Harry Potter and the Rocky Mountain school of Magic Ch.2

"Master Harry? Master Harry!" The elf said.

Harry looked up and wiped his eyes. "What do you need Winky?"

"Master Harry be needing to get back to work soon."

Harry glanced at his watch. "Shit! Thanks Winky." He said as he got up and hustled towards the transportation pad. Upon reaching it, he grasped his portkey saying "I owe, I owe it's off to work I go."

Harry stopped to look at himself in the mirror above his fireplace. Taking out his wand he cast a cleansing charm to remove the year stains from his face and a gentle cleaning charm to remove the grass and dirt from his clothes. Now passing inspection he walked quickly towards the auditorium to answer the questions of the incoming students and parents.

Walking up to the podium Harry announced "I hope you all enjoyed the tour and lunch. A special thanks to the student volunteers who came in during summer vacation to prepare your meal." Harry led a brief round of clapping.

"Now I know you have questions, let's keep this civilized. If you have a question please raise your hand, we will get to all of you eventually."

A sea of hands rose. Looking over the crowd Harry spotted a little African American girl in a bright yellow sweater. Pointing at her he said. "You, in the yellow sweater. Please state your name and ask your question."

"Emma Jean Hudson Sir. Are first years allowed to bring their brooms to school? Illvermorny doesn't allow it."

"Excellent question! Do you prefer Emma or Emma-jean?"

"Emma-jean sir."

"Alright Emma-jean. First years may bring their brooms to school, however they must pass a basic competency test before being allowed to ride them unsupervised. First years are also eligible for junior league quidditch and quadpot, though mounted blastoid and broom racing is restricted to third years and above. Thank you for your question." Harry said enthusiastically.

Harry next pointed to a tall Asian man wearing blue dress robes and a scowl on his face. "You sir, What is your man and question?"

"Deepak Patel. In the honor code it states there is a three strike policy for bullying and lists a number of possible punishments, one is the complete loss of magical knowledge. Isn't that a bit extreme?" He sneered.

"Thank you for your question, Mister Patel. Let me start by explaining the punishments. For verbal insults, minor physical violence and basic jinxes and hexes. The first offense will get the student detention and a letter home. A second offense will result in a suspension of ten days to one month, depending on severity. A third offense will see the student expelled. All reports of bullying are investigated by viewing the memories of all involved parties and witnesses in a pensive. In the cases of severe bullying which includes sexual harrassment and assault, physical violence that causes injury or the use of any spell that could be considered lethal, we have zero tolerance. In these cases the student will be immediately expelled. The skills we teach here have the potential to cause great harm. I do not believe it is right to send potential monsters out into the world with those skills. Magic itself judges the students actions and their willingness to change. If they are irredeemable, the contract will take their knowledge of Magic. Have I addressed your concerns sir?"

"Yes, thank you." He said before retaking his seat.

Next Harry called on a man in a marine corps uniform.

"Marshall Evenson, my son Marcus, wants to follow our family tradition and join the military after school. How can magic school help him with that?"

"Thank you for your service Second Lieutenant Evenson. Our pre-law enforcement tract includes physical fitness, firearms training, magical combat training, situational awareness training and first aid. It also includes interviewing and investigation skills, hand to hand combat training and the basics of criminology and psychology. Urban and wilderness survival. Lastly to graduate the program the student must be fluent in at least two languages besides English. I believe those skills would put him in good stead when joining any branch of the military. However, if he wanted to join cadets, ROTC or the reserves in his later years here arrangements can be made. Have I addressed your concerns sir?"

"I have a few more, could I meet with you after the session?"

"No problem." Harry answered and the Second lieutenant retook his seat beside his son.

"Next, you in the purple dress." Harry said, pointing out a blonde girl in the third row.

"Natalia Federov, Sir I want to be a professional skateboarder. There isn't anywhere to ride around here."

