Here she is. Nice and long! Thank you Minion of Solitude for some great ideas! Thank you to everyone who has reviewed =)
The next day Jane was humming absentmindedly while using the printer. Frost walked in and looked at her like she had three heads. Jane hardly noticed.
"Hay I know that song. Anyway way you want it by Journey right?" Frost asked inquisitively.
Jane swung around with a dumbstruck look. "Huh?"
"You were humming… so who's the lucky guy?" Frost teased.
Jane rolled her eyes then gathered her papers. "His name's Nunya," Jane said with a fake excited voice.
"Nunya?"
"Nunya business" she clarified.
"Ho don't get all defensive about it. I've just never seen you this happy at" Frost squinted at his computer. "Eight in the morning. You usually start the day with a few complaints about the terrible coffee in the cafeteria followed by either a complaint about all the morons on the road or something your mother said"
Jane huffed but she was lowkey taken aback by how well Frost had gotten to know her over the years. "Fine. The coffee sucks. Not one but two morons cut in front of me on the way over and I haven't talked to my mother yet but I'm sure I'll have something for you by lunch" Jane quipped.
Frost just shook his head. Later that day Maura called everyone down to the garage to discuss what CSRU found in the victim's car.
This is the first time Jane's seen the doctor since the previous night. Maura was wearing her navy blue overalls and was leaning over the exposed Engin. Korsak and Frost followed behind her.
"Faulty oxygen sensors account for many check engine light-related issues however this one had been purposefully tampered with. I found numerous issues within the transmission alone which could have resulted in potentially catastrophic failures. But the victim would not have known about them until it was too late since the check engine light had been disjointed" Maura stated.
Just as professional as ever. Not missing a beat. like nothing happened in the office a few feet away.
"Could someone without a lot of knowledge about cars have done this?" Frost asked. "Hypothetically of course" He added, knowing how the doctor feels about making speculations, even educated ones.
"I am not at liberty to speculate on whether someone without sufficient knowledge 'could have' successfully tampered with it but I will say that there are numerous wires within the same space and it's more likely that someone with knowledge of the vehicle would have managed it," Maura said, her gaze landing on Jane who was more quiet than usual.
Korsak's brow furrowed and he shared a look with Frost. Usually, this is the part where Jane would point out that the killer had been trying to murder the victim for a while but finally grew impatient.
"I'll bring the victim's mechanic in for questioning. Got anything to add Jane?" Korsak finnally asked.
Jane jerked her head in Korsak's direction "Um… yes. We should check the wife's browser history too just in case. She could have researched how to disable it... Did CSRU get any usable prints from the car that didn't belong to the victim?"
Maura started moving toward the lab. Jane stood for a moment before following behind her. "A few. Some belonged to his wife, Stacy Collman. We're still running the others through AFIS" Maura said as she came to a standstill behind Susie in the lab.
"Hello, Detective Rizzoli" Susie greeted.
"Hello, senior Criminalist Chang" Jane greeted back as per their usual semi-awkward greetings. Maura's brow furrowed watching the interaction.
"I ran the skin from under his fingernails through CODIS. No match, your suspect is not in any criminal database" Maura said before retreating to her office. Jane followed once more.
She halted once she entered her office and looked back at Jane who switch her gaze between the space by Maura's desk and the Doctor. "I have no further information for you detective. I am going to change back into my dress now," she said, already in pursuit of her personal bathroom.
Jane's eyes widened. That was definitely not an invitation- was it? Stop it you perv. Oh god, I need coffee. Jane practically screamed internally as she turned and walked out of the Doctors office. She willed the thoughts of the doctors' state of undress out of her mind.
Did last night even happen? Am I going insane? Yes and yes Jane answered herself as she flopped into a chair at the cafe for lunchtime later that day.
"Jaaane" Angela sang, waving her hand in front of her delirious daughter's face. Jane shook her head and zoomed in on the coffee pot her mother was holding.
"Gimmie," Jane said, stretching both arms out toward it.
