"Who?"

Carlisle Cullen was surprised momentarily with the quiet question. He was beside Isabella in the hospital, where she was taken after she passed out in gym class. It was the first time he looked at her medical records, which filled him with rage. How could she let her become this bad? How could Charlie let her? She had friends before, Angela, Mike, Jessica. How could they let her become this bad? In a moment of rage, he burst through her door and sent Edward away.

"How could you let this happen Bella?" She could hear the anger and disappointment in his voice. "Do you know that your heart and kidneys are about to fail? Are you aware that your lab results are so bad that we must keep you here for months if we want to fix it all? WHY DIDN'T YOU TALK TO SOMEBODY?!" His voice got higher and higher while he listed his questions without letting her speak.

"Who?"

"What do you mean who? There are lots of professionals here and even in your sch-"

"What would I tell them Carlisle?" He didn't like the way she spoke. Like telling a young child a very simple and obvious fact. "How could I speak while keeping your secret? How could I sell you and your family like that?" He didn't like the way she emphasized your. "And let's just imagine for a second that I was truthful to a psychiatrist, can't you see that they'd have put me to an institution for believing in vampires?"

She took a deep breath, his eyes automatically swiped over the screens, checking her vitals.

"And no, I did not know all that. But I know that it hurts to wake up, it hurts to eat, it hurts to puke, it hurts to sleep, it hurts to breathe. I don't know how to fill this gaping hole in my chest. Why don't you tell me how?"

Her words were spoken with such hopelessness, he didn't know what to do. He didn't know how to answer. This girl, his daughter in every way that counts, was like this because she kept their protection over her health. She had every reason to go and tell the world all their dirty secrets. Instead, she protected them, she protected their secrets with all she had.

And there wasn't much left of her. He didn't know how to fill the hole in her chest because he didn't know how to fill the one in his either.

AN: So we're picking up the speed a little bit. Until now, I tried to give a clear picture of what I had in mind about Bella's mental state and the general situation. From now on I'll be jumping further in time. I think we have around 10 chapters left until the end but we'll see.
