As the spell ended, Fuegoleon spoke again. "Now that you are back to your full strength, we shall raise the limits on what is considered your full strength. Your training begins now!"
After a few hours of training, Wilhelm was lying on the ground in the coliseum breathing hard, sweat covering most if not all of him. Fuegoleon didn't let Wilhelm even get the idea of slacking and the teen was actually okay with that, the man giving off an energy of drive that kept Wilhelm's already high determination from deterring in any way. Not that far into the training Mimosa left and Fuegoleon kept the training going without a hitch. He had Wilhelm go through different sets of exercises, one after the other with just enough time to catch his breath before the teen was put through the next set.
It was getting to mid evening now, when Fuegoleon spoke. "That will be enough for now. It is best to not overdo anything as to avoid damaging yourself instead of strengthening yourself." The teen held up a hand into a thumbs up, still taking large breaths. "By now I assume you are questioning why I had you first do exercises before a real introduction to the capital and what you'll be doing here?"
Wilhelm gave a heavy exhale. "To be honest... it hadn't really occurred to me. But now I want to guess it was out of convenience of being here."
"It was indeed convenient, but that was for Mimosa moreso. Those encounters you had with Diamond mages are notable and I wanted to see how strong you were for myself." Fuegoleon explained.
Wilhelm sat up, a small groan escaping him. "I was lucky to be honest."
"Luck had nothing to do with it." Fuegoleon disagreed. "Those were detailed reports and showed something I wanted to see in you myself, and while training exercises may not best showcase it, I was still able to see what I knew you had."
"Which was?"
"The heart of a lion. You had no hesitation in stepping up to opponents above you and doing everything you can to overcome them. I commend that willpower and want to see what comes of it."
The teen was silent for a minute. "I plan on making a name for myself. I need more than my willpower."
"If you are willing to push yourself to go far, then keep at it and you will get that goal." The man looked at the sky and the position of the sun. "I must know check on my squad. You have been arranged to have a room at an Inn not far from here, I will take you there before I leave for the moment." Before he could actually guide Wilhelm so much as two feet the man had a beeping come from his robes. He grabbed a communication device and listened as it gave a message.
"Requesting all available captains to arrive at the castle for an emergency meeting as soon as possible." The device gave off a static voice.
"I apologize Wilhelm but it seems I must take my leave with haste. Look for an Inn called The Prancing Pony." Fuegoleon then quickly made his departure, leaving Wilhelm by himself.
"Prancing Pony, got it." The teen nodded as he got up, hearing a lot of fluttering as he did so. Upon standing up Wilhelm saw the source of the fluttering, which belonged to a flock of birds. The birds were all tiny, small enough to sit in his palm, and they had gathered around him, looking at him directly. The teen was about to question the birds but before he could mentally ask about why all the birds were there, the flock all flew right at him. Wilhelm exclaimed in shock as the birds swarmed and pecked him, before suddenly they stopped and rushed away just as fast as they came at him.
"Wilhelm are you okay?" It was Selena, who was giving him a worried look.
The teen looked at her with an expression of shock. "What was that?!"
"Those were anti-birds. They're birds who have a knack for pestering those with low mana, or no mana in your case." Selena explained as she quickly checked where he got pecked on his arms. "A lot live near this area and since Captain Fuegoleon isn't here they must've came back and saw you."
The teen rubbed his arm in one of the spots that had been pecked. "So not only will other people mess with me over my lack of mana, even the birds join in?"
"They mostly live here and west of here in that area of the common realm. So only there would they really mess with you if no one with a decent amount of mana is near you." Selena then looked at the teen's head. "One is sitting on your head."
Wilhelm moved his hand to on top of his head and poked what definitely was a bird. "Hey get off!" He tried to swipe it off, only for the bird to fly around his arm, peck his check and land back on his head. The teen tried again to move the bird only for it to do the same thing, and then a third time. After the third attempt Wilhelm just stopped trying to get rid of the bird. "Do they normally try this?"
"Not usually." The girl studied the anti-bird. "It seems to like your head."
