Day one

Another job...

Another portion of the city infested with demons prowling about: their infernal hides can be seen moving about, as their deathly growls echoed through the city.

"Infernal spawns!" A voice called out. The demons turned towards a lone one storey building, all to see one white-haired man on said building's roof: "your time has come to returneth to the abyssal bowels of the underworld"

The white-haired man then lifted another by his arms, displaying it all for the demons to see.

"For this, is my son!"

"Dad..." the younger man grumbled, "let go of me..."

"Foolishness, Nero! It is parent-children bonding time"

"So" Nico began, "what's goin' on with Vergil and Vergil Jr.?"

"Found him and Ei reading some sort of parenting book" Dante shrugged, watching the chaos ensuing in the distance: "guess the lady must've convinced Verg for them to try being a family I guess"

"Where's the little shit's mama?" She then asked, realizing that Ei wasn't beside the two.

"She's picking off the demons while they're distracted with the other two"

The two stood in silence as the watched a dysfunctional family try their best at mending old bridges, although it was off to a rocky start.

"You wanna watch the chaos that ensues?" Nico asked

"You got the popcorn?"

"Fuck yeah"

Day two

Nero walked home after a particular errand was done: he noticed that the frequency of demons have gotten a tad bit higher the following weeks, just what is going on in the barrier between the human world the underworld?

He notices a faint smell as he got close to the door, his stomach grumbled because of it.

"Hey, Kyrie" he called out as he opened the door, "you cooking something? I'm hungry"

"Hello hungry" a voice called out, but it wasn't Kyrie's. Nero quickly rushed towards the kitchen, only to see a familiar white-haired half demon manning the kitchen stove.

Oh no

"I, am dad" Vergil continued. As the older Cambion turned around to meet his son's gaze, Nero was welcomed by the most bizarre sight: the older cambion have foregone the black coat he had always wore, instead, in its place was an apron that had the words "you will not forget this devil's cooking" written on it.

"Old man" Nero muttered aloud, "where the fuck did you get that?"

"The apron? It belonged to your grandfather" Vergil replied, "it was one of the few things that had managed to survive the fires. Believe my words or not, it is all for you to decide"

"Okay, and where's Kyrie?"

"She is by the table with Dante and your mother, it is best you join them while I finish up"

Nero walked to the table to see the three that his father had mentioned earlier sitting by the table: Kyrie seemed to be saying something to the two, causing Dante laugh hysterically whereas Ei seemed to continue listening intently.

"What's going on?" Nero asked, pulling out a seat for himself. The three stopped their conversation when the young devil hunter entered the room.

"Oh, Nero, welcome back!" Kyrie greeted him, "they were just asking about your childhood, so I willingly obliged"

"Is that so?" Nero asked,

"Yep" Dante answered, before propping his head onto his hand as he leaned towards the table and grinned. After spending a few months with the twins, it allowed Nero to differentiate Dante's genuine grin from his shit-eating grin. Unfortunately for Nero, it was the latter so something was up.

"So, Nero" The older cambion continued, "can you tell us your perspective of 'the tinkling spi-"

"Okay, moving on!" Nero interrupted, wanting to change the subject: "so... dad can cook?"

"Well, I did see him attempt to once" Ei spoke up, "during one of the Shogun's patrols, I caught him starting a fire and..."

"Why isn't this working?!" Vergil roared, slowly developing a migraine. His surroundings grew messy from the attempts of making a decent meal, many ingredients and utensils were scattered about: "is there something missing? Must more spices be added?"

"Gilver?" A voice called out to him, causing Vergil's hand to hover over the Yamato's hilt. As he turned to meet the owner of the voice, he notices a familiar purple-haired woman.

"Oh, it's just you" Vergil muttered, easing his arm knowing he wasn't being ambushed: "what do you want? Can't you just see I'm busy?"

"I see, so that's what the fire was" Ei thought aloud, "so you're attempting to cook? For a second, I thought you were trying to perform some kind of alchemy"

"If you have nothing more to say, then leave" Vergil warned, "I will not tell you a third time..."

"So..." Nero spoke up, "did you help him?"

"I am a warrior and martial artist" Ei proclaimed, "I am well-versed in the art of combat and many techniques have branched out from my own"

She then sighed: "but in the proficiency of cooking, that is when I admit defeat"

"So there's a possibility we may-"

Several glowing swords flew from the kitchen, carrying large plates filled with food.

"You will not forget this devil's cooking" Vergil proudly proclaimed. The food itself didn't look all that bad, in fact it seemed appetizing enough. What the group was worried about next was the taste rather than appearance: as they bit deep into the food, they had their answer.

It was okay: not bad, but not great either.

"Hey Verg, mind if you pass the salt?" Dante asked

Day three

"Dante, what's going on?" Nero asked: he found his parents standing across from each other, their gazes serious as Dante sat on the entrance of the van.

"Either your parents are officially having a divorce, or they're just having a friendly spar" the red cambion replied, "either way, we might actually get to see that sword of hers Verg talked about"

True to his words, the two watched as energy swirled around Nero's mother, as she slowly pulled the hilt of a sword out from her-

"Did she just..." Nero deadpanned

"Oh ho! Now I see why Vergil's into her" Dante guffawed as they watched the duel commence...

