Chapter Fourteen

I Am The Daycare Attendant

Sun buzzed in his place as he heard footsteps. Briana had not visited them for a week. Every day they were brought back to the Superstar Daycare. In fact, the last time they entered, the lady said she would not see them tomorrow. Or ever.

The door opened.

John and Dennis entered.

John stopped in front of Sun. "Sun," he stated.

Sun's mirth died. Why… was John not happy? Did they do something?

John sighed with a short chuckle and his smile returned. "Sorry, sorry. Sun. We're going back to the Daycare, okay? But first, I need to check on you. I…. I'm not going to lie. I'm going to make some modifications. Right now, you are programmed to stay here unless brought out. I need to reprogram you so that the Superstar Daycare becomes your 'Square One', so to say. If you ever get lost, you will automatically return to the Daycare. And during the day and night, you will stay in the Superstar Daycare unless someone brings you out, a child is in danger, or it is time for Moon to patrol. I will also need to give you both access to the main network. Do you both understand that?"

Sun nodded. Moon agreed, but for some reason he did not share Sun's enthusiasm.

What was happening? Did Sun miss something?

"Okay." John looked around. "Now, I want you to bring me everything that you want to keep. Like your Bonnie plush, if you want to keep that. I want you to put it right here." He pointed to the ground between them. "Okay? It can be anything you want. Just know that you will never be coming back to this room. Anything in this room is fair game, except for the camera, obviously." He chuckled at his own joke, as did Dennis. "Take your time, okay? This is important. You will be provided with everything you need, so you don't need to include that if you don't want to."

Sun nodded. "Okay! Okay. Yeah, important. Will do."

Sun got up and brought Bonnie and the book to the spot. Moon was not much help. He wanted the blue car that rolled on its own, but that was it. Sun picked up a few of the plush toys so that he had the whole band and Monty.

Once he had gathered up everything, he sat back down at his spot. "Is this okay?"

"Yes." John stood up straight. "That is perfect. Hold on." He walked behind Sun. "Congratulations, by the way. You're officially the new Daycare Attendant."

"Yes! Thank you so much!"

"Heh! I won't be able to visit you much, remember that. I'm head engineer. You'll probably see Dennis more than I. So, goodbye."

Sun hesitated. "Good… bye? Are you leaving?"

"No. No don't worry about it. Sorry if I scared you. Heh. Just been one of those days."

Sun shut down.

They were in their room.

Sun powered on and looked around his mostly plain surroundings. This was his room. A small pile of toys and a book of children's stories lay on the ground.

He looked up to see two engineers. Weirdly, one held onto a rabbit plush. Bonnie, correct?

"I believe so. He is the bass player in the band."

"Good morning!" the brunette greeted. "Or, should I say, night? It's pretty late."

"Yep! It's 10:32 PM!" Sun answered, reading aloud his internal clock. He knew it must be correct as he was connected to the main network and the main network had a clock on it, too.

"Now, it'll get dark every five minutes before the hour starting after midnight and ending at six, at which point it will stay dark for ten minutes. Moon, during that time, you will be patrolling the building for intruders, aggressive animatronics, and lost children. For the rest of that time, just keep the Daycare tidy and ready for the kids come morning."

Sun nodded. "Okay! Thank you! We'll get to work, definitely. Um… just… a question, though."

"Yes?"

"Why don't I have any children or families in the database, yet?"

"You'll receive them once the children are entered into the system," the brunette explained. "You probably have some IDs, though. You must recognize staff."

"Yes," Sun answered. John Remington, Head Engineer, male, he/him, 35 years old. He glanced at the second man. Dennis Harvey, Engineer, male, he/him, 30 years old. "Mr. John Remington and Mr. Dennis Harvey?"

"Correct!" The brunette, John, answered with a smile. "You should recognize the security staff that will be taking shifts in the Daycare. You aren't allowed behind the desk unless a staff member tells you to go there. Remember that."

"Definitely. We aren't allowed behind the desk unless told to."

"Correct! Now. The Superstar Daycare opens in a few hours." He held out the Bonnie plush. "You have fun and do well."

Sun cocked his head but took the Bonnie plush. "What… do I need to do with this?"

For the slightest moment, John looked surprised. Was Sun supposed to know what to do with it? Then he looked… sad, almost. "Oh. Well, whatever you want with it. You can keep it here if you want. Or down with the other toys. But there are plenty of toys for everyone, even if a few break."

Suddenly, John said, "You have the option of a plush toy, a doll, and a toy machine. My child, Mary, prefers the Freddy plushie. Her friend, Raven, prefers the Roxy doll. If Mary wanted a toy, which of these would you give her?"

Sun answered, "The Freddy plushie."

"Correct. What about Elizabeth?"

"I would ask what toy Elizabeth wanted and suggest one depending on her answer."

John laughed and bowed his head. "So, you finally got that one. Alright." He straightened himself up.

"I did. Are you surprised? You programmed me."

What was going on?

"I did, I did. Good evening, Sun, Moon. I expect to hear good reports from the two of you." With that, John and Dennis started to leave.

Poor guy looks so sad. What happened? Was it something I said?

"I am unsure."

A thought occurred to him. "John?" Sun called.

The two stopped in the doorway and looked back. John barely answered, "Yes?"

"I am sorry. But you do not look well. Did I not remember correctly?"

"…no, you did. You did perfectly, just as intended." John smiled at him. "Exactly as they intended."

Then, they were gone.

I like him.

"I do, too."

Why?

"I am unsure."

Sun looked at the toy. He ran a finger over it. There was something about this doll… something happy… something scary and sad. Although he knew it should go in with the other toys in the Daycare, something compelled him to set it down beside the others in their room.

Sun got to his feet and hopped onto the raised platform. He strutted out onto the stage overlooking the Superstar Daycare.

Day One.
