Fic Note: This will take place a little bit after Ryoma meets Sakuno. I'm re-watching the entire series since it's been so long since I had seen it and can't remember the last episode I had watched.

Summary: After coming home with the victory of defeating Naraku, Kagome was hospitalized after being involved in a car accident that killed her mother, grandfather, and younger brother. Although she survived, her eyes were damaged after getting glass in them and the doctors say she'll be permanently blind for the rest of her life unless she undergoes a cornia transplant. Refusing the surgery and being released from the hospital, Kagome starts to live with her father and his family soon, after they moved back to Japan from America, to finish school with her now only brother younger brother, Ryoma. How will things go for Kagome's new life? Will she be able to live a remotely normal life? And what's this about Nanjiro teaching her tennis despite her handicap?

Tennis at a New Level

Chapter One

Ryoma was practicing tennis on the temple's court on the property when he heard footsteps heading his way. Glancing at the corner of his eye, he saw a familiar raven-haired girl take a seat on the bench that was set under a Sakura tree. Wrapping up his practice, he went to take a seat next to the girl, "Konnichi-wa, Né-san."

"Konnichi-wa, Ryoma. How was the tournament at the Kakinokizaka Tennis Garden? Did you win?" The girl next to him asked softly with her head turned to him but not really looking at him.

"No... I was disqualified after being five minutes late. I got the wrong directions. And the girl who gave them tried her best to apologize by getting me a drink from one of the vending machines but she didn't bring any change with her so I had to pay for the drinks." Ryoma received a chuckle from the girl next to him before asking her, "So how was your day? Did Oyaji try to teach you tennis again, despite your handicap?"

A smile crept on the girl's face before answering, "I just completed his training today while you were gone. I was even able to play a couple matches with him with so few mistakes. With what he's taught me combined with my ability to fight without my eyes, I'll be able to play tennis even though I'm blind."

"Hmm... scary."

The raven-haired girl laughed, bringing a light smile to Ryoma's face. He loved it when he was able to see her smile and laugh compared to when she was still in the hospital.

The girl next to him was his older half-sister, Higurashi Echizen Kagome. Even though they had different mothers, they were pretty close while growing up and his brother, Ryoga was still around. They adored her with every fiber of there being. Hell, when she heard that Ryoga disappeared somewhere, she was so heartbroken that he didn't tell her anything. She had cried for two days straight during the summer she was staying with them to spend time with Nanjiro.

But recently Kagome and her family got caught in a car accident that killed her mother, grandfather, and her brother Souta on impact. She was the only one who survived with some fractured ribs, a fractured leg, some bruises, and some bits of broken glass getting caught in her eyes, damaging the corneas and making her blind.

The doctors say that she could be able to see again if she underwent a cornea transplant for both eyes... but because Kagome knew how expensive the procedure was and not wanting to burden their dad about the medical bills, Kagome refused the surgery and decided to live with being blind, most likely for the rest of her life.

After moving in with them, Nanjiro decided to take it upon himself to at least try and teach her a little bit about tennis. Once finding out that Kagome could move around freely without a stick or anything without her eyes, it gave Nanjiro more hope that teaching Kagome tennis was more possible.

Despite the lessons in giving something to occupy herself with, Kagome was depressed about losing her family. Both father and son tried their best to cheer her up but found it best just to be there for her when she needed them. Even Nanjiro's wife- Ryoma's mother, Rinko did her best to help the miko out of her depression by taking her shopping to taking her with her to see friends.

After a few weeks, Kagome started smiling again. And although they weren't smiles that reached her eyes, they were better than seeing her sad face and tears.

And with her being blind now, it strengthened the bond Kagome and Ryoma shared with the two spending a lot of time together.

With a smirk on his face, Ryoma stood and asked, "Wanna play one game before we head inside? I wanna see how you'll do."

Turning to her brother's direction, Kagome smiled, "Why not? We still have time before supper." And with that, both siblings walked onto the court and started to play with Kagome serving the first ball.

