As Mystic Falls prepares for a festival to celebrate the passing of a comet, Vicki Donovan is in the hospital recovering from the attack that she can barely remember. Kai goes to the hospital and tries to use his abilities to discover the truth about the night before. Meanwhile, Bonnie is overwhelmed with thoughts about Kai, while her friend encourages her to pursue the new kid.
Dear Diary,
I do not have a schoolgirl crush on a boy. I do not have a crush on a sad boy, who dresses like the lead singer from All Time Low. But there's something about that aloof attitude and protective nature of his. Oh, what am I going on about, I don't stand a chance with him. I think Caroline plans on making a move soon. But forget all that. Vicki Donovan was attacked by the same thing that killed that couple a few nights ago. I can't even worry about a boy, when Matt's sister is in the hospital. But I must admit, there's something strange going on in Mystic Falls. This is only the beginning.
When school finally came around again on Monday, Bonnie did not want to get out of her nice, warm bed. Grams had yelled and Bonnie had murmured in discontent at being risen. She wallowed in the shower, practically numb, and had thrown on the first pieces of clothing she could find.
In the kitchen, Grams was busy dishing out scrambled eggs. There was wholewheat toast and orange juice.
"Hello baby, are you alright?" Grams handed her a plate, and Bonnie thanked her.
"No Grams." Picking up her fork. Bonnie started eating, forcing the food down.
Grams raised an eyebrow at her granddaughter. "What is this about?"
Blinking at the resonance in her grandmother's voice, the younger Bennett paused from her consumption of breakfast. "Matt's sister…"
"That poor girl, and Matt." Grams was using her reasonable voice. "He has so much on his plate already. His airhead mother still hasn't returned home."
"Nope, Matt's on his own right now," Bonnie answered without emotion.
Grams took a long, cautious sip from her mug. "Bonnie, I really want to talk to you about our family."
The hairs on Bonnie's neck rise and she could feel anger bubbling under the surface of her calm demeanor.
"Grams…" Bonnie struggled and forced herself to take a deep breath and remain calm.
"Child, this is important. Our ancestry and legacy." Grams said with a tight sort of control which differs from Bonnie's father, who usually starts off screaming profanity.
Bonnie was quick to retort, "What legacy? The Bennetts were basically slaves to the Founding Families, and no one in this shithole town ever wants to admit the truth, including you."
"Bonnie, don't take that tone with me." Gram said in a voice that made Bonnie flinch. "You know the comet is coming soon. This is the first sign of impending doom coming back to Mystic Falls."
"Grams, please. I have school today and there's a lot going on. I don't wanna hear about witchcraft or being a seer and whatever impending doom that's coming back." The unamused look she received in return made her throw her hands in the air in submission. "I'm not looking to be any more different from my peers than I already am."
"Is something else going on, Bonnie?" Grams broached, her voice slow and confused.
Bonnie stared at grandmother blankly for a second. "No," It was a lie. "Later Grams."
Kai knew he had to come up with an excuse for his ghostliness last night. Bonnie must be pissed. He's not sure why he cared so much about her opinion of him. He just met the girl. When he walked through the busy hallway of the high school. He spotted her and her blonde friend.
"Please feel free to conjure up the name and number of that beefcake I met at the grill last night."
"I don't even know what he looked like, Caroline," Bonnie made a face. "Wait, didn't you talk to him?"
"I don't know. I was so drunk."
Kai decided to just approach them.
"Hey, Bonnie," He leaned against the locker and regarded her.
They were standing directly in the middle of the hallway by their lockers. Kai wasn't too worried about class. He had a free period next, and he planned to procrastinate whilst pretending he was actually doing some form of work.
"New kid, hello. I missed you last night," Caroline purred, which made his stomach turn. "No more running out on me, okay?"
"Sure." Kai's blue eyes tracked Bonnie all the way down, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Hey, I wanted to apologize for ditching you. I had to take Jo home."
