CHAPTER ONE: The Lost Child

The world praised the name of Jamie Albus Potter, the Boy-Who-Lived.

A seemingly-ordinary little boy, who'd managed to do the impossible: survive the Killing Curse, vanquish the Dark Lord Voldemort and put an end to the horrors of the Great War. Nobody knew how he'd done it, exactly, nor did they know how such a thing were possible.

But, then again, word had been spread by Albus Dumbledore, and verified by Lord James Charles Potter, so…who'd be so foolish as to doubt one of the greatest Aurors of the 20th Century, not to mention the man who'd vanquished Grindelwald, and was the only one that Voldemort had feared?

While the world chose to celebrate this good time, however, behind the scenes, something else was going on.

"James! Thank you for coming; sit down…lemon drop?"

"Thank you, Headmaster," replied James, helping himself to the sweet, which seemed to help banish some of the bags around his eyes, as well as the wear-and-tear of grief, loss and mourning that had struck James. As he sucked on the tangy sweet, James also sniffled, wiping at his eyes before, crunching the sweet between his teeth, he coughed once, "Oh…sorry, Albus; I…I…"

"I understand, my boy," replied Albus, a note of consolation in his voice as he smiled fondly before he asked, "How are you doing? Have you managed to get some sleep since…since it happened?"

"I keep waking from a bad string of night terrors," admitted James, clutching a wedding band he wore around his neck, while his eyes burned with loss, pain and even rage as he explained, "I try to share my fears with Lily, but…but then, when I turn to speak to her…I…I remember; she…she isn't here anymore."

"I'm sure Severus would be willing to help you sleep, my boy."

"Not if he was the last of last resorts on the planet," argued James, earning a sigh from Albus.

Honestly, sometimes, he wished the two grown men would let their hatreds for one another die with the tragic loss of Lily Potter, if not be left in the past where they belonged. At the same time, Albus knew he had to tread carefully, if only because James' emotions were worse than thin ice right now; he was frayed, as paranoid and unhinged as they come and, worse, with the recent celebrations of his son, Jamie's, newfound celebrity status, James was likely fending off more than his fair share of well-wishers.

Still, this was what Albus had asked James to come and speak to him about, "Tell me, my boy, how are the children?"

"Jamie's sleeping like a little angel," replied James, rubbing at the bridge of his nose, while he smiled fondly as he explained, "I know he's only two years old, but…it's weird; it's like he knows and even accepts his Mum's not coming home."

"Interesting…and a little sad, too, I suppose," said Albus, before he asked, "And what of young Harry?"

"He's being a little monster," replied James, a note of actual venom, as well as hatred in his voice as he explained, "Waking me and Jamie from our sleeps with his screaming. Complaining of owies on his forehead; I mean, you saw that scar, right?"

Albus nodded.

"It was only cut into him because of how that psycho blew the door off its hinges, but, honestly, to listen to him, you'd think he was possessed by evil or something. And then there's his Magic; it goes absolutely haywire! I swear, Albus: I've had to repair the windows in the nursery six times in the past two days alone; and when he screams for his Mother…well…it upsets Jamie and it…it makes me remember…and…and I just…I don't know what to do."

"You could always send him away," suggested Albus, though, as cruel as it sounded to even suggest such a thing, Dumbledore was surprised, if not a little hurt, to see a look of delight cross James' face.

"You know what? I think I will."

"Excellent; you know, I'm sure Lily's sister…"

"Oh, no need to bother that snooty bitch, old man," said James, his left eye twitching while his smile became almost-venomous.

It was a look that both frightened and surprised Albus himself as James chuckled slyly.

"I know exactly where to send the little beast…you just leave it all to me."

"James…" Albus began, but before he could finish, James thanked him for his time and left the old man to his thoughts, which were full of nerves, unease and a hint of dread.

He had intended to have Harry sent to Petunia Dursley – Lily's sister – to be raised away from the spotlight and, ideally, away from anything that might force him to become jealous of his younger – by 24 hours – brother, before sending the boy's Hogwarts letter when Harry turned eleven. By that time, Harry would be able to understand the ways of the Muggles and be able to appreciate what family meant, which also meant he would be able to accept Jamie's fame and not want to use it, but rather support it.

Then, the Potter Boys would become a force to be reckoned with, with Jamie as the Sword and Harry as the Shield, as they stood against any possible rumours or events hinting at a Second Coming of Lord Voldemort.

Who knows?

Maybe one day, the two of them would be like Albus and Minerva; leading Hogwarts and guiding future generations to their true calling.

What a Golden Age that would be.

However, the look in James' eyes: a crazy, almost-determined look, and the confidence in his voice.

It left a very foul taste in Albus' mouth; one that even he was afraid to follow up on, if only out of fear of what he may find.

'Please, my boy,' thought Albus, shivering to himself as he popped two lemon drops into his mouth.

'Choose your next move carefully!'

"Prongs? What…what are you doing?"

