Next morning, they were both sitting in front of each other, silently eating their breakfast which was just cereal this time. After a while curiosity took over Elisabeth. Why and how did he pull off what he did yesterday. And why he killed that person yesterday instead of just knocking him out.
"How did you do that yesterday?"
"I remembered that I have been in the same situation before. And this made me realise that the faces may have changed, but I am still in the same game. A game I know how to play" he explained finishing the food. "In this body I lack the strength, but I do not lack the ability to make quick decisions and the knowledge of tactics."
"Why did you kill him?" Yes, the real question and topic of the whole conversation.
"I saw this as the only option" he shrugged his shoulders.
"The only option?! You could do literally anything and yet you chose to kill him!" Elisabeth was livid! She never agreed with Ambrose on the matter of killing, so it could be imagined how well she agrees now.
"And what now?!" he slammed his hands on the table. "It is done and you cannot do anything about it!"
"I just want to understand! You died and it must have been really fucking painful, yet knowing the pain, you decide to give someone the same treatment."
"What did you want me to do? I have been fighting all my life! This is what I am!"
"You are not just someone who has a lust for blood. You are more than that!" she shouted as she pushed herself closer to him by putting her hands on the table.
"What makes you so sure? We have known each other for a week."
"You showed me… I've seen it in your eyes… Or at least I thought I…"
"I am sorry that I am not what you imagined me to be" he cut her as he straightened, then turned around and went back to his room. But standing in front of the stairs he looked back seeing Elisabeth cry. But how can he tell her that this is him, this is all he can ever be? It was his part to play. His role it seems. And without it he would be a nobody just like before. Anyway, it was far too late for him…
The week went painfully slowly for Elisabeth. Not just because she had to wait for Friday for her figure skating practice, not just because after what happened at the mob, she and Megatron grew distant. They would sometimes talk, but they weren't that deep or long or funny like before. It pained her how cold they became as fast as everything happened between them. But maybe it was for the better. Or at least it was what she thought.
However, she had a lot of things to do, so she called up Mel with the news, who wasn't exactly happy about having the head of the mafia in the team. She also bought everything and made the necklace for him. When it was done, she put it into her jacket's pocket and forgot about it.
But finally, Friday came and she was more than thrilled to have a skate practice. However, that day Megatron wasn't particularly happy about staying home, so he decided to tag along. For her biggest surprise and delightment.
So, they went to London which was not really far away. On the way they only discussed that Elisabeth has an apartment she rents with like three other girls and they will go there just to pick up her stuff.
"It is cold here" he said as they arrived at the skating ring and he wriggled his nose then sneezed.
"It's for the ice, to not to melt. By the way, why did you accompany me?" she asked, going straight to the point. "It's not like I have an interesting life."
"I want to see what you are doing. Is that hard for you to process, human?" he huffed annoyed as he crossed his hand. And here they were. At square one once again.
"Whatever" she rolled her eyes frustrated, because Elisabeth knew damn well that after all she did to him, she deserves to be treated better than this. "I am only doing this because of Merlin and not him. And for Merlin I have to hold on" she reminded herself, in spite of her heart telling her something else.
"I have to sever those ties before I will be caught in the midst of my feelings. And that is something I absolutely cannot let happen!" thought Megatron while looking at Elisabeth.
A few minutes later Elisabeth was lacing her skate while her sweatshirt slit down, revealing her bare shoulders, because under it she wore a white sleeveless top.
"If I remember correctly, which I do, I told you that staring is rude" Elisabeth snapped, feeling Megatron gazing at her.
"Osborne!" called out her coach, who appeared in the doors.
"Here boss!" she shouted back, lifting her hand and waving. "Sorry for not coming…"
"Two weeks Osborne! You were not able to get your sorry ass here for two weeks!" he continued to rant as he arrived before them. "I would be surprised if you didn't forget the choreography by now."
"Then expect to be surprised" she said as she stood up in her skates. "By the way let me introduce you to my reason for not being here for two weeks!" Then she pointed at Megatron.
"Another boyfriend? Again?" he asked, rolling his eyes in annoyance.
"No. He is my friend Merlin; the Merlin I was talking about. So, deal is that he had an accident and I was called to him, but when I arrived it turned out that he has severe amnesia."
"Okay Osborne, whatever you say… Just go to the ring, because in an hour the lesson with the beginners will start."
"I will, just give me a minute alone with Merlin"
"Just a minute," he said, turning and walking out.
"You should stay here, close to the ring is even colder. You wouldn't like it. Also, what I do would only bore you" she explained as Megatron furrowed his eyebrows.
"Do you know that your plan of making me stay here will not work? I am not that gullible."
"One could only try," she sighed and she extended her hand towards him. "If you really want to see me, will you walk me there?"
"I will," he answered, looking at her while taking her hand. Walking hand in hand, he saw Elisabeth biting her lips and fiddling with a loose strand of her hair in a bun. He felt her hand trembling in his, which sparked some… worry in him. "Do you feel fine? You seem to be… anxious."
"I'm alright. Everything's fine" she reassured him, but it seemed she was rather reassuring herself. "I'm going to do the choreography like always and it will be perfect…" she murmured while closing her eyes for a second.
"The others may judge you, but I will not, regardless of what you do." It was his turn to calm her a little bit.
"You… Won't?" she asked back, a surprise present in all of her features. Then she let out a breath she was holding in for so long.
"Yes, my intention is just to simply observe you."
"Okay… Then sit anywhere you want or you can stand or…"
"Go, I will be fine" he told her, letting go of her hand.
He watched her as she warmed up by going in circles, doing some jumps and spins. And he just stood there, completely enamoured by what she was doing.