Bonnie looked fretful. Her bottom lip was caught between her teeth, and her nose was wrinkled up with worry. "It's fine, is Jo okay? I know she was there helping Matt keep Vicki alive."
That made Kai feel pleasantly pleased. "Yeah, that's kind of her thing. She plans on being a doctor one day. Jo's not so squeamish with blood."
Bonnie looked at him then, really looked, and he wondered what she saw. "I get it. You were looking out for your sister."
Eyes narrowing, Caroline contemplated Bonnie like she's hunting for some kind of lie or an oversight.
"Look, if you don't mind, I wanna give you my number." He gives her a sticky note with his phone number written on it. "You can call me, even if it's about Mr. Tanners' upcoming quiz. I know you suck at history, which just happens to be my best subject." He rubbed the back of his neck, shuffling his feet and wincing when his chucks squeaked on the linoleum flooring.
Bonnie is barely holding back her mirth. "I don't suck that bad."
They both laughed at her wording, while Caroline watched with a brow cocked.
"I'm gonna run, but call me." Kai tells her as he shuts his locker door, brassy hung his jacket over his arm and smiled a bit tight; both girls stared at him and Bonnie smiled back before parting ways.
"We need to find out what attacked that girl the other night." He said when he finally sees his sister, four periods in, sitting at a table in the library.
One of Jo's eyebrows shot up on her forehead. "Malachai, please, I'm drowning in homework."
"It's only the first week of school." Kai sat on the edge of the desk Jo was working on.
Jo scowled, jaw clenching beneath her skin. "I have two AP classes, unlike you."
Kai banged his fist on the desk, making Jo's papers shoot everywhere. "Josie, we have more pressing things to deal with."
There was a loud 'shhhh' from a couple of rows away, and both Kai and Jo broke off the fierce staring contest they'd been having to look towards the source.
All Jo could do to not retaliate was roll her eyes and straight up in her seat while trying to reorganize her work. "Malachai, I had some time to think about this. It's probably best if we just stay out of it. If it's serious, I'm sure Uncle Chris will tell us."
"No, he won't, we need to go looking into this." He hissed, his eyes flicking back to the librarian to check she wasn't onto them.
"And what do you plan on doing once you get your answer?" Jo asked quickly, hands fluttering. "I am not spending my junior year chasing goblins and ghouls in this Halloweentown. I have college and my future to worry about."
Kai could feel his eyes twitching in frustration. "We need to know what we're dealing with here."
"Neither one of us is equipped to do anything, in case you forgot, we have had little practice in the wicca area."
At this point, he could practically feel the frustration coming off Jo.
"And whose fault is that?" Kai asked, leaning heavily on the elbow he's got on the table.
"Don't start this again," Jo hissed, giving Kai the dirtiest look she could muster.
Kai rolled his eyes and finally looked down. He smiled mockingly. "You're the one who wants to turn your back on who you are, who we are."
"I'm just trying to make something of my life, so yeah, I want nothing to do with that life anymore." Jo said, and Kai's brows flew up. "I want to live, and I want you to live. We have a second chance. Please don't blow it because you wanna play Van Helsing."
"You know what? That's exactly what I'm going to do," Kai shook his head, scooting back slightly, his stomach turning over at the mere suggestion. "With or without your help."
Jo scoffed, going back to her reading, while Kai moved away from her table.
Before he could exit the library, Kai caught wind of chit-chat between two familiar voices coming from the corner of the library.
"Vicki's lucky, she's okay."
It was the Gilbert girl's voice, and even though Kai knew it was wrong, he couldn't stop himself from listening on.
"I know. I was so worried about her, especially after hearing about some missing campers."
Kai couldn't help but peek around to see Elena Gilbert wrapping her arms tightly around a blond guy. It was Vicki Donovan's brother. He had his face hidden in Gilbert's hair.
"Did she at least see the animal that attacked her?"