"The thing is only attacking me when I try to move it." Wilhelm exhaled. "For now it's best to leave the thing alone I guess."
Selena raised her hand to the bird and pat its head. The anti-bird looked different from other anti-birds, it had the usual color of feathers; black at the back, white at the front, red on its face and a black beak. However it also had a pair of horns on either side of its head and a pair of long black feathers sticking up from the top of its head, and a pair of tails that form an arrow at the tip.
"This one looks different from the rest of the birds." Selena commented, as the bird turned to face her, it's slanted eyes giving off a feeling of apathy or boredom as it did. "And it didn't leave when I approached."
Wilhelm was about to ask why that matters when he remembered that Selena actually has a lot of mana, and the birds only bothered people with low mana. They probably only left Wilhelm because she was there, well all but the one sitting on his head. Deciding it didn't matter he looked at Selena and saw nothing new with her. "You didn't get your magic artifact?"
At that Selena gained embarrassment. "I tried... but I forgot how heavy it is."
The mana-less teen gained a confused look. "What sort of artifact is this?"
"It's... Let me show you." Selena turned to leave the coliseum, still red due to her embarrassment.
Wilhelm didn't respond, but did follow her. The anti-bird still on his head as they went.
A bit later they had arrived at a gated house, three floors in height. The building was a mansion by size and design, and Wilhelm's mind wandered to the thought of how royal Selena's family really is.
"This is House Iara." Selena did a motion with her arms. "It's my home when not with the Blue Roses at this point."
"So the Blue Roses don't belong to Kiten?"
"Nope. Only stationed there since the tension with Diamond is higher than normal. Today is actually the first time I have been home since we were moved to Kiten three weeks ago." Selena knocked on the door to her home.
The door was opened by a man in an outfit that made Wilhelm catch on to him being a servant. "Miss Iara you have returned quickly."
"I just needed Wilhelm so he could get the artifact off the ground." Selena explained as she walked past the servant, Wilhelm following.
"So he has enough mana to avoid the risks of the sword?" The servant asked in curiosity, not having used his mana to sense Wilhelm yet.
"Sword?" Wilhelm got confused.
"Actually Wilhelm has no mana. I thought he could negate it because of that."
"Is that so?" The man gained a sour look as he turned to Wilhelm when he heard the teen had no mana, a look Wilhelm hated but ignored. The look also gained a bit of disgust when the man saw an anti-bird just sitting on the boy's head.
Wilhelm moved past the servant to follow Selena and repeated his question. "Sword? Is the artifact a sword?"
Selena stopped halfway up the stairs to the second floor. "It's a sword. My great grandfather found it one day and kept it as a heirloom. The problem is that it's so heavy and absorbs mana from anyone touching it." She turned to go back up the stairs. "I tried to just take it off the mantle on the wall and it made me exhausted and I dropped it on the floor. It kinda cut into the floor and we've had issues trying to move it."
"You got exhausted?" Wilhelm didn't think it could be so heavy that just moving it for a second could make people tired.
"If we use too much mana we can get physically tired at times. I took too long to move it and got more mana than I thought taken from me." Selena had turned redder than when she was at the coliseum.
"Wouldn't I just pass out completely then?" Wilhelm asked. "If it tires you out from taking mana I should just instantly drop to the floor."
The girl stopped and gained more embarrassment. "... I didn't even think of that... You don't have to test that if you don't want to."
"We came all the way here from Kiten, not at least testing it would make your time be wasted."
"But you could pass out."
"And? Last time I touched a sword willingly I intentionally got stabbed. Falling to the floor without injury is not as bad." Wilhelm stated.
Selena couldn't help but give a light laugh, and then saw Wilhelm's expression so she explained herself. "Your voice makes that funny. You delivered it so flatly."
"Wasn't intentional." They rounded a corner and Wilhelm saw a sword on the ground, half the blade lodged into the wood. "You actually dropped it..."
"I didn't mean to!" The girl huffed.
