm sorry," Harry said. "My friends are what most call mutants. They have special abilities just like we do, but theirs is an almost uncontrollable level of mental abilities."
Phoebe said, "We picked up your thoughts about your real best one. It was not intentional."
"But it's not safe. I could never stabilize it. It would drain a normal wizard to death. I've been afraid to keep working on it at my age."
Celeste said, "We know. We think we can stabilize it. Even if we can't, we want it. We just won't sleep in it."
"Are you sure?" he asked.
Mindee said, "We are."
"Well, I guess it is good that someone wants it. Let's see in British currency a normal expanded tent is fifty seven galleons. I could sell you that plus the other and my notes and work for say two hundred galleons."
Harry said, "I'm fine with buying another tent, in case we need an actual tent, but that is your life's master work. I am not fine with paying a measly two hundred galleons for it."
"Harry, I'm old, I don't need much. I don't even really need this store."
Harry said, "I understand."
He then turned to Sarah and John.
He said, "The tent in question is similar to the room of requirements wasat Hogwarts. It becomes on the inside wherever you want. It is not perfect like the room was. You can tell it is fake if you look closely and it saps a lot of magic from the users, making it potentially fatal to sleep in, but with Hogwarts gone it may very well be unique in the world. What would you say it is worth?"
Sarah asked, "Truly? It can do all that?"
Harry nodded.
Sarah turned to the proprietor. "You said you had notes on its construction?"
He nodded.
"I couldn't begin to estimate. Ten, Twenty thousand galleons? It might be near priceless. Such magic was thought a lost art. I didn't even know about Hogwarts. I would have to get our research group involved, but if Harry doesn't want it we would probably make you a very good offer."
"I'm not selling it for just money," the old man said grouchily.
Phoebe said, "Two thousand galleons. That is the highest you will take."
"Your not remotely fair," the old man said.
"Perhaps not," Harry agreed. "I have the money here, but it would be easier to wait till we went to fetch it. Shall we meet you back here in a couple hours?"
"Sure, I'll be leaving about then."
"Thanks," Harry said. "And there is no need to include the better tent."
"You can't stop me either."
"True," agreed Harry. "I would like to at least add another five hundred for the difference. You can use as much or as little of the money to help out those who couldn't afford your work before."
The old man grimaced. "If I could tell which ones truly needed help and which ones were just a sob story, well things would be simpler."
Mindee said, "We can. We will see what we can find."
"You can…" the old man said in thought. "Okay, well do as you wish."
All four pairs of eyes glowed.
Mindee said, "There is one nearby; not rich, but eager. Looking to find a future in a place not of her birth."
"Penelope Clearwater," said a shocked Harry Potter as all four sets of eyes dimmed.
Harry raced off. The others followed at a slower pace. Ten minutes later Harry sat down at a table where a visibly thin Penelope Clearwater was drinking water. Her stomach growled.
She looked up at him. "Harry Potter?" she gasped in surprise. "What are you doing here?"
"Shopping," he said in amusement.
A waitress came to their table.
Harry asked in French, "Can I have food and drinks for seven? Five others are coming. They may want something else, so just whatever is ready in small amounts for now? Oh, and I want to pay for food for Penelope here for at least the rest of the year."
"Are you serious?" the waitress responded in French.
Harry pulled out a coin sack from his inside pocket and counted out one hundred galleons. He then asked in French, "Will that do?"
The waitresses eyes bulged. Harry handed her the money. She rushed off.
"Harry!" Penelope exclaimed. "You can't do that."
"I can't?" he asked. "Why ever not?"
"Because, that is your money. I could see if you wanted to chat me up for a date or something, but I doubt your that desperate."
"Well, I do have one small tiny request."
"What is it?" she asked exasperated.
"There is a shop that sells tents. I want to introduce you to the proprietor. I'm betting you would make a great apprentice."
"Harry, you know that is not how things work. People don't hire muggleborns. Believe me I have tried."
Mindee was the first to sit down, forcing Harry to scoot over, and then Phoebe sat down on Penelope's side forcing her to scoot over. Celeste took the remaining spot on Penelope's side and the two guards took the next table.
Penelope asked, "Harry, just what is going on?"
Just then several waiters came back setting down food and assorted drinks. The Frost sisters quickly took to the shrimp salad and tea.
