A Miko's Second Chance
Chapter One
"Don't worry, sir. I'll be able to get rid of the monsters that are within your home and protect your lovely wife and young daughter with all I have. You can count on me." Kantaro said to his newest client with confidence.
The client now was a middle-aged man who was really in his late sixties- early seventies and came from a very well-known and powerful family, more known as the Otógawa family. They were very well known for being a family of scholars as well as spiritualists.
The husband/client came to Kantaro asking for assistance in making sure whether or not the lower-class monsters that are attracted to his daughter are as harmless as she and his wife have said or if they're dangerous. The client, Otógawa Hyokín said that he was willing to pay five times the regular amount if only to have Kantaro make sure that he and his sons have nothing to worry about with his daughter and wife's safety.
The maid, who also came with Hyokín, was also worried about her master's wife and daughter. She admired her master's daughter and wife for being strong spiritualists and kind people; most especially the daughter with her wise words and a gentleness that was equal to Hyokín's wife.
Kantaro, after hearing how much Hyokín was willing to pay, he jumped at the chance and accepted the case with Yoko agreeing full heartedly. And since the Otógawa family was rich, there was a chance for Kantaro to woo the daughter to win her affections and maybe even marry her and become a part of the family. He could be set for life without work.
Suzu, knowing Kantaro's habits was disgusted at how he and Yoko tried to make plans on how to win the affections of the client's daughter.
Haruka, like always, thought that it was ridiculous while he stayed silent and listened to the client's case. It seemed simple enough despite Hyokín was paying them so much for the safety of his family.
Otógawa Hyokín thanked and bowed to the young spiritualist and sighed in relief. Finally, he could relax knowing that his house and family would once again be safe. He smiled and invited Kantaro over for tea. Kantaro accepted, wanting to see more of the family.
Haruka, Suzu, and Yoko were also invited since they were also curious about meeting the family.
It seemed that Hyokín and his maid traveled from the outskirts of Tokyo but to pass the time on the trolley, they made some conversation.
"Again, thank you for accepting my case, Mr. Ichinomiya. I truly appreciate this and I know my wife and daughter will appreciate your help as well." Hyokín spoke in a thankful tone.
"It's no problem at all, Mr. Otógawa." Kantaro replied before asking, "So what exactly has been going on with the monsters and your home? Anything severe?"
"Oh! No, nothing like that! As I had said at your home, I just want to make sure that the monsters are not evil and won't do anything to hurt my family. Despite both my wife and daughter are very skilled with exorcisms, my wife has been ill and bedridden. And my daughter already has enough on her plate with someone; a young man, who's very skeptical, trying to court her." After a pause, Hyokín continued, "despite that they both say not to worry about the demons, I still can't help but be worried for both of their safeties. I also am not sure about my daughter's abilities..."
"So you want Kantaro to see if the monsters pose a threat to your family or not while your wife is recovering." it was more of a statement than a question from Haruka.
The maid was the one who replied, "Yes. The master's daughter, although gifted and very talented with her spiritual powers, he's not sure if she'll be able to handle them if they do pose a threat without her mother there for guidance, despite that she says they are harmless."
Kantaro looked like he was deep in thought before speaking, "When concerning lower-class monsters, some of them are usually pretty harmless and don't mean any harm to humans, but those tend to cause trouble just do so to get our attention or they just scare us while not meaning to. And others just tend to be horrible tricksters to gain rank. But still, we'll check to see if the monsters that are drawn to your wife and daughter are of no danger."
After Hyokín expressed his gratitude, Suzu asked curiously, "How old is your daughter, Mr. Otógawa?"
"Oh she had just turned eighteen two months ago and already has more suitors after her hand in marriage. Right now, one of those suitors is staying with us for a while until he's finished with meeting my eldest son who should be home by the time we make it there." Hyokín replied with much love in his voice when it came to his daughter.
Looking out the window of the trolley that was headed to the train station, he started thinking about the day he brought his daughter home.
Eighteen years ago, when his eldest son was already fourteen and his twin sons were eleven, Hyokín was on his morning walk when he suddenly came across a basket and found a baby girl giving small whimpers in her sleep before waking and seeing him with big beautiful bright blue eyes.
Looking around he saw no one in sight before looking to the baby girl and noticing a letter. Once he had picked it up, Hyokín read a plea for whoever found the baby to take her in or at least find her a loving family and a good home to be raised in. And at the closing of the letter was the mention of the baby's name.
'Kagome.'
Although a simple name and similar to the children's song and the Kagome seal, it just seemed to suit the little blue-eyed, raven haired baby that looked up at him.
