Chapter II
A melancholic tune whistled on the chilled winds blowing through the Land of Iron. The bright, burning celestial body in the sky, shined its light down on the land—its rays bouncing off the flakes of snow showering the earth in its white coat, creating a glistening landscape.
Inside the venue for the summit of the five Kage, the atmosphere was rather dreary by comparison. The room was occupied by all five Kage as well as their respective bodyguards, except Ao who was being replaced by Kiri's Anbu commander—codename: Oruka. Also present were the rookies sans: Naruto, Neji and Satsuki. They were there with the Senseis—Kakashi, Gai and Kurenai, the latter who left her daughter in the care of her friends—Yugao and Anko, not wanting little Mirai to witness this type of…event at such a young age. The last three occupants in the room to round out the unlikely group were the former members of Team Taka.
Despite the room having a fair number of occupants, most of whom were familiar with each other, it was deathly quiet for no one had anything they wanted to say. They were all there just waiting, morosely anticipating what was about to take place.
Like a ball of iron being fired from the barrel of a long tom, double doors swung open and slapped the cement walls, the loud bang travelling in waves throughout the large room. Marching into the room in perfect sync were two Samurai, donned out in their blue uniforms under their silver, segmented, plated armor. What came out behind them got the first reaction from the attendees.
Strapped and being wheeled out on a wooden gurney, dressed in an all-white ceremonial kimono, her smooth, raven hair done up in a single bun with two brown chopsticks and her pale, flawless face set in a monotone expression, was Satsuki Uchiha and today was the day she was due to be executed.
Watching as two more Samurai wheeled the Uchiha to the center of the room, the majority of the attendee's expression matched that of the Uchiha. The only exceptions being those from Konoha. While they were not vocal, it could be seen on their faces, the uneasy apprehension they were feeling and in Sakura's case, sadness from the fact that she was about to be all alone in Team Seven.
Most of them hadn't known the Uchiha outside of a few interactions before she betrayed them to Orochimaru, but the reality that they were about to witness someone their dearly departed blond friend fought so hard to make see the error of her ways and when she finally does, she gets executed, it made them silently ask what was the point of Naruto giving his life to save her if they were just going to kill her anyway.
The last living Uchiha in the entire Elemental Nations, looked on into the small crowd of people who were present to witness her last breath—the last set of faces she would ever get to see. She really would have liked to her ask herself the question: How did it come to this? But there was no point in that, for she knew the reason and that her closely approaching fate was her fault and hers alone.
After the war had officially ended and it was announced that their savior, Naruto had died by her hands, it didn't take long for the meager amount of trust she had garnered from the alliance to evaporate like a puddle on a hot summer's day. If it weren't the efforts of Konoha with some backing from Suna, she most certainly would have joined her blonde in the afterlife that very day. Whether she would be by his side in the clouds or forever doomed to always be looking up at him from the fire and brimstone below.
Not wanting Naruto's sacrifice to go to waste, Tsunade and Gaara proposed to have her locked up with her chakra completely sealed off, this way they had enough time to recuperate from the war and could thus plan a trial to see what her fate would be.
Upon a quick discussion from all five Kage, it was soon agreed upon that the best place to keep Satsuki would be the Hozuki Castle. This way they can minimize unrest by not having someone who was deemed a powerful war criminal too close to any of their villages.
To add another layer of security to the agreement, Ay made it so Satsuki would be kept in the Isolation Cell for the period of time she was kept there.
Being locked up in a cold, stone cell for an entire five months, gave her a lot of time to think about her life. From the night that her brother laid waste to her family, the only thing that kept her going was her vengeful desire to watch that monster take his last breath. Her eyes were so blinded by her rage that she refused to see the fatal mistakes she was making by betraying the village, betraying her friends, betraying Naruto.
If she could go back in time, she would slap as much sense into her younger self as she possibly could. Thinking back on her actions against Itachi and the man that ordered Itachi to wipe out the clan—Danzo Shimura, it made her realize that Kakashi was right.
"For those who follow the path of revenge…it never ends well. You'll only tear yourself apart…And even if you succeed and get your revenge, what will you have then…nothing…emptiness."
"So, it looks like neither of us has led a charmed life exactly, have we? Still, we're not all that bad off. At least you and I have found new comrades to help fill the void."
