You're Not My God
Prologue
One Chapter Closes, Another Begins
Some ways away from where a dark-haired maiden with otherworldly blue eyes stood, sounds of celebration could be heard as she continued her trek through Inuyasha's Forest and to the Goshinboku, dressed in the robes of a priestess since they were the only other set of clothes available to her that weren't torn from the last with their former enemy.
Her attention then turned to the jewel that rested over her heart as it gave a soft glow. She could feel its power gently mingled into her soul; its power converting into her own. It was a mystery that not even Sango or Sesshoumaru understood but didn't consider impossible.
Ever since Naraku's defeat and the jewel's completion and was back within her care for about three days now, Kagome noticed how the jewel started to feel similar to her, as if it was becoming an extension of herself. This became even more so after Kikyo relinquished her clay body and her part of Kagome's soul returned to the younger priestess.
It was all very strange... and it was a shock to even her friends and Kouga who had grown to know how the jewel's power felt after having pieces from it embedded in his legs for so long.
Once she reached the clearing that the Goshinboku stood in, a misty figure appeared dressed in priestess garb similar to her but also dressed in armor similar to that of a Samurai's but not as extensive as the soldiers of daimyos.
Taking in the woman's appearance and remembering the woman that took form on the stalagmite that stood within the cave in Sango's village, Kagome instantly knew who this woman was.
"Midoriko-sama."
The misty figure of the ancient miko smiled at her successor. She was aware of the changes within the jewel considering the demons she had fought against for so long were slowly but steadily disappearing and the atmosphere within the jewel was also changing from feeling like her presence to that of the priestess before her.
Midoriko knew that this was a sign that she had waited centuries for and was almost in silent awed disbelief that it had finally come. With the jewel converting its power to that of Kagome's and destroying the demons within, it meant that the ancient miko was closer to being set free from the physical form she had trapped her soul in at the beginning.
And while it was good news for the elder miko, it also meant some pretty bad news for Kagome as well. And what Kagome stated next was proof enough for Midoriko to know that Kagome had a hunch that something was going on.
"I have a feeling the reason you showed your self has something to do with why the jewel's power is starting to change... and feel similar to me..."
The armored miko smiled at her successor's sharpness before answering, "You have nothing to worry, Kagome. What you are feeling from the jewel is just its change from an object that can be easily influenced by evil to being an extension of yourself. When you had purified Naraku, you had started to unknowing purify the demons inside the jewel; helping me win and setting me free. This became even more apparent after regain the rest of your soul from Kikyo. And now that the jewel's almost completely purified, it's turning into a shell that can not only house some of you power as a backup but also medium to help extend some control for that power."
Seeing Kagome curious and confused face, she clarified, "What I'm trying to say, Kagome, is that the jewel is becoming a part of you and you a part of it; you are becoming one with it."
"Are you saying that... my soul is going to be trapped within it now that you're free?"
Midoriko shook her head at Kagome's apprehension before giving a gentle smile, "What the jewel is essentially doing is converting its power into your own so that no matter how much evil it comes into contact with, it will not be influenced and be used for said evil. It's becoming a true sacred object in every essence and allowing itself to become tied to you and your bloodline." At Kagome's relief and understanding, she was almost hesitant to tell the younger woman that downside of the entire ordeal, "but sadly... there is a shortcoming that comes with this conversion of power."
Kagome felt herself grow nervous of what's to come before asking, "And what exactly is the shortcoming?"
"The shortcoming is... that although the jewel's power is changing into yours while storing that power as a sort of backup, it's still going to be acting as a beacon for those who desire power. That's the only thing the jewel isn't changing about itself and with it, I know for certain that your will be in constant danger unless you work to find a way to hide it from those that are evil."
"So aside from me basically becoming more desirable than before, the jewel's still going to be used for wishes and such?" Kagome asked almost incredulous.
'Why in the hell can't the thing disappear and just allow Midoriko-sama to rest in peace?!'
Said ancient female just laughed softly before sparing some good news, "No, my dear. Since the jewel is becoming an extension of you with no demons inside to be so easily influence, it cannot grant any desires for anyone or even grant power for anyone or anything without getting purified. But, since you are human they will try to influence you to use your power for their desires."