The blond stuck his head up, and Kai could see the tears tracks glistening from the bright sunlight peeking in. "She thinks a vampire attacked her." He sniffled loudly, letting out a hollow laugh.
Kai perked up at that. Vampire? His uncle's words from last hit him. You'll soon learn that there are more than just witches out here. Mystic Falls is a breeding ground for supernaturals.
But vampires? There's no way.
"I think she was doped up when I spoke to her." Donovan buried his head in Gilbert's neck again. "I'm going to the hospital after school to check on her, maybe get the actual story from her about last night."
Just like that, Kai had plans after school, and it wasn't with that cute Bennett girl.
"Grams tried to press me on some impending doom coming because of the comet tonight." Bonnie said miserably, shredding her sticky toffee cake into little pieces. "According to her, the last time it passed over Mystic Falls, there was a lot of death. Said we're due for a bed of paranormal activities."
The girls all got a seat at the table near the very back, where they were hidden from the rest of the customers that went to their school.
Caroline wrinkled her nose. "That kooky old witch. I keep telling you, Bon, you need to hide all the alcohol in that house."
Elena took a swig from her cola and set it on the table. "Maybe Sheila is onto something. Haven't you been seeing all the missing people and death on the news, Caroline?"
"No." Caroline said and looked at her menu.
Bonnie snorted. "That's not surprising."
"Can we talk about something more important, like Elena and Matt getting back together," Caroline said impatiently. Bonnie shot her a sharp look, which the blonde ignored.
"Not this again."
Caroline made a dismissive gesture at Bonnie. "His sister is laid up in a hospital bed, and I heard from Tiki that you and him were getting cozy in the library."
Elena glared at the blonde, her lips pursed in annoyance. "You have your lackey spying on me."
"She wasn't spying on you. She was in the library studying and spotted you." Bonnie gave Elena a look, which made the other girl snicker. "Just admit you still have feelings for him."
"The last thing on Elena or Matt's mind is getting back together." Bonnie injected. "Like you said, his sister is in the hospital. He's too worried about her right now."
"Didn't you see how the new girl was all over him last night? Better make your move quick." Caroline said, eyes scanning the back of menu.
"Jo was helping his sister, who was bleeding from her neck." Bonnie rolled her eyes. "Let it go Caroline."
"Okay then Miss. Bennett," Caroline focused her gaze on Bonnie, "Let's talk about the new guy making a pass at you in the hallway today."
"Kai did what?"
"He gave her his number and tried to set up a little study date with her." Caroline commented, and Bonnie glared at her.
"Really?" Elena questioned cheerfully. She slung her arm around Bonnie's shoulder.
Alarm bells started shrieking in the back of Bonnie's mind. "Don't gang up on me, Elena."
Elena bit her lip. For a moment it reminded Bonnie of her Grams, and of her mother. "I'm not, but this is a good thing."
She groaned and ran her hands through her hair. "I don't…"
The smirk vanished from Elena's face. "None of that shy shit, Bonnie Bennett. This guy likes you, and you clearly like him back."
Caroline turned to look at her with that expression Bonnie was very familiar with. "Plus he's hot, and got that whole Jess Mariano thing going on."
Bonnie felt her cheeks grow hot. "Tamable bad-boy, with a heart of gold."
"The best kind." Caroline gave her a salacious look, complete with a wink. "I'd hop on that if I were you."
Elena nodded sympathetically, patting Bonnie on the shoulder. "Call him, secure that date, before someone else does." She said, gesturing to Caroline.
"He's a bit young for me," Caroline offered with an eyebrow wiggle. "I'm more interested in finding my mystery man from last night. I'm planning on taking a ride on his disco stick."
Bonnie and Elena groaned in unison.
Kai's heart was hammering as he pushed the door of Vicki Donovan's hospital room open. The old, yet familiar churning in his stomach had started when he first saw Matt Donovan in the hallway, talking to the nurse.