As much as she didn't want to admit it back then, she had what she always wanted in Team Seven—A family. Sakura—the annoying younger Sister with her head in the clouds. Kakashi—the creepy but badass Uncle, who could be equal parts frustrating and fun to be around. And Naruto—the one person who could understand her for who she was and not what her trauma turned her into.
But because she couldn't see past her revenge, because she refused to allow them to help her, she threw them away and ended up with the exact feeling Kakashi said she would have.
Emptiness.
Only difference was that this emptiness came with a heaping chunk of shame and regret, and now…it was too late to fix anything.
Naruto was dead.
No one trusted her.
And she was about to pay the ultimate price for her crimes.
The only consolation, if it even could be called that, was that they decided that her execution was going to be quick and painless. A leniency earned for her actions in helping to end the war.
Walking in front of her, clad in his green Samurai armor, head wrapped with white bandages and his Kurosawa strapped at his side, was Mifune.
"Satsuki Uchiha. For your attempted assassination of the leaders of the Five Great Villages, the murder of Naruto Uzumaki and the many other crimes you have committed across the Elemental Nations, you have been given the penalty of death."
The aged Samurai paused and looked at her, his eyes taking one last look at the young lady who let hate and revenge lead her down a path of no return.
"Do you have any last words?"
It was all his fault.
At least that's what his guilt kept telling him. Logically speaking, Kakashi knew that he was not responsible for Satsuki's actions. She was her own person and thus responsible for herself.
But.
She was his student and he failed her. From the very moment he was introduced to the lone survivor of the Uchiha, he knew where her priorities were, that the only thing that kept her going was her desire for revenge. As her Sensei it was his duty to curb her lust for vengeance so that it wouldn't consume who she was.
He wouldn't be afraid to admit that he saw a lot of his younger self in her back then. The anger he felt at Rin's death which led to him becoming a cold and ruthless killer during his time in Anbu, it was the same type of rage that was driving Satsuki's bloodlust.
Admittedly and regrettably, that's why he had favored her so much over Naruto and Sakura. He felt the need to focus on her so that she would see the importance in friends and camaraderie, to see that despite losing her family, that there were still people who cared about her and that her life would improve if she allowed those people in.
But he failed and now he had to live the rest of his life with the death of his Sensei's son and his ultimate failure as a sensei on his conscience.
Opening his eyes, he saw Mifune looking at Satsuki before he heard him ask.
"Do you have any last words?"
'Stupid Child!'
Despite having a monotone outward appearance, on the inside, Tsunade was fuming. As much as she loathe to admit it, looking at the Uchiha who was about to lose her life because she refused to stop living in the past, reminded her too much of herself.
For years Tsunade had let her past trauma and loss of loved ones dictate the person who she became—a bitter, cynical, hate filled, old woman who looked down others for merely pursuing their dream. If Naruto had not come into her life and slapped some sense into her, she knew without a doubt that she would still be that coward who ran away from her past that he found in a bar, drinking and gambling her life away.
Looking at the Uchiha, she could see every single emotion being hidden behind those dead, monotone eyes.
Grief.
Sorrow.
Self-loathing.
Shame.
Regret.
It was like looking at a different version of herself. One where all of Naruto's efforts to save her only ended up going to waste.
She tried, Kami knows she tried to keep Satsuki alive so that her Otouto's sacrifice wasn't in vain, but she failed. Ay, Mei and Onoki all unanimously agreed that despite being a great asset during the war and could possibly be rehabilitated to help enforce the peace they fought so hard to achieve, it was too much of a risk to let someone with that much power and an ever shifting allegiance between the light and the dark roam free.
She argued that Naruto—the person who made it possible for them to be alive in the first place, gave his life to save the Uchiha from her darkness, and that if he were alive, he would want her to be given a second chance.
That was when Gaara finally spoke, and his words were those that sealed the fate of the wayward Uchiha.
"Hokage-sama, as much I would like to agree with you, I'm afraid that I cannot. I for one do believe in second chances for I am a product of being given a second chance but in a case such as this, the cons are too heavy to be ignored for the pros."
Tsunade knew that the points he was making were more than valid, but she held fast in her goal to keep Satsuki alive. "But Gaara, Naruto's your friend. He's the one who gave you your second chance, both of them! It's only right to have Satsuki get another chance to prove that she is more than what her past turned her into."