"What's the matter with you today?" Angela asked curiously, holding the coffee pot out of Jane's reach.
"Withdrawals for starters" she quipped, eying the dark liquid that's practically calling her name. It's not like she hadn't had coffee today. In fact, this would make her third cup.
Angela rolled her eyes and poured the coffee, Jane's eyes practically sparkled at the sight. She took a long soothing sip. "Hi, doctor Isles. Can I get you a veggie wrap to eat here today?" Angela asked warmly looking behind Jane. She started coughing due to the coffee going down the wrong hole.
Maura had taken her lunch to go every day since she started working at BPD. Jane turned around to find Maura back in her yellow dress and heels. "Thank you Angela but I prefer to take my lunch to go," Maura said hurriedly.
Thank you? Of course, her mother would be the exception to the doctors' unique bedside manner, Jane thought to herself.
"Oh come on. You girls could have lunch together, talk about work stuff" Angela said already on her way to get Maura's lunch. Maura opened her mouth to speak, she looked like she was already deeply regretting having ever pushed the lobby button on the elevator.
Jane twirled the coffee cup in her hand and gave Maura a nervous smile.
"Did you know that most cars honk in the key of 'F'?" Maura asked as she took the seat in front of Jane, crossing her legs as she did so.
"Huh. What do they do when they're out of tune? Do they get a tune-up?" Jane raised her brow playfully. Waiting awkwardly for the pun to sink in.
Maura just looked at her pointedly. "I'm afraid if you're waiting for a sign of amusement, you would be waiting for a while. I've only ever laughed at one pun in particular, but that was years ago and sometimes I wonder if I was merely overly tired that day."
"It was quite clever I must say" she adds with the corner of her mouth just barely forming into a smile.
Jane's natural curiosity and borderline obsession with trying to make this woman laugh, kicked into overdrive. "You've seriously only ever laughed at one pun?!" Are you a cyborg? You can tell me, Jane thought.
Maura's irritation with questions that had already been answered was starting to shine through. "That's what I said," She said slowly.
"What was it?" Jane asked trying not to sound overly invested.
"Wouldnt you like to know.-"
"Here you go" Angela interrupted, sliding two plates with wraps in front of them.
Angela smiled an accomplished smile at them both. "I wanted a burger" Jane wined.
"This is healthier. It's not vegetarian Jane just eat the chicken wrap" Angela said before turning on her heel and stopping by another table.
The rest of the lunch was spent in silence mostly. Jane was burning to talk about the previous night if only to confirm it ever really happened. For her sanity's sake. Though they couldn't very well talk about it, sitting in a Cafe filled with their colleagues in blue, could they?
Maura left the last bite of her wrap on the plate and slid a piece of paper across the table.
"My address in Beacon Hill. Be there at 7 tonight?" She asked if you could call asking.
Jane chewed hurriedly, eying the piece of paper. "Mkay," she said with a mouthful.
Maura rolled her eyes as she left the Cafe.
The day seemed to drag on forever but came to an abrupt end at the same time. Before long Jane found herself shutting her car door outside Maura's home. The sun was on its last hour of daylight, leaving a pink glow in the sky.
Jane turned on the porch, looking at the pink illumination, and took a deep breath to calm her nerves. Nothing would surprise her at this point regarding the contents of Maura's house. The souls of the last poor bastards who tried to have any kind of relationship with her in test tubes, check? Literal human skeletons for decor, check?
"You're four minutes late" Maura stated after opening the door.
Jane fought the urge to offer an excuse or apologize and decided she'd better find that backbone that seemed to put up a 'not back in five minutes' sign every time she's in the doctor's presence. "Oh no. Gosh, you must've waited around in agony. Four minutes you say?" she uttered sarcastically.
Maura gave her a brief glare as she walked toward her dining room table. The place was like something straight out of a catalog. It hardly looked lived in. So neat. Clean. Probably sterile too. Not exactly homey but it's not exactly a dragonslayer either.
