Chapter 6
Jon
Battle was nothing like the stories the old guards at Winterfell would tell him and Rob. Nothing like the songs sung from the bards that would grace the halls during feasts. Battle was messy, it was chaos, it was bloody hard to think in. This is where Jon currently found himself in, right above the gate with the other hunters as he fired arrow after arrow in the horde that was charging the gate house.
So far, the plan was working Rattleshirts men were trying everything to just get inside and the 20 men that were holding the gate was keeping the mass at bay. The snow steel tipped spears tore through everything the attack free folk would throw at it. If it were a wooden shield, it might as well be parchment, leather armor, you would have been better off if you were in your name day suit. It would have made treating your wounds easy. Nothing had stopped the spears once the men started to thrust them.
Overall, the men were holding fine, but Rattleshirt had not sent all his forces to attack the main gate. Jon could see him on the small hill just north of the village. There had to be 75 maybe more men still held up there with him. Jon could not really think of a reason he would not send all his forces into the fight, but it would not matter if they could just keep his men stuck at the front and the hunters and him keep hitting them with arrows, they could win this easy.
That thought immediately flew from his head as Jon heard a cry from the front gate. Moving to the back of the platform Jon could see that at least two men had been brutally killed, with one having his head smashed against the wall and other had his spear put into his guts and out his back. The man responsible for the killings was standing over the last one dripping in blood. He was huge too so Jon could not understand how they could have missed him on the wall.
Another one the spear men took a shot at the giant, but the man just grabbed the spear by the shaft and pulled the attacker to him, at the same time took his bronze sword and put it in his gut when he reached him. Jon could tell if something didn't change soon the men at the gate might break. He could already see the signs on the men at the back of the formation. He needed to do something...then without saying a word he took off his arrows and sat his bow down. Drawing his sword from his back he turned toward the front of the wall and ran straight at it.
Just before he hit it, he leaps falling at the mass of men below him. He thought he could hear someone calling for him just before he jumped, but he would have to focus for now. Just as he was about to hit a person below him, he placed his sword under him. Driving the blade through the person below in brutal fashion stunning the men that surrounded him.
Not one to let his lessons go to waste Jon quickly cut another man that was now front of him down so that he had a clear view on the mountain of a man that had been cutting the clan down. The giant had noticed the commotion be hide him and turned just in time to see Jon run at him. He was as shocked by the turn of events that he didn't even try and defend himself when Jon slide by him, that quickly changed when all a sudden the balance on one side of his body felt off. The next moment he was falling forward with no reason as to why. Then he saw just before he hit the ground his right leg had been cut off just below the knee. The next thing he felt was icy feeling on the back of his neck before it all went black, and he knew no more.
Jon slide pass the giant cutting off his leg and as the man fell cut off his head when the body was level with the ground. Then without a word he grabbed a fallen spear and shield then turned to face the clans' men. "On me lets push these fuckers out!" Jon yelled at the top of his lungs, that snapped the clans' men out of their stupor as they reformed with Jon at the point. The group then charged the mass in front of them killing anyone who got in range.
The enemy free folk were beginning to panic when Jon her more war cries from the back of the mass before him. Rattle Shirt had joined the fray, 'Good now we can close the trap.' Jon thought as he and the men besides him cut down man after man. To Jon time seemed to drag on as he put down man after man. He was not sure if he had killed them, but he knew he had done enough to them that there were out of the fight. Soon they had pushed the mass just outside the ditch when Jon heard a horn from the gate house. Then war cries filled the air as the rest of the clans' men charged from the wood line at the enemy.
If Jon had still been at the walls, he would have seen it the moment the enemy knew they had been surrounded. Many of them just threw their weapons down. Some tried to flee but were cut down by the clan if they could reach them. Bjorn had reach Rattleshirt and both men were locked into a terrifying melee. At one point in their fight, it looked as though Bjorn would lose when Rattle Shirt had disarmed him, but just before Rattleshirt could deliver the killing blow Bjorn grabbed his sword arm and broke it over his knee before taking Rattleshirts head and bringing that to his knee as well knocking the man out cold.
The battle was over after that many of the enemy free folk threw down their weapons after Rattleshirts fall. There were a few pockets of resistance, but they were crush quickly. Bjron and the others leading the flank and rear charges slowly made their way to the gate house after corralling the enemy. What greeted them was a sight threated spilt his face with the grin he had.
At the front entrance was little Jon caked in blood a spear broken inside a dead free folk to the side of him, sword and shield in hand and the rest of the men holding the gate be hide him. On top of all that Jon and the men had traveled some distance from the gate the trail of injured and dead enemy free folk trailed be hide them. He didn't know what had happen to cause the young man to take charge like this, but he plans to find out.
Just as he was going to step up to speak to the boy, a women come bowling from be hide him and strikes him in the back of his head before grabbing him and pulling him into her embrace. Bjorn recognized the women as Revna instantly, 'Might be best not to get in the way of that one... I will have Arne get the story then tell me. Yes, that seems like the safer rout.' Bjron thought to himself as he quickly retreated from the scene.
The clean up after the battle took a few days. They need to gather the dead for burning and treat the wounded. The Clan had lost 30 warriors and spear women in the defense of their home, but they had dragged at least 120 of the enemy with them into the embrace of the old gods. They managed to capture the remaining 280 enemy forces. Which had been tie up and placed in hole prison dug inside the village while the decided what to do with them. Bjorn had eventually learned what Jon had done from Arne, he wanted to hear the story from the boy himself. However, from what he had learn Revna had imprisoned the boy in their home for the next two weeks for his recklessness.