Kai paused, looking across at Vicki, who was eyes were fluttering in a sleepy surprise.
"Who the hell are you?"
Kai blinked, then blinked again. "Umm, Candy Striper." He lied.
Vicki's eyes focused on him, analyzing him for a moment. "I thought Candy Stripers were all women."
Kai cleared his throat. He'd rehearsed this part, "Mostly, I'm just filling in for my sister, Jo. She tried to save you last night."
A still beat settled over the room.
"The new girl, right? My brother told me about that." Vicki rubbed a hand over her eyes. "I blacked out so hard."
"Yeah, you lost a lot of blood," the churning stilled as he stood at Vicki's bedside. "I wanted to ask, what happened last night?"
Vicki looked tired. Her face was sort of rumpled looking and her hair was plastered to her forehead, like it was hot in the room, even though the air conditioning was turned up way too high.
"Hey," Kai said softly. Vicki just squinted up at him. "What attacked you?"
For a moment, Vicki was silent, but there seemed to be a million thoughts running over her face. "An… an animal. What else could it have been?" she whispered after a minute.
Kai's jaw tensed, and he tried to keep his voice calm. "Are you sure? Maybe it wasn't an animal, maybe…"
"It was, okay. Some sort of animal in the woods attacked me. I swear, I swear."
Vicki was shaking. Kai knew he needed her to calm down.
Moving closer, Kai reached into his pocket and pulled out his mother's calming amulet. The crystal glowed in his palm, and he felt a rush of power. "Leniret animo," Kai softly chanted under his breath, squeezing down on the magical amulet. Vicki's eyes widened. "Confitere veritatem tuam."
Sparks travel from Kai's hands and crack over his fingertips like current electricity, and he inhales digging deeper. "Vicki, what attacked you in the woods?"
She didn't hesitate this time. "A vampire."
Kai blinked. The truth was out there.
"Dediscere et oblivisci," He chanted once more. "It was an animal that attacked you. It came out and jumped you. Then you blacked out. That's all you remember."
He hated himself for messing around with her memory.
"That's all I remember."
He frowned and shifted uncomfortably. "I was never here."
Kai made his exit before her brother returned. So vampires exist. And who else knows what's out there, creeping in those woods. Now he just needed proof.
Bonnie walked around Mystic Falls Town Square finding that her mood was far from good. She was handing out flyers for the Night of Comet Festival. Bonnie hadn't managed to get one person to take one, but that wasn't why she was in such a terrible mood.
"Tonight, it's the night of the comet! Would you like a program?"
"Did you call Kai yet?" Elena asked without preamble, stepping up next to her.
Bonnie was quiet, her mind working quickly. "Umm, I was busy catching up with homework."
"It's the first week of school. You're not that dedicated." Elena handed her pamphlet out to an elder couple. "Come on, Bon, if you don't make your move, some other girl will. I heard Amber Bradley gushing about him at the gym today."
A painful smile split her lips. "Amber 'Meek' Bradley, I can't see her as my competition."
Elena snorted loudly. "I don't know. She did get to second base last year with Tyler, I think."
Bonnie sighed, exasperated. "Surprise, surprise."
Elena gave her a hard look. "Why are you holding back? I thought you wanted to date and get a boyfriend."
"It's just hard, like whenever I'm with a boy I like, it's hard for me to say anything cool, or witty, or at all…" Bonnie struggled to explain, earning a disapproving frown from her friend. "It's difficult for me, Elena. I'm not like you. And after seeing how badly things ended between you and Matt."
"Bonnie, you cannot live your life through me." Elena's eyes softened. "Do you wanna hear my philosophy?"
Bonnie swallowed hard. Words abandoned her. "Sure."
A soft smile of fond reflection tickled Elena's mouth. "Life is short. Why waste time being all shy? Why worry about some guy and if he's gonna laugh at you? You know? Seize the moment, because tomorrow you might be dead."