Harry said, "Please eat Penelope. We will answer your questions."
She looked at him dubiously. "You just want me to talk to the guy, not promise anything?"
Harry started taking a drink of tea.
Mindee answered. "He has been bored for some time. I think he would love to share his craft with you, or really anyone who could be serious about it. Perhaps you could even take over in a year or so."
Penelope blinked. "Wait, how do you know all this? Huh?"
Harry finished his drink. "Do you really want to know?"
"Probably not. You get in way too much trouble for my taste. I think I liked you better when you were a first year. At least then you could pull off looking innocent."
Harry laughed. The sisters smiled ruefully and then went back to eating.
After dinner was over Harry said, "We need to pick up some books. I don't suppose you know any place that has English versions of arithmancy and runes? We planned to get the French ones, and some books on magical construction."
"I've got mine. I suppose I could give them to you. I have I think one book on magical construction. It is probably a couple galleons worth."
Harry said, "No, you may need them. You can help us select some though if you want?"
"Sure."
They soon emptied the French bookstore of a dozen English books related to arithmancy, runes, and construction, and twice as many French books of the same fields.
After that, they then stopped by the old tent maker's shop.
Harry was the first to speak. "Hello again. I'd like to introduce Penelope Clearwater. I didn't know her well in school as she was a bit older than me, but she was quite sharp, and she was the one we thought might be able to learn from you."
The old man looked her over.
He said in English, "Muggleborn I'm guessing?"
"Yes," she replied softly.
"I'm sorry. I'd have thought you would have had better luck in France."
"It is the language too. I'm leaning, but it is not easy."
"We'll, if your willing to work hard, I'm willing to give it a shot. To be honest, a lot of my work requires a sustained level of magic and concentration that I'm finding difficult nowadays. So, what say you, want to learn how to make the best magical tents in the world?"
"I'd love to. I can't pay you for the training. Harry paid for my meals for the year. I'll pay you back."
"Miss, I think you misunderstand. I've had a dozen people ask to learn from me in my life. All bright. Most pure bloods, but a few half bloods, and I think one muggle born. Six, I even started to train, including the muggle born. About half paid me for the privilege. About half didn't. It was never about the money. That didn't matter. They didn't have the patience and skill to learn what I had to teach them. Do you think you do?"
"I don't know. I would like to try."
"Transfigure something."
Penelope pulled out a course metal comb out of her pocket and with a wave of her wand changed it to a green with red flecks hummingbird.
"Rose."
She waved again, and the bird became a delicate white rose.
"Crystal"
She motioned again and it became a shimmering blue crystal no more than a half of an inch in diameter.
"Copper."
The crystal became flat and dull colored, much like an old copper dish. It shaped itself into what looked like a bangle that would go around a wrist.
"Unoxidized copper."
The copper brightened becoming shiny.
"Mouse."
The copper transformed into a copper mouse and then a normal white mouse.
"Freeform."
The mouse changed to a cat. The cat changed to a hat. The hat changed to a small black bunny rabbit.
"Enough. You have more potential than they did."
"Thank you sir."
"My name is Sebastian. Do you have a place to stay or ?"
"I was staying with a friend, but I ran out of money and she had to move back in with her mother and…"
"Well, let's grab one of the basic tents while we are at it. Can't have a pretty girl like you living in the same house as an old man. You should have a place of your own you can lock at night, even if it is just that. Once you have the skill you can begin making some of your own stuff and I'll help you sell it. Then you can live where you want. Oh and meals. I hate cooking. You any good at it?"
"I'm decent at it."
"Good, I'll give you money for food and you can pay me back for it by dropping off a couple meals a day. You can use preservation charms if you want so you only have one trip. Does that sound fair?"
Penelope smiled. "Yes. Thank you sir. Thank you for this chance."
They apparated to Sebastian's home where he brought them into his workshop and opened the wards to where he was storing his most sensitive work. He made copies of all his notes and gave them the prototype.
Harry opened up the shrunken trunk that contained, among other things, the Potter and Black fortunes. With some help from a counting spell provided by John they quickly counted out the money to pay for the tents.
When they were done Harry walked up to Penelope again.
He said, "It is probably better not to admit you have seen me. Some people in our former homeland are a bit upset with Voldemort getting killed. If you do need anything you can send me a patronus or a message via the ICW. They know where to reach me."