Gaara intertwined his fingers in front of his face and sighed. "Yes, Naruto was my friend and I will always be loyal to him and the convictions he left behind, but the fact still remains that Satsuki Uchiha is too much of a danger to the peace that he fought so hard to obtain."
Before Tsunade could make a rebuttal, he continued. "If we do let her go and she shows that she has changed her ways for the better, all it would take is one bad day, just one for all of that to come crashing down. And Kami forbid she then decides to go through with her revolution, as much as we may not like to admit it, there would be nothing that the entire might of our nations could do to stop her."
Tsunade bit her lip in frustration for she knew that he was right.
"It is for that reason that I—Gaara, the Fifth Kazekage, vote for Satsuki Uchiha to be put to death."
That was the end of the discussion. At the very least she succeeded in getting them to agree that the execution should be quick and painless, that Sastuki had at the very least earned that mercy.
"Do you have any last words?"
Pulled from her thoughts by the question, Tsunade refocused her eyes on the Uchiha.
"Do you have any last words?"
Such a simple question yet so difficult to answer. She stopped looking at the Samurai General and refocused her gaze on the crowd. So many faces, so many people she hurt in her pursuit of vengeance. Her gaze came to the front of the audience and her breath hitched in her throat. It was Naruto, his body all bruised, bloody and beaten, a fist sized hole in his torso and his right arm missing and the stump looking like a mangled mess.
"N…Naruto." She whispered.
Mifune heard her and followed her gaze. 'There's nothing there.'
Naruto just stared at her—cerulean blue eyes that used to be filled with the determination to make her see right from wrong, were now filled with nothing but disappointment.
Satsuki's stoic demeanor finally cracked and a stream of tears began flowing from her eyes. She hung her head and silently muttered just loud enough for them to hear. "I'm sorry."
With her last words uttered, Mifune gave her a parting message. "I hope your soul finds peace." Before stepping away from her. "Tsuchikage-sama, it is time."
"Hmm." The old Kage floated from his position among the crowd and hovered a few feet away from Satsuki.
The last Uchiha didn't see as Onoki slowly went through his hand-seals.
She didn't see when his Jinton: Genkai Hakuri no Jutsu formed between his palms.
She didn't see when it propelled toward her and expanded, trapping her inside.
What she did see, was Naruto closing his eyes and looking away before fading from existence.
Closing her eyes, she muttered to herself these final words. "I'm sorry, Naruto." Before another second could pass, she was disintegrated from the mortal plane.
How long had it been since she died? A few minutes? An hour? A day? A week? In a place such as this— an empty space vacant of any form of light, a perception of time was non-existent.
When she was executed, a small part of her hoped that she would end up in heaven where she knew without a doubt Naruto would be, but the logical part of her knew that she was destined for the burning underworld.
But neither of those happened. Instead she woke up in this dark endless void where she was the only one present. With no need to eat and being unable to sleep, the only thing Satsuki could do was think. It should come to no surprise that all she could think about was Naruto—more specifically, his confession.
What would it have been like had she gone back with him on her retrieval mission? How would things have played out?
"Since when do you come up here?"
Not even bothering to turn around, Satsuki kept looking out at the infinite amount of stars decorating the night sky from her perch on the Yondaime's monument. "Since I found out it was a good place to clear my head." She heard his footsteps approach before she felt him take a seat next to her. "When did you get back?"
"This afternoon."
Out of the corner of her eyes she gave him an accusatory side-glance. "And you just thought to come see me now?"
He rubbed the back of his head in his typical sheepish manner. It seems that three years of training with Master Jirayia hadn't changed him all that much, aside from the obvious physical changes. Even with him sitting, she could tell that he had gotten taller than her, and if the way his outfit hugged his physique was anything to go by, he wasn't the scrawny twig he used to be either.
"Sorry. I had to check in with Obaa-chan and ended up getting dragged to Ichiraku by Konohamaru and his friends."
"Hn. Glad to see that I'm the last of your priorities. I'd have thought that checking in with your best friend would be somewhere near the top."
He chuckled and pulled her into a hug, one she was all but eager to return. "I missed you, ya know."
"Same here, Dobe. Village was a little too quiet with you gone."
They stayed there in the embrace for some time, both of them just enjoying each other's company.
"There's something that I've been meaning to say to you, Satsuki-chan."