Time passed quickly with the score being 3-2 and Ryoma leading. Although, despite the score, the younger Echizen was impressed that his older sister had such potential brought to the surface and she was playing like she had never lost her eyesight. 'Maybe... Kagome will like to join the tennis club with me...' he thought before his cousin, Nanako called out to them announcing that dinner was ready.

"Thanks, Nanako-san. What are we having tonight?" Kagome asked as Ryoma walked up to her and rested one of her hands on his shoulder. Ever since Ryoma was told the news about his sister becoming blind, he decided to do whatever he could to help her get around without having the need for a walking stick or an eye-seeing dog, despite that she could do so without.

Nanako smiled at the siblings, "Aunt Rinko decided to make your favorite. We're having Oden with a side of steamed rice and a little miso soup."

Ryoma smirked when he saw his sister's unseeing eyes glow with happiness in being able to eat her favorite dish and led her inside the house.

Nanjirou greeted his kids after putting away his swimsuit model magazine, "So how did everything go? The two of you played tennis before coming in?" He was saddened that his ex-wife was gone, but he was happy that his daughter was alive. He could look past the fact that she lost her eyesight. Her being able to live with him was all that mattered, especially when his son was so close to her.

Kagome smiled before answering, "Yeah, Ryoma and I played a match of tennis. It was pretty fun... although, I think otouto was going a little easy on me." She looked straight at her brother, who was sitting across from her, with blank unseeing eyes.

The way she looked at him made Ryoma shiver slightly. He HATED how Kagome always seem to know where he was sitting at the table or something. It freaked him out until he was able to get used to it a bit. Swallowing some of the miso soup, Ryoma answered, "I didn't know you wanted to play serious, Né-chan..."

"I saw a little of the match between them..." Nanako said, "And Kagome was doing really well. She might even give some of Ryoma's school friends a run for their money."

Kagome blushed a little at Nanako's praise before she heard her father say, "Of course. Don't forget who taught my girl how to play without her eyes." He was smug, the miko could tell from his voice but she let him feel proud of himself. He had some right to.

Close to the end of dinner, Rinko asked, "Tomorrow's your first day at Seigaku, right Kagome-chan?"

"Yes. Ryoma and I will be getting up early to get my schedule so that he won't have to miss his morning practice. After practice, every morning, he'll help me to my classes until I get the layout of the school down by memory." Kagome answered.

Ryoma looked up from his bowl of rice and asked, "You nervous?"

"A little... I still need to learn a little more of brail but I'll still be able to write like I used to."

The younger Echizen sibling smirked a little, "you gonna wear that uniform?"

Chuckling a bit, Kagome replied, "Yeah, I'll be wearing that uniform since I don't like wearing the short skirt with that big bow."

Nanjirou almost went into hysterics, thinking that his little girl was going to wear something inappropriate for school before Rinko stepped in, asking, "Are you sure you want to wear the boys' uniform for school, Kagome-chan? I think you would look cute in the girls' uniform."

"Yeah. I started to wear the boys' uniform sometime before my family passed away and I felt more comfortable in it than the girls' uniform." Kagome answered before smirking, "Plus, there would be no boys trying to look up my skirt without me noticing and trying to use my handicap to their advantage."

The former tennis pro sighed in relief and thought that it was a good idea for his daughter to wear the boys' uniform since he didn't want any boy trying to take advantage of his little girl.

Once dinner was over, Kagome went into the kitchen to feed her cat, Buyo before leaving to her room to take it easy.

Kagome entered her room and sat down on her bed, she grabbed her mp3 player off the nightstand next to her bed, put the headphone on her ears and pressed play. The soft music filled her ears as she gave a small smile and closed her eyes.

Flash backs:

Kagome five years old.

"Aniki!" Kagome laughed, launching herself into his chest. Her smile filled the room, her innocent blue eyes filled with happiness.

"What are you doing out here, Neko-chan?" Ryoga asked, a smirk gracing his lips.

Kagome huffed, and pulled away from Ryoga, "I'm not a Neko! I'm Ka-Go-me!"