Sarahpulled a necklace out from over her head. It had a hawk in flight on a silver chain.
She handed it to Penelope. "If by chance they do go after you, try to grab hold of anyone in danger, then grab the hawk and say Sanctuary. It will pull you to the ICW in Geneva."
"I will." She turned to Harry, "So you really did it again?"
"Not really," he admitted.
"Oh?" she asked.
"I helped Hermione make a magical explosive. It was exhausting work. She wasn't strong enough. It was weeks of work, and then at the end of one long day when I thought we were about done and ready to go she caught me with a stunner.
When I woke, Voldemort was dead. Hogwarts was gone and the ministry was after me, again."
"So, Hermione saved us all," she said softly.
"She did." He swallowed again. "She truly did."
"You're a good man Harry Potter. I'm still not sure why you are with identical twins of all things, but I know your a good man."
"They saved me."
"It is more than that I think," Penelope said absently.
Mindee walked up. She asked curiously, "What of you? Have you given up on dreams?"
"Magic just seems so much less magical these days, though I do look forward to my lessons."
Celeste asked, "Can we borrow your comb?"
"Um, sure. Not sure why you would need it for. Your hair looks perfect." She fished it out and handed it to Celeste. Celeste let go of it.
It sat floating in front of her even as her sisters took her hands and Harry filled in the missing place.
The little stainless steel comb glow with blue white light as its rearranged itself into a tiny little self playing music box that began to play twinkle twinkle little star.
"Amazing," Penelope said. "Very few can transfigure anything that actually plays music."
Harry said, "It is permanent. It is the same amount of metal arranged differently."
Penelope waived her wand, her eyes widening as she checked his statement. "I didn't know that was possible."
Harry smiled and asked, "Was that magical enough for you?"
Celeste whacked him lightly on the back of his head.
Penelope blushed. "I suppose it was. You should probably go before you make your girlfriends mad."
"Girlfriends?" sputtered Harry.
Mindee rolled her eyes. "Forget about it Harry. We are in no hurry, nor should you be."
Harry smiled and nodded.
"I just hope they found a good piano," muttered Mindee.
It turned out that they did and she was soon playing it. The next day the ICW asked to outright buy their new tent for double the money. They refused, but did say they could send out people to help them figure it out. Theyaccepted their offer of his original payment for their cooperation.
The next day Penelope and Sebastian were manning the tent store when six aurors from the British Ministry of Magic walked up to them.
Sebastian greeted them. "Hello. Interested in a tent? I could make you a good deal on a bulk buy for your department."
The one in the front said, "You know why we are here. Where is he?"
"I have no idea what you are talking about."
They drew their wands.
"Last chance old man. Turn over Harry Potter or you are coming with us."
The old man was firm. He had his wand out as did Penelope. "I told you, that I do not know where Harry Potter is. I've never seen the lad."
"Crucio!" the lead one shouted.
Penelope conjured marble in front of Sebastian, but it shattered a second later.
Sebastian screamed as he fell to his knees.
Penelope dodged several stunners headed her way before the aurors were taken down from hiding by simultaneous stunners from invisible wizards.
Sebastian pulled himself up with some help from Penelope. A half a dozen ICW aurors appeared.
The lead one said, "I'm sorry. We should not have waited, though now we have something to charge them with at least."
"I'm happy to do my part." Trembles ran through his body.
The lead auror said, "You have been hit before."
"I know. If one of you could help me to my healer."
"I'll do that. One will go with the prisoners but return soon with another half dozen. The rest will stay here to protect your assistant."
He nodded. He gratefully accepted the help to walk to the small clinic on the far end of the shopping area.
On the way the auror asked, "Are you sure you shouldn't simply close up shop for now? I know we asked before."
"No, though if you could take them down faster it would be appreciated."
"It is a fine line. By waiting until they cast, we can hold the lot for long enough to get Britain's ministry under some level of control. The one who cast the unforgivable will of course be executed, unless he is found to be under some kind of compulsion. Eliminating those six likely saved lives."
"I know. That is why I'm doing it."
"You have our thanks. I'm hoping that now that they have shown to be willing to use unforgivables, we can raise their threat level to presumed hostile and hold them as enemy combatants. That would mean we stun first, and ask questions back in Geneva."
