- ( 3 MONTHS LATER ) -

It's been about three months since Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura graduated from the academy, and passed Kakashi's survival test. The newly assembled team met in the same training ground that they performed their first exercise everyday, whether it was for training or meeting up in preparation for getting assigned a new mission.

Though, to the three genin's disappointment, their team was still limited to performing D-Rank missions only. With how much time that the team has been assembled, they have already racked up around 30 D-Rank completed missions.

When it came to training, It mainly consisted of teamwork exercises, and Kakashi doing one on one training with Sakura. The teamwork exercises were self explanatory, as while Naruto and Sasuke have trained together for months, they didn't know how to work together at that point. When it came to Sakura, Kakashi knew that she was far behind compared to her teammates, and proceeded to work on that.

So far, Sakura mainly trained in her chakra reserves, attempting to increase them. After all, while Sakura did have better chakra control than both Naruto and Sasuke, she had no where near to the same amount of chakra as her comrades. Kakashi also taught her a couple simple defensive Doton ninjutsu.

During all of this, Naruto and Sasuke attempting to increase their skills, but didn't make as much progress as they wished.

Sasuke increased his arsenal of Katon ninjutsu, and was able to gain his second tomoe in his Sharingan.

Naruto had increased his chakra control, after learning another simple chakra control exercise from Kakashi. With his further increased chakra control, he was capable of using his Kunai Kawarimi no jutsu more times than before. He also added two Suiton ninjutsu to his arsenal.

After seeing both Naruto and Sasuke using tanto kenjutsu, Kakashi began to train them how to use them better. Unknown to him, both of the tanto were given to them by Shisui, and the one given to Naruto was Shisui's old tanto after he originally offered it to Sasuke declined, and wanted his own.

Currently, Team 7 was training in cooperation exercises. Kakashi was nearby under a tree reading his book in the shade.

The gray haired jonin looked up and observed each of his students.

'Sakura. You've definitely changed and grown, since you first joined. There is still going to be some things you'll have trouble with, but I'll help you once we get to that point.' Kakashi thought about the pink haired genin.

'Sasuke. You have matured. I'm not sure what it was, but your change was needed, and I'm proud of you. Your sharingan will be an important piece of your shinobi skills, which I will help you with.' He thought about his Uchiha student.

The analytical eye of Kakashi then looked over at his white haired student. 'Sensei... I have your son on my team. I promise to you that I will protect him and train him to be even stronger than you. I won't allow what happened to our team, to occur again.' Kakashi thought with determination.

'After all, my students aren't the only ones who are training...' Kakashi thought to himself.

Looking back up, he saw that his team was finished with the exercise and was now resting.

"Alright, good. Now you three, come over here real quick." Kakashi ordered them.

The genin walked over to their sensei, waiting to see what he had to say.

"What is it, Kakashi-sensei?" Sakura asked.

"I bet it's another D-Rank mission." Sasuke spoke up, making his female teammate groan, and white haired teammate look down at his feet.

"No, not quite..." the jonin said, confusing them.

The man narrowed his single uncovered eye at them. 'Yep. I believe that they are ready to face that challenge.' Kakashi thought.

"Nevermind that, we have to go to the Hokage office." he said, receiving a depressing groan from his female student.

"I knew it..." she said upsetly, as their team made their way to the Hokage tower.

After a rather uneventful journey to the Hokage office, which was filled with Sakura complaining about D-Rank missions, with Sasuke grunting in agreement, with Naruto attempting to be the level headed member of the group. Meanwhile Kakashi simply eye-smiled the entire way there.

Currently they were now standing across from the old Professor, who had a small smile at their appearance.

Naruto narrowed his eyes at the Hokage, thinking back to the first time he met him after he had became a genin.

- ( FLASHBACK ) -

It's been a couple days since Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura had passed Kakashi's survival exercise test.

At this moment, Naruto was standing across from the Hokage, who had a serious look in his eyes. Not too long ago, an ANBU under the Hokage's direct control had approached him, and told him of the meeting.

"It's been a while Naruto-kun, I'm sure you've been keeping up on your shinobi training." Hiruzen assumed.

"Yes, Hokage-sama. If I may ask, what might this meeting be about?" the white haired boy questioned his leader.

