This is a fanfiction I'm writing for fun. I don't know how long it will hold. It's based on Overlord by Kugane Maruyama. I used materials from the Light Novel, the Bonus Volume, shorts stories released by the author and references from the Game Mass for the Dead. Enjoy!
Momonga, the last member and guild master of Ainz Ooal Gown was sitting upon the Throne of Kings. He had closed his eyes in embarrassment after he made some change in Albedo's settings. A few words that he hoped would soon vanish along with the sole DMMO-RPG he had played. He even wondered if he would ever play another game after Yggdrasil. Maybe there would be an Yggdrasil II but even then it won't be the same. The Yggdrasil he wanted to play was the one with the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick he conquered with his guildmates. He wanted to have his 40 old guildmates and have fun playing with them. He suddenly could remember the memories they had in the game. He looked at the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown in his hand. It was one of the items whose very existence was the combination of the guild collective effort. Even the Throne of Kings, the World Item on which he sat, was the proof of one of their countless adventures together in this version of Yggdrasil. Even if a new version was to be started, he could no longer have those moments because they no longer played the game. Even on the last day only a few showed up and none stayed with him until the shutdown. He reopened his eyes and looked upward, toward the flags with the emblems of his comrades. He recalled their names as he pointed in turn to their respective flag. After the last one, he felt the anger and the feeling of betrayal leave him.
Indeed, they had not betrayed him, they just had to choose. Yggdrasil lasted 12 years, playing for this long would be impossible. Sooner or later, everyone will have to choose between the game and his life in the real world. Many had responsibilities there. All the members of Ainz Ooal Gown were working adults of course but their circumstances could change. Some had to quit because they had more responsibilities at home or they had to allocate more time for their work. One by one, his comrades left for the real world. Momonga or rather Suzuki Satoru was the only one who still logged and even then, he only did so in order to collect money for his guild base upkeep fees. He could not find any fun in playing without his comrades. Sometimes, in the past, their guild members would even log-in just to chat with each other in the Conference Room before logging out.
All this was in the past now but he had to accept it. The dark emotions he had felt until a moment ago were nothing more than a selfish wish to have things stay as he wished. He needed to move on now. He made the resolve in his heart to do something with his life. Maybe find a girlfriend and start a happy family like Touch-Me. Or study and find a better job. He should not stay a loser whose whole life could be resumed as: Working and getting home to play Yggdrasil. Even his income was invested in Yggdrasil, a further proof that he had no other hobby.
"I need to move on." As he said this out loud. Momonga opened his eyes. According to his calculations the forced log out should happen soon enough. He looked at the time in his console.
23:59:51 He closed his eyes and counted with it.
".. It really was fun." He said while waiting for the forced log out. .5 Nothing was happening. He opened his eyes only to be met with a strange scenery.
As far as he could see, plains extended. He was surprised and couldn't help voicing it out loud.
"What's going on?" he had cried out loud but did not expect anyone to respond. He received one anyway and the source was very close by.
"Is something troubling you my Lord?"
Holy shit. He almost exclaimed. His surprise was soon suppressed by some unknown mechanism. It was gone in an instant returning his mind to a level-headed state.
"Oh Albedo. I just noticed the change in our surrounding."
Albedo seemed to notice only then that they were no longer in the Throne Room.
"Do pardon me for not noticing earlier. We seems to have been transported outside of Nazarick, indeed."
Yes. And you seem to have come along. How is that possible? Momonga thought. Albedo was an NPC from the guild base of Ainz Ooal Gown, as such, she could not be moved outside of Nazarick. Only Mercenary NPCs could accompany players during their adventures. NPCs designated to protect a guild base could only move within their assigned guild base and in their designated area only. That being the case, it would be impossible to move her out of the Throne Room. That was why when Momonga logged to collect money for his guild, he had to hire Mercenary NPCs to act as his vanguard while he hunted.
Even if she could be moved outside, that would mean the rules of Yggdrasil have changed. Yggdrasil II maybe? But why would we be teleported somewhere else and without being notified? That can't be. First I need to contact the Game Master. When Momonga tried to reach the GM-call function in his console, he finally realized that he could no longer access it. He was faced with a new reality: this couldn't be Yggdrasil. Could that even be a game at all? Without a console how could any game be played? Momonga had more questions than answers. His mounting fear and panic was suppressed instantly. Huh! As before, my emotions vanished. But even then he was still anxious and that did not seem to be suppressed. Maybe only strong emotions are suppressed. He concluded. Then he remembered that he wasn't here alone. While he was sitting and lost in thought, Albedo was standing to his right with an expression of guilt? How come her face is moving? No game was ever able to properly convey emotions and feelings. If that was possible, emoticons would not be used in games. Facials expression were frozen in games and even a sophisticated DMMO-RPG like Yggdrasil was no exception to the rule.
