I've Changed My Mind: A Chip N Dale Fanfic
1990
It all started one spring night in 1990 during a season wrap for me and Dale's show "The Rescue Rangers" on Disney Afternoon. I was delivering some cake to Dale in his trailer.
"Hey, where'd you run off to, buddy?" I asked, entering Dale's trailer. "I saved you a piece of cake."
Then, I noticed Dale putting up a poster. I just couldn't see what it was.
"Hey, what's that?" I asked.
"Okay," said Dale. "I wasn't gonna show you this right now, but it just got delivered. So…"
Dale revealed to me a poster of him dressed as a secret agent.
"TA-DAH!"
I chuckled. "Double-O-Dale? That's hilarious. What is it exactly?"
Dale couldn't hold in his excitement. "It's wild, right? It's my new show! I'm gonna be a super spy!"
I gasped in horror! Dale never told me that… until now.
"Whu? What are you talking about?" I asked.
"I'm really going for it, Chip. And like you always say: 'The biggest risk is not taking any risk at all'."
"Wait, you really have a new show? For real?" I couldn't hold back my negative emotions.
"Yep!"
"Why didn't you talk to me about it first? We tell each other everything! You've even told me what you had for lunch the last 42 days."
"Pineapple pizza and a diet Slice," said Dale, remembering.
"Exactly!"
"I don't know, Chip. I just wanted to make sure the show was gonna happen first, before I got my hopes up."
Wait, what?!
"My hopes up? What?"
"Yeah, it's good news for everyone! Check out my new dance."
Dale did a dance he thought was cool. I'm not amused.
"Dale, I just… If you do this, ABC might cancel the show."
"No, they won't do that. I mean, everyone knows you're the favorite. And I'm just the one who you hit me in the head with a pipe each week. It's fine."
"You're gonna risk all of 'Rescue Rangers' just because I'm a little more popular than you? Don't you get how dumb that is?"
Dale let out a sigh. "Well, I am the dumb one."
Oops! Wrong message.
"Sorry, I didn't mean it like that."
"I know, you never mean it. Look, Chip, you're always acting like you saved me or something. But when we were kids, we were in it together."
"Come on, we're still in it together."
"Sorry, Chip. I'm just done being the second banana."
"But you're not the second banana. I'm a banana and you're just the other one. Two bananas."
Before Dale could respond to that, his phone rang. I glared at Dale.
"Don't even think about it, don't get that."
"That could be my agent, Dave Bolinari."
Dale steps over to the phone.
"After everything I've done for you, do NOT pick up that phone."
"I…"
"Dale, stop!"
I then gave Dale the pouty Bambi eyes.
"Please…"
Dale lowered his head for a second. Then, he made a straight face, and answered the phone.
"Go for Dale."
Tears came out of my eyes. I started to leave the trailer, until…
"Dave, I'm not doing 'Double-O-Dale'."
I stopped. I then turned to Dale in shock.
"Yeah, it seemed like a good idea at first," Dale said to his agent. Then he turned to me with a smile. "But I think I'll stick to 'The Rescue Rangers' for a while. A long while."
Finally, I smiled and teared up a little more.
After Dale talked to his agent, he approached me, feeling embarrassed. But I couldn't help but hug him tight.
"Thank you," I said.
"Yeah, well," said Dale. "I was thinking about what you've said just now, and… I didn't wanna lose you as a friend."
I sniffed. "Well, I would've quit Hollywood if you took the chance and sell insurance. But I guess I don't have to worry about that. Thank you, Dale."
"No hard feelings, right?"
"We're cool, Dale. We're cool. Come on, let's have some cake and go home. You know… I think 'Double-O-Dale' would make a good new episode for 'Rescue Rangers'."
"I have never thought of that."
Should I continue this what if story? If so, let me hear your ideas. The new Chip N Dale movie is out now on Disney Plus. Go see it!