"Good. I really don't want to go through that again. Now, how long until you launch your full assault?"
"I couldn't tell you if I knew. You should know not all actions are public. We have saved dozens of first gen already and hope to finish that preliminary task well anytime now. That is the only reason I can tell you. I'm sure we haven't got them all…"
"That is good to know."
The next day Dan and Emma Granger led them down to the creek that passed through their property. The water rushing through it made a musical noise through the warm Australian morning.
Mindee said, "I think its time for a song." The other Frost sisters rolled their eyes at her, but acquiesced when she glared at them. She turned to Harry, "Conjure us instruments."
Harry grinned and smiled.
Mindee's eyes glowed and soon the others followed. Harry conjured a beautiful violin and handed it to her. A hand drum was conjured for Phoebe and an acoustic guitar was conjured that he absently strummed.
He said, "I can't believe I can play this."
Mindee grinned. "Our friendship has benefits."
Celeste and Phoebe rolled their eyes. Harry blinked.
Mindee smiled and began playing. The others joining right in. Celeste sang.
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.
On the side of a hill in the deep forest green.
Tracing of sparrow on snow-crested brown.
Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain
Sleeps unaware of the clarion call.
They continued their impromptu concert as they made their way to the location the Grangers wanted to build a house.
Charles Xavier focused the power of Cerebro on Britain, trying to find those like Harry who were imprisoned. Jean Gray was sitting in a second chair. She was not touching Cerebro, but providing Charles an anchor for his own consciousness.
This was the tenth twenty minute session followed by forty minute break. Pushing Cerebro to search Britain was difficult and not only because of the distance. The Frost sisters and Harry had made it look easy.
There he thought. There a group is. There were at least a hundred children caged there, but there were also at that many adults. Too many.
He panted even as he wrote down the coordinates. "Jean, we have to get them out. There are at least a hundred kids in cages and at least as many adults. There are magical wards I think too. Call the ICW. Tell them. Tell the Frost sisters too. We might need them. There is something else. Something hidden."
Charles passed out. Jean quickly caught him and made sure he was comfortable.
The Grangers and their impromptu band were nearing the middle of their property as their song continued.
Tell her to find me an acre of land:
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme;
Between the salt water and the sea strands,
Then she'll be a true love of mine.
War bellows blazing in scarlet battalions.
Generals order their soldiers to kill.
And to fight for a cause they have long ago forgotten.
They were startled out of their song by Jean's thoughts.
"Celeste, Harry, Mindee, Phoebe. Can you hear me?"
"We can hear you."
"The professor found the location of about a hundred children in cages, only they are surrounded by at least a many guards. There are probably magical wards as well. He thought that you might be needed, if we were to minimize casualties among the kids. He also said something was hidden before he passed out. I don't think he entirely knew what."
They replied, "Is he well?"
"He is. Just tired."
"We will go. Send us the location."
"Here. Can you see it?"
"We can."
Jean sent, "I'm going to try to get the ICW to storm the place. We need to coordinate, so don't go by yourselves. We are flying over as well. Can you find a place for us to land and coordinate?"
"We can."
"Contact us when you are there."
"We will."
Back in the clearing Harry stopped to admire the location of the Granger's new home for a few seconds. He then turned around and said loudly, "Come out."
Sarah was the first to drop her disillusionment. She asked, "Is there a problem?"
"Yes. Charles found at least a hundred kids in cages in Britain and as many or more adults. We don't know details, though I do know where. We intend to go. We hope the ICW will help. Jean Gray is contacting them now. If the ICW does a frontal assault we hope to protect and get the kids out. Worst case we will hold till you finish your work."
Sarah said, "We will have to coordinate with the rest, but I think the main thing is going to be a staging area. If we get to the kids and get the wards down we need to portkey them away, and it would be a lot better if it was to somewhere they can immediately be moved, just in case we have to retreat."
Harry said, "The place we used to use was destroyed. Hogwarts is gone. Neville was still alive last I knew. His home should have very good wards."
The others approached, including Dan and Emma.
Sarah asked, "Can you take me there? One of the others can report back."
Harry said, "We can take you to Britain. We will have to try to contact Neville from there."
"Good, Let's go."
