Deceiving Appearances
Chapter One
The scenery passed through the window Kagome looked out from her seat on the train, the Child Service worker sitting across from her. The train they were on was on its way to Central, for her to be transferred from Eastern Child Services to there.
'Like I need to have Child Services to look after me... then again, that's what I get for being in this form most of the time...' Kagome thought as she looked at her reflection through the window.
Her face was child-like and still held some of its baby fat- it being so from when she was a ten, eleven-year-old kid. Her eyes were the same blue she remembered, if not a little lighter in color and had less inner light but not noticeably so. Her hair was the same raven color, but retained its length passed the small of her back and was loose. Not to mention she was much shorter, maybe about a couple inches under four feet; a bit under the average height of a pre-teen. Even from where she was sitting, her feet couldn't reach the ground.
This simple fact made Kagome frown a little but didn't let it bother her; the body she was in now wasn't permanent – it was just a method to preserve and keep her energy in check.
"Don't worry, Kagome. We'll be in Central in no time now... and you'll be able to see your uncle." The woman sitting across from her, the Child Services worker said, like she was trying to lighten the mood.
'Or try getting me to talk again...' Kagome thought as she glanced at the older woman from the corner of her eye and nodded before looking out the window again.
Ever since her family's death, Kagome somehow lost her ability to speak. Doctors had said it was a psychological thing due to the trauma of losing her family so suddenly. And it was... it was proven when Kagome tried her hardest to speak again. But they said that she would heal with time... or if she was in the presence of family other than her deceased family.
Kagome remembered having an uncle who was her father's older brother but she never had the chance to meet him since she was a baby. And since he was in the State military in Central, her father and he were hardly able to visit with each other; Kagome never knew what he was like or even what he looked like.
The little miko heard the woman sigh again, a sign that she was giving up on trying to get to talking.
The sounds of footsteps running caught her attention as the stopped and heard a man say, "He's right! There is someone with him... and he is small."
Then came an offended and P.O-ed yell, "Who are you calling 'a runt so tiny that he can only be seen with a magnifying glass', you jerk?!"
This caused Kagome to look up and see a blond boy with golden eyes who looked ready to kill as he stared at a middle-aged man with black and white hair. The older man tried to get him to calm down, saying that he was only repeating what someone else had said the part about him being small before two men with shades and guns stood and aimed at the man.
The grey and black haired man had seen one of them standing with the gun ready to aim but it was no use since it was two against one.
Everything was at a pause before the older man put away his gun. Once he did, the man behind him had hit him in the back of the head with the butt of the gun.
The man fell unconscious before the two holding the weapon ordered everyone on the train to put there hands in the air, threatening that if they didn't, they wouldn't hesitate to shoot them dead.
Everyone did as they were told before the men started to tie up the man they had hit and started checking everyone on the cart for weapons. From where she was sitting, Kagome then saw them walking toward the small boy and his armored companion with their guns still out.
When one of the guys demanded for the blonde's companion to take his helmet off, the blonde boy told the guys to look behind them. And when they did, he took this chance to knee one of them in the face while the armored one just hit the other in the head, rendering them unconscious.
Kagome admire their quick work as they savored their small victory. But that was cut a lot shorter when one of the passengers complained, "You dumb kid, what are we supposed to do now?" she and the boys turned their attention to the man who spoke before he continued, "don't you think they'll notice when two of their men have gone missing? And what's going to happen to us then? They'll want retribution."
Another man then added, "Yeah, we would've been fine if we just cooperated until we got to Central." A couple more people voiced their agreements, making Kagome furrow her brows. 'Who says that we'd be fine once we get to Central? They could just kill us off once the train stops at the station.'
While the blond boy and his companion tried to figure out what to do next, Kagome noticed one of the men on the floor started to get up and pointed his gun toward the little girl who was sitting in the seat behind where the boy was sitting before.
Reaching for her small concealed dagger that was sheathed in her necklace pendant, Kagome quickly took aim threw the tiny blade into the man's hand, making him drop his gun in pain before the one in armor stomped on him.
Ed then picked up the gun, asking the little girl and her mother if they were okay. Once he was sure that they were okay, he noticed the piece of metal embedded in the man's hand. He wondered where it came from but was given his answer when a girl, probably a year or two younger than him got up and made her way to the man lying on the ground and taking the sharp metal out of his hand.
"Wow, nice aim," Ed muttered before the girl turned to him.
The girl didn't say anything but gave a smirk in thanks before wiping her tiny dagger from blood using the culprit's blazer.
As she was putting her dagger back in its sheath on her necklace, Ed took in her appearance as a woman professionally dressed came up to her.
The girl, Kagome, if he heard the woman right, wore a long-sleeved, if slightly tattered, light blue shirt that stopped just above her navel that was covered but some sort of black spandex material and baggy black pants that covered her shoes. And some sort of cloth and string held up her long hair while her bangs framed her face, almost covering her dark sapphire blue eyes.
'And she's shorter than me...' he thought with slight glee at the few inches he had on her.
Ed then turned to the rest of the passengers in the cart before turning to the little girl who was clinging to her mother, "Sorry about that. Your big brothers will take care of this somehow, okay?"
After the girl nodded, Kagome saw that the boys were about to take off. But, they were stopped when they heard someone from the front of the cart "Wait! Over here!" Then from one of the seats up front, the man from earlier started awkwardly crawling out.
Slipping out of the Child Service worker's hold, Kagome quickly made her way to the tied-up man with the boy and his companion behind her. With the boy's help, she had the man sitting up before the boy tried getting the ropes untied. She then brought out her concealed necklace dagger once again and handed it to the boy.
Ed took it with his thanks and started to cut the ropes with Kagome holding the man upright. As Ed was cutting the ropes the man spoke, "How embarrassing... Who are you, guys? Freelancers?"
"Nope, just two old-fashioned alchemists."
The man just smiled, "You don't say. Well, I'm Falman; State Warrant Officer."
'Falman...?' Kagome thought, feeling that the name sounded familiar to her somehow as Ed spoke, "A soldier, huh? You don't look like one."
Falman chuckled at Ed's reply, "Yeah, well, there's a reason for that. We've got a special passenger on board. You know... the front car kind."
'A superior officer...?' Kagome thought as Ed stated after finishing up cutting Falman's bonds, "So that's why these thugs are here."
With Falman's nod, Ed then gave Kagome's small dagger back as he added, "And they decided to drag us down with them." The thought also angered Kagome when hearing that the people taking over the train were involving innocent people, especially when children are also involved.