A nod came from the elder, "Before that, I'd like to approach you about a certain subject." he said, getting a nod of understanding from the genin.

"I heard from Uchiha Shisui, that you discovered that he was still alive. I also heard that Sasuke is also aware of this." The Hokage said with a deep tone.

"Yes, that is correct, Hokage-sama." Naruto responded carefully, on edge after hearing his tone.

"If that's so, then I order both you and Sasuke to never reveal this information to anyone besides each other, Shisui, and myself. The only exception would be if Shisui himself finds someone else trustworthy that he believes would keep his secret." Hiruzen ordered the boy, who nodded.

"Now..." Hiruzen began, getting Naruto's close attention.

There was a deafening silence which echoed across the room, and scraped against Naruto's ears.

"If you remember, 4 years ago, after you had recovered from your traumatizing experience, we had made a promise." Hiruzen said.

In response, the white haired boy's eyes widened in remembrance. The Hokage had promised to Naruto that if ever does end up graduating from the Academy and become a genin, he would enter into a pact with him, with a completion reward of the answers the boy seeked.

"You promised that if I became a genin, I would become closer to obtaining my answers." Naruto said.

A nod came from the old man. "You're correct. Now that you have become a genin, and after receiving a report on your abilities from Kakashi, I do believe that you are ready. Now, here is the pact, listen closely." Hiruzen told the boy, making him nod.

"The answers you seek, are the identities of your parents. In order to maintain your safety from your parent's enemies, I will be forcing you to reach a certain status as a shinobi to be certain that you will be able to defend yourself from their enemies. The first is to obtain the rank of Chunin, if you do so, I will reveal the identity of your mother." The Hokage began to explain his deal to the boy.

Widened eyes were a rare display of emotion from the rather stoic white haired pre-teen. The Hokage wanted to straight up give him the answers he seeked, as he deserved them more than anyone. But, he is first and foremost the Hokage, and he has the responsibility to keep the village's jinchuuriki safe and make sure he doesn't encounter enemies that he wouldn't be prepared for yet.

"That's not all..." the old man spoke up once again, regaining Naruto's attention.

"Once you become a Jonin, or I deem you ready beforehand, I will inform you about your father's identity." Hiruzen told the Namikaze, who was further shocked by this.

Observing the newly made genin, Hiruzen knew that the boy was not one to show his emotions publicly. If one were to look closely, you could see Naruto clenching his fists in attempt to compose himself. He eventually took a calming breath, and looked back at his leader with a straight face once more.

"Thank you, Hokage-sama. I cannot repay you in anyway for this opportunity. While I'm sure others would have not agreed with this pact, I understand that you as Hokage must have a good reason for this roundabout way of giving me my answers." Naruto said with a slight bow.

"I'm grateful that you understand, Naruto. That is all for today, you may return to your team." Hiruzen told the boy who was then prompted to leave.

- ( FLASHBACK END ) -

Returning to the Hokage office, Hiruzen sat behind his desk, observing Team 7 in front of him.

"Ah, Kakashi. I'm sure that your team has returned for another D-Rank mission." Hiruzen began.

This statement gave result of multiple varying reactions. Sakura groaned and had her head pointed downwards, depressed. Sasuke didn't show it as much, but his fist was clenched and his right eyebrow was twitching. Naruto kept himself composed, after realizing that the team needed one of them to keep the others in check if needed. While Kakashi just looked at his students with an eye-smile.

The veteran shinobi gained a sweat drop at their reactions. He suddenly caught Kakashi's serious look.

"Actually..." Kakashi said, getting his students attention.

"I believe that my team is ready. I'm here to request a C-Rank mission." Kakashi said confidently.

The bulging eyes of Sakura showed her shock. Sasuke stopped twitching and had a higher opinion of his sensei. Naruto simply sighed, and was secretly grateful to not have to deal with anymore D-Rank missions.

"Oh, is that so? Then what should it be? Currently we have a bandit problem from our neighboring supplier village. We also have-" Hiruzen planned on continuing to list out the other available missions before he was interrupted.

"Hokage-sama, we'll take the bandit mission." Kakashi spoke up.