"Al-be-do" Momonga said while touching his jaw. It was moving according to the words he said. There was only one reason to this: The game has become real. It was the only possible conclusion but also a terrifying one. He was trapped in the game or the game has become reality. Either way, he was now in the avatar he used. Then I need to confirm if I still have the same abilities as in the game or if that has changed as well.
"Yes Lord Momonga." Albedo responded with enthusiasm.
Oh. Yeah. I used her name. Now what to do?
"Can you come closer?"
"Of course." She got closer to him and he extended his bony hand to touch her delicate hand. The moment he made contact, her face distorted, she seemed to be in pain. Then Momonga recalled that his character was an undead Overlord and among his abilities was Negative Touch that inflicted damage to the living on contact. But why did it activate. Is friendly fire enabled now? I need to be careful. That said, he just confirmed that one of his character abilities worked just fine. Normally he would need to go through the console to activate or deactivate such effect but he no longer had access to it. He focused hard and after a moment he sensed he had deactivated his Negative Touch.
"Sorry about that. It seems friendly fire is now enabled and I forgot to turn off Negative Touch."
"It's fine my Lord. This level of pain is trivial compared to the honor of being touched by you." She was starting to blush while saying so.
Momonga wondered what that could mean but quickly refocused on the matter at hand. He placed his hand on her haft. In doing so, he could feel that his sense of touched was dulled, like he was wearing gauntlets on top of his hands. That must be because I'm undead. But more importantly, I can sense her pulse. So I'm not dreaming and she's well alive. That's definitely reality.
"How about now? Nothing weird happened right?"
"No it's fine." She said.
"Alright." He tried to remove his hand but she gripped it. Confuse he asked "What are you doing?"
"Can I hold your hand a little longer?" She asked shyly.
Momonga nodded his head and stayed like that while holding hands with Albedo.
This is awkward to say the least. Thought Momonga. Why is she like that? I just quickly flitted through her setting I didn't read it until the last… then he recalled the last action he had taken before the end of the game. If she is now alive and real, then her setting are … he trailed off, not wanting to let this line of thought end. Because if the NPC before him had been given life, her basic personality traits will be defined by her in-game character setting and he just happened to have included said setting with a strange trait.
After what he estimated to be long enough, he asked Albedo to let go of his hand. She still seemed to not want to comply.
"Albedo, I need to verify a few things as soon as possible. So let go of my hand, please."
"Alright Lord Momonga. May I help you with whatever you are up to?"
Momonga thought for a moment then found something she could do.
"Where did you put your World Item?"
"It is in my inventory. Do you want me to return it to you?"
"No. It's fine. Just wondered where you put it." Momonga let go of the Staff he was holding and it floated next to him as it has been configured. So abilities functions just fine. Items are useable in the same way and Albedo still can access the inventory. What about mine. Momonga tried to access his inventory and was surprised to be able to so as naturally as breathing, not that he should be able to breathe. He retrieved a wand from what seemed to be a small opening in space itself then put it back. Then he looked at the Throne of Kings where he was sitting. When he touched it with the intention of putting it in his storage, it vanished.
That's all set. Next should be spells.
As a level 100 specialized magic caster character, Momonga's sole means of defense was through using magic. He needed to confirm if he could still use magic quickly in order to be able to face unknown treats. He wasn't much worried about it as he had already confirmed that a lot of other things worked fine but he still needed to make sure. He focused on himself as he had done before, when deactivating Negative Touch, to feel his stats. He could get a clear idea of his HP, MP and how to cast a spell.
[Fireball] the spell activated and the Fireball flew from his extended hand toward the empty plains. The feeling of activating his spell naturally without the need to use a long procedure with a console made joy course through his heart but it was abruptly suppressed. Shit! That again.
"Clap. Clap. Clap. Magnificent my Lord."
"It was nothing. More importantly, could you put on your armor? We need to be ready for unknown treats or situations. We also need to get moving soon. We are too exposed here."
