Mirabel had to rub her eyes when her blankets were tossed off of her, she wore her usual light pink nightgown as her other wore black once again staring down at Mirabel with a serious expression.
"Mama?" She asked sleepily but she was ignored as Luisa who wore a black skirt with a grey and black shirt picked Mirabel up and Mirabel could fight as her mother stripped her of her nightdress.
"What's going on?" Mirabel asked trying to cover herself but both stayed silent, Julietta helped her pull on a black dress. The dress was tied tight and Casita scuttles over black shoes while Luisa handed Mirabel her glasses while she looked over at the crib expecting Mateo but not finding him.
"Where's Mateo?" Mirabel asked worriedly as she was pushed out the door.
"He is somewhere safe," Julietta said as they lead Mirabel out of Casita and through town. Mirabel noticed that every villager was out watching their walk and she felt the shame they all gave her instantly she felt anxiety worried that someone had found out what they had done but she knew it was impossible because Bruno wouldn't have told anyone. They arrived at the Church and Luisa gently guided Mirabel to the stage where the Father wore a black ceremonial robe with a stern expression. The Church was filled with the men of Encanto all wearing black as well and she recognized this immediately, it was just like before. She was on trial with the Men's society.
Isabela set a chair facing the audience and Luisa guided Mirabel to sit. On stage with The Father was her family all looking stern and wearing black as well but Mateo was nowhere in sight which made Mirabel worried.
Then all heads turned as the second accused arrived.
Bruno had put on his black clothes for the Encanto Men's Society meeting at the Church and he wore his green poncho too, but as he walked he felt the shameful stares of the villagers and the glares from his fellow members when he arrived at the church. His anxiety rose as he walked the aisle being stared at. He looked up on stage to find his family all staring too while His mother wore a black dress standing right next to The Father center stage behind a very frightened-looking Mirabel but Mateo was nowhere in sight. He walked down the aisle heading straight for the stage and he couldn't help the awkward chill running down his spine as silent whispers spread around the room and reverberated off the vaulted ceiling.
Bruno stepped onto the stage looking at Mirabel and mouthed 'Where's Mateo?' to which she mouthed back 'They took him.' Now over the years, Bruno has developed a good instinct and since being back in his business they have enhanced so he knew something was up and now that Mirabel was Center stage and whoever has Mateo, he was in a very bad situation.
"What's going on?" Bruno asked looking towards his mother who stared at him with the same sternness she had all those years ago. Alma Madrigal stepped forward and Mirabel could only watch and observe.
"Bruno Madrigal you are hereby accused of incestuous actions with your own niece Mirabel Madrigal," Alma said accusatorily. Instantly Bruno looked shocked before looking at Mirabel and she instantly shook her head with a look of fear.
"I haven't accused him of anything," Mirabel said standing but her sister's hand on her shoulder kept her seated. She was worried and scared but Bruno took a deep breath before standing tall just like he did at the river ready to take the blame for Mirabel.
"What exactly are you accusing me of?" Bruno asked looking fierce.
"Do you not think it inappropriate for a man to be the midwife to his own niece?" The Father asked him incredulously. Bruno took a deep breath as did Mirabel who held her head in her hands.
"You mean was it wrong for me to spend an entire night helping my niece who had gone into labor without knowing that she was pregnant? My niece, who only 9 months before had been greatly harmed and hurt by another man? My niece, who was scared to have the child of her rapist and didn't want to be alone?" Bruno called out letting everyone hear as whispers continued around.
"Are you saying you are not ashamed of what you have done?" Alma said accusatorily.
"I have no reason to be. What should I have done? Left Mirabel all scared, alone, and in labor for the first time about to have the child of her rapist while I run into town in the middle of a storm to find a midwife more qualified not knowing if I would make it in time or even be able to make it back to Mirabel at all? Her labor was long and hard, can any of you imagine how frightening it would have been for her if I had left her like that? Crying, alone, in pain, and afraid?" Bruno called out making his position known that he was not afraid. The whispers around the Church were loud now all pointing at Bruno's shamelessness.
"I'm glad!" Mirabel called out making them all look at her.
"I'm glad he stayed. I begged him too. I didn't want to be alone I was so afraid and I didn't know what to do, my family was too far to help but he was there. so I am glad that he was there for me." Mirabel said as she was held in her seat by Luisa. Her family all felt sorrowful because they couldn't be there but still stared at Bruno expectedly. The rest of the people all looked at her with sad understanding but with the same shame, they held for Bruno while switching to looking at the family just because they were mentioned.
"Bruno? How do you plead?" Alma asked looking at her son with dark accusing eyes. Bruno took in a breath as his eyes started to glow and the gasps around the room told him which made him shut his eyes and take a deep breath before opening them with his regular eyes.
