When they crossed the top of the mountain Daryl woke up fully. He was not happy about having been shot and groaned loudly. Carol was flustered and trying her best to comfort him but he just swatted her hands away. She was aware he wasn't likely use to a woman helping him and it almost made her smile.
"Where are we?" Daryl questioned.
"Almost there, son." Dana said.
Carol nodded to him and he relaxed partially into his seat. When Carol kept swiping at the blood he shot her a disgruntled look. He tried to swat her hand away again but it didn't work. SHe slapped back at his hand and he growled. Dana laughed up front but both ignored her.
"Let me clean you up before Logan sees this and freaks out!" Carol snapped.
Daryl laid back and Carol huffed. She wet a rag and swiped away more of the blood and he sighed. Carol looked up meeting his eyes. He was watching her intently but his eyes showed pain. He was quiet for a minute before his eyes flicked forward to her grandmother. His lips pursed before he just looked away.
When they got to the foot of the mountain Daryl was cleaned up and looking better. He was pale though. Carol directed her grandmother to the gates and Glenn opened them recognizing the truck. When he didn't see Daryl she saw his gun appear.
Rolling down the back window showed them both and Glenn's brows shot skyward. That was until he noticed the blood on Daryl. He waved them through. Merle was there and Carol told her grandmother to park there.
The door was jerked open before Carol had a chance to process someone was even there. A man who was a dead ringer himself for Daryl made her eyes widen. He ripped away the seatbelt.
"What the fuck happened!" He snarled. "Are you bit?"
"No." Daryl's voice was dry. "Just shot."
He pulled Daryl from the vehicle. Merle and him both caught him and he staggered slightly. He leaned heavily into them. The brother she'd not met hugged him tightly.
"A twin." Dana said. "Better use condoms or you'll be spitting out a pair."
Carol hissed at her and climbed out. Logan was there now and they were all looking at Daryl's wound. Merle was stripping him of his shirt and Carol's eyes widened at the scars that decorated Daryl's back.
"We'll get this cleaned up and you'll be okay." Merle's voice was steady.
Carol hopped out and Dana did too. "This must be your grandmother." Logan's voice was brittle. "Nice to meet you."
"My name is Dana." She smiled and nodded to the rest of the gathered group.
The brothers were ushering Daryl into a building that was close to the gate. Carol realized it was the medical building. She wanted to follow. Something in her was sick at the thought of not being there while he was checked over. Instead she was met with Maggie's wide eyes and her grandmothers knowing ones.
"You brought back quite the haul." Maggie's voice shook. "What happened out there?"
"We were followed from some point to my grandmothers, Dana's, and there was more than we thought of the men. Daryl stepped outside first and was unlucky."
Maggie nodded and they talked over the trip a bit more before they split up. She knew Daryl was home by now from seeing Logan trot away towards their house. She didn't know if she should go to check on him or not.
In the end she decided she would check on him in the morning. She showed her grandmother the way to the house and was glad to be back inside. She'd felt exposed when they got back and she wanted to rest. Just sleep on it.
When she walked by Daryl's house the man from before was there. He stood on the porch watching them both with eyes of a predator. Everything in her screamed danger but she kept her pace even. Her grandmother was completely unaffected. Instead she met his gaze evenly.
"Is he okay?" Dana asked.
"Yes."
She nodded and kept walking. Carol gaped at her and followed. When they got inside she knew that her grandmother wasn't in the mood to talk. She'd been stripped of the things she'd brought with her. All the preserved food was added to the town pantry and it infuriated her. She worked hard for that and they just took it. Said it was only fair to distribute and it happened to everyone. Personally Carol felt it was bullshit.