Ryoga laughed, and patted kagome on the head, " Your still cute just like a Neko, Neko-chan!"

Kagome just glared at her brother, cheeks puffed out in anger, while her brother just chuckled.

"You're mean!" Kagome said stomping her foot.

"No just telling the truth imouto."

I finally moved to Jackson when the summer came
I won't have to pay that boy to rake my leaves

I'm probably going on and on
It seems I'm doing more of that these days

Kagome age six

Kagome and Ryoma looked around the empty room that used to be their Aniki's. They had come to see if he would play with them, but found his room cleared of most of his things, and Ryoga no where to be found.

Kagome's eyes started to tear up; getting an understanding of what had happened, "Aniki!" She fell to the ground crying, and Ryoma too started to tear up, getting a grasp of what happened. Their brother was gone, and they didn't know if he was ever coming back.

That was how Nanjiou and Rinko found them, crying in front of their brother's room, both wanting their brother, not anyone else. They got Ryoma to calm down, but no one could get Kagome to stop crying. She kept calling out for her Aniki; the only person who could make her stop crying, but he wouldn't come... nor was he able to hear her...

[CHORUS 1:]

I probably wouldn't be this way
I probably wouldn't hurt so bad
I never pictured every minute without you in it
Oh You left so fast

Sometimes I see you standing there
Sometimes it's like I'm losing touch
Sometimes I feel that I'm so lucky to have had the chance to love this much
God gave me a moment's grace
'Cause if I'd never seen your face
I probably wouldn't be this way

Mama says that I just shouldn't speak to you
Susan says that I should just move on

You oughta see the way these people look at me
When they see me 'round here talking to this stone

Everybody thinks I've lost my mind
But I just take it day by day

Kagome age 14

Kagome looked at Sango and Miroku, happily sitting together, with Shippó and Kirara in Sango's lap. It was over, the battle with Naraku was over. They had wo, and everyone was still alive...well not everyone. Kagome's eyes darkened, Inuyasha had made the decision of going to hell with Kikyo, and it hurt her, but she gave him her blessing and he thanked her for it.

She loved him, but she knew that they couldn't be together, they wouldn't last. Gathering her things up quietly, Kagome made her way to the well, but not before giving her friends one last glance. She knew that if she said goodbye she would never leave. So she is going to leave without one.

Looking over the well, Kagome smiled at the land around her, "I guess this is goodbye...Thank you for everything, Sango, Miroku, Shippó, Kirara...I love you all." Then she jumped down the well, never to return again.

CHORUS 2:]

I probably wouldn't be this way
I probably wouldn't hurt so bad
I never pictured every minute without you in it
Oh You left so fast

Sometimes I see you standing there
Sometimes I feel an angel's touch
Sometimes I feel that I'm so lucky to have had the chance to love this much
God gave me a moment's grace
Cause if I'd never seen your face
I probably wouldn't be this way
Probably wouldn't be this way

Flashback:

Kagome age 14, a month or two after returning home

Her mother and grandfather were in the front seat of the car while she and Souta were in the back. The four of them were on their way to Souta's soccer game. Her younger brother was so excited that his sister was finally going to see one of his games, and one that would lead his team to Regional.

Kagome just smiled as he talked adamantly, saying that he would do her proud and score for their team.

She soon felt something off, like something was about to happen. Looking out the window behind Souta, Kagome saw a car coming fast. And it looked like it wasn't slowing down. Her heart started to pound in her chest and the next thing she knew the car crashed into them. All Kagome remembered were bits and pieces of what happened.

The sound of her family's screams, the sound of glass breaking, metal bending, and the sound of a car slamming on its break and skidding. She also remembered the smell of oil and gas burning from a fire. The last thing that she remembered was pain... lots of pain and the sound of her own screams slicing through the air, then everything went black.

After a while of being unconscious, Kagome woke hearing the sounds of sirens from an ambulance and the police along with the yells of men and women trying to put out the fires. Her eyes hurt with a burning pain while the corners of her vision were bloodied and slightly blurred as she saw everything around her being upside down and her brother bloodied and not moving.