Wilhelm approached the weapon and looked at it. The blade had silver markings on the blade and had a bright white color to the metal. The sword also had a heavily ornate hilt with a four-sided guard, a grip with a spiral design, and a sphere for the pommel. "So I just try to grab it and pick it up?"
"Just touch it, don't overdo it and hurt yourself if you do pass out." Selena had pulled out her grimoire out of worry and stood next to Wilhelm.
Wilhelm nodded and lowered himself to a squat and put his hand on the hilt, and felt nothing. He kept his hand there for a moment to make sure and then turned to Selena. "Yea I feel nothing."
"That's good. You can try picking it up."
The teen nodded and then wrapped his left hand around the hilt, trying to pick it up. It was indeed heavy so he grabbed it with both hands, taking effort into it but standing up nonetheless. "I think I may need to increase my stats before I can use this properly." He stated as he turned back to Selena.
"You don't feel anything from holding it? No tiredness or anything? You're completely okay?"
"I'm fine. The sword is just a bit heavier than what I can work with for now." He held it as straight as he could. The blade was, from what he could tell, two and a half feet long, which appeared to be normal for a sword. The only unnatural thing was how heavy it was, if the magic ability the sword had was excluded from thought.
"There's a baldric and sheath for it right here." Selena went to a dresser next to them, opening a drawer and pulling out the mentioned items. "My grandfather had them made hoping to one day use the sword, but he died before he could use it, and no one since then was willing to or had the strength to use it."
Wilhelm looked at the leather items held out to him before looking at Selena. "Are you sure you should be giving all this to me? These are family heirlooms and I am a random guy you have known for less than a week."
"Yes, and you're not random. You're my friend and I know you'd get more use out of it instead of it being here on a wall doing nothing."
"It's still a fam-"
"You can't say no." Selena gave him a smile as she held out the baldric and sheath again. "I know you have issues accepting things for some reason but I also have issues when a friend can't accept help."
At that Wilhelm looked at her silently for a few seconds, before sighing. "Okay." He carefully put the sword down to take the sheath, a sleek gray metal sheath. Putting the blade in the sheath he grabbed the straps.
"You can hook the sword to your belt too if you don't want it on your back." Selena offered.
"Given my lack of mana I need more movement. I think having it on the belt would get in the way." Wilhelm reasoned as he put the strap over his chest. Two ends of the baldric wrapped around his rib cage while one end went around over his left shoulder to meet the others on his back. Once he fastened the pieces correctly he moved his arm to make sure it didn't feel awkward with the leather on his shoulder. It was all okay so he want to grab the sheathed sword, them released how awkward it would be to try to attach the thing to the baldric with it on his back. He looked at Selena with little embarrassment. "Could you attach it to this?"
"I sure can." Selena took the sword from Wilhelm and lurched forward under the weight, before Wilhelm grabbed the weapon again to help with the weight.
"Sorry I forgot it's heavy." He apologized.
"I did too." Selena laughed. "I think you should probably take that off and attach it that way."
"Probably the smart thing to do." Wilhelm took off the baldric and then attached his sheathed sword to it. After that he put it back on his torso and rolled his left shoulder to get it used to the weight of the sword causing the leather to put pressure on his shoulder.
"Does it throw off your balance too much?"
"A little bit. I just have to increase my stats to make it easier." Wilhelm kept moving his arms to get used to it when he looked down. "Although my jacket does make the strap feel awkward."
"Put it underneath?" Selena offered.
Wilhelm shook his head. "I need it to have easy access, jacket may get in the way like that. I'll just deal with it. I could probably get used to it anyways."
"So you still aren't against it?" Selena closed the drawers and begin to move down the hall, Wilhelm following.
"I thought you said that I couldn't say no?" Wilhelm asked.
"I mean... you can and could always just leave the sword here, but I really think you should use the sword since it seems perfect for you. But that's still your choice. I just didn't want you to say no only because you didn't want a gift."
"I-" He was about to say he wouldn't have just said no, when he realized he did try saying no, to everything she offered him. Wilhelm summed it up to and blamed his upbringing making him distrustful. "Thank you."