Mindee set her violin down reverently on a nearby large tree stump, before turning to the others.
Harry repeated with his guitar, seemingly determined to treat it with as much respect as she did. Phoebe even set her drum down with a certain amount of respect as well.
Celest was last. She looked at that rock and its collection with a certain amount of fondness for a few moments before also turning away.
They formed around Saraand apparated away.
Left in the clearing were the Grangers and the other members of their security detail.
Emma walked up to the tree stump. Her husband followed. She picked up the violin with every bit as much care as Mindee set it down with.
"We should take care of these for them."
Her husband asked, "Won't they just vanish?"
"I don't care."
Dan picked up the guitar with equal care. One of the guards picked up the drum, but not before casting a few silent spells with his wand.
He goggled. "It is a mastery class conjuration."
"How long will it last?" asked Dan curiously.
"I honestly couldn't say. My own last hours. I've seen those that last days. These? Weeks perhaps?"
Emma said, "Then we will watch over them until they can come home and play them again."
The guard and Dan nodded as they made their way back to the house.
The five ended up in a forest with a large stream running through it.
"Where are we?" Sarah asked.
"The forest of Dean. I stopped here with Hermione once."
Harry pulled out his wand. "Expecto Patronum." The spectral stag appeared, though it kept wanting to shift to something not clearly defined, before it finally settled.
Harry told it, "Find Neville. Ask him how to get to his house. Tell him we need help to save children."
The stag ghosted away.
Thirty seconds later three aurors appeared.
The four were instantly linked. Phoebe took the lead and tore into the first's mind while freezing the other two.
She said, "He does this of his own free will. They all do. They want you dead for helping to kill Voldemort and the rest."
All three dropped to the ground brain dead and then actually dead a short time later.
"Shit," Sarah said.
Phoebe asked curiously, "Would you have us leave people alive that wish to kill us?"
"No, its just scary okay?"
Celeste said, "We know."
Phoebe said, "He did not suffer. We have been tortured. We would not inflict that upon others."
Sara asked, "Can you please just let me try to stun the next batch? I have prisoner portkeys. We can't just kill, if it is avoidable."
Mindee said, "We are unsure about this. We checked thoroughly for any hope of redemption or change and found none."
"Please, just work with me here. I can forget about these, but if you keep this up you may turn people against you."
Harry said, "I understand what you are saying. Hermione would say the same, but they killed her. Dumbledore would give people endless chances. We will try to stun them so you can try. If they escape we will not risk this again. Hermione might be alive today if I had hesitated less."
"I understand. Really I do, but we have rules, and while you can be certain, the people that see your actions will not be. They will look for reasons to hate you."
All four said at once, "We understand."
Sarah said, "Never again admit if you can avoid it, that only one of you is truly magical. It may help from time to time."
"We understand this as well."
Sarah nodded, unsurprised.
Three minutes later another five appeared. Harry and Sara fired stunners. The other three also fired stunners but directly from their open hands. All went down.
Phoebe asked, "Satisfactory?"
"Thanks. Keep us covered while I search their bodies and portkey them."
She summoned a half dozen portkeys off them and left them float to the ground beside them. She floated them into two piles and dropped a coin on each before saying, "Lock em up!"
The piles vanished.
She transfigured the other three into rocks and sunk them in the ground before casting a dozen stunners into the forest. She also sunk the portkeys.
They were left alone until a great barn own returned with an envelope. It contained a picture of Longbottom manner as well as apparition coordinates. The letter inside read, "Harry, boy I'm glad you are alive. Your welcome to come here. I'll have to walk you across the wards. My grand doesn't want to risk making any changes to them. Come when you can."
Harry said, "They are tracking apparition signatures, or at least big ones. I'd rather not lead them to Neville."
Sarah said, "Well, I can apparate plus one other to those coordinates. They are not far, though no, that won't help. It will still be detected."
Phoebe suggested, "Apparate into the sky, several hundred feet up. We can control the descent."
"Can you really?" asked Sarah.
Celeste nodded.
They formed a circle appearing in the air five hundred feet above and nearly a mile away from Neville's home. All five flew towards it, propelled by the combined power of Harry and the girls. A few minutes later they gently touched down outside the Longbottom estate.
Neville goggled at their entrance from behind the wards.