As much as he wanted to help the boy, he knew better to get on the bad side of a spear wife, and Revna was particularly vengefully if you angered her. Both men sent a quick thanks to the gods for the boy's sacrifice and went on with the day. Soon the village was back to how it was before as the Bjron, and the elders waited for many of their people to recover from the battle rewards need to be given and such.
Scouts had found the rest of Rattleshirts clan, and they were slowly moving them to the village. As it turns out Rattleshirt had planned on kill all of them and taking the village from himself to house his people. So, he moved with most of his warriors ahead of his village to prepare for their arrival. Bjron and the elders deicide to take in the new arrivals and absorb Rattleshirts clan. The ones coming were his old young women and boys and children anyway so they would not be too much trouble. His people began building more homes in perpetrations for them.
As for Rattleshirts warriors somewhere too loyal to Rattleshirt to keep alive so they were killed the ones they could keep where the young men and women who as far as Bjron could tell had be a part of the villages Rattleshirt had attacked and force to join him on his march here. Rattleshirt himself had been killed a few days ago after being question on how he even knew where to look for them.
Turns out old crow in the trees had given Rattleshirt their position in exchange for bring Jon back to the south. That clearly did not sit well with anyone, and many had called on finding the old man and putting an end to him, but Bjron had vetoed that idea. If the people, he sent out to find Mother Freyja returned soon that problem would fix itself. The Fact that the old raven even care about the boy was a bigger issue, but he had gotten word from Arne that the boy did not have plans to ask to go south anymore and only wished to send word that he was ok and would visit eventually.
So as far as Bjron was concerned the boy was clan now if the old man wanted the boy, he would have to go through the clan to get him. If this battle had shown him anything then he knew it was a battle the old man couldn't win.
One Month Later
Jon was finally free...well kind of. He was allowed to go back to the forge to work with Nell, get lessons on stitching with Eva, play with Maria and the other children. However, hunting was off the table, so was training for another moon at least. Jon didn't fight this though he knew she only acted like this because she cares about him and was scared that he could have died with his reckless actions that day. It was a nice feeling, be cared for, so Jon took his punishment in stride even smiling whenever he thought about it. Right now, him and Nell were putting the finally touches on the many new weapons they had been creating before and after the battle. Bjron had ordered them to be finished with all due haste as he planned to award some warriors for their actions in the battle.
They did put in some long night however most of the work had already been done if it had not been for the battle, they would have been finished weeks ago. After collecting the last of the weapons and placing them into the cart in front of the build Jon and Nell headed in the direction of the long house. Along the way Jon couldn't help but notice that the village had grown larger once again. With the new commers arriving about two weeks before more homes were put up. They had to tear down a section of the wall to gain more space, but the new section was coming along. The section of the village that housed the glass houses had addition two more buildings while a third was under construction.
With all the new people things the village couldn't focus on before became possible. Nell now had ten new people to train in smithing, Eva and some of the other southern women had a building built just so they could stich new clothes for everyone. Hells they even built Jeron a tower, with the condition that he would teach all the children in the village. Jon didn't know why he didn't like the gray rat, something about him just rubbed him the wrong way, it might change but Jon didn't think so.
After a few minutes, they made it to the long house. The guards outside the entrance recognized Jon and each give him a nod of respect. Not that Jon knew why that was he just nodded back as they made their way inside.
The feast had been in full swing by the time they made it. Food drinks laugher filled the space. Jon spotted the triplets Hilda, Yrsa, and Asa hanging off Tormund while he was double fisting two horns of drink. Tove was off to the side with another spear woman, both looked deep into the cups if the blush on Tove face was anything to go by. He found Arne hold Revna has they had spotted him when he and Nell entered. Revna was five or six moons with child, and it showed with how round she had gotten, but it never failed to put a smile on Jon's face to see her like that.
Jon didn't have time to spot anyone else as they made it to the upper platform where Bjorn and the elders were. Once the hall had started to quiet down Bjron started calling out some warriors and spear women one by one and handing them the snow steel weapons. Axes, spears, swords, knives, and even a shield or two Jon saw the weapons in the cart slowly dwindle down to one last item. It was in a box he didn't remember seeing it in the smith nor did he remember Nell or him placing it there.
So deep in his thoughts that Jon missed the Bjorn had call on him. Nell hit Jon to get his attention, startled Jon look around until he realized all eyes were on him. Bjron chuckled, "Now, as I was saying this young wolf jumped from the top of the wall straight into the heart of battle. From what I could gather from the men there he showed no fear and charged the enemy head on. Hell from how they talk we might not have even needed to hit them in the back with how close they were to breaking from our young wolf here." That got a round of ayes in the room. "Me and the elder figured the only way to honor the young blood was to full invite him into the clan, Jon stands before me."
Jon moved machinal up to face Bjorn his mind rushing a mile a minute. Bjron took a breath then started, "Jon do you swear by the old gods to live your live free, and to defend the lives of your brothers and sisters in the clan from now until your last breath." Jon swallowed then nodded, "Aye...I do from now until I breath my last." Bjron brought out into a smile, "Then I now welcome you into the Clan of Gaints Bane, Jon Ulfhild...Jon the Blood Wolf."
Cheers rang out in the hall as all present shouted and chanted Blood Wolf. Jon couldn't help but smile as he looked to Arne and Revna both had proud looks on their faces, and Jon knew he was home life for him could not get better than this moment.
A/N: Alright from this point the chapters are going to get longer as am not sure I will be able to write as much during my work week so it might cut my releases down to twice a week from this point or it might not who really can say. To that really long guest review thanks person but I have no idea what you are talking about with those lost post. Also there was one post about how they would have had dragon glass in the far north due to not having a volcano, I see your post and raise you dragon stone. In the books its describe as a forest on a cliff next to the ocean and at no point was there a volcano on Westeros, so really I can put dragon glass where I want it to be.
