He carefully laid her back down feeling her limpness, he was fully leaning over her now counting her breaths, they were even which was a good sign.
"Casita open the door." He called out hearing the door open and fresh air blew into the room. Then he started blowing in her face gently.
"Come on Mira." He said carefully using both hands he rubbed her neck trying to get her blood flowing.
"I haven't lost one yet Mother or baby and I am not starting with either of you. I promise I will take care of you but you need to stay strong." He said hearing her breathing change telling him that she was coming back.
"That's it. Come on back Mirabel." He said carefully moving her face to look at him as her eyes fluttered.
"It will be ok. You have my word." he said right to her face as her eyes fluttered open before he bolted upright. Bruno caught her as she was immediately awake.
"GAHHHHHHH!, AHHHHHHHH!" She screamed as Bruno held her glad that she was awake again, he felt her squeeze her legs around his hips and loved the feeling.
"That's my girl just let it out." He said holding onto her as if for dear life. Mirabel leaned her head forward feeling comfortable in her Uncles embrace as he held her.
"I am so tired." She cried with a sob as her head panged with pain wrapping her arms around him to cry in his shoulder.
"I know and I will let you rest but not as a faint." He said letting her cry into his shoulder.
"What now? How much longer do I have to go through this?" She asked him squeezing her body that was wrapped around him as he had his arms wrapped around her.
"Like I told you. Labor can take up to days." He said gently into her ear which made her sob out in mental pain.
"i can't do this." She cried holding him for dear life.
"Are you kidding?" He said still holding her.
"You're Mirabel Madrigal you can do anything." he said tenderly holding her head as he made her laugh.
He leaned away and making her look at him through her tired eyes that she rubbed but he stopped her. He took her face and kissed her forehead again before climbing off of her making her notice how he had her legs over his and she had felt a soft tube pressing into her open mons but they were separated by his pants, poncho, the blanket, and her nightdress. She still felt it all but she didn't care really so instead she just laid back against the pillows and rested.
She watched him flitter around his equipment before picking up a horn like device. He pulled her nightgown up above her belly before pressing one side of the horn to her belly and the other to his ear he looked at her and smiled as he listened.
"Very good." He said pulling himself up and grabbing the horn.
"What is it?" She asked him tiredly.
"Oh this is a Pinard it helps me listen to the baby's heartbeat." He said twirling the horn in his hand with an accomplished smile.
"And did you?" She asked not moving much.
"Yes. the baby's heartbeat is strong just like his mother." He said placing the Pinard back on the towel after wiping it down before he heard sobbing.
He turned back towards her and went back to her.
"Mirabel it will be ok. I promise you aren't the first woman to feel like this." He said brushing her sweaty hair from her forehead.
"It not just the labor Bruno." She cried turning over on her side to put her head in his lap making him settle better.
"How can I be a mother? What if its a boy? Will he grow up to be just like his father?" She asked rhetorically staring at his stomach who watched her inner turmoil while twirling her hair.
"Mirabel?" he gently said catching her chin and making her look up at him.
"I already know that you are going to be a great mother." he said leaning over her letting his curly tendrils hanging in her face.
"How?" She asked crying again.
"Because you are already worried about their future and who the child will become." He said nudging her chin.
"What if I am no good at it?" She asked up at him as she clutched his red poncho.
"Then you have me, your parents, your sisters, Pepa, Abuela. All of us, we will all be here for you." he said running his fingers through her hair.
They sat there in silence waiting for a contraction or anything. But things were calm and quiet as was the storm.
"Don't leave me." he said sleepily look up at him.
"There isn't anywhere I would rather be." he said down to her she smiled and relaxed as Bruno watched as her eyes slowly fell and he waited until her breathing evened out.
He was careful in holding her head before slowly he resituated himself laying down in front of her he had switched his legs with a pillow on top of his arm, though the position wasn't ideal as they were laying diagonal on the bed it was an opportunity to rest as things were calm for the moment. He pulled up the blanket as he wrapped himself around her using his leg to help her hold her belly, he tucked her head under his chin as he got comfortable. He drifted his eyes closed loving this feeling more than he should and just for a moment he imagined that this was his wife just as he did with all of the others who also needed comfort.