Now that his shock was over, Momonga recalled that the place where they were now was ideal for an ambush and given that they were in unknown lands, they might get attacked at any time. First they needed a more isolated place. And they would need to seek information from residents of the area given that he had no idea where he was.
"Right away my Lord."
"Oh and just in case, keep Ginnungagap close by."
"Understood."
Momonga always had his World Item equipped so he didn't need to worry being subjected to the effect of most World Items but if Albedo didn't have one equipped too, she might be targeted. Also, he may need to use her World Item powers if he needed to destroy physical objects. Not that he had anything in particular in mind but the situation might call for destructive power.
"I'm all set. We can leave any time."
"Alright. Let's go… North then."
They have been walking for 10 or 15 minutes. Momonga was baffled by the starry night sky. The moon was fully visible and the stars were shining beautifully. It was a stark contrast with the sky back on earth. Sometime after, he noticed a huge shadow figure in the distant sky. He notified Albedo of it and they stopped in their tracks. They were discussing what it was when they noticed that the figure seemed to get closer.
"Seems like a dragon? What do you think?"
"It should be. Should I take defensive actions?"
"Yes but do not go on offensive until we are being targeted. Maybe we can get some information from it."
"As you wish Lord Momonga."
"And about that, Albedo, you can drop the "Lord" part. Just call me Momonga."
"That would be my honor but wouldn't that be rude to a Supreme Being such as yourself?"
"No it's fine."
"Then." She paused and started acting embarrassed. Well he couldn't be sure because her armor covered her from head to toe. "I will act upon your kindness Momonga. Hee Hee"
Once the figure was within Momonga's field of vision, he almost blacked out. The figure was that of a gigantic dragon. It measured something between 150 and 200 meters in length. Its wings almost hid the night sky. The dragon was silvery and the moon reflecting on it made it look like it was shining. The first thing Momonga thought of when he could clearly make out the figure was: World Enemy.
World Enemies were the most powerful entities of Yggdrasil. They were Bosses designated to be impossibly strong. A legion, six parties of six players, of level 100 could face one and still be wiped out. Even the weakest of them was at least level 100 and a lot of them were dragons. Given its size, Momonga knew this was no ordinary dragon. That's why he thought of a World Enemy. If this was really one, he needed to get out of here and fast. But before he could…
The dragon's breath attack assaulted Albedo standing in front of him.
Seems like we can't escape for now. Let's feel the waters to confirm first and retreat if it's a World Enemy. Now I sounds like Yamaiko. Scary.
[Discern Enemy] Momonga cast. The information he got almost shocked him. This opponent had broken the level 100 cap of Yggdrasil. He wasn't too sure about its exact level given that he wasn't of a sage-type class and was not a specialist of dragons but it was somewhere between 110 and 120. So it seemed to be a World Enemy but… neither its name nor its lore information were displayed. Normally, monsters and particularly Bosses or World Enemies would come with a name or title and a long text about its origin or the mythology surrounding it. So this one technically should be a World Enemy but didn't seem to be one. At least not by Yggdrasil standards. He needed to investigate more.
As Albedo tanked the dragon's breath and was pushed back by it, Momonga cast [Life Essence]. He could see the dragon HP bar and it was indeed high but still far inferior to what a World Enemy, even a weak one, should have. It was a little more than double of what Albedo had but that was it. As if to prove that he was right, when the breath attack ended, Albedo seemed to be fine.
"How much damage did you sustain Albedo."
"About a tenth of my HP is gone but I had only basic defensive skills activated."
"Hm. Hm. Alright. Can you keep it at bay as long as possible? I need to investigate before assisting you."
"Alright." She said as she took defensive measures to protect him.
[Mana Essence] he cast next and was surprised. Their opponent had no MP at all. Only HP. Even pure physical warriors had at least a little bit of MP despite not being casters. Albedo, for instance, despite being a defense oriented character had some MP to use some of her skills. So a World Enemy should have MP too. But none at all meant it was something new. Maybe unique to this place/world with no connection to Yggdrasil.
Alright. Momonga made up his mind.
[Triplet Maximize Magic: Reality Slash] the spell flew toward the dragon and tore through it. With Life Essence still active, Momonga checked on its HP depletion and smiled internally as he saw it decrease more than he had hoped for. I can make it. This is not an enemy who seems resistant to my magic.
The dragon roared in pain and landed in front of Momonga and Albedo.