"Hey Neville."
"Harry." He shook his head. "Only you. Where is Hermione?"
"I'm sorry Neville. She killed Voldemort, but she didn't make it."
"He is truly dead then. I'm sorry to hear about Hermione, but I still need to check you. Tell me about what happened to Umbridge when we went to the DoM."
"She got captured by the Centaurs."
Neville reached out and pulled Harry across. "Is everyone else okay to pull across?"
"Yes."
He pulled the others across one at a time. When they were in he said, "Come on. Gran will want to be in on the planning."
A few seconds after they started walking they heard one large thud in the distance.
Phoebe muttered, "Guess we don't need to stun them."
Sarah sighed, but nodded.
Harry had seen this formidable witch a few times in his life. She seemed to have gone from well aged iron to steel. Both her and her grandson listened closely as Harry explained events.
When it was over she spoke. "So, that bastard takes another one of our loved ones." She got up to refill her drink. As she was pouring she suddenly stopped.
"You said these three are experts in the mind arts?"
Celeste answered. "Not as you know the term, but yes, and yes we will try."
"I haven't even asked the question yet!" she said irritated.
Mindee said, "Apologies, but to us you practically shouted it."
Neville asked, "Do you mean trying to save my parents? They are here now. We couldn't risk them at St. Mugnos anymore. We managed to hire a healer to take care of them."
Harry said, "Yes, we can try to help them. Let's go see them."
They walked to the other side of the manor where a dark skinned young woman with a page boy haircut was just exiting a room. Seeing the group, she turned to face them.
Augusta said, "Let me introduce our healer friend. Her name is Sharon Davis."
"Please to meet you," the four said at once, followed shortly by Sarah's own.
Sharon replied, "Um. Likewise."
Augusta asked, "Is there anything new?"
"No, though I worry with only me to tend them. I am not a full healer. I may miss something."
Augusta replied. "You were the best we could find in Britain and we thank you for your service."
Mindee walked up to her. "Would you mind if I briefly touched your knowledge of the patient? I can see some of it now, but your shields are better than most."
Sharon blinked. "Um, can't I just tell you?"
Mindee shrugged. "That will lack detail, but it would help."
"Well we have only had them here for the last ten months. They are perhaps a bit weaker than when we got them from St. Mugnos, but not observably so. The neural damage remains and continues to not respond to treatment. I have studied it considerably while I have been here. I can show you exactly what is wrong."
Harry said, "We really need your help. I apologize. I know it is rude of us, but will you please let us see your thoughts on the subject? We do not have the medical knowledge you have."
"You are certain this is necessary to treat my patients?"
Phoebe said, "It is, at least if there is any hope of doing so soon."
Augusta asked, "Please."
"Okay."
Four sets of eyes glowed though less than a minute later a fifth set was filled with a dim version of the same blue white light.
A few minutes after Sharon's eyed returned to normal and then several seconds later so did the others.
"Whoa! That was a rush," exclaimed Sharon.
Mindee said, "Thank you. It was an honor. Should you wish it, speak with me some time and I will show you a bit of my own art."
"Did you really learn everything about healing?"
Celeste said, "No, we only focused on what was needed to understand and to heal Frank and Alice. Going beyond that would be incredibly rude and also needlessly hard on your own mind."
"Oh." Sharon blinked a few times. "We'll my shields seem to be coming back normally, or a bit better actually."
Mindee said, "It is impossible to not be changed by the touch of another mind, let alone four. If it is kind, the change can and should be for the better." She added a moment later, "I think Neville's mother is the least damaged."
Sharon said, "That was my thought as well."
Harry gestured with his wand and the mattress Alice was sleeping on rose up and gently relocated to the middle of the room. The four circled around it. A spot opened between Harry and Mindee.
Mindee asked Sharon, "Please join us in the circle."
She looked dubious at it. She said, "I thought you got what you needed before."
Mindee said. "We did and we didn't. There is a difference between first hand and second hand knowledge. Harry's magic is what would have to heal without your help. It does not know healing like your own does, save the bit it learned from you. It could not do as good a job here."
"Okay." She stepped into the circle.
Five sets of eyes glowed with blue white light as a representation of Alice's brain shimmered above her body, with many small parts of it glowing red showing the damage inflicted.