The next thing she knew, she was being pulled out of the car before paramedics checked her and took her to the hospital. On the way, while hearing the paramedics say she was going to be all right, Kagome's vision went dark.

End Flashback

Got A Date a week from Friday with a preacher's son
Everybody says I'm crazy
Guess I'll have to see

At that last memory of losing her family triggered her tears before they fell from the corners of her blind eyes.

When Kagome woke up in the hospital, she couldn't see anything and the doctors told her that pieces of glass from the crash got in her eyes, damaging the cornea permanently.

The doctor had told her she could get surgery done, but she didn't want anyone to pay for that. It was expensive. She would just have to find a way to move around normally as she was: blind.

Kagome opened her eyes and looked up unseeingly at the ceiling as she held back her tears. She didn't want to cry anymore. She had done that enough over the years.

The knock on her door brought her out of her thoughts.

"Come in." Kagome called, sitting up in her bed.

"Né-san, you want to go for a walk...? It's still light out and I though it would be nice to get you out of the house." Ryoma asked, entering the room and sitting down on the bed next to her.

Kagome smiled and nodded, she took the headphones of her ears and placed them around her neck before she turned off the mp3 and clipped it to her pocket. "Come on... let's go."

Before Ryoma was about to help lead her to the staircase, he pointed out, "Oh, don't forget your rackets. We can play some street tennis before coming back."

"Alright, Ryoma."

After Kagome picked up her bag of rackets and her sunglasses, she let Ryoma lead out the house once he got his rackets.

Their walk was a peaceful one on the way to the park where the Street Tennis courts were. They were able to get a couple banana chocolate crepes before sitting down to enjoy them. After they had finished them, they played a short game of tennis before heading home.

During the game, they had drawn quite a crowd; most of them being tennis players themselves. Their game ended in a tie before they decided to head home.

Once they were home, Kagome took a shower to wash herself of the slight grim and sweat she gained from playing against Ryoma. After she was clean and refreshed, Kagome dressed into her pajamas and went to her room; counting the doors from the bathroom to her room.

As she started to relax under her comforter, she wondered how tomorrow will turn out...

Chapter Two

Kagome and Ryoma were on there way to school with the former being nervous on starting her first day, but she knew everything was going to be okay. As they walked Kagome could hear all the different conversations that were going around. When she walked by some people she caught what they were saying, and held back a laugh when she heard who they were talking about. Her brother pulled on her uniform sleeve, and knew if she could see he would be giving her a questionable look. Kagome shook her head, indication it was nothing. Her mind went back to what she heard.

"Echizen Ryoma?" multiple voices asked.

"Have you heard of him?"

"Nope"

"From what Momo tells me, he is no regular freshmen."

"Well, if he said that it must be true; in that case we should be grateful."

After that she couldn't hear any more of their conversation. They didn't know how right they were... he wasn't a normal freshman, and couldn't wait 'til they figured out how un-normal he was, but Kagome would never say that to his face though.

Once they had made it to Seishun and after finishing some business at the office, they headed straight to the Tennis courts to start morning practice. Because Kagome wanted to give the impression of her being a boy, and so that Ryoma would feel more at ease about being where he could see her, the miko decided to act the part of being Ryoma's older brother and join the boys' tennis club.

Not that she minded. She found boys more challenging than girls when it came to certain sports, especially when she started to like playing tennis, despite her handicap. Not to mention she had always faced males, both human and demon while in the Sengoku era when fighting for her life.

But thanks to her father's teachings, playing blind in tennis didn't bother her anymore. It was thanks to her father that she was able to do something that Ryoma enjoyed and could participate with him.

It was also another reason why she wanted to be a part of the boys' tennis club.

Once they had changed into their training clothes, they went out and made their way to where the boys' tennis club was meeting with their racket bags slung over their shoulders.

At the tennis courts, the siblings started to get ready for practice, stretching and tightening their shoelaces a little, before they heard someone call out their last name. Sometime after Kagome moved in with her father and Ryoma, Kagome decided to take in her father's name while still keeping her Higurashi name as a middle name. Nanjirou was fine with it and wouldn't have had it any other way.