"That's dark." Bonnie took a shaky breath. "What if I'm not his type?"
"He gave you his number. He's interested. Stop trying to psych yourself out of this." Elena smacked her arm. "Invite him to the festival tonight."
"Fine." Bonnie bit out as she pulled her cellphone out of her pocket. "Seize the moment."
Bonnie:
Did you know that originally discovered nearly 5 centuries ago, the comet hasn't been over Mystic Falls in over 145 years?
Kai:
What the fuck?
Who is this?
Bonnie:
The girl who you gave your number to yesterday.
Kai:
Bonnie. Sorry about that, the comet. I heard Mr. Tanner talking about it.
Bonnie:
There's a festival tonight. Everyone's going to be there. You should come, you and Jo, of course.
Kai:
I'll see if she's up for it. Thanks.
"Well?" Elena asked cautiously, gauging her reaction.
Her mouth quirked a bit. "It's definitely not a no." Bonnie shrugged her shoulders.
Elena chuckled with a relieved expression. "Good, you can come over and we can get dressed together. I have to make sure you wear something bewitching to the male gaze."
It was times like this when Bonnie was grateful for this new, improved Elena Gilbert.
"I'm surprised you wanted to come to this." His sister's voice broke through his thoughts. "Not your scene anymore, hanging with the cool kids."
The twins were walking through the Mystic Falls Town Square, where there were small lanterns posted up. The dim light of these made the environment tenderly warm and romantic.
"Better than being stuck in the house with Chris all night." Kai replied crisply, eyes narrowed.
He listened to Jo sigh, so audible in the air. "You know he's just looking out for us," Jo patted Kai's arm consolingly. "He's a cool guy once you stop being an asshat to him."
A cool breeze ruffles his hair, and the sweet-spicy aroma of late flowers mingles with the smells of wood-smoke and grass with damp wool. "What's the point? He won't even be honest with us about what's out there."
Jo raised a single eyebrow at him, clearly unimpressed. "Not this again, Malachai. Please let it go."
"No," Kai said with an eye roll. "I went to the hospital and talked to Vicki Donovan."
"Are you crazy?" Jo's face twisted with indignation. "What if someone saw you there?"
Kai tossed his head. "I wiped her memory."
Jo shot him a dirty glare and cracked her knuckles purposefully. "You used magic? How?"
"I siphon some magic from mom's old amulet." Kai took a step forward, his fists clenched, "Look, Donovan told me what attacked her the other night… it was a …"
"You came."
There was Bonnie Bennett with a candle in her hand. Kai felt himself stiffen, his head jerking towards the girl as his eyes flared.
Jo blinked for a moment before leaning to the side to look around from her aggressive brother to the newcomer. "Bonnie, hey." Jo greeted the other girl. "Do you guys have any more candles?"
"Elena's hanging some more out," Bonnie pointed out her brunette friend, who was standing with Matt Donovan.
"Cool, I'll go get one." Jo turned on her heels and stalked off into the crowds.
"Hey," Bonnie laughed vividly. Her brown hair was bone straight with a slight side part, she was dressed in acid-washed jeans and a black shimmering tube top, sporting short boots.
An icy chill went down Kai's spine. "Hi."
Four paper lanterns in rich autumn hues add their soft glow to the fire's radiance, announcing their presence, their place.
Kai tapped his chin thoughtfully. "So, did you know the comet has been traveling across space for thousands of years, all alone?"
That got him a mischievous grin. "Really, my Grams believes it's a harbinger of evil."
"I think it's just a ball of... snow and ice, trapped on a path that it can't escape." Kai said, regaining his composure. "You must think I'm pretty lame."
Bonnie laughed, a clear, rich sound. "Not at all. You're just different from the guys here. It's a good different, though."
Unabashed, Kai grinned. "You're nothing like the girls in Portland."
Bonnie peered at him. "Is that a good thing?"
"It's different. I don't mind it at all." Kai told her, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jacket.