[Triplet Maximize Magic: Call Greater Thunder] giant lightning bolts pierced the dragon on the ground further reducing its HP and infuriating it. It used its giant tail to strike at Momonga but Albedo intercepted it with a swing of her giant bardiche.
[Maximize Magic: True Dark]
[Triplet Maximize Magic: Vermillion Nova]
Momonga kept the pressure on the dragon, casting spell after spell while Albedo contained its attacks directed at him or redirecting them toward the dragon. Its HP was decreasing slowly but surely and the dragon seemed to realize that as well. He abruptly changed tactics and rather than use brute strength used something else. It retreated from Albedo's attack range and
{Soul Break} he heard the dragon say but nothing happened at all. Confused, Momonga turned to Albedo.
"Did anything happen to you?"
"No. I seem to be fine. Maybe it's some sort of ability that doesn't work on us."
"It might be so."
Indeed, the dragon seemed to panic and opened his jaw wide. The dragon had mainly used breath attacks so far and Albedo was able to counter them or tank the damage just fine. But Momonga felt that this time would be different. He quickly cast defensive magic.
[Veil of the Moon] Momonga cast using the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown. It was an immaterial magical barrier.
Then he added [Wall of Skeleton] a physical barrier. He erected the two-layers of defenses around himself and Albedo. Albedo herself seemed to have used skills to upgrade her defenses too. The two defensives barriers came just in time to counter the dragon's attack.
A huge explosion occurred. The impact destroyed both the Wall of Skeleton and the Veil of the Moon. Still, it seemed Albedo had to tank some damage too.
[Life Essence] when Momonga looked at Albedo's HP he was shocked. She had lost almost half of it and most of it was from the attack just now.
This is serious. We need to finish it off quickly before it has any chance at using anything more dangerous.
"Albedo! We need to get this over quickly before it becomes more dangerous."
"Yes Momonga."
[Life Essence] Momonga looked back at the dragon HP only to find that he had lost about half from the last time he looked. Maybe it uses HP to power up those spells of his. He thought. That was the only explanation he could come up with. It makes sense given that it has no MP at all. But that would be suicidal. Then again he must be desperate to do so. Better be done with it.
Momonga used the Staff to summon a Primal Fire Elemental and ordered it to attack the dragon. Albedo too was swinging her bardiche at the dragon.
[Summon Tenth-Tier Undead: Doom Lord] Momonga summoned a warrior-type level 70 undead and sent it to assist Albedo and the Fire Elemental. In addition, Momonga ordered the Doom Lord to activate [Ruinous Night]. Its special ability depleted the Doom Lord's HP at an alarming rate in exchange for a temporary boost in every one of its combat related stats. This way, the damage reducing ability of any opponent stronger than the Doom Lord would be nullified closing the gap in levels between the two. Albedo was swinging her bardiche, attacking the dragon from the front, the Primal Fire Elemental was punching it from the left while dealing continuous Fire Damage. With the addition of the Doom Lord swinging its War Scythe at the dragon from the right and Momonga supporting them with magic, it was just a question of time before the dragon died.
It was now desperately trying to flee but every time it attempted to fly the Primal Fire Elemental punched it and prevented its escape. The one-sided combat lasted some 15 minutes before Momonga estimated the dragon's HP to be low enough for a finishing blow. The Doom Lord had already vanished and Albedo was getting low on HP too. Even the Fire Elemental had less than half of its initial HP left.
"Get back!" Momonga ordered before unleashing his most powerful single-target fire attack spell- excluding Super-Tier- at the dragon.
[Triplet Maximize Magic: Vermillion Nova] it hit the agonizing dragon and its remaining HP went down to zero in an instant.
"Congratulations Momonga."
"Thanks for your hard work Albedo." Momonga was satisfied to have won this battle. The 1st one since he was in this strange situation and the first serious one since his days of adventures with his comrades. But this emotion was quickly suppressed even if he still felt some joy at a smaller degree.
Then Momonga was assailed by an intense pain. Something he had never experienced before. It wasn't the pain coming from the damage caused by an enemy attack but an intense headache. Multitudes of new information were being forcefully implanted in his brain. The pain was so intense that his emotion suppressing ability was activating in rapid succession. He sensed that his consciousness might not held for long. His field of vision was starting to reduce and he perceived thing like they were blurry.
[Create Fortress] he cast the 10th tier spell.
"Albedo, take me inside." He said before blacking out.