Cool while light caressed the image and also Alice's head. It took time. It was several minutes before the first red spots faded and almost two hours before they all vanished. The link dropped seconds later.
Sharon said, "That was amazing!" She pulled out her own wand and repeated her usual diagnostic. In the next bed Frank woke and looked around dumbly. Oddly, he spent quite a bit more time looking at Alice and Neville.
Augusta asked, "Does that mean she is healed?"
Celeste said, "No, unfortunately not. We need to try to repair the psychic damage, which is where Neville and his Grandmother come in."
Sharon said, "Actually, I'm going to recommend we just give themtime. That was amazing, but better to let their own magic have a crack at it now that things are getting back to normal."
Augusta asked, "Is there any harm in waiting?"
Celeste answered. "No. There shouldn't be. I wouldn't think the psychic damage would heal on its own, but magic is odd. I, no we do not know."
"Then we wait. Can you help my son as well?"
Mindee smiled. "We can."
They repeated the process for Frank. The representation of his brain showed fully healed when they finished.
Dinner was served by the Longbottom elves. Augusta was the first to bring up business. "How can we help you in your mission?"
Harry said, "We need is some place with good wards to put the kids we are going to try to save. They don't have to last forever, since the ICW is helping, but we would like to have a day or so of safety, just in case."
"Our wards should last a lot longer than that. They have been trying to break them down for the past year and a half and have failed."
Harry said, "Good. Now can I tell the others to meet here?"
Frank's mother answered. "Of course, as long as each can be verified before they are helped across our wards."
Sarah said, "Between us we should be able to verify most and the rest can no doubt be verified by those. What we need most are portkeys. Can you make some directly inside?"
"What you ask endangers our wards. Still, the inbound portkey wards can be lowered slightly to allow portkeys I make in. If I do this for you, then it must be for a limited time."
Sara said, "That is fine. We can work with that. The main goal is to get the kids and maybe anyone retreating out. No more, no less."
"Portkeys for a hundred plus will take some time, particularly through the wards, even lowered slightly like they must be. I can make a portkey that will take four. Will thirty do?
"It should."
Neville asked, "Can I help?"
"I'm sorry Neville. The war wards are active. They limit portkey creation to the acting head. Even if I stepped down officially, it would just be you making them all, and you lack the experience to do so safely. A failed portkey with the war wards active will not bounce. They will die painfully."
Sarah whistled. "I didn't know wards like that were allowed anymore. I presume they are recovering most of their energy from the uninvited guests before they are killed, hence why they haven't broken."
Augusta shrugged. "The wards are older than the law."
Harry said, "Okay, we will contact everyone. After that I'm going to do what I promised not to do."
Neville asked curiously, "What is that?"
"Make some more marbles."
"Did you lose some?" Neville joked badly.
Phoebe said softly, though with more than a bit of glee and anticipation, "We will. We will."
Sharon awoke as she felt the tingle of her medical ward indicating that Frank Longbottom had woken up in the night. She felt a second telling her that Alice had woken up as well. She analyzed what she could feel and could not help but smile.
She walked quickly out of her room and down the stairs till she got to the master bedroom where their beds were. Frank Longbottom held a wand towards her. Alice was just behind him.
"Who are you? What are you doing in our home?"
"My name is Sharon Davis. I am a student of the healing arts. Madam Longbottom hired me to care for you."
"Explain," he commanded.
"The Lestrange brothers and Bellatrix Lestrange attacked where you were hiding. I do not know the exact details, though I know you were both tortured into insanity through the use of the Cruciatus curse."
"How long?" gasped Alice in a scratchy voice.
"It has been just over nine years."
Both Longbottoms fell against the bed before rearranging themselves into a sitting position. The wand in Frank's hand kept facing her the entire time.
"Neville?" asked Frank.
"He is well. I can go get him for you if you wish, but I would prefer you take the time to read the information stored in your bottom dresser drawer."
"What information?" asked Alice.
"Do you think Augusta would not record everything for a day like today?"
Alice rushed to open the drawer. She pulled out a very thick leather bound book, but left behind many small tubes carefully stacked alone. She muttered, "Memories."
She opened the book and started reading. "Frank you have to see this."
"I need to talk to my mother."
"I ask that you delay that till the morning. She has exhausted herself making portkeys that will work with the War Wards active."