"I plead guilty." He said officially making Mirabel.
"NO," She cried out able to brush her sister off and stand up but she was caught and held gently but strongly.
"Please, I don't blame him. It's my fault." Mirabel shouted but she was held strongly by Luisa. She didn't struggle but held her sister's arms that held her as she cried out in self-blame. Bruno looked at her with thankfulness as he looked back at his mother whose eyes filled with rage.
"HOW DARE YOU." She screamed at her son.
"DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU HAVE DONE?" Alma continued to scream at Bruno who stood there and took it.
"HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO FIND A DECENT MATCH FOR HER NOW, BRUNO?" She waved her arm behind her as Luisa sat Mirabel back in the chair as Mirabel cried.
"No man wants a woman that isn't pure and what man would want the only giftless Madrigal who has not only been with a man but has been touched by her own Uncle and has a child on top of it all." Alma accused.
"Abuela, please. I don't need to be married. I am fine with the way things are." Mirabel cried making Abuela look back at her.
"I won't have it, Mirabel. You are a Madrigal. you need to have a husband and my great-grandchild needs a father." Abuela said a little harshly. Mirabel kept crying as she felt her life being derailed slowly.
"Isn't Bruno being the Godfather enough? Because it is for me!" Mirabel asked with begging eyes to her grandmother. But Abuela just turned to the vast group of men who stood watching for the trial.
"I have asked every eligible man within marrying age to see if they want you for a bride and you know what I heard?" Abuela said motioning out her hands to the crowd before turning to Bruno.
"They want a Madrigal with a real gift, nor do they want a woman who already has a child," Abuela said as Bruno was breathing deeply.
"Mirabel," Abuela said looking back at her as she too was breathing deeply unsure of what to do.
"As a Madrigal, you have expectations within this community, you already have one child but that isn't enough and you don't have a gift. What more can I do with you?" Abuela asked letting tears roll down her cheeks.
"DOES ANY MAN HERE WANT TO TAKE THIS WOMAN AS HIS BRIDE?" Alma asked addressing the audience instantly causing shouts o disgrace.
"You're useless Mirabel."
"No giftless."
"Send her away."
"Lock her up."
"FREAK."
Mirabel cried and shook as the shouts were horrible and all were against her, Bruno bristled at them and decided to take action.
"Mama?" Bruno said leaning closer to her as the shouts continued making her look at him.
"I'm sorry. But I can't fix it, neither can Julietta, and neither can Mirabel. What more do you want? I can leave if that would help..." Bruno said before he was stopped by the hand of Alma in silence.
"No, I only have one solution to fix this," Abuela said making everyone look at her expectantly.
"Bruno Madrigal, as penance for ruining Mirabel's chances I am hereby ordering for your marriage," Alma said making them all stare at Bruno who was busy looking at Mirabel who also looked back at him neither of them wanting this.
"As you wish Mama," Bruno said bowing his head.
"I assume you have a woman in mind?" Bruno asked deciding to not look at Mirabel any longer and just wanting to receive his just rewards.
"I have. Though it took me a while because you are just as difficult to find someone for as Mirabel." Abuela said still upset but easily keeping a layer of professionalism.
"Do you know how many women are your age and unmarried?" Abuela said showing her annoyance.
"Not a lot I imagine," Bruno replied nonchalantly.
"Barely any, so I made contact with all families for any marriageable women, but almost all of them didn't want to have you for their son-in-law or let their daughter marry you after what you've done to Mirabel or even just because of your bad reputation." Abuela said staring daggers at him. Bruno hung his head ready to accept his fate as Mirabel hugged herself and was crying in emotional pain at seeing her beloved Tio take the full blame from her once again and she was getting tired of him getting hurt because of her weakness.
"I agree to your terms mother and I promise to work hard as a Madrigal to help extend the family line and be a Madrigal that everyone can be proud of or generations," Bruno said as a vow standing tall and proud.
"I will hold you to that promise my son. So let me introduce you to your bride." Abuela said waving her arm behind her making Mirabel and Bruno both turn towards one of the entrances ready to watch a woman enter that will be a part of their future. But Mirabel's was interrupted as her wrist was grabbed and she was pulled roughly, Suddenly she was falling head first but her footing caught her and in just 3 steps she ran into a hard chest with a familiar scent as strong arms held up at her attack before they laid comfortingly on her shoulders. Mirabel knew it was him the moment she saw the green hourglass pattern and the familiar scent of warm sand, manly musk, and the Arepa con Queso he had for breakfast which made her stomach rumble in hunger.
Bruno watched the door but his reverie was broken when he heard three stomps before a head of curly black hair crashed into him which made him reach up to catch her instantly recognizing her by the papaya scented hair oil and rose oil perfume. Mirabel looked up at Bruno as he gazed down at her. Both separated before turning to face Abuela who looked at them with the same sternness.