Removing her head from his chest, she leaned back and looked directly into his eyes. "And what's that?"
Before she could comprehend what was happening, his lips found hers. Onyx eyes widened in surprise before they softened and she started returning the kiss. What started as a slow, passionate kiss soon became fervent and heated. She repositioned herself so she was sitting in his lap, one hand went behind his head, her fingers combing through his soft blonde mane while the other went around his neck. She could feel one of his hands wrapped around her flank while the other was resting on her hip.
Satsuki moaned into the kiss and soon found her lower body gyrating on his. Before their make-out session could go any further, she felt him pull back. She would be lying if she said she wasn't disappointed at lack of contact on her lips. She knew that her face was resembling her favorite food but at this point she didn't care. "Not that I'm complaining, but what was that for."
He smiled and gently rested his forehead against hers, his nose rubbing against hers. "That was me telling you that I always feel happy when I'm around you, that when you're there with me; I feel like I could take on the whole world and win. That was me telling you that no matter what happens I will always be there for you because Satsuki Uchiha, I love you."
The Uchiha felt the corners of her lips twitching before she finally allowed the bright smile to spread across her face. Not being someone who was particularly good with words, she responded in the only way she knew—by resuming their passionate liplock. After the need for air became too much to ignore, they separated.
"I guess the feeling's mutual, then?"
Her head resting on her spot on his chest, she responded. "What do you think? Also, did you have to make your confession sound so cheesy?"
He laughed and told her. "Gimme a break, you know how long it took me to remember all of that?"
She gave him a quick peck on the lips. "Write it down next time."
The sounds of a newborn's wail filled the delivery room. Satsuki lay on the bed, sweat dripping from her face and heavy pants coming from her mouth.
"Congratulations, Satsuki. You have a beautiful baby girl." Tsunade smiled as she handed the newborn to her mother. "Shizune, go get Naruto."
Satsuki wasn't paying attention to them, only the beautiful baby in her arms. Little Mikoto. She and Naruto agreed that if they had a girl first, then she'd be named after her mother.
"WAAAAAAAAH!"
Her little girl sure had a pair of lungs on her, something in the future she would attribute to her loudmouth husband, though he would come with the counter argument that she was way louder than him when it came to certain activities.
Taking out one of her breast, she put it in the little girl's mouth and immediately the siren like wail subsided. A tired smile appeared on her face when she felt her husband's hand snake around her shoulder and when he pulled her in for a kiss on the cheek.
"How ya doing?"
"Tired and sore. I swear taking out the Akatsuki was a cake-walk compared to childbirth."
"Don't worry. I hear it comes easier with practice."
If the glare she sent her blonde lover could kill, he'd be dead a million times over.
"Hey, hey, don't give me that look. I'm not the one who said she wanted three kids."
Her glare faltered before she sighed and laid her head on the pillow. "Just make sure you put twins in me next time. If I have to go through this two more times, then I am going to kill you. One and done, got it?"
He laughed before replying. "I'll be sure to give it the good old Uzumaki try."
Rolling her eyes, she went back to admiring the life she just birthed.
"She's got your hair." She heard Naruto comment. It was at that moment Little Mikoto opened her eyes. "And my eyes."
"A perfect mix, I would say."
Naruto nodded. "Yeah. How bout we go for a switch up next time. I'd love to see what a blonde Uchiha looks like."
Satsuki gave him her best deadpan expression. "Listen to me carefully. There will never be…a blond Uchiha."
He grinned. "Wanna bet?"
Cooking was something Satsuki rather enjoyed. For one, she got to show off her unmatched culinary skills, and second, it reminded her of the times she spent cooking with her mother. Feeling a weight on her back and two hands wrapping around her midsection, Satsuki smiled. "You're home early, Nanadaime-sama."
A pleasure filled shiver went down her spine when she felt him nip her earlobe. "How many times have I told you that you don't have to call me that?" The husky whisper making it difficult to focus on her task.
"Too many to count. Light day at the office today?"
"Not really. Felt like coming home early, so I left some clones to cover for me."
She shook her head in amusement. "Only you would abuse your clones like that."
"I don't hear you complaining about the other way I use them."
Even without looking over her shoulder she could see the shit-eating grin on his face. Pouting with her cheeks flushed, she bumped him off with her butt.