Jane took the seat next to the head of the table before Maura could tell her to.
Two leather binders were positioned neatly on the table along with pretentious-looking pens and even a pitcher with room temp water and glasses. If Jane didn't know any better she would think this was a lawyers' set-up.
"Let's begin," Maura said as she sat at the head of the table. Jane moves to open the binder when Maura's hand stopped her.
"Jane," she said softly. For the first time since she's met the doctor, she sees hesitation and maybe even doubt in Maura's eyes. Jane looks down at her hand under Maura's in confusion. Maura quickly removes her hand.
"Before you open that. I need to be clear with you." Maura clasps her hands together. "I intend to offer you a position that would be more consuming than any relationship you've ever been in. Romantic or otherwise"
Jane swallows.
"I've had numerous disappointments in the past. I don't see the benefit of wasting either one's time so I am taking a rather direct approach with you. Could you realistically see yourself participating?" Maura quipped.
Jane cleared her throat and looked back down at the contract. "You mentioned a contract. Those involve some compromises for both parties, right?" Jane asked more collectedly than even she expected.
Maura looked slightly intrigued. "It's true. Before signing we would go through every aspect of it. Adding and subtracting details as we see fit" Maura stated.
Jane smiled. We "Then let's do that, and I'll tell you then if I could see myself 'participating'"
Maura pursed her lips slightly in thought before nodding and opening the binder. Jane followed her lead.
The contract was definitely the work of a lawyer. Jane could see that at first glance. Thank god for discretion and attorney-client privilege. If anyone found out she was even considering signing a contract of this nature with the Chief Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth Jane would probably flee to Guam in the same day.
Gah, what would Ma say? Jane asked herself as she read the first paragraph. Safeword? She swallowed away the emotion that was building up in her throat and asked Maura question after question.
Her prudish nature toward sex mixed with her ignorance regarding this new world of Maura's was resulting in a rather flushed Detective. Jane pushed on. Stuttering here and there and reached for her water hurriedly every so often. Maura brought her hand to her mouth, containing her laughter quite well throughout the process.
Jane got a more detailed picture of who Maura Isles is through this document than working with her for two months ever did. Some things she knew already. Detail-oriented, organized, commanding… controlling?. "Sheesh," Jane says bringing her finger to the text.
"Subject will adhere to a diet consisting of various nutrient-rich foods and follow a fitness program? Who are you the NSA? What am I gonna be hopping fences and stealing secretes for you, what is this?" she asked, ending with a nervous giggle.
A look of confusion crossed Maura's face. "Don't be ridiculous"
"I'm joking. But seriously" Jane muttered the last bit.
"One's diet reflects the ultimate… taste in the body. Bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase: you are what you eat" Maura said simply. Jane pushed her thighs together subconsciously under the table.
"And I don't think you would have any trouble working out. You obviously maintain your figure quite well already" she said looking Jane up and down slowly. Jane cleared her throat again, watching Maura's wondering eyes.
"I recommend running as I enjoy doing myself. I also work in an hour of yoga every day which strengthens the body. Allowing one to surrender to various positions later on" Maura continued, twirling her pen on the table.
Jane willed the images of all the 'positions' Maura must have mastered over the years, away.
She hated running. Found it to be pointless and boring. But she got an idea. "Maybe we could run… together?"
Maura's hand seised the movements with her pen. Silence. Then "Fine" she uttered as if succumbing to a fate slightly worse than death. Jane didn't get the impression that Muara did anything with another person besides the obvious.
She couldn't help but smile a sly smile returning her focus to the document.
"I gotta wax my bush now?! Hard pass" Jane said in astonishment, looking at clause 3 section B.
Maura sighed and looked at Jane. "Removing pubic hair increases sexual sensation resulting in a more pleasurable experience. Not to mention the numerous other benefits regarding dressing, hygiene, and aesthetic. And nowhere in this document does it suggest waxing your vagina, Jane."
Jane mulled it over. Increases sexual sensation. She couldn't help but think of all the sensations the doctor is probably more than capable of producing.