Both siblings turned to where they heard the voice and Ryoma saw that it was his classmate, Horio along with Katsuo and Kachiro. He saw the three of them look at his sister curiously before Horio asked, "Oi, Echizen... who's the second year with you?"

Ryoma turned to his sister, taking in her appearance. For anyone who didn't know her, they would've mistaken her for a skinny feminine-looking boy with long hair and sunglasses.

With his and Nanako's help, they took her shopping for boys clothes for her to wear at tennis. Right now, she wore cargo shorts that reached her knees, the standard polo shirt with red sleeves that the first years wear, since even though she was second year she was barely a beginner and had to start from the bottom, and on her head was a cap that Ryoma bought for her last birthday. It was the same color as her eyes and had a majestic white fox embroidered on it. To make her more boy-like, Kagome said that she could stuff her hair in the cap and strap her breasts down and just wear white boys' undershirt to make it possible. And lastly, to hide that fact that she was blind, Kagome wore a pair of slim sunglasses.

The reason for hiding her gender was so that Kagome could play alongside Ryoma, spend more time with him while also be given the challenge to play against strong opponents who were more serious about tennis than the school's Tennis Club for Girls. Their father, Nanjiro called the principle for special permission, even though he knew – without Kagome and Ryoma's knowing – that there was a new rule that allowed girls to play together with the boys.

To answer Horio's question, Ryoma answered, "This is my Ní-san, Echizen Kagome. Ní-san, these are Horio, Katsuo and Kachiro, my classmates."

Kagome nodded in their direction, "Nice to meet you guys."

Katsuo and Kachiro returned the greeting before Horio asked, "Ne, Echizen-senpai... do you play tennis as good as your brother?"

The cross dressing girl turned to Horio's general direction before answering, "To be honest, I haven't played tennis that long. I've just started learning a few months ago."

"Ehh?! Only a couple of months?" Horio asked in disbelief.

Kagome nodded, not really paying attention to him but was paying attention more to the sound of tennis balls being hit while she was making sure her shoes were securely tied before hearing Ryoma's other two friends, Kachiro and Katsuo talk in low tones.

"Ryoma-kun's brother kinda acts like him in personality, ne?"

"Yeah... but I'm curious about how well he plays tennis and if he's as good as Ryoma-kun."

The miko in boys' clothes smirked slightly before standing, "I'm somewhat close to Ryoma's skill, despite how recently I've learned to play." She heard the two gasp before she chuckled as Ryoma stood and walked past her while handing her one of her rackets.

As they were about to walk away, Horio started talking about the things that went with Seigaku's tennis club and how they picked their regulars.

Kagome knew Ryoma thought that it was useless information as she heard the other freshmen gather around the annoying boy while he bragged about having two years of tennis experience.

The Echizen siblings sighed before a second year walked up to them, asking (more like demanding), "Oi, which one of you is the 'super freshman'?"

"Super Freshman?" The siblings said simultaneously before Ryoma looked around and pointed to Horio as Kagome thought, 'Did this guy just mistake me for a freshman? But then again, I am a bit shorter than the average second year boy.' Then remembering she was only an inch or two taller than Ryoma, Kagome corrected herself, 'never mind... I'm a lot shorter than the average second year boy.'

While Kagome raised a brow at the second year's direction, Ryoma looked thoughtful for a moment before pointing to Horio and saying he was the one the second year was looking for.

"That guy?" The second year asked, looking at Horio a bit doubtful before admitting, "I see, he stands out with that colorful outfit."

One of the other practicing Second Years then called out to the First Years, "Hey, first years! Why are you standing around?" Kagome could hear annoyance in his voice before someone close to him said the leave them alone.

Kagome heard the second year in front of them mutter a thanks to them before making his way to where Horio was bragging and thinking he could take the Buchou of the club. She slightly felt sorry for the boy as she followed her brother to another part of the court just to toss a few balls to each other.