"Mama?" Bruno said with confusion.
"Bruno you are hereby ordered to take this young girl as your bride," Alma announced instantly causing shouts from the audience.
"Yeah, let the freaks be together."
"Useless Madrigals."
"Lock them up in his tower."
"We don't need them."
The Madrigal family all stood still as they listened to the town turn against Bruno and Mirabel though none of them did anything except silently crying. Bruno held Mirabel closer as she cowered into his embrace letting everyone see.
"Sinners,"
"Curses,"
"Worst Madrigals,"
"Banish them."
Bruno shut his eyes as he too felt the pain, the same pain of rejection he had for years but now he felt it even more for his niece.
"Mother, you can banish me if you want But Mirabel is innocent. Please spare her." Bruno begged as he held Mirabel close while she trembled in fear.
"NO, both of you are still Madrigals and the two of you will work every day for the rest of your lives together to provide for this family both children and work," Alma said with a growl and a fierce look.
"But she is my niece," Bruno argued back.
"WELL, WHO ELSE CAN I TRUST TO TAKE CARE OF MY SUCCESSOR?" Alma yelled back among the shouting. But the moment she shouted that all noise in the room stopped and they all stared including the audience.
Mirabel went stiff with eyes opened wide.
"Wait, what did you just say?" Bruno asked incredulously. The rest of the family smiled and shook hands happily loving that the surprise went well.
"Mirabel is my successor as the next head of the Madrigal family and I can't trust her well-being to anyone else," Alma said as her face softened. Mirabel turned back towards her with shocked eyes.
"Abuela?" Mirabel asked.
"This new miracle was born because of you Mirabel. Who else would be as loving, accepting, understanding, and courageous than you? You are the perfect Madrigal to take my place." Alma said with the same smile of pride she had for Mirabel all those years ago before her gift ceremony.
"So me marrying her is because..." Bruno started as his heart was blossoming.
"Like I said. I have asked all of the eligible men and women if any of them wanted to marry either of you but every one of them told me no. But then we all noticed that as different as the 2 of you are individually, you both match well in a way I have never seen." Alma said making Bruno and Mirabel look up at each other after they had separated.
"But you never said she was to be the next head." a man shouted from the audience.
"Yea if we knew we might have said differently."
"I will marry her."
"No, I will."
"Take me as your husband, Mirabel."
"SILENCE." The father shouted making them all quiet down.
"Reason number 2 as to why I have approved of this arrangement," Alma said waving towards the audience who all sat down and watched while the doors opened and the Encanto woman all filed in making the men worried but when they all watched with happy smiles they knew they couldn't fight.
"Notice how they all cursed the both of you but the moment I let the knowledge out that I am choosing you as my successor they all want that kind of power. I can't trust just anyone with the love and care of a Madrigal woman with a future in leadership." Alma said happily making Bruno beam with pride.
"Imagine how proud I am that my son will be marrying the future head of the Madrigal's to protect the Encanto with love and family." She continued before looking out at the Audience
"I am sorry I tricked everyone, but I needed to be sure of what the future held. Mirabel is a gift, not only to the Madrigal family but to the Encanto as well, and she will lead us into a great future, I had to know that she will have a good man by her side to help her, take care of her, and help her take care of all of us." Abuela said with the sincerest apologies out towards the men who all looked ashamed at their actions while the women all looked at them with fierce faces. Because the men knew that Encanto was a woman driven world and when a woman makes a decision it is the law and The men's society is only there to take care of the women when their power was taken from them, just like what happened to Mirabel when her right to choose was taken the men of Encanto took charge of the man.
"So if we can have everyone's help we can prepare a Madrigal wedding to be proud of by the end of the week." Alma declared making the women flourish with happiness as blossoms flooded the room from a happy Isabela.
"Mama? Isn't that a bit soon?" Bruno said as Mirabel also came up.
"Nonsense. You two are already acting like a married couple and that child needs a father." Alma replied waving her arm behind Mirabel who turned to see Senora Guzman walk up the stage steps with Mateo.
"Oh, my baby." Mirabel cried gently taking the sleeping baby into her arms. Bruno also came up to see him.
"There is one final reason I am doing this," Abuela said loudly enough to catch everyone's attention she looked stern as she stared at them.
"Bruno, you aren't getting any younger and a young fertile bride like Mirabel will help bring us more Madrigal children quickly before you get too old, and I want to see you married and fathering my grandchildren before I die," Alma said before turning towards Pepa and Dolores. Bruno stood still as his face blushed while Mirabel also blushed deeply before laughing making Bruno clear his throat with a laugh as well.