"And if you had bothered to read on before your outburst, you would have noted that the dominant" Maura said gesturing to herself "would provide the submissive" she added, gesturing to Jane "with laser hair removal appointments. Which is painless, more efficient than any other hair removal method, and doesn't result in any razor burn or discomfort" Maura said matter of factly.
Jane hummed in thought. "My outburst," she said in a mocking tone resulting in a scolding look from Maura. "I'll think about it hows that?"
"I'll be waiting for your reply in suspense until then," Maura said dryly.
"Is that sarcasm I detect, doctor?" Jane teased.
Maura reached for her glass."Quite the detective you are"
Jane smiled a sly smile at Maura's words and returned her focus to the binder. Two themes seemed to intertwine throughout the paragraphs. Pain and pleasure. Is she a sadist? Jane asked herself but she couldn't deny the sudden throbbing between her legs.
Jane had never been spanked nor did she see herself enjoying the sensation in a sexual setting. A new thought had Jane all but vibrating in her seat. Has anyone ever spanked Maura? Could she take it as well as she could dish it out?
"Clause 6 section a" Jane said.
"I'm listening," Maura responded, pen in hand.
"Has anyone ever done this to you?" Jane said pointing to the sext. "Taken you over their knee… and spanked you?" Jane asked cautiously. She couldn't help it, the thought alone was doing a number on her lace fabric down below.
"No. I do not reciprocate section A of Clause six. That is for the subject's pleasure, not mine" Maura stated. "I do however take pleasure in inducing the sensation" she added.
"But have you ever tried it with someone?" Jane asked before she could stop herself. Though she knew the answer to her own question already.
"No. But I also don't need to part take in the use of methamphetamine to know that it's not for me either. Can we move on detective?" Maura snapped.
Jane held her hands up surrenderingly.
It was pretty apparent throughout the continuation of the document that Maura thrived on control. A lot of the activities involved her on top. Jane nearly gasped out loud at the thought of Maura riding her face in the near future.
It seemed surreal. That this woman, who captured Jane's interest unconditionally from day one, would want her. Fine. She literally said it's not a romantic 'arrangement' in any sense of the word but still. Maura wanted Jane. If only to scratch an itch. And scratch she will.
If someone had told Jane a month ago that she, a straight, cocky, empowered woman, that she would practically be drooling over the thought of being used for the pleasure of the Chief medical examiner, who is a woman, she would probably charge them right then and there.
Jane herself thrived on control. In her work. Her personal life. In the bedroom especially. It had been the cause for many failed relationships. Most of the men she dated loathed taking a backseat in the bedroom. She did too.
Until two words erased what Jane thought she knew about herself. 'Kneel here'.
Maura was right about one thing. Merely reading this document has already consumed Jane more than any relationship ever has and she loved it. Sure it was confusing, foreign, and downright scary. But she knew she couldn't turn back now.
"No kissing?" Jane read softly. She looked at Maura in search of clarification.
"Too personal" Maura stated.
Um. Too personal? Jane just read about vaginal fisting on the previous page but a kiss is 'too personal'?
"What about a compromise?" Jane asked in her best business tone of voice.
Maura sat back in her chair and crossed her arms. "I don't kiss, Jane"
"I will uncross vaginal fisting for one kiss," Jane said confidently.
"Not three minutes ago you went into horrific detail of how you have no intention of being split into two like a walnut, I believe you said and now you wish to reconsider… for one kiss?" Maura asked in disbelief.
"Granted, I don't want anyone sticking their entire hand inside of me like they're digging for spare change but you seemed really annoyed that I crossed it off so this is my offer. Take it or leave it" Now Jane sat back and crossed her arms.
She would throw in nipple clamps too if it would sweeten the deal for the doctor. The thought of never getting to kiss Maura even though they're doing everything else you could imagine was downright horrific.
Who doesn't kiss? Jane is becoming aware of the fact that she would probably end up with more questions than answers the more time she spent with this woman.