"Look, I'm not sure if you're into me or Caroline," Bonnie said, shaking her head with a sudden ferocity., "I know I can be awkward and tedious. Caroline is far easier than me, and very experienced."
Kai frowned and considered it. "Why do people keep thinking I'm into Caroline?" he asked, mostly to himself. "I don't even like blondes."
Bonnie's green eyes shone with something unreadable. "Then what do you like?" she asked deliberately.
"Loyalty, I value it. Intelligence is a must. I like a girl who's very caring and down-to-earth." Kai was getting uneasy, fidgeting, pulling his hands out of his pockets and clasping them behind his back. "Hair color isn't the issue I have with Caroline. She's just not my type."
Bonnie stared at him wide eyed, and didn't move. "Oh, well. You have good standards."
Kai chuckled, running a hand through his hair, his claws scratching against his scalp. "I'd hope so."
Bonnie bit her lip slightly, then nodded. "You should probably go get a candle. I need to check in on my friends."
"Okay, see you around." Kai crossed his arms awkwardly as he heard Bonnie chuckling quietly.
"I'll hold you to that."
Bonnie turned to find the rest of her friends and Kai made his way over to Donovan to get a candle.
Kai held out his hand. "Hey, man."
Matt hesitated a moment before he shook Kai's hand. "Hey, umm, I saw you at the hospital yesterday."
His stomach dropped. It felt like he was falling. "Did you?"
"Why were you there?" Matt asked, tilting his head to the side slightly, eyes studying him.
"Jo wanted me to get an application for her. She's signing up for volunteer work." The words leave his mouth before he even has a chance to think about what he was saying.
"Your sister was pretty amazing the other night. She was so calm, like she'd done this before." Matt sent him an approving look.
Kai's palms are sweaty and his breath catches in his throat. "Sort of. We had a big family, lots of little siblings."
Matt leaned forward, lowering his voice. "Sorry, man. Chris told me what happened to your family. I promise I haven't said a word to anyone else about it. This town keeps no secrets."
Kai looked at him in disbelief. "Appreciate it," he drawled. The full gravity of what Matt had said only just sunk in.
"And you know Bonnie is special. She's not like the other girls in Mystic Falls. So don't be stupid and blow it with her."
How is it that Matt Donovan was the most perceptive person in this town?
It's been two weeks since she's been home. Not knowing whether her father was back in town yet. Bonnie couldn't deal with anymore of her grandmother's kookiness about being witches. Bonnie was just not in the mood to listen or argue. Her thoughts were filled with a dark-haired boy with gorgeous blue eyes and an amazing smile.
The street she was on was barely populated, with the exception of a few homeless people strolling around. Her eyes then caught sight of a shadow outline. It was tall, a bit lanky, not much muscle. She could tell it was a man, though.
She stopped dead in her tracks, completely frozen.
"Kai?"
He slowly turned around to face her.
"Do you need a ride?" Bonnie asks, knowing how cold it was tonight. Kai must be tired from walking all the way from the town square.
Kai shivered before hesitating and glancing up at the sky. Nodding, he pulled the door open, sliding into the passenger seat.
"I should tell you, I don't live on the nicer side of town."
"It's Mystic Falls. The bad side isn't that bad unless you live in Grove Hill." She said easily, flippantly. "Plus, I've given Matt a ride home from time to time."
Kai sucked in a breath. "Ahh, well, I'm next door to him."
"I know." Bonnie said, as the car began to move again, peeling away from the curb and sliding off down the dark streets. "Where's Jo?"
"Umm, she hung back with some people." Kai said, voice sounding oddly dissonant as he finally looked up and caught Bonnie's gaze.
"Not in the mood to mingle with us townsfolk." Bonnie's fingers kept moving against the wheel and then the sign flashed in the headlights.
Kai closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "It's not like that. I'm just in a weird space today."
Bonnie swallowed hard. "Same."