Playfully, Naruto grabbed her and twirled her around before capturing her lips with his.
Eagerly returning the kiss, Satsuki wrapped her arms around his neck and melted into the liplock.
They stayed like that for a few minutes well, lips locked and tongues dancing between their mouths. They only stopped when their kids came running into the kitchen.
"Daddy, Daddy, Daddy's home."
Letting each other go, Satsuki scooped up her five year old Mikoto while Naruto took up the four year old twins: Itachi and Minato. Both of them being carbon copies of their father having inherited his blonde hair, the only difference being that they inherited their mother's eyes. When they were born she had to resist the urge to slap the smug expression off Naruto's face. She had to concede that despite being blonde, her two boys were just as adorable as their older sister and she wouldn't change a thing about them.
"Daddy, what were you and Mommy doing?" It was Itachi who asked, angelic innocence in his words. Everyone's attention was now on Naruto. Satsuki found it funny how sweat was comically dripping off his face.
"U-uh. Mommy and I were uh…just talking. Yeah, talking."
The little blonde tilted his head. "But Daddy, it looked an awful lot like the stuff that Uncle Scarecrow reads when he's here."
"HE WHAT?!" Came the simultaneous exclamations from both parents.
It was at that moment that moment Satsuki was reminded that she was still cooking dinner when she smelled the unmistakable scent of burnt food.
She looked at the stove and yep, the food was burnt. Throbbing tick mark on her forehead and an eyebrow that was about to twitch its way off her face, she sent a glare at her husband who distracted her from her cooking.
He in turn laughed sheepishly before nervously suggesting. "Eh…Ichiraku Ramen anyone?"
Almost immediately the three children erupted into cheers. Her annoyed gaze softened and turned into a look of defeat. Their kids just had to get their father's appetite, didn't they?
After tucking in their children, Satsuki stood in the room with her husband, a content smile on her face. She turned to her husband, standing on her tiptoes, she pecked him on the cheek.
He looked at her. "Not that I'm complaining but what was that for?"
"That was me thanking you for giving me a chance to show that I'm more than what I used to be."
He grinned. "No problem."
"For a dead person with such an…unsavory life resume, your hopes and fantasies are rather sweet. I dare say I got myself a sweet tooth just from watching them."
Immediately getting to her feet and into a defensive stance, Satsuki looked into the pitch blackness, trying to locate who spoke. "Who are you and what do you want from me?"
She heard the voice chuckle. "Who I am should be rather obvious given the circumstances."
After those word the Uchiha realized who she was speaking to. "You're….the Shinigami."
"Bingo. As for what I want, well that's another conversation all to itself. But first…"
Satsuki heard the sound of fingers snapping before the black void brightened and morphed into an urban dining room.
Seated around the table with a cup of coffee in his hand was who she assumed was the Shinigami. A man with messy, light blonde hair with strands framing the sides of his face and hanging between his eyes. He wore a dark green Shihakushō underneath a black Haori. On his feet were tradition wooden sandals and on his head was a striped dark green and white bucket hat. Leaning on the side of the table was a yellow hooked cane.
Satsuki couldn't stop her eyebrow from raising. "You're the Shinigami?"
"That I am, little lady. Now why don't you pull out a chair and take a seat. We have something to discuss."
And thus ends the second chapter. Hope y'all like it. I'm sure you all know who that Shinigami is at the end there. :)
Now let me clear up something that I believe may cause confusion.
When Tsunade told Gaara that Naruto gave him both of his second chances. She's referring to when Naruto spared Gaara during the invasion in the Chunin Exam Arc. By doing this and showing him a better way to live his life, Gaara was given a second chance to be more than what his father turned him into.
The second time was when Naruto went to rescue Gaara from the Akatsuki and was the reason why Chiyo was able revive him. With Naruto doing that, he gave Gaara a second chance to live his life.
For those wondering what a long tom is, it's just another word for a Cannon.
By the way, Oruka is the japanese word for Orca. Figured it was a good fit for the Kiri Anbu Commander.
For those wondering why I went with Onoki being the one to execute Satsuki, he's the only one with a technique that kills quickly, is painless and doesn't leave a mess. Plus they got rid of the body entirely, thus erasing the possibility of someone getting to the corpse for the DNA or her eyes.
If ya have any questions feel free to ask me. I'll do my best to get back to ya.
Laterz.