"What?" asked Frank. "We didn't even do that when… We went into hiding. The law was newly passed and..."
Alice snapped, "We sure as hell ought to have done so. We wouldn't have missed nine years of our son's life!"
Frank asked, "Why is she making portkeys?"
"I do not know all the details but Harry Potter and some others are going to try to go rescue a hundred odd children."
"What? That monster still lives?"
"No. Again I do not know the details, but Voldemort is dead. One of Harry's friends killed him. They helped me heal you. In truth they did most of it I think. They thought they would have to do more, but your strong magic and will to live did the rest. I do need to examine you at some point though."
"Examine Alice. I warn you that if you harm her."
"I am a healer sir. Even though those bigots at St. Mugno's refused to hire a muggleborn. Even if I haven't ever been given the oaths I refuse to forsake them! Now I've spent almost a year of my life tending to you and trying to heal you only to have all my work made moot by these others. Let me at least finish my job!"
Alice grinned. "I like her."
Frank nodded. He lowered, but did not put away his wand as Sharon carefully examined her.
Ten minutes later she said, "You are well to the best of my knowledge. I highly recommend you go to to a senior healer specializing in the mind arts and verify this. There are some minor things, but nothing we can't deal with now that you can eat and exercise more easily."
Frank handed Alice the wand he had found. The wand let out a burst of cheerful sparks. She said dryly, "Thank you for returning my wand."
"Mine was missing," he muttered. He then added, "Now me."
She repeated her testson him. "Results are the same in your head. You were held under longer. Your body is another matter. You are beyond all modern anti-cruciatus potions, yet the damage remains. It needs more attention from the group that healed you, but you should be able to use it. I assume you remain under pain?"
"I can deal with it."
"Stubborn man," added Alice fondly.
"I simply stated the truth," added Frank stubbornly.
Alice took her own wand and began casting a similar series of detection spells. Her face grew grim. She then cast another complicated charm. Suddenly Alice's face grew pained and Frank's relaxed.
"What did you do?" Frank asked.
"It is an old charm that Lily found. By sharing my magic with you for a time I can share your pain. It may help heal you."
"You shouldn't do that."
"I agree," chimed in the healer.
Alice glared at her.
"I haven't cleared you to do that level of magic, let alone rare dangerous medical charms."
"Tough," replied Alice.
"I'm going to go get Neville. He deserves to know, but you should not keep him up long. It may be a very long day tomorrow."
"No," commanded Frank. "If danger comes tomorrow then we shall not weaken anyone by waking them. Give us whatever you can in case we have to fight tomorrow. I need my own wand too, if you know where it is."
"I do not know where you wand is. Medically what you ask is very close to breaking the medical oath."
"Which you admitted to not having sworn," replied Frank.
"True, but it doesn't matter. My advice will not change. There is a strengthening potion I can give you. I was considering giving you anyway if you recovered. It will take me much of the rest of the night to prepare it. That is the best I can do. Anything more harsh might set you back and help no one."
Alice said, "I suspect I know the one. I will help you make it, since I doubt I could sleep more anytime soon anyway."
"As you wish, though I ask you not to use magic that can be avoided, at least till you can be checked out by a senior healer."
Alice asked, "Do you doubt your skills so much?"
Sharon said bitterly, "St. Mugno's said I wasn't good enough to treat anyone. How would you feel?"
Alice said sadly, "It seems so little has changed. It may have even gotten worse."
Frank said, "If all you said is true, and I believe it is, then a debt is owned. You will not lack employment, and if we can get this mess straightened out, then maybe we can get St. Mugno's to reconsider."
Alice mused, "Or we could go with Lily's plan and setup a parallel hospital, staffed by the best and brightest we can get."
"Agreed. The potters deserve that much in gratitude for honor and service. How fairs their child? You said he saved us."
They talked for much of the night, but the potion got made and it did help. No one in their little group got much sleep, but, somehow, they were still ready for the new day that was to come.
Author's Notes: Please consider reviewing or following. Also, if anyone is looking for a version of Scarborough Fair, well I quite like the one by Celtic Woman's Hayley Westenra on Youtube. A more accurate one was done by Simon and Garfunkel. There is also a version by the Gothard Sisters which is what I originally thought of when I wrote this.