"What does it look like I'm doing, Moony?" asked James, packing up the last few things in a suitcase, before he turned to his old friend, who looked on in horror and disbelief as James explained, "I'm packing everything he will need to look after himself."

He pointed to a two-year-old boy who was currently snoozing in a large blanket, which had already been wrapped around his body and tucked up very tightly, as though the one wrapping him up had wanted to make absolutely certain he couldn't get away. Beneath the folds, a small, unruly mop of black hair could be seen, as well as a fierce-looking, red-tinted scar that was shaped like a bolt of lightning.

"Harry?" asked Remus Lupin, watching as James tossed the case next to the blanket, "What…what are you doing, James? Where…where are you sending him?"

"To the only one who'd even care about him," replied James, shrinking down the case before he tucked it into the folds of the blanket, while James looked up to Remus as he added, "Actually, you know, it's good you're here, Moony: I mean, it's your fault I met the selfish little slut to begin with. So, if you're really a friend, you can do the right thing by me and my boy and take this back to where it belongs: I'm sure that drugging little dyke is probably ravenous to get her mitts on her lost property."

"Lost…oh…oh…Merlin's beard!" gasped Remus, looking from James to the sleeping infant, before he asked, "But…but I thought Harry was…"

"Right, because obviously twins can be born a full day apart," drawled James, scoffing amusingly as he added, "Think it through, Moony; she dumped him on me while Lily was in labour. All she told me was that I needed to honour my duties, even though she'd basically raped me to make this all happen. Then she left and, even weirder, even the Healers said Harry was mine and…and…and…"

"Lily's."

"DON'T SAY HER NAME!" Snapped James, earning a sad shake of the head from Remus.

"My old friend, you…you're not well; you…you're still grieving. You need time to think…you need help…please; think about this…"

"I am! And I'm telling you…beast!"

Suddenly, Remus' eyes widened in alarm and horror as James rounded on him, "If you even think her name again, I will make damn sure that your other Daddy knows exactly where to find his lost cub! Now, do as you're told, buck up and be a man for once, monster, and get this out of my sight; since you introduced us, I'm sure you know where to go."

"I…I do…" whispered Remus, summoning the blanket-wrapped bundle to him, before he looked up at James with barely-flickering hope present in his green eyes, "But James…please…I know you may be angry because of what Artemis did…but please…think of your son…"

"Jamie won't care," replied James, scoffing in self-deluded amusement as he explained, "He'll be too busy having fun with his real family and his friends, all of whom can devote their time to the Boy-Who-Lived and helping him be the best…oh, Lily…you'll be so proud and…and then, maybe, you can even forgive me; what do you think, Moony? Moony?"

Looking up from his ranting, James saw only an empty room, the sight of which made him scoff as he waved his wand around the room, cleaning it of any and all hints that anyone had lived there.

"Typical coward; always putting his tail between his legs when things get too serious. Well, I guess he chose his side…now, I need to make sure Jamie can't be challenged by that bastard, for what's rightfully his…where did I leave that Disinheriting Kit?"

HVH

'I'm sorry, Harry.'

As Remus reappeared in what looked like a thick, dense forest, he let his green eyes look down at the still-sleeping form of the toddler known as Harry James Potter, his expression a mixture of pain and disbelief.

He knew James was grieving, and even remorseful because of how he hadn't been at home when Voldemort had attacked the house, but to go this far…to renounce any ties to his own son and the brother – well…half-brother – of Jamie?

It wasn't Harry's fault that James had been thinking with his dick when Remus introduced him and Lily to one of the best friends, and most-reliable sources of a proper Wolfsbane Potion – and not the diluted pig-swill that Snivellus had given them for him.

Neither was it the boy's fault that, despite all protests of drugging and foul play, James had been one hundred percent willing and cognisant when he'd bedded said friend, knocking her up and sending many care packages to ensure that their son was going to pop out a healthy, happy, bouncing baby boy.

In fact, Lily had also found out about James' indiscretion and, being the caring soul that she was, she'd not only forgiven him, but also asked said friend of Remus' to allow Lily to be named godmother, with Remus named Harry's godfather – while Sirius Black was Jamie's godfather, and Minerva McGonagall, his godmother.

But now?

Because Lily was gone?

Because Voldemort was vanquished?

Because Harry was, clearly, suffering from some Dark-Magical-Spawned malady as a result of the attack?

Because of all that, James had decided he wouldn't be responsible, or loving, for his son anymore; instead, he would devote all his time and effort to Jamie while Harry was to be cast aside and left out in the cold.

Remus knew something was wrong with his friend, even when he'd willingly bedded the person Remus was about to meet, but this?

This wasn't grief…this was madness, insanity, ego and vanity all rolled into one.

As he walked through the woods, Remus passed through what he dimly-recognised as a veiled ward, which caused the woodland ahead to vanish, only to be replaced by a glamorous-looking manor estate, which was already lit with signs of life, and several large, metallic gates, all of which made Remus cringe as he walked up the path towards them.