When Kai opened his eyes, there was a long, long moment when he wasn't sure where to look or what to do, instead he focused on Bonnie's face. "What's up?"
Bonnie was sad to see the usual sly, playful expression disappear, but the genuine look of concern that replaced it was gratifying.
"Well, I'm finally going back to my home. I need some space from my Grams. It just sucks being home alone when my dad is out of town."
"For work or pleasure?" Kai grinned tiredly at her.
"Work." Bonnie arched her eyebrow at him. "My dad's not like that."
"Like what? Your parents are separated, right?" he asked as Bonnie rolled to a stop at a red light.
"I know my dad. He isn't skipping out on me for someone else. He's not like my mom."
The sneer was no less than Kai deserved.
"Sensitive topic for you," Kai said fondly, "I get it, having high expectations for the parental, only for them to let you down." The red cast forms the stoplight heating his face, and Kai leans on the armrest, coming into her personal space.
Her stomach knotted, but Bonnie made herself nod. "Something like that."
There was a long silence, in which she refused to look at Kai. When Kai cleared his throat, his following words startled Bonnie.
"Is that why you're so closed off?" Bonnie stared at him. Now Kai was the one not making eye contact. He watched the road, lips taught in a thin line. "Unlike your friends, that is. I mean Forbes, she's super aggressive and goes directly at what she wants. Then there's Gilbert, who's confident, and she's not afraid to make the first move. But you, I notice you hold back a lot."
"I'm used to hearing no, and I'm tired of expecting better when all I get is disappointment."
Bonnie stared ahead, gripping the wheel tightly with both hands. Her blue Prius rolled to a halt, feeling Kai's eyes on her now.
"If you give up now, you'll miss out on a lot of new opportunities. One of them could be right around the corner."
Bonnie glanced at him with a double-take, and stopped, half-wary, looking from his eyes to his lips.
"I wanna kiss you, Bonnie." Kai paused, seeing Bonnie's lip twitch, and looks back up at her eyes.
"You wanna do what?" her eyes flickered and moved over to Kai's face, hands forgotten on the steering wheel.
"I wanna kiss you. Do you want me to?"
Bonnie shivered, looking at Kai for a moment before nodding.
They move their bodies as best they can in the confined space. Grabbing the back of her neck firmly as he brought Bonnie in for a kiss. Kai's lips were hot and wet against hers.
Bonnie kissed Kai back with fervor, running her tongue along the curve of Kai's bottom lip. Everything felt charged, pulses thrumming hotly, the intense mix of their scents muddling the air, chasing each other's lips until they were dizzy with the kiss.
Dark shadows.
A shroud of fog.
A crow watches a figure approach a brunette in a cemetery.
Veils of silver and gold shimmering in a broad arc.
A single squawk sounds the area before an attacker pauses in an uneven line in front of the barrier.
Kai drew back first, resting his forehead against Bonnie's as they caught their breath, air spilling back and forth between their mouths.
Bonnie's mind felt foggy, her thoughts struggling with anything beyond what she just saw. Tears gather in the corner of her eyes. She held back, refusing to let them shed. Cold, icy terror clawed up her spine at the touch of Kai.
Then, the disastrously wonderful whirlwind of a boy. He suddenly pulled back, a smirk playing on his lips as he waited for Bonnie's hazy eyes to meet his.
"Not bad for a first-timer." Kai grinned as he reached for the door, quickly turning to hop out of her car before Bonnie could even catch her breath, let alone form a word.
Still sitting there unpleasantly dazed, Bonnie watched as Kai ran up his driveway. She was fretful about watching Kai leave, knowing that whenever she saw him again, that icy terror would possibly return.
AN: Sorry for the wait. Thank you so much for all the support on the last chapter. The next chapter has the arrival of a Salvatore brother, Elena meddling in Bonnie's love life, and Kai getting one step closer to who's attacking the people of Mystic Falls, this time with a witness by his side.
