Megatron noticed how frustrated Elisabeth was throughout the whole morning. All her movements were fuelled by anger, sometimes she just threw things to calm herself down for only a brief moment. It was obvious to him that it had been her creators which made her so upset. He started to wonder about what exactly her creators did or said to make her this angry. He would have asked if she wouldn't have looked like she's about to kill someone.
What he knew about this whole thing was that the children humiliated her when she woke up. He was so disrespectful to her, which he knew was really frustrating. Maybe her makers did the same thing. Maybe she felt as powerless as him, when he looked in the mirror on the first day.
Whether her reasons were he hoped it will get better soon, because he is getting really bored and Elisabeth was the only one who could entertain him.
"You know what? Let's go somewhere" she said suddenly when she realised how uncomfortable she made Megatron. "Let's go to the zoo. It will be fun to show you the different kinds of animals."
"I am looking forward to it" he thanked with excitement in his eyes, because his boredom was about to end.
His genuine excitement surprised Elisabeth and in the meanwhile, it calmed her as well, filling herself with joy. The ride into there was one of their chattiest, as none of them could shut up for even one moment.
"So, I'm curious. Can you tell me about the faction you're the leader of?" This was what got him in an even better mood as he started to speak about the Decepticons, war strategies and some of his cool stories. Like how he survived getting beaten by another robot as big as a city.
"So, if you ever…" then he noticed how overly amused she looked while they walked towards the entrance, he had to ask. "What is so amusing?"
"You are so chatty today! And you're really cute when you really get fired up with you telling me stories!" she exclaimed as she paid the tickets.
"Of course, I am. You are a great audience and I always wanted to tell someone these stories. You are lucky to hear it."
"Yeah, after all I asked you to tell me…" she snickered while poking his side with her elbow. "But now it's my turn, because we're arrived at the lions and oh boy… you will love them."
When he saw the lions, he was impressed. They looked majestic with their gold coats, strong legs and beautiful teeth.
"They seem dangerous."
"Yeah, they are. They are brutal when it comes to their children. If it's weak or not like the others they often abandon or eat it, so they won't waste time and resources" she explained while trying to remember her high school biology lessons. She found them boring, thinking she never will need that knowledge, but now she's here and explaining to an alien what he needs to know about their biology. "But it's just natural selection."
"Natural selection?"
"Kill or be killed, that's the rule in the wild. The weak die on this planet. Kind of gruesome, but that's how it is."
"I am familiar with the rule of kill or be killed" he said as they continued their journey through the zoo
"Of course, you are, although I think you were more on the 'be killed' end" she giggled as they arrived in front of the giraffes and elephants.
"Did you just insult me?" he asked, raising an annoyed eyebrow.
"I just stated the facts" she answered with a sheepish smile plastered all over her face. "The facts you told me."
"I still cannot imagine how you can be this sly and annoying at the same time Elisabeth."
"Just call me Beth. Everyone calls me Beth. Except my brother. But please don't…" It was late, because Megatron let out an evil smile, knowing what she did not want.
"Betsy. So, dear Betsy, I wish to call you like that. Betsy" he repeated her nickname again and again, until she had enough of his game.
"Well, then I shall call you Meg from this moment on." However instead of an angry and irritated face, Elisabeth saw surprise which astonished her.
"I… I never…" he started, feeling still quite shocked from this. "I never had a nickname before. A nickname I liked" he had far too many names before and most of them were not really pleasing. But he liked this one. It suited his situation well. "I am shorter than I used to be, so it is only fair to shorten my name even more."
"You truly like it?" he only nodded. "Oh, on the topic of names… What does Megatron mean?"
"It is a long story, because I have to tell you about other things before you can understand what my name means."
"That's good, it's a long way to the animal I want to show you to help you understand my name. Because it's only fair if you tell me, I'll tell you."
"Then I suppose I will start this whole story. So…
In the dawn of the universe two gods existed. Primus, the god of creation and Unicron, the god of destruction. They were waging a battle which seemed to be eternal. Until one day Primus created thirteen warriors who in the end managed to put Unicron into stasis. After Primus became the core of our planet leaving the thirteen to do whatever they wanted. Having no one to keep them in line they turned on each other. One of them was more than ready to go against his brothers to prove that he is right. And when he killed one of them, he became known as The Fallen. He was the one I named myself after. Megatronus."
"I never expected to hear religion from an alien, nonetheless from a robot-car alien" she said, flabbergasted by his tale. This was as familiar as unknown to her. Because it contained elements which were suspiciously familiar to human religion. "But back to your name. How did it get shortened?"
"It was easier to chant Megatron in the gladiatorial arena."