"You're welcome!" Selena chirped as she opened a door, and then shut it before turning red and looking at Wilhelm.
"What?"
Selena took a second to speak. "Stay here please."
"Why?"
"Because..." She then opened the door and went in the room, shutting it behind her a bit more than she meant to.
Wilhelm stood there and blinked, before rubbing it off and looking around the hallway and at the paintings on the walls. He would have gone farther down the hall if he wasn't told to stay in the hall, so he stayed at least a few seconds from the door.
A thought entered his head and the teen put his hand on his head, feeling the bird still up there.
"Why are you here?" He nudged the bird, knowing he wasn't getting an answer from it anyways but still wanting to voice the question. "My head is not a nest."
As if responding to him, the bird pecked his head.
"I'll use my sword on you."
He got pecked again. Wilhelm groaned in annoyance as he decided to leave the bird alone, and went back to just looking at all of the things around the area. He estimated that a single base he saw could possibly cost as much as all the food he has stolen over the years just to be able to eat, and something about that thought made him look back at his situation and sigh.
His original life really was terrible, and in the barely-a-week time he had been in the Clover Kingdom his life had become far better, but he was still so far from close to even the middle of lifestyles of this world. His lack of mana left him once again as the bottom scraps of this society and-
No
Wilhelm shut that thought down. He couldn't still see himself as the bottom in this world. Even if he had no mana he had, in less than a week, gained the respect of some magic knights. He had managed to help them detain a Diamond mage, successfully fight three others and cause two to have to flee while he stood his ground. He was now in a royal capital with tutoring from a magic knight and no longer fighting for scraps in alleys of a filthy city. His situation was now far better and he had to appreciate all the small ways it has become better.
The door behind Wilhelm opened, getting his attention as he turned back to Selena who had quickly closed the door again once she entered the hallway.
"Sorry." Selena had a sheepish expression. "I just felt weird about a boy seeing my room."
"It's fine." Wilhelm didn't question it for a second.
"I still have an hour before Gina said we would have to get going." Selena took the conversation away from the current topic. "Do you want to do anything before we leave?"
Before Wilhelm could speak, his stomach growled. He held a neutral expression as he spoke, acting like he didn't hear his own body. "I may be hungry."
"We have a kitchen downstairs, I can have them make you something." Selena offered as she began to walk back down the hall, having a small smile at Wilhelm's behavior.
Wilhelm stopped following to speak. "Actually, I should go to that Inn that Sir Fuegoleon told me had a room for me, that way they at least know who I am."
"That's a better idea, lead the way."
It took a bit for them to make their way back to the coliseum, which Wilhelm led them back to as to start the search from there. After that the two had walked around the area, figuring it to be close by the coliseum if Fuegoleon just gave Wilhelm the name.
"So, the Inn, it's called The Prancing Pony?" Selena repeated the name to make sure she got it right.
Wilhelm nodded as he looked at signs outside each building. "I wasn't given proper directions, that is the name though."
"We've been looking for a minute... mmm..." Selena made a humming sound as she left Wilhelm and approached someone on the street.
Wilhelm watched her talk to the man who took a second to respond, before pointing behind him. After he finished speaking she gave a loud enough thanks that Wilhelm heard it from where he was, and she returned to Wilhelm.
"You asked him for directions?"
"Yup, he said it's two streets that way, and we turn at the second street to our right. From there it should be in our sight." Selena reported as the two walked.
"Thank you, I wouldn't have asked for directions and it would've taken me longer to find the place."
"I... actually figured that." Selena admitted. "You don't exactly communicate well with people."
"I don't normally communicate with anyone."
"You don't? I thought you were just rough." Selena managed to make that not sound rude.
"I don't want to get into it, but I have probably talked more to you over the past few days than I talked to anyone back where I'm from."
"Really?" Selena asked.
"Then how come you don't sound like a dumb-dumb?" The sudden question from Gina made the two realize she had arrived and was floating above the two, upside down. The air around her looked distorted and had a blue glow to it that matched the glow her grimoire had.
"Gina!" Selena half exclaimed out of surprise of her squad mate being there and also scolding Gina for sounding rude.