'I hate Argentalium,' thought Remus, stopping next to one of the gates before, raising a hand, he pressed it firmly onto a blackened plaque, which depicted a crescent moon with two arrows cutting through the curve, forming a V-shape at the arrowheads, while the split shafts and the moon seemed to create an H shape, which might have looked odd, but also gave the right impression.

As Remus removed his hand from the crest, he felt the annoying tingles from the metal in the gates lifting, just enough that the gates opened, revealing two figures who seemed to pop in from out of nowhere.

One was a tall, rugged-looking man with wild dark hair and cool, mercurial-silver-coloured eyes; he was dressed in simple-looking clothes, but, as he appeared, he also revealed a longsword, which was wrapped in chains at his side, and a wand, which he kept pointed at Remus as he looked him up and down.

Next to him, however, was a young woman with smooth-looking skin and red hair that, unlike Lily's, looked more like the colour of redwoods, with several black streaks here and there. Her eyes were a bright, piercing shade of viridian, with silvery flecks in her glare and, like the man next to her, she too was dressed casually, but also prepared for battle, as was evident by the throwing stars she had visible in her hands as she too squared up to Remus warningly.

Holding up his free hand – since his other currently held the sleeping infant – Remus drew in a calm breath before he explained, "My name is Remus Lupin: I was born to human parents and turned by the monster, Fenrir Greyback. After being disinherited by my Father for nearly biting his godson, I was taken in by the Legion and raised, and taught, to control myself with help from Artemis Van Helsing and her Father, Gabriel, the latter of whom once told me he saw me as the son he never had, but he couldn't claim me because he didn't want to have to explain to his Grandfather why a Big Bad Wolf now carried the name Van Helsing."

Even with everything he'd just said, Remus noticed neither person was willing to relax.

After only a moment, however, the man with the sword indicated the blankets, "Show us what you have there, Mr Lupin."

"Something tells me you know, Master Gabriel, but if that is what you wish," replied Remus, gently lowering his free hand, so he could pull back the folds of the blanket.

When he did so, Remus heard a gasp of horror from the redheaded woman before, dropping her throwing stars to the floor, she ran towards Remus, snatching the bundle from him as she gasped, "Harrison! What…what in the name of Michael is…why is he here? Why now? I thought…we had an agreement!"

"James," said Remus, earning a furious look from the redhead, which, were it not for the fact they were two completely different women from different families, might have made Remus think he was looking at Lily incarnate, if not her twin sister, as he explained, "He's gone mad with grief and…well…apparently, from what I've heard, anyway, Harry's been up screaming most nights since…since the night Lily died…"

"We heard," said the dark-haired man, relaxing his grip on his sword, before he looked to the redhead as he asked, "Is he hurt, Artemis?"

"Not on the outside, Daddy," answered the redhead, before she became cold, fierce and enraged as she touched a finger to the scar on Harry's forehead, her voice turning icy and dangerous as she hissed, "But inside is another story: I sense a Lucifer-be-damned Horcrux concealed within this monstrosity! And…my Gods!"

"What?" asked the man identified as Artemis' Father, Gabriel, his own expression cold, but serious and unwavering, "What is it?"

Looking up at her Father, Artemis swallowed hard before she indicated the bundle in her arms as she explained in an awestruck voice, "I know how the Dark Lord Voldemort was vanquished, Dad…it wasn't Jamie Potter…it was him…Harrison!"

"What?" chorused Gabriel and Remus, "How?"

Artemis' answer left Gabriel's expression one of pure disbelief, as well as wonder, as he stared at his daughter while she answered him;

"He's been born with the power of the Vindicator…the Dark-Hunter's Force! It…it's inside him, even now…but it's unstable; oh…Daddy…please, we…we need to help him!"

Suffice to say, Remus Lupin's unexpected appearance at the stately home of the Van Helsing Clan – one of three Clans that made up the ancient and mysterious, as well as, believably, rumoured Dark-Hunter Legion – was soon put on the very back-board as Gabriel ushered Remus, Artemis and the still-sleeping Harry inside.

The gates to the estate slammed shut with an audible clang just a few seconds later before the whole house seemed to fade into the shadows.

As though it had never been there at all.

So, talk about a spooky, and unfortunate, start: James' madness has forced him to make a damning choice, but will this skeleton come leaping out of the closet again and, if so, what will happen when it does?

Also, what could this 'Dark-Hunter-Force' be exactly and why does Artemis seem so surprised, if not amazed, to know that the boy formerly known as Harry James Potter was born with it?

Keep Reading to Find Out

Next Chapter: Sometime later, the Marauders reunite to try and discuss what has happened, but the truths that are revealed are going to shake the foundations of a bond that, once upon a time, left them as thick as thieves; also, Artemis spends time with the boy who is, apparently, her son as she prepares him for the future…