"And now I shortened it even more," she said, a little bit embarrassed.
"I do not mind it. I usually change my name when a new era begins."
"But that means… Megatron is not your real name?" she wondered.
"I do not use my real name," he said, his voice hinted with anger. "And I wish to forget about it."
"Why? What is it?" she pushed curiously as usual.
"Something I will not share with you" he said and this time Elisabeth stopped pushing. She remembered what happened at the supermarket.
"Then I think it's about time that I talk about my name. So, Elisabeth means promise to God. I got this name, because my mom met the queen in a weird way when she was pregnant with me."
"The queen?"
"Yeah, the queen. But she does not truly rule anymore, though our country is still called the United Kingdom. We have democratic government instead. And as for Osborne… That's my family name, as you heard my brother has it too and so does my dad. So, Osborne means bear god, and that's why you had to start. So, I can show you them. Anyway, they are the bears" she pointed at one, as they arrived at their place. "They symbolise courage and strength if you want to know."
And then she looked at him and the silent and tender moment they suddenly shared made her feel dizzy. Like there were butterflies in her stomach waiting to be let out.
So, to get her attention off this she started to think about the story he said. It seemed he named himself after the villain of the story. But was that warrior really bad? She didn't think so. Having disagreement with someone and being ready to fight for your beliefs doesn't mean that you are the baddie. The only bad thing it did was that it killed someone. But who was she to tell whether it's good or bad?
"I never thought humans also have meanings behind their names," he said, looking back at the two bears which were in a friendly fight with each other. "You are more than meets the eye, Elisabeth Osborne."
"So do you. You are not as cold as you show yourself to be" she said after a few minutes from when they started walking to the next part of the zoo.
"You do not know me. Neither how many I killed."
"But that's what happens in war. Especially when you are the leader. You always have to make tough decisions." She never was in war, so she could only imagine with her limited knowledge how much pain and misery his eyes must have seen.
"You are right," he said while thinking about how she could understand this situation so well. How can she see him as something more than the monster he really is? And why now bothers him that he's a monster?
"It doesn't sound too convincing."
"But it is," he snapped as they arrived at the tropical house.
"Here we are. I want to show you the most majestic, deadly and beautiful creatures on Earth! Snakes!" she said as she pointed towards one of them in the terrarium.
"It has no legs, and no arms for that matter" noticed Megatron immediately. "How can they be dangerous?"
"We'll about to see that for ourselves" answered Elisabeth as she saw two zookeepers carefully stepping in with a live pig in their hands. "So, this is a 4-metre-long green anaconda and as you see, she is hungry. In the wild they usually eat something as big as the lions we saw earlier."
"That one? Eating a lion?" he asked incredulously while the zookeepers put down the pig and left it with the anaconda.
"Just watch" she answered as the snake slithered closer to its prey. "They don't have good eyes, so they usually use their tongues to survey their surroundings. And when they find prey, they…" There the snake attacked the pig, latching and wrapping around it. "Attack fast, without thinking. Then they slowly wrap around them, stopping the blood flow and killing their prey. After that they swallow it whole."
"Now seeing them…" Megatron was still in awe of what he just witnessed. "They are really beautiful creatures."
"See? I was right. And of course, they are my favourite animals for being this brutal, fierce and precise predator of our planet. Really, I just love them."
"If she can adore an animal like this, she might like me in my own body. Wait… When in the pits, did I start to care about what she thinks of me?" He felt so confused by his thoughts that he couldn't say anything. Elisabeth took it as a sign to move on.
"Then let's go, I want to show you even more," she said as they continued their way towards the birds.
"You always want to show me something" Megatron said as he grabbed her wrist, before she could happily run off towards their next destination.
"There's a lot of stuff to see in this world. I want to show you them, because after all I'm your guide!" she exclaimed enthusiastically. "But, hey, when you get yourself back you could show me your planet and you could be my guide!"
"If I ever return."
"I have a plan and I hope it works out for the better and you could be back living your alien life. I mean it is a pretty good plan I must say! Not bulletproof, but a stable one."
"I am not questioning your abilities. I question whether I want to return. Because I may have formed an attachment to you, Elisabeth."
They were watching each other in dead silence, stunned by the sudden truth. He did not imagine that he would say something like that. But at that moment, it just came out of him. He shouldn't have. Neither tell her or to form it. But now is too late, because he already has this attachment, something he clearly tried to avoid for the past few millennia. The real question was whether he is able to sever those ties made by his unconsciousness before he runs out of time or not.
"Oh, shit" cursed Elisabeth as his sentence made another thing obvious to her. She had formed an attachment to him too.