Narrowed eyes came from the Hokage. 'I see. So he's going to get them matured before anything else, huh? He plans on making this C-Rank mission become a stepping stone for them, seeing how they will handle their first kills... Well except for Naruto...' Hiruzen finished his thought with guilt.

"Alright then. Team 7 will dispatched to a neighboring village in Hi no Kuni, one of our resource supplying villages. Once you arrive, you will meet with their village head, Hachiro-san." Hiruzen ordered them group.

"Yes, Hokage-sama." All four of them replied, and left the room.

Team 7 was now on their first C-Rank mission.

Team 7 was on their first C-Rank mission outside of the village. Sakura was excited and nervous, and of course she was just happy that she didn't have to do anymore D-Rank missions. Sasuke was eager and prepared to fight whatever he encounters. Naruto didn't show his feelings too much, but he was prepared to complete his first C-Rank mission, as he didn't want to make it a failure, as well as the fact it was the first mission out of the village.

It's been around a couple hours since the team left Konoha and are just about to arrive at the small neighboring village.

The four of them were jumping and gliding through the trees before they jumped down to the ground, and in front of them was a rather large front gate to the village they were to be assisting.

At the front, in anticipation was a man who seemed to be the leader. The group met up with the man.

"Nice to meet you, Hachiro-san." Kakashi greeted the client, as him and team 7 bow.

"Thank you for coming to assist us, Hatake-san." the man replied and returned the bow.

"No need, Konoha is happy to help. Anyway, please inform us on the situation." Kakashi requested.

"Of course. We've had trade caravans and travelers reported to be missing, or confronted by bandits that are nearby our village's outskirts and borders, most likely somewhere nearby in the forest. If you could, please help us." Hachiro pleaded his case to the jonin.

"There's no need to worry, we will immediately take care of this for you." Kakashi told the man, who bowed gratefully.

The jonin watched the man enter through his village's gates once more, before he turned back to his team, who was looking at him.

A sigh came from him, getting confusing looks from his genin. A sharp serious look from their sensei put them on edge.

"I'm not going to lie to you, I'm going to tell you guys straight up, it would be wrong to do so. There is an extremely high probability that you will either witness a kill or directly kill someone yourself on this mission. I'm hoping you don't freeze if you do so. However, don't worry as I will be watching over all three of you. Be careful, understood?" Kakashi informed his team.

The female genin of the team seemed to form a worried face at hearing the possibility of killing someone. Sasuke was also surprised, but quickly clenched his fists in resolve. Naruto wasn't as shocked as the other two, as he had already had his first kill when he was around 8 years old. But even so, Naruto still wasn't quite used to the feeling he felt after killing someone, the feeling of being hollow.

The team then began to walk into the forest, beginning to follow a trail. They continued on for a while, before Kakashi twitched, putting the three genin on guard. Seeing this, Naruto kneeled down and placed his fingers on the ground, before his eyes widened in surprise.

"How many?" Kakashi asked, already used to Naruto's sensory ability.

"I'm not sure... But this is way more than I expected. I feel that we should scout ahead beforehand." Naruto suggested.

A nod came from Kakashi. "I was thinking the same. Naruto you come with me and scout ahead, your ability to hide your presence is better than the others. Sasuke, Sakura, you two stay near the village in case there is another attack. If something happens before we return, then signal a flare, and we will return as quickly as possible." Kakashi ordered, receiving nods.

"Yosh, let's go." Kakashi said to Naruto, who nodded. The two of them then leaped off into the trees.

Recently, the sun has just set. Up in the trees, two figures were observing and watching a large group of around 100 bandits that were in a camp that was rather large in the middle of a clearing.

"This is more than I expected." Kakashi commented.

"Yes. I'm sure we could take them, but even so there's a quite a large amount of them." Naruto quietly replied.

"Probably. But there's no doubt about it now, all of you guys are going to end up killing someone tonight..." Kakashi said sadly.

The white haired genin looked over at his sensei with a contemplative look.

"Sensei?" Naruto spoke up.

"Hmm?" Kakashi questioned.

"If we are shinobi, isn't it inevitable that we are to kill? You seem to be hesitant to bring us into this situation." Naruto assumed.