While doing so, she could hear the second year boy, who spoke to them, tell Horio to stop talking about the ranking matches and that first years couldn't participate; they were to do ball fetching and stamina training until the summer and that second years and third years were determined for Regulars.

'Sounds like Ryoma may have to wait, unless someone notices his talents.' Kagome thought as she barely caught that ball Ryoma tossed to her.

Back with Horio and the other freshman, Horio was a bit downhearted that the first years weren't allowed to participate for a place in the Regulars before Arai came up, "Why are you wasting time on first years?"

The second year acknowledged him, "Ah... this is the super first year."

Arai raised a brow at his friend, "Huh? What are you talking about? The one who played Momoshiro the other day isn't him." He then turned to where Ryoma and Kagome were, "There, that slightly smaller guy with the cap."

Kagome heard some cursing and smirked before muttering to Ryoma, "Sounds like you pissed that guy off for making a fool of him."

"Doesn't matter..." Ryoma answered offhandedly.

After morning Club activities, everyone headed to the locker room to change. Kagome felt her brother's hesitance to let her in to change but told him softly that she had a muscle shirt under her t-shirt and since she was blind, there was no use in getting embarrassed about seeing the other boys strip to change.

Once most of the first years were done changing and left, Kagome was untying her shoes and taking her sunglasses off before getting a towel to dab her face a bit as Horio spoke, "I heard that the Buchou, Tezuka-senpai, went undefeated. Isn't that awesome?"

Kachiro and Katsuo with deadpanned looks before Kachiro spoke, "That's not something Horio-kun should brag about." Katsuo made a sound of agreement as the two turned to their locker cubbies.

Horio gave them a shrug before turning to the younger of the Echizen siblings and asked, "Ne, Echizen... isn't it bad to be hated by the second years?" Ryoma didn't say anything as Kagome took her cap off, letting her hair down and continued to listen, "that Arai-san seems to be pretty strict about Senpai-Kohai relationships. He must hate you."

"That's just because Ryoma probably somehow hurt his pride and Arai-san's just pissed at the fact that a Kohai outdid him in something. It's nothing but a type of superiority complex a few Senpais go through when 'new blood' enters their school." Kagome pointed out as she took her cap and shirt off revealing the actual length of her hair and her muscle shirt-clad torso that hid her bounded breasts from view. To anyone, she looked like a very skinny boy.

Ryoma's friends stared at her with surprise, never thinking that Ryoma's 'older brother' was so thin and had such long hair. They never had the chance to see 'his' eyes because he had them closed the whole time he was changing.

Horio's attention was then turned back to Ryoma when he noticed that the boy was sitting on Arai's jersey. His abrupt outburst made Kagome jump with her eyes snapping open and looking at his direction as he yelled, "Why did you have to be sitting on Arai-san's jersey!"

After getting an 'oh well' from Ryoma, Kagome slapped Horio on the arm, "Damn it, Horio! You didn't have to make a huge fuss over something like that! You scared the crap out of me."

Rubbing his arm, Horio replied, "But you can't treat a senpai's belongings that way."

"Too bad. From what I've been hearing, he's going to be treating anyone below him like crap, so may as well give him the same treatment; senpai or not. Besides, I'm a second year too... and just because he's a classmate, doesn't mean I have to acknowledge him as a so-called equal or someone who's above me." Kagome stated before going back to changing into her school uniform. As Horio going to say something, she pointed out after finishing dressing and was about to tie her shoes, "You guys better hurry up or you'll be late for class."

With that, Horio, Kachiro, and Katsuo started to quicken their pace in changing before they finished and headed out the door. Kagome stayed behind, putting her shades back on and waited for Ryoma to finish up so that he could help her to her first class. As Kagome heard Horio open the door before saying that he'd catch them later, the miko tennis player then heard him bum into someone before Arai's voice came.

Ryoma caught her attention by calling her name after he finished changing. Once their shoes were on, they left with their tennis bags (Kagome's were borrowed from Nanjiro until they get a set of her own) but not after giving Arai a brief "cheers" as they walked past him