"That's not a question, Natalia. However if you maintain good grades and get your parents permission, we have many weekend trips. One of our most requested is trips to the skate park. If there is enough interest we could build a ramp or two but I have a particular love for Burnside in Portland and in the winter there is nothing better than escaping the cold of Colorado to skate at Vans in Orange, California or S.P.O.T in Tampa, Florida. You are in luck, my children loved to skateboard and I too, am a fan. Hector Ortiz was a student here a few years ago. He's on the Street Plant team now, maybe we can get him to come by and teach you a few things." Harry said with a smile.

Natalia returned his smile looking very excited.

"You in the grey robe." Harry said, indicating an older man with salt and pepper hair and a truly spectacular handlebar mustache.

"Sven Johansen. Why do you teach about guns?" The man asked in heavily accented English.

"First Mister Johansen let me say, that is an awesome mustache. Let's face it. Like it or not guns are a large part of American culture. Aurors and hit-wizards are issued firearms and even wizards use them for hunting and home protection. We believe that students should know how to safely handle a firearm, even if just to safely unload one. If anyone has concerns about children handling guns, let me assuage your concerns. All of the school's firearms are enchanted so they can only be fired while pointing down range. Both our indoor and outdoor ranges are warded so only select faculty can cross the firing line and all weapons are rendered inoperable when anyone crosses the firing line. Students are never permitted to bring their own firearms and parents with a CCW are expected to leave theirs in the security office. Any other questions about firearms?"

No one else raised their hand and Mister Johansen sat back down. Next he pointed out a brunette woman in a pinstriped pantsuit.

"Karyn Van Natter. In the metalworking shop you use hydraulic presses and in the wood shop you use table saws. Isn't it dangerous? Won't the children get hurt?" She said loudly.

"No Karyn. All our tools are heavily enchanted. Saws won't cut flesh and the presses stop when anything organic is inside. Let's face the facts, learning magic is dangerous. Accidents and injuries will happen but our first priority even above education is the safety of your children."

'Why is it always someone named Karen that asks this question' Harry thought to himself.

The instigation continued for another two gruelling hours before Harry had been able to escape to the kitchens for a bite to eat. Thoroughly drained from the day so far he called for Winky and asked for a sandwich.

At Rocky Mountain the students and teachers prepared the meals. The school maintained only three house elves, though a few teachers had personal elves like Winky. The elves maintained the common areas, infirmary and greenhouses. America didn't abide the abuse of elves that Europe did. Here elves were people with the same rights as everyone else.

When Harry finished his lunch, he thanked Winky and made his way back to his office. The new school year was approaching and the paperwork it generated was always daunting.

This year Harry would only be teaching three classes. First year DADA because he felt it was the best way to get to know his new students. Advanced blacksmithing because he could not get enough time at the forge and Pre-law enforcement dueling. As a former duelling champion he liked to maintain his skillset. He would also help run the skateboard, Japanese and fencing clubs.

AN: So I'm back. This is the story I've been working on for the last five years. Before wandering I had this idea. Food for your soul will be updating soonish. Though updates will be infrequent. If you've been following me for a while. I got my eye surgery but it made matters much, much worse. Four surgeries later, I can see again but my eyes get tired quickly and headaches ensue.

I recently reread Wandering. I'm sorry. I had no idea just how bad my grammar was. I still think I'll rewrite that one day.

This story will have a number of flashbacks. It is the prequel to the following two books and is meant to show what happened to Harry and friends after the Battle of Hogwarts. Harry is an overpowered badass but still very human. My layout is for about 50 chapters (80k word count) but who knows? I hope to maintain a daily upload schedule. I've found that if I stop writing a story for a few days it loses its momentum and I suffer terrible writer's Block.

If you are a grammar nazi please do the world a favor and go fuck yourself with something sharp. This is a hobby not a job.

I want to start one of those Pat Ryan's but I think it's hinky to earn money from writing someone else's intellectual property. As such I am working on a few original stories and cookbooks. If I start one I'll let you know. I've been unable to work for the last year and a half and have stretched my savings to the breaking point. I have probably another ten months of recovery before I can return to work.

If you are a Beta and have the inclination to help my writing please PM me.

Thanks

Fishturbine.