"Hey-o." The pink girl dropped to the ground, perfectly upright. "I wanted to see if I can bug Wilhelm during his training with the captain of the Crimson Lions and he wasn't at the coliseum anymore, which was lame! Then I was gonna go bug you at your place so we can leave earlier, and then on the way there I saw you two here."
"Sir Fuegoleon had to leave for an emergency." Wilhelm explained.
"Oh that. Yea a group of dummies straight up tried to attack the royal castle a bit ago. I was getting goodies from our headquarters and heard about it." Gina looked bored talking about it.
"Was any-" Selena tried to get details but was cut off.
"Shut up! Is that a bird?!" Gina pointed dramatically at Wilhelm's head, where the odd looking anti-bird was still sitting. "You have a pet bird now?!"
"It won't leave me alone." Wilhelm said flatly. "It's annoying." At that the bird pecked Wilhelm's head, making him look irritated.
"It's so cute!" Gina squealed. "You have a pet bird now!"
"This thing is just annoying." The teen with the bird on his head responded, prompting the bird to peck him again and both girls to unintentionally laugh.
"It likes you! Don't be rude!" Gina ordered. "Pets get to choose their owners and it has chosen you!"
"I refuse."
Gina made a giant X motion with her arms. "No choice! Now we have to name your pet!"
"I'm not naming it." Wilhelm was definitely not naming the thing. It showed understanding of his words to an extent and he didn't want it to think by giving it a name that it could stay.
"You're lame so you don't get to participate." The spatial magic user stated. "Selena we must now name the cute bird!"
"I don't think-" Selena was about to side with Wilhelm before she was cut off again.
"Lame! The bird is now named Nero, because it has cute black feathers and those cool black horns." Gina pointed to the bird. "Raise a wing if you accept your name, Nero."
Surprisingly, the bird held up one wing.
"I guess it's name is Nero." Selena looked at Wilhelm who looked like the situation bad exhausted him.
"The bird is not staying with me." Wilhelm stated flatly.
"Nero, peck Wilhelm if he is a butt who has no say in this." Gina spoke to the bird, her words making Wilhelm sigh.
Nero looked at Wilhelm's head and then stood up, and then hopped off his head onto his left shoulder.
"Nero doesn't think Wilhelm's a... butt." Selena commented.
"Nah, she just doesn't want him to use the sword on any of us. Also I now have to speak about that sword. Where the heck did you get that?!"
"It was a gift from Selena." Wilhelm rubbed his head where the bird had been previously sitting for the last hour.
Gina gave Selena a sly look. "So that's the gift she gave you?"
"Unlike us he can actually wield it." She responded before Gina could make any suggestive comments, knowing that Gina was definitely thinking of a few to say.
"I can't properly wield it yet, I have to get used to the weight first, and then learn how to actually use it like a sword."
"Let me use it." Gina held her hands out like Wilhelm would just hand her the sword.
"No." Wilhelm responded flatly.
"Why noooot?" The small girl made a whining noise.
"It's heavy enough that I struggle holding it and you are half my size." Wilhelm pointed out.
For a second they were silent until Gina raised a single finger in Wilhelm's direction. "Don't mock my petite proportions."
"I wasn't. Even if you were strong enough, the sword will still take your mana and exhaust you."
"Oh, it's a blood sucking sword. Lead with that." Gina dropped the topic and looked at Selena. "I am ready to go when you are."
Selena looked at Wilhelm and then back at Gina. She opened her mouth to speak but no words came out, not sure what to say. She wanted to say she wasn't ready yet, but that was a lie as she had everything she needed to go. And if Gina learned the reason she said she wasn't ready was because she wanted to spend some time with Wilhelm then Selena would never hear the end of it.
"Unless you want us to bug you more." Gina turned to Wilhelm while Selena over-thought how to speak. "I know you find us endearingly adorable."
Wilhelm just looked at the small girl. "You told a bird to peck me."
"Endearingly."
"I think we should go." Selena sighed. "Captain Charlotte has a lot to deal with so we can't waste time getting back."