Day seven

"They're still at it?" Nero yawned: He watches as his parents' duel lasted for four more days, neither side seemed to call quits.

"Yep, I've been keeping watch" Dante replied, still in same the spot since day three. They watched as the two suddenly powered into a different form respectively: "and it seems we're at the climax of the fight"

"Right..." Nero muttered, "well, we need to go, cause apparently another demon infestation popped up"

"Damn demons interrupting my entertainment" Dante muttered under his breath, before turning back to the young devil hunter: "alright, where we headed?"

She had watched as Vergil shifted between the lines of human and demon: however - unlike his original demonic form - his new one appeared to more draconic in nature, followed by four large wings furled in his back. From his hands and feet were the same gauntlets and greaves she had seen many days ago, they shined brilliantly in white light.

"You're finished!" He declared, the light emanating from his gauntlets and greaves growing intensely. He then charged towards the woman before him, but the puppet-like hands that were once before her managed to clasp tightly onto him, preventing him from going any further.

"I had told you many years ago that someday I will best you in our duels" she reminisced, "this ends now"

A loud thumping sound can be heard from within the hands that had clasped themselves onto the half demon, a bright light enveloped Vergil as he broke free from its grasp.

"Nice try, but it is over when I say it is over" he said, before assuming a basic hand-to-hand stance: "so try to keep up"

He then displaced himself from his original space, moving onto the space in front of Ei. He struck her abdomen with his right hand, followed by his left then unleashed a flurry of kicks that struck all over her body, which caused her to revert to her original state as she fell.

"Again... I've lost..." she sighed under breath. She watches as Vergil returned to his human visage, and suddenly gave her his hand as he hoisted her up.

"You have grown strong since our last duel" Vergil spoke, "I can tell your movements are much more refined compared to before"

"Of course" she smiled softly, "I have intentions of growing stronger as well"

Her streak of boldness returned as she gently pressed her lips against his own like she did all those years ago: her body moved on its own as her arms wrapped themselves around the cambion's neck, reveling from the half demon's warmth as she felt his own arms slowly enveloping her waist.

"Did you really have to leave?" She asked, breaking away from the kiss.

"I had my reasons" the half demon replied, "I wanted... needed to become stronger, and if I stayed for too long, I would have not gotten anymore stronger than I am now"

"Still, I never fully understood why you pushed everything away for power" she sighed, "are you not satisfied with where you stood?"

"Perhaps I'll tell you another time" he told her, before he found his body moving on his own. Perhaps this time he too, was feeling quite daring, for he pressed forward on the offensive as he resumed their moment of intimacy. Ei was normally the one that initiated the moments of intimacy between the two, so imagine her surprise when the half demon was the one who started it this time.

"I am normally indifferent when it comes to change" she told him as their lips broke away once more, "but this is a nice change of pace"

I don't know what day this is anymore

Dante had found a large crate in the middle of the room: he was visiting Nero's home for the time, but him and Kyrie never usually bought that many things.

He watches as the box shifted a bit from its original position, the opening the loose lid from its top to see a familiar devil hunter.

"Nero?" He asked, "why are you..."

"Please, don't let them know I'm here..." he grumbled, "I know they're trying but I'm just tired"

"You know..." Dante trailed off, then continued: "a box in the middle of the room seems kinda suspicious, don't you think?"

"Please don't remind me"

"Still, why are you trying to avoid them now?" The older devil hunter asked, watching as the young demon popped his head out of the crate.

"Look, while I appreciate them trying to bond with me" Nero began, "but the dueling and whatever the fuck my dad was doing at the start felt too much for me to handle, I just want to rest instead of obliging to whatever they want to do with me each day."

"Nero?" A feminine voice called out, the two turned to see a familiar kimono: "why are you in a crate?"

"Uh... it's my new bed?" He answered sheepishly

"I see..." she muttered, "I was in the market with your beloved and your friend earlier, until I came across a set of cards..."

As if to prove her point, she showed the said cards on her hand: "I was surprised to see that Karuta also exists in your world, and I was wondering if you could join me and your father for at least one game?"

"Well..." Nero thought aloud, "it's a game of cards, so I guess that's fine"

The young devil hunter hopped out of the large crate he was in, joining his mother's side as they went to look for Vergil. As the duo left, a tired Nico entered the room.

"So I've been told you were out shopping with Nero's girl and his mother" Dante said

"Yep, turns out she's as broke as you are" Nico groaned, "but on the plus side, I gots some information about Nero's birth in exchange for them cards"

"Really? What kind of juicy stuff did she tell?" The legendary devil hunter asked

"Well..." Nico began, "apparently, it all started with..."

AN: this genuinely feels like filler chapter for some reason, probably because I'm starting to get more ideas for the spin-off rather than this.

Also, we'll never see a chapter where the family plays a game of Karuta together, too lazy to look up and read the rules.

Random thought: I have a place in my heart for mashups, so it was kinda sad to see not a lot of people attempt to make a mashup between the themes of Vergil and Ei despite its potential. I don't mean with "bury the light" given Vergil's other themes like the ones in DMC3 that are overshadowed by his current. I genuinely feel like its a missed opportunity.