Maura's demeanor softened. Did it work? Did Jane's confident persistence penetrate the barriers even little?
"I'm afraid I wouldn't be any good at it. I haven't kissed anyone in quite some time" Maura said softly.
"All the same. I'd like to determine that for myself and share my findings with you, doctor" Jane teased. Maura gets particularly annoyed when Jane talks in the way she does. Or when she teases her in general.
But Maura just smiled a small smile. The first real smile for the day if Jane isn't mistaken. Her heart skips a beat at the sight.
"Then I accept," Maura said, returning her expression to a serious one.
Jane smiled a dimpled smile.
"And you'll find vaginal fisting to be quite thrilling I assure you," Maura said with a smirk.
Don't remind me what I agreed to, Jane thought. "Can't wait" she said with a fake smile.
She continued through the contract and a single word seemed to jump out at her off the page. It had Jane's entire body vibrating with terror. She dramatically crossed it out and uttered "Hard limit"
Maura furrowed her brow in confusion as she leaned over to see Jane's copy. "Bondage. Are you crossing out rope, belts, cuffs, or cable ties?" Maura asked in search of clarity.
"All of it. None of it… It's just a no so drop it" Jane said, shifting in her seat but willing her voice to remain neutral.
Maura didn't work or live in Boston when Jane worked on the case involving the serial killer Charles Hoyt. Jane was gratefull for the fact that she never asked about the scars even though she saw Maura looking at them once or twice.
The thought of ever being restrained again. Being powerless and left to the mercies of someone else, petrified Jane to no end.
Maura nodded her head in agreement. "Consider it gone. But Jane, if we're going through with this then communication needs to be paramount. If it's a matter of some sort of trauma in your past, I need to know." she said with piercing eyes.
Does she know? Those hazel eyes can be so cold at times. Petrifying other times. But at this moment, they're genuine, warm, and caring. Jane's eyes widen. She's never seen that look before.
Communication. That's gotta work both ways surely, Jane thinks. "Fine. What about a question for a question?"
"Pardon?" Maura asks.
"You answer my question and I tell you why I don't want to be tied up."
Maura narrowed her gaze. "What if I don't want to answer your question?"
"Then I ask a different one. You know I have a million of them" Jane states honestly.
Maura seems to take in the information. Considering it for a moment. "Fine. Ask your question"
Where to begin? Jane only knew what she could read in her file, tabloids, and news articles. Maura seemed to dodge every personal question thus far with a sigh or reciting an article completely unrelated.
All she got out of her is that she loves running, fashion and yoga. That examining stomach contents was her favorite part of an autopsy. She mentioned cooking from old authentic recipes. Fudge clusters have the power to make her day do a 180-degree turn. She doesn't have siblings.
Sur when you really think about it, Jane already knew more about Maura than the entire BPD combined. But she craves more. She needs more.
What was her childhood like? Are her parents alive? Why doesn't she kiss anyone anymore? What made her the way she is? Or did she come out of her mother's womb with a disapproving look and a determination to make even grown men cry?
A loud thump made Jane jump in her seat and out of her thoughts. "Gah! What the hell was that?" Jane asked, looking in the direction of the noise.
"That's just Bass," Maura said, calmly getting out of her chair and walking toward the slow-creeping boulder. "He's an African Spurred Tortoise," she says bending down to pat his shell.
"He's alive?" Jane asks earning a disapproving look. "Bass? What after an old boyfriend?"
"William M Bass who founded the famous body farm at the University of Tennesee," Maura said, rising to her feet.
"Right that Bass," Jane said with a small grin.
"Partial to British strawberries," she says over her shoulder, walking to the fridge.
"Great pet. Real interactive I'll bet" Jane said softly, watching Maura hand him a large strawberry.
"So I answered your question. Now it's your turn" Maura says walking back to the table.
"What? I didn't ask one yet" Jane said confused.
"You did. You asked "What was that?" and I told you. Bass." Maura says with a smirk.