A sigh came from the single eyed jonin. "You're not wrong, because no matter what happens there is no doubt that every shinobi will end up having to kill in their lifetime. I guess I just feel slightly guilty being the one to put innocent genin into a situation like this one." Kakashi told him.

"I'm... I'm not innocent..." Naruto commented quietly.

"I know. And that's why I want you to be there for the other two afterwards. As well as help them if they end up freezing up during the battle, as I might not be able to reach them. I don't have much worry for Sasuke, but Sakura on the other hand is different, keep an eye on her." Kakashi ordered him.

A nod from the young genin told him he understood.

"Remember. Those who break the shinobi rules are regarded as scum. But... Those who abandon their comrades, are even worse than scum." Kakashi recited his long lost friend, Obito's words to his student.

After hearing this, Naruto thought about it for a while, before slightly nodding.

"Alright, let's return to the others and prepare." Kakashi said, getting another nod from Naruto.

The two of them then began leaping back through the trees back to Sasuke and Sakura.

If Kakashi had looked at Naruto once more, he would have questioned if he had understood his teachings, but he didn't.

'If abandoning my comrades would make me worse than scum... Would I still be able to save a comrade if it meant I abandoned my mission which could result in a major loss to Konoha?' Naruto questioned himself, thinking back to the results and consequences of Shisui abandoning his mission. He wouldn't know the answer to that question for quite a while.

A couple hours later the team was ready. After returning to Sasuke and Sakura, they informed them of what was needed to be done. Sakura was scared but was keeping strong for the others. Sasuke was preparing the worst case scenario, so he was also resolved.

The plan was for Kakashi to use his large water style jutsu. Once the others see this, it's their signal to jump down into the confusing chaos and take out as many bandits as they could.

'I hope they're ready...' Kakashi thought as he went through hand signs.

"Suiton: Daibakufu no jutsu!" he called out loudly, expelling a large vortex of water from his masked mouth, which was projected at high speed straight through the middle of the bandit camp, making the bandits panic, in the process dozens were killed.

After getting the signal, the three genin jumped into action.

The white haired genin quickly joined the fray, and unsheathed Shisui's tanto and slashed away at the first bandit, killing him, before continuing on while clenching his fist on his tanto.

'This hollow feeling... I must ignore it.' Naruto thought and continued on.

The Uchiha quickly followed his training partner with his own tanto at the ready. He looked forward with his Sharingan and saw a bandit coming at him, resolved, Sasuke charged at him and dodged his sloppy attack and sliced through his chest and pulled the blade out. Afterwards, Sasuke looked down at his bloody blade and hand before looking back up with determination, and taking out more bandits as he went.

'I have to become stronger in order to defeat Itachi and become Hokage.' Sasuke with determination.

The female genin followed after her teammates, more hesitantly. She heard a war cry and looked over and saw three men with swords charging at her. With haste, she quickly threw multiple shuriken at the men, killing two of them, while the last one was hit but only injured. In shock of killing two men, she lost focus as her eyes widened as the last man swung his blade at her.

"DIE GIRL!" the man yelled, making her close her eyes in fear.

'This is it! I'm dead for sure!' Sakura thought in horror.

The sound of flesh getting cut was heard across the clearing.

Not feeling any pain, Sakura carefully opened her eyes and was surprised at the sight in front of her.

Her white haired teammate was in front of her with his tanto buried deep in the man's heart.

"Y-You damned..." the man attempted to say.

Not caring for the mans words, Naruto twisted his tanto and sliced upwards, out from the heart and exiting the man's left shoulder, killing him. In the process, blood was sprayed and splattered on Naruto's white hair, showing the rather big contrast in color, though it used to be his old hair color.

Watching this, Sakura just looked in shock. Naruto turned around and looked at her from the corner of his eye.

"You okay?" he asked, and received a nod. "Good. Then get it together, you're a kunoichi of Konoha, act like one." Naruto told her before leaping back into the action with Sasuke, set on completing the mission.

After hearing her teammates words, Sakura's shaking stopped.

'He's right. I can't be freezing right now, while my comrades are risking their lives.' Sakura thought before catching up to her teammates to assist them.

The next couple minutes of clearing out the bandits passed by like a blur, with all of the killing and massacre. Though the biggest lesson that the genin learned from this mission is that killing is part of being a shinobi.