Gina mentally groaned, wanting to call Selena a doofus for not seeing the chance Gina was trying to give her to have a bit more time around Wilhelm. She also couldn't just say that they are staying now or else it'd be completely obvious to Wilhelm that the girls were staying because of him. "Alright. It was fun meeting you Wilhelm. Take care of Nero or I'll find more birds to peck you!"
"I don't want the bird." Wilhelm once again stated, the spoken bird not having left his shoulder.
"Nero peck Wilhelm when he starts being a butt when we aren't here." Gina said to the bird.
"Bye Wilhelm." Selena said awkwardly, not sure she really wanted to leave. "Maybe we'll see each other again when the Blue Roses aren't stationed in Kiten anymore."
"It was nice meeting you." Wilhelm held out his hand.
Selena, as awkwardly as possible she believed, took the hand and shook it. "It was nice to-" She got cut off as she fell forward, right into Wilhelm's chest.
Luckily for them the mana-less teen reacted in time and caught her by the shoulders. Up this close Selena was more aware of how Wilhelm had a few inches over her. Without really thinking she ended up hugging him, which made the guy gain a surprised expression.
Gina had actually pushed Selena because she thought the two leaving things with a handshake was lame as hell, and that a hug was cooler and sweeter. She had a smug grin the whole time as she enjoyed her work.
After only two seconds Selena let go of Wilhelm, feeling awkward for the action she turned red. "Good luck with your training Wilhelm... I can't wait to see you become a magic knight."
Wilhelm had a shocked expression, and wasn't sure how to speak, or what to even say if he remembered how talking worked. His head had fogged over and he got an odd pulling sensation from Selena. Or at least he thought it was Selena until he realized it was a necklace she had. He didn't recognize it from before but the gem on it stood out to him, like it was reaching out to him. The gem was a bright white, circular with eight sides to it. The jewel had a diamond pattern etched into it with a star inside of that, both patterns with a gold gleam to them. Wilhelm couldn't shake the feeling he got from the gem, and his eyes were not moving from the stone.
Not aware of where his gaze was in actuality, Selena began to think he was looking at something else, and turned turned red.
Before anything else could be said, Gina made a portal. "Now we go! While he is distracted by feeling your big boobs!" She grabbed Selena and pulled her in while Selena began stuttering out random sounds, Gina laughing as the portal closed.
With that, Wilhelm was left alone in the street, the feeling of fogginess leaving his head. He blinked as he questioned the sensation, and began to go find the Inn.
A figure stood in the middle of a cavern, ignoring the treasures all around him as he stood there, holding a journal as he held a gem. He looked at the gem, a circular silver colored jewel with a pattern etched into it of a circle with a crescent on each side encompassing it. In the journal was drawings of multiple gems, and the one he held matched a drawing.
"We found it?" A man walked up to him, his grimoire floating next to him, a green glow making the diamond on the cover more prominent. "We got one of the magic stones now?"
"No." The figure said in response, as he gripped the jewel. He felt mana surge into him and grinned as his grimoire gained a blood red glow. He turned and made a motion with his arm, a slice ripping through the air and his ex-comrades throat. "I have one of the magic stones now."
The Diamond mage who had his throat ripped open gained shock at the betrayal and fell over with a kick from the figure, dying without a word.
The figure looked at the journal, looking at the sketches of the other magic stones. "And I will get all of them."

A/N: End of chapter five, sorry for the week I took off, I took some time off to work on plot details I wanted to change, specifically about three details in this chapter. If you must know, those details were Nero, and the two magic stones seen so far.
Yes, Wilhelm's sword is the Demon Dweller sword that Asta finds in the dungeon early on in the manga. If anyone was going "wait a minute" well congrats on catching it.
I didn't get to Mimosa more in this chapter, but don't worry, chapter six has that covered.
The only review so far for chapter four is from a guy on Discord, so this area is blank again.
As I say at the bottom of every chapter, I have a discord server with the link in my Bio.
Hope you enjoyed this chapter, let me know how it was and have a good day!