"Very funny" Jane said, taking her seat once more. "Ok. What was your relationship like with your parents?"
Maura just gave a neutral look. "Fine. Why won't you kiss anymore? And don't say it's too personal"
"Next," Maura said dryly.
"Gah woman. Fine. Why are you so direct all the time? I know you said you don't care what people think but, sometimes you could be pretty… mean. But I don't think you always mean to be" Jane said carefully, hoping desperately Maura would finally answer.
Maura pursed her lips in thought. "I am incapable of telling a lie." Maura began. "Ever since I was a little girl. I remember telling my calculus teacher that I finished my homework when I hadn't. And I immediately went vasovagal." Jane stared blankly.
"Fainted" Maura clarified. "I also seem to experience severe urticaria whenever I do lie." Jane huffed. "Hives. I break out into hives, Jane"
"I suppose sometimes I feel omitting is the same as telling a lie and as you said, I simply don't care what people think. So I tell the cold hard truth, and people seem to get offended" she said with a mischievous smile. "Perhaps I like causing bits of chaos too," she added with a wink and Jane squirmed under her gaze.
Jane cleared her throat. "Wow. Don't think I've ever met anyone who was physically incapable of lying." she place her chin in her palm, looking at Maura. "You like this shirt with this jacket?" Jane asked to test the new information.
"Not really. You always wear such frumpy clothes, detective. I do not understand." Maur states, shaking her head. "With your gorgeous bone structure and features you should be showcasing it daily, honestly" she adds casually.
A whimper escaped Jane's throat, she tries to cover it with a cough. She was never good at taking compliments and the flushness in this instant isn't helping.
"I guess it's your turn," Jane says, rubbing her palms. "I was working a case a few years back. Husband bound and posed. Woman missing, and a teacup for a listening device. The MO was always the same so we soon released… we had a serial killer" Jane began.
She went on to tell Maura how Hoyt tormented her. Maura listened intently, asking an unrelated question here and there but still taking in the details. For the first time telling someone else about it, Jane didn't feel ashamed, judged, or vulnerable. Maura doesn't judge or ask dumb questions. Well, some dumb questions regarding pop culture and things regarding human interaction sometimes but that's beside the point.
"May I,?" Maura asked gesturing to Jane's hands. Jane hesitated. Then moved her hand across the table and into Maura's. She traced her thumb across the scar tissue. Goosebumps raised on Jane's arms, feeling Maura's gentle touch.
"Do you trust me?" Maura asked softly, still looking at Jane's hands in her own.
Even though she's only known the doctor a short while and it makes little sense. Jane could say without question that she trusts this woman with her life. "Yeah," Jane says, sounding astounded by her own words. "I really do" she smiles shyly.
Maura releases Jane's hands and sits back in her chair. A long moment of silence goes by. It's not awkward per se. But neither woman spoke.
Finally, Maura says. "I'm afraid it's getting late, we could review the rest of the contract tomorrow after work? That'll give you some time to think about what we've discussed thus far" she gets up and pushes her chair in.
Jane is baffled when she sees the time, it's nearly ten at night. How she managed to go through a sex contract for almost three hours, with Maura explaining terms and various aspects of the contract without missing a beat or becoming flushed herself, without combusting from pure arousal or bolting for the door in the process is beyond Jane.
She takes the binder and awkwardly holds her hand out for Maura to shake. "See you tomorrow, Maura". Neither one breaks the shake and the touch lingers. Maura looks down at their joined hands then back up at Jane.
"Goodnight, Jane. I run quite early in the morning, don't be late again". If Maura noticed at all that Jane called her by her first name, then she didn't show it. She finally retreats her hand and opens the door for Jane.
Not only did she get a full 'goodnight' but she also got a handshake this time. The winds of change was in the air and not just because summer was coming to an end. Jane placed the hefty leather binder on the passenger seat and muttered. "Vaginal fisting. Good, grief what has my life become?"
If there is anything else you guys would wanna see in the contract please tell me in the reviews =)
