Chapter 18: The Lone Wolf

Meanwhile, deep underwater around the Royal Navy's command ship.

A shadow who wears a dark helmet approaches the button of the command ship. Normally she does not need to wear a helmet to dive but it spreads anti-detection signals that hide her presence. As she gets close enough to the Royal Navy's command ship, she climbs through the hull and reaches a hallway undetected.

The Kansen takes off her helmet and puts it away.

"Wolf here, infiltration success. I will stop my contact, for now, my next contact will be the end of the operation," recorded U-47, also known as the Lone Wolf.

She has two primary objectives: Investigate who is the Royal Navy's commander and rescue Roon if possible.

Bismarck generously provided her with the dark helmet for anti-detection and the same kind of pseudo-stone that Roon is wearing. This stone glows when another is nearby so she only needs to follow the direction that the stone shines the brightest.

U-47 changes her diving suit to a dark mobile suit for her infiltration. She cannot use her rigging on land so she has a P-38 and a knife in case she is exposed. Her rigging can transform into a small shark face backpack so she actually can carry many items.

Although the shape of her shark backpack embarrasses her.

The command ship is around the size of a light cruiser except it only has an AA gun. As she moves to different areas, all lifeforms she can see so far are different kinds of Manjuus: nurse, engineer, worker, janitor. No humans or Kansens she has found so far.

As she sneakily moves to a different hallway, she notices a room in a corner that has two Manjuu standing like bodyguards, as if something important is inside. These Manjuus wear a dark blue helmet and hold a black stick.

The stone she holds also shines like a flashlight. It seems this guarded room might have what she needs.

Breaking through those Manjuus should be quite easy but they may cause noises that alert other Manjuus. What should she do?

According to a worldwide popular party game named, "Unter uns," hallways with rooms usually need air vents that connect.

Without alerting the Manjuus, she silently goes into a room next to the guarded room. This room is filled with boxes so it is difficult to see if there is an air vent. If there is one, it is usually placed around the room's inner corners. She squeezes through the boxes and sees a square iron plate with holes attached to the wall in a corner.

"Glücklich," said U-47 in her mind. She must be lucky today.

U-47 crawls through the air vent and enters the room where Roon is being held. She sees Roon silently lying on a bed. Roon's eyes are open but she blinks them. U-47 slowly approaches her but Roon shows no signs of movement.

"So this is the side effect of a pseudo-stone," pitied U-47. Roon still does not showing any response even when U-47 waves her hands to the front of Roon's sights.

"Oh no, don't tell me…," panicked U-47

U-47 touches Roon's wrist to check her pulse. She can feel Roon's slow beating pulse.

Thank goodness Roon is still alive, U-47 thinks. Then again, what is the difference between alive or dead for this unconscious Kansen?

She tries to carry Roon up. However, Roon cannot even stand since she is unconscious. This means that U-47 must physically carry someone heavier than her, a mission impossible.

She keeps trying to pull Roon up. Perhaps she pulls in the wrong direction, instead of being lifted, Roon rolls toward U-47 and falls off her bed. A strong bumping sound alerted the Manjuu guards.

"Crap."

The two Manjuu guards open the door since they heard something drop. They see someone who definitely is not a member of the Royal Navy.

One of them dashes to a nearby fire alarm and pulls the lever.

The warning sound of the fire alarm instantly spread through the entire ship. Everyone ceases their current action and starts running to their pre-assigned positions for evacuation.

U-47 quickly dashed through the Manjuus and ignored them. She needs to escape as soon as possible.

As she turns right to a hallway, she hears a gunshot and a bullet flies through her right shoulder, leaving a thin line of scratch.

"End of the line," said Sheffield with pistols in her hands. "I take it you're an Ironblood Kansen."

"Commander, I have come to escort you," greeted Belfast.

Belfast helps Arthur to quickly take off the borrowed admiral uniform jacket, wears the military uniform and the bulletproof vest. Since they cannot know what exactly happens when an intruder breaks into the ship. Arthur needs to be combat-ready in case he is the target.

Arthur grabs his revolver and knife and puts them in his holsters.

As they are about to leave the office, a Manjuu rushes in and reports the situation.

Sheffield is currently engaged with the enemy intruder. So far the Manjuus only saw one unit but more can be waiting or hiding somewhere.

The Manjuu leads Arthur and Belfast to Sheffield's position.

Sheffield has been dueling against U-47. Sheffield's gunshots followed by melee attacks give U-47 no room to take break from constant blocking, dodging, and deflecting. It is clear to everyone that Sheffield takes the advantage and she still has more than enough stamina to continue.

Arthur thinks for a moment. Maybe he can use U-47 to stop Iron Blood's attack.

"Stop, both of you," ordered Arthur. "Any further resistance won't yield you the chance to escape," he continues.

Sheffield immediately ceases her actions and takes a short distance away.

U-47 breathes heavily. She clearly has nearly exhausted all of her stamina.

Arthur orders both of the royal maids to search U-47 to see whether she has stolen anything. All they find are a dark helmet and a purple stone. It seems she did not steal any important item or document.

"If you work for Iron Blood, I have a proposal for you," said Arthur. "You can safely leave this ship if you tell your commander to stop the attack. Leave the Royal Navy alone or I will bring an end to his life."

U-47 has no choice but to comply.

"Are you sure to let her go? What if she doesn't tell her commander your message?" asked Belfast.

"Whether she tells as I said or not is not important. I want to let their commander know that this fight is pointless. Well, pointless for us anyway. Move the prisoner to a different room. Tell Hood to sortie as planned. It's about time to finish this."