The modern priestess allowed this all to sink in before repeating everything in askance to make sure she understood what was going on, "So... the jewel's power is basically being nullified and changing to become mine and act as a storage unit for a slight more power whenever I need more if I should run out of what's available to me. It can't be touched or handled by anyone with even an inkling of taint in them unless they're itching to be burned. But, it's somehow allowing my own power to seep out and catch the attention of anyone or anything that may want to use me and my power for their own selfish desires... and that can be done should they succeed in influencing me since I still have human emotions and such, unlike the jewel by itself?"
Once she was done Midoriko gave a smile and nodded, "Yes, pretty much so. And it's the reason why I appear before you now; to tell you all of that and to also request that you be careful for when you have no choice but to return home. Because although your world may appear peaceful and without it's share of the supernatural, all is not what it seems within the human plain."

Midoriko's last words to Kagome from almost a year ago still echoed in her mind, even today as her nineteenth birthday drew near – currently about four years after her trips to the past started and soon ended after becoming eighteen.
Like the ancient priestess had said – the modern miko really had no choice in returning home. A couple months after she was met with Midorkio and Kagome was staying to help a pregnant Sango out in anything she needed, Inuyasha had asked her to meet him at the Bone-Eater's Well only for him to push her into the well without a word. He didn't even look at her with remorse as she fell! And soon after she reappeared in her time, Kagome instantly felt the well's magic disappear and instantly knew that she would never be able to go back even if she tried in vain to dig into the well until her fingers bled.
Almost instantly, realization hit her and she can to the conclusion that she would never be able to see her friends again. She wouldn't be able to meet Sango and Miroku's first child who was going to be her godchild. She wouldn't even be able to be there for her Kitsune son as he grew into his demon adolescence at least, including little Rin. And most of all, she would never be able to see Inuyasha.
At the thought of the hanyou, betrayal had hit Kagome hard as she didn't understand why he pushed her into the well the first place.
Did he realize that the well was losing its magic and the portal connecting to her world was closing? Did he not want her in the Sengoku era anymore? Did he still see her as Kikyo's copy and didn't want to ever see her again?
These questions also swirled through her mind as she tried to understand why Inuyasha did what he did but ended up with no answers and just more confusion and heartache from the betrayal.
Kagome gave a tired sigh before shaking her head to dispel her last memories of Inuyasha and his betrayal. Today her friends, Eri, Yuka and Ayumi, along with Hojo wanted to meet with her today about something. She didn't know why or what for but she greatly hoped that it wasn't for a date with the aforementioned boy who hadn't given up on try to win her affections after four years of dates being cut short or refused.
It was also during those four years that Hojo's gifts improved, if only a little, from dried herbs and remedies to actual flowers and cute but still practical charms that wish her good health. Again, slight improvement on gifts... but his persistence really hadn't changed that much even after hearing about the modernized and heavily edited story of how Inuyasha betrayed her.
What she had told Hojo and her friends was that he just packed up his belongings and left the country without so much as a word about his reasons in doing so or even telling her before hand, except for a letter that said he was leaving the country for greater opportunities and never coming back.
This story was enough to make Kagome's friends the most angry she had ever seen them – even Ayumi looked like a demon child of the darkest deity you could name in the world!
But sadly, it the story she fed them also made the girls more determined to either get her together with Hojo or even find her a proper man to match her up with. The later feat being something her mother also decided to get involved in but in a more discreet manner while adding the miko's name to a Matchmaking Agency's list soon after said miko had graduated high school and started her Prep courses for her History and Mythology courses she was suppose to be starting in winter.
With another sigh, Kagome save her spot in her favorite book before closing it shut and standing from her desk to pick up her bag which was basically a much smaller and dark jean version of her old trusty yellow backpack. After exiting her room and heading downstairs, she entered the Kitchen where her mother was doing some last touchups for Souta's cake that was for him and his team's recent victory in soccer.
"Hey Mom," Kagome called for the older woman's attention before notifying, "The girls wanted to me to meet with them about something so I'm gonna head out and see what they want but I'll be back in time for Souta's Victory Party, if some odd minutes late. Just thought I'd let you know so you won't worry."
"Alright, dear. Just be careful out there." Nodoka smiled softly. The smile grew more when she heard her daughter call back as she made her way to the door, "Always careful, Mama!" and was out of the house before the older woman continued to work on the last of the cake's touchups.