"Best day ever!" shouted someone next to him, which completely caught him off-guard. "I came to warm up before the others, but I found Elisabeth Osborne! What a lucky day!"
"I did not know she was popular amongst you" he looked at the girl, who was somewhere around that human child, Jack's age.
"Oh boy, she's the queen of ice!" she explained enthusiastically. "Like, she has been skating since she was six, and also won the World Junior's at thirteen, which was also her first one. And now the Olympics… she will destroy everyone there. But where are my manners! Name's Kat. And you?"
"Call me…" there he started to think about what to say "Merlin. I am Elisabeth's…" another second of thinking "friend."
"You know HER? Oh my god, oh my god!" she clapped excitedly as her face lit up. "I don't even know what to ask… Sorry about speaking too much, I just… I want to be like her one day."
"Success does not come easy, if you want to be anything close you have to work hard."
"Thought so. What is she like? As a person I mean."
"Stubborn. Annoyingly so" Megatron answered, earning a giggle from Kat. "But a kind spirited human, with a good sense of humour. She also does not know when to shut up, but… I like that about her."
"Oh, so you're that kind of friend…" she said sheepishly and he couldn't decipher what she meant. "Oh, it's starting!" she shouted, pointing at Elisabeth who started her choreography.
Hope when you take that jump
You don't fear the fall
"Oh, and she straight starts with a triple axel!" Kat exclaimed, but seeing her new friend's confused face, she decided to give him some guidance. "Axel is a move in figure skating. The easiest to spot, but the hardest to execute. As you saw it, the skater takes off while facing forward. Then you spin in the air. The number of the spins give the name of the axel. Three spins equal the triple axel. Though I'm not a professional in these things."
Hope if everybody runs
You choose to stay
"I would not mind if you would talk more about this."
"Yeah, I gladly tell you the basics, but some of my knowledge is questionable…"
So, this is how Megatron got a crash course on figure skating, which only made him more interested in the sport. At the end of the song Kat had to go as she saw her friends.
"It was good to meet you, Merlin!" she waved, but at the last minute she looked back saying: "Also I totally ship you with Elisabeth! Good luck with her!"
He didn't understand what that meant.
"Maybe I am taking it too literally, like Elisabeth said."
Then Elisabeth appeared next to him a few minutes later.
"Jeez, this was intense" she murmured as she was gasping for air.
"You were perfect," said Megatron, making Elisabeth blush a little. "Also. You lied to me."
"About what?" she asked, confused as she went back to change her skate.
"About skating. You said it was boring, but I rarely saw something as exciting as this."
"You found it exciting?"
"Yes. Also, another human explained a lot of things" he said as she finished changing and they were walking out.
"Ah, so you're now a professional in the matter? Then I will let you in on a secret. Do you know which is the first thing you learn when you ice-skate?" she asked, only earning a head shaking. "The first thing you learn is how to fall."
"To fall?" he asked, eyes widening. "Is not the whole purpose of this to never fall?"
"Yeah, the beginners say that a lot too. I know we are all afraid of it, but the way to rise up is by falling down. Sometimes hard" she explained looking into his eyes.
"One can only rise by falling…" he murmured as he realised in some other way it was his case too. And if this is true, there's hope. "How can you do it?"
"One needs a good teacher for that" answered Elisabeth with a lopsided smile picking up what's happening fast. "A guide."
"Then I am lucky to have you Betsy" he returned the smile while stepping closer.
"Yes, maybe you are," she said as something very strange happened. With one swift move Megatron hugged her tight. His arms were around her as her head laid on his chest. Hearing his calm and steady heartbeat, she closed her eyes to savour the tender moment. She felt so close to him, so very close that even she couldn't know how that was possible.
"Sorry to disrupt whatever you two are doing" approached them Melissa looking like usual. Her short brown hair was curled, her hazel green eyes were shining in excitement and her formal, news writer attire was freshly ironed and she held her laptop under her arm. Though the multiple rings in her ear were new.
"Mel! It's a surprise…" Elisabeth said as she tore the hug, her cheeks red.
"To see me? When were you the one to call me here?" she asked, smiling amused. "Jeez Beth, you're really getting old fast!" then she looked at Megatron. "Also, it's nice to meet ya Beth's sexy alien friend."
"Call me Megatron" he said feeling a little bit embarrassed by 'Beth's sexy alien friend'.
"I keep it in mind. So, can we talk?"
"Yeah, sure," she answered, still trying to hide the blush on her face. Then she looked at Megatron. "Can you wait in the car while we speak? It won't take long."
"Yes, but do not keep me waiting" he nodded and went back to the car.
"I'll try my best."
"Can you tell me what I just witnessed?" Mel started with obviously the most important question of all.
"We hugged. That's all" Elisabeth shrugged her shoulders.
"Yeah, sure. I mean what was with your head on his chest, the lingering looks and that you two had a conversation without speaking at all? Because that was freaky."
"Wait… WHAT? I told him to wait in the car, didn't I?!"
"Just calm down Beth, it's not that bad! I think you two just read each other's body language and know what the other meant. Nothing that weird" tried Mel to calm her down realising she shouldn't have asked.
"It is! You know why?!" she shouted while gesticulating with her hands.
"Why? Why would it be so bad?"
"Because there was this feeling I couldn't identify at first, but now I know. What I felt…. as ridiculous it sounds… was as if our souls… have touched. It was just a brief moment and I think…" then it hit her. Hit her with the weight of a thousand bricks.
"You think what?" asked Mel, who was curious, despite knowing the answer.
"I'm falling for him. Really. Like in those movies."
"Then congratulations for falling in love with a genocidal, alien warlord!" she said, opening her arms with a sarcastic smile. "Who apparently also tried to destroy our planet. Many times, in fact."