Eventually, before they knew it, they cleared out the entire camp of bandits. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura met up before they saw their sensei and came up to him and saw that he was equally as much, or maybe even more bloody than them.

The one eyed jonin observed his students. Sakura was covered in less blood than the other two, but it was less noticeable in the first place due to her red outfit. Sasuke's shirt and hands were covered in blood. Naruto's shirt, face, and hair was bloodied.

'With his white hair covered on blood, he truly does look like Kushina-san.' Kakashi thought.

"Good job. I know that this isn't something that should be enjoyable, but this is our job as a shinobi. I'm proud of your resolve, especially you Sakura, you have really grown over the past couple months I've been your sensei." Kakashi told them, making Sakura form a small smile.

"Alright you three, get cleaned up. Afterwards we'll inform Hachiro-san of the situation, and head back to konoha." Kakashi told them.

The three, including Kakashi then went down to a nearby creek to clean up, before they made their way back to the nearby village to inform their client of their successful mission.

It's now the next day at sunrise. Team 7 was standing in front of the gates of the village, standing across from their client.

"I thank you, Hatake-san. Without you and your team, I bet we wouldn't have been able to last much longer." Hachiro-san told them gratefully with a bow.

"No, there's no need for that. This is important for us Konoha shinobi as well. After all, you people help supply us with resources. It's only natural that we would help an ally, which benefits us." Kakashi told the man.

"Of course, I understand. Send Hokage-sama my gratitude." Hachiro request.

A nod came from Kakashi, before himself and his team turn and make their way back to Konohagakure no sato.

A couple hours later and the entire team was at the gates of Konoha.

If one looked closely, the three genin appeared to be exhausted. It's only natural considering that just within about two days they made a trek to a nearby village, took out around 100 men, before returning to Konoha. Not to mention the mental stress from the killings.

"Alright, that's our first C-Rank mission, success." Kakashi announced to the rather quiet team.

A sigh came from Kakashi. 'I guess it might take a couple days to get back to normal, huh? I guess no C-Rank missions for a week.' Kakashi thought.

"I understand. You guys get a week off. But if you still wish to train, I'll be at training ground 7 at the usual time. Also remember this. The killings will get easier, however you will always feel something about it, whether its guilt, or sadness, but if you end up not feeling anything anymore, that's when you become a monster. Don't let that happen." Kakashi told them with a serious voice.

"Okay! That's all you're dismissed, I'll go deliver the report to Hokage-sama." Kakashi told them before flickering away.

The three genin then silently walked their different ways home, to rest.

The sound of writing stopped as the door opened, making the Hokage look up. His sight with greeted with his top shinobi, Kakashi. The man who usually had a lazy and nonchalant look to him, was now serious. Though it makes sense, considering the mission he just finished.

"Kakashi, I'm guessing the mission was a success." Hiruzen assumed.

"Yes, Hokage-sama." the jonin responded.

"Then, give me the report of how the genin handled it." Hiruzen requested, getting a nod from the jonin.

"Of course. At the beginning of the fight, Naruto was able to take the killings in stride, though I expected that from him. Though don't worry, even I was able to see the slight twitch in emotion that he attempted to hide." Kakashi began.

"Sasuke followed after Naruto, he was able to handle it fairly well. After he had killed the first bandit he hesitated slightly, before he was able to resolve himself and continued in the fight." he continued.

"With Sakura, it actually went better than I expected. She was able to use her shuriken to defeat some of the bandits, before she froze after experiencing her first kill, in result almost getting killed, if it wasn't for Naruto saving her. Afterwards, she was able to build up her courage and resolve after seeing her comrades fight as well." Kakashi finished his report.

There was silence in the room as Hiruzen thought over the report given to him, before a slight relieving smile appeared.

"It seems that our next generation of genin has some rather high potential." Hiruzen said.

An eye-smile appeared on Kakashi's face. "Yes. Hokage-sama" he said with pride evident in his voice.

AUTHOR'S NOTES:

This chapter was meant to show the more serious side of the shinobi occupancy.

I wanted to show how each genin would react to the killings.

I hoped you enjoyed.

Next Chapter will be Land of Waves.
