Summary: The threat of Naraku is no longer fear and the Jewel becoming one with Kagome's body, allowing the Miko to go home before living with Sesshoumaru and many of her other demon friends. A few years after, in the year 1999, the Nuclear World War starts and bombs start dropping in Japan and the rest of the world. With no time to evacuate the country or even to get the Miko out, Sesshoumaru takes her below the mansion and forces a deep sleep on her, and forms a barrier within the cavern to keep her safe.
For over ten thousand years, Kagome's slept... never waking... never aging. At least, until a certain dhampir comes along after a hunt...
Prologue
Looking herself in the mirror, Kagome sighed while blushing at the compliments her handmaid was giving her. She was currently wearing a long pure white silk kimono with faded purple blossoms, complimented with its matching silk obi being pale lavender with a matching cord that tired around her waist. The length of the kimono allowed it drag on the floor as she walked and stood as the obi itself was pretty thick in width so the size of her bow reached from below her shoulder to a bit below her hip and the rest of the obi that was left reached almost to her knees.
The kimono was given to her by Sesshoumaru for her to wear at the gathering he and a few other demon lords and their affiliated clans (both human and demon) arranged to celebrate the five hundred and second year of the alliance they've made since Naraku's defeat as well as honor their fellow comrades who fell in the battle.
For her hair, most of it was held up in a large but loose bun that was held but a pair of matching kanzashi (hairsticks) with petal-like tendrils curved up around a pearl. Six of the longer tendrils of silver were studded with clear crystal rhinestones while the remaining six were of shining silver and un-studded. And connected to the longest un-studded tendril were three thin chains that dangled with singular clear rhinestones at the end of each chain. Because the hairstyle was so loose, some stray strands of her raven hair fell and framed her face with her bangs. And on her ears were five-petal flower ear studs of sterling silver.
Both the earrings and the kanzashi were from her son, Shippó as a birthday gift for her recent eighteenth birthday. The miko had very little makeup with only light touches of lavender eye shadow, a very light touch of blush, and lip-gloss that brought out the pink of her lips.
About two years had passed since Naraku's death when in a desperate attempt to kill them all the hanyou reabsorbed all his incarnations too quickly without even realizing that he reabsorbed his human heart, which was still in Kanna's care. With the hanyou's heart being absorbed back into him, all that were present at the battlefield jumped at the chance to kill him with none of his incarnations being an obstacle any longer and Naraku was now vulnerable and easier to kill now that he had his heart be in his body.
Everyone combined their attacks, Kagome's sacred arrow and the Inu brothers' swords giving said attack a great boost in power, and was able to destroy the spider hanyou. With Naraku gone, Kagome was able to restore the jewel back to its original state but instead of making a wish on it, the jewel merged with Kagome's body and soul.
After burying the dead, paying respects, long celebrations, and Sango and Miroku's wedding, it was time to say Kagome's goodbyes to her friends and allies whom she came to view as family. While she would never be able to see her human friends, she was promised that she would be able to see her demon friends in her era. Maybe, even sooner than she expected...
And sooner it was.
Once Kagome was home in her era, Sesshoumaru and an adult Shippó were waiting for her arrival at the Goshinboku. It was after that when Sesshoumaru invited her to live with him so that she could finish high school and maybe even continue to live with him through college. And with her mother's permission, Kagome was allowed to do so with the promise of always calling and sending letters to make sure she was all right.
The handmaid, who Sesshoumaru had designated to her, continued to gush on how beautiful the miko looked. Her voice brought Kagome out of her thoughts just as her bedroom door opened to reveal Shippó, dressed in his traditional attire consisting of dark hakama and a teal haori that had white lotuses on the shoulders and sleeves.
She smiled at him while turning away from the mirrior before her kitsune son grinned, "Wow, Ká-san... you have no idea how beautiful you look."
"That's what Karin had been gushing about since before she did my hair and makeup," Kagome said with an upturn of her lips. She noticed the handmaid blush sheepishly before asking Shippó, "Have all the guests arrived?"
"Yep! And we're all waiting for you to join us down at the ballroom." The kitsune answered before offering his arm to his mother so he could lead her downstairs to the other guests.
The Miko accepted her son's offer and linked her arm with his, allowing him to lead her to the gathering.
Sometime later, as they were about to walk down the stairs, a bright light flashed through every window almost blinding them. All the chattering they heard quieted down to soft mutters of what had happened. Shippó and Kagome looked to each other worriedly before continuing their way down and made a beeline to where Sesshoumaru stood looking out the windows in the direction the light came from.
Coming to stand next to him, Kagome heard the Northern Dragon Lord, who stood next to Sesshoumaru, mutter, "Something doesn't feel right... the last time I had this feeling was when the Americans bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945 ..."
"I know..." Sesshoumaru agreed, having to have lived through the horrors of the two world wars.
"... Aniki...?" Kagome spoke softly. She could feel her fear creep into her soul when she felt everyone around her tense in apprehension of what was happening.
The Inu Lord's eyes narrowed as the light completely faded in the distance. Seeing a mushroom cloud appear once the light faded, he cursed before demanding everyone in the room to take cover. As he went to take Kagome into his arms and protect her with his body, a thundering sounded with the glass of the windows breaking and flying throughout the room at the force of the wind with yells and screams of surprise echoed in the room while the occupants ducked for cover as the shards of hit them before landing on the ground. Even the force of the wind managed to blow both humans and demons away from the windows.
Some of them, both human and demon, became injured due to the force of the blast that pushed them away from the windows causing them to crash into something solid or shards of glass managing to nick or even embed themselves into their skin.
Knowing this was only the first of what was the come from the explosion, Sesshoumaru helped Kagome up as he yelled to everyone in the room, "It's not over yet! The humans and younger demons don't have time to evacuate before the secondary comes, so I want everyone to head for the sublevels below basement and take cover in the underground caverns! GO NOW!"
He then turned to his nephew and fellow lords, "Each of you must lead them down below as quickly as you can and make sure all women, children, elderly, and the injured from the first blast go first."
Turning to Shippó last once the other lords had set out to take care of the safety of their clans, Sesshoumaru concluded, "I want you to lead those in our clan down below in my place while I take the miko down to the Lunar Caverns where she'll be most safe. Once you and the other lords are certain that everyone's made it, tell them to erect a barrier within all the occupied caverns and cast a hibernation spell so that we'll be certain no one panics once the danger's over. We don't have much time before there's a chance of another bomb dropping on us. Now, get going!"
Kagome's heart raced from fear of what was happening.
Everyone around her was almost in a panic, following their lords and clan leaders to get to the underground caverns and Sesshoumaru kept her close to him to make sure she didn't fall while taking her in the same direction. Not able to stay quiet as they went down deeper and deeper into the sublevels of the mansion, Kagome asked, "Sesshoumaru, what's going on? Why are there bombs dropping in Japan?"
"There were supposed to be bombs dropping all over the world. I didn't believe this would be happening so soon."
Not understanding what he meant, the miko forced him to stop in his tracks, "What do you mean by that? You and the other lords knew about this?"
When Sesshoumaru's eyes met Kagome, he sighed. This was nothing like the wars she survived in the Sengoku. Back then, bombs and guns weren't made yet and the miko had never lived through World Wars one and two like he and the other lords... so he had no choice but to tell her, if only to let her know what might happen and so she wouldn't be left in the dark.
"I'll tell you on the way to the Lunar Caverns where you'll be most safe. We have to move quickly before they attack again." Seeing her nod, Sesshoumaru led her with the rest who were also walking the same direction.
As the concrete steps turned to those of dirt and stone, Sesshoumaru started, "During winter of 1997, there had been talk that there would be a war stirring worldwide; a third world war with Nagasaki and Hiroshima happening again but all over the world. All world leaders are attacking each other with no regard for any innocent lives that will be taken."
Leading Kagome through a different tunnel than the rest that led to the Lunar Caverns, Sesshoumaru continued, "All through '98 and after the first of '99, all countries started preparing for the war in secret while also working to make sufficient amounts of nuclear bombs. None of this was revealed to the masses or the media but all military and political personnel were informed to prepare for the worst while waiting for whoever will make the first attack. I don't know why or who started this but it doesn't matter now... there's no way to prevent the attacks unless all countries give."
"With the attack being so sudden... no one's able to evacuate the islands and chance of survival will be slim. But will the caverns hold out and be able to keep everyone safe?"
Seeing that they were close to the main chamber of the Lunar Caverns, Sesshoumaru answered, "They will if we enforce the barriers where they are taking cover within them. We'll make room for everyone, even if it has to be a tight squeeze. And so that we can make sure everyone survives and not to cause panic, the other lords and Shippó will cast a spell to enforce everyone into hibernation. Once we're certain that the danger has passed, we'll lift the sleeping spell from everyone. We don't know how long this war will last, but we will hibernate in these caverns as long as it takes."
As they entered one of the caves, almost all surfaces were covered in pure white Night Blooming Cereus (Epiphyllum Oxypetalum), growing from the long and flat leaf-like stems of thorn-less cacti that could be seen under the blossoms. The acute petal flowers seemed to glow from their centers with its own energy, lighting the cavern in a soft white glow.
Following behind the Daiyoukai along the narrow beaten path of the cavern's floor in between the organized areas of the cacti beds and careful not to step on the leaf-like stems, Kagome asked, "how long do you plan to allow the sleep spell to last?"
Once he had led them to the center of cavern among the blossoms, Sesshoumaru looked to her, hands resting on her shoulders, and answered, "So that we can be certain the war will be over by then, the spell I'll cast on myself and the other lords will last for a thousand years, maybe more. After casting the spell, the other lords and I will erect barriers to make certain everyone will be safe from any sudden collapses from above. But once we're sure the war is over, we'll wake everyone and move to the surface to see if there's a chance for us to survive." He then lifted a hand to rest on her cheek, "the spell I'll cast on you will be just like everyone else and I'll come to wake you when we're sure it's safe."
Kagome could understand what he was saying since she was certain he didn't want anything to happen to her. Not to mention the sleep spell he'd be using on them and the others would be similar to cryonic-hibernation, preserving the body while alive but without freezing the person in sleep. Thus, she along with the humans and demons with them would not age and would still be alive.
The only side effect was that after waking from the forced sleep was that it would be like waking from a coma and your muscles would be weak from not being used in so long. And not to mention the aging of the person, whether human or demon, would be reduced greatly, allowing them to age much slower; humans would age as slow as the average demon while demons would age a whole lot slower than they originally did.
As Sesshoumaru was going to cast the spell, Kagome made him stop for a moment, asking "My family... Aniki! My mother, Jí-chan, and Souta! They're in Tottori! What about them?!"
The Daiyoukai didn't answer her but he did look at her with regret. Although, he had invited his imouto's family to come to his mansion just outside of Kuji City, close to the coast in the Iwate Prefecture, Kagome's mother had found a new love that was taking her as well as Souta and their grandfather to Tottori for a camping/beach trip... so there was no way to contact them or even try to get them to safety.
Before Kagome could say anymore, Sesshoumaru's had cast the spell making her eyes grow heavy and became engulfed in darkness with the sensation of falling. The last words she heard as her demon brother's arms wrapped around her were regret filled words of 'forgive me' before she could hear nothing else and was pulled deeper into the darkness of forced sleep...
